Antonio, this is another great video. I'm Japanese and I love shirts that are well made. Lately when I get a shirt I usually go for a brand that has a right fit for me over quality since I'm only 5'5, slim with short limbs. I agree that brands that have great history are still here for a reason. I would also like to see new brands that produce great products to be around for a long time.
Awesome video once again. I like that you didn't just say, go buy a crazy expensive shirt, but rather showed us the tools to find a quality shirt that can be applied to a small budget. This is a big thanks coming from a college student like me.
Here is England some of our tailors have been around for centuries, such as Ede and Ravenscroft, est. 1689! On Savile Row many of the tailors there are from the 19th century. You know you can trust these companies.
Different yarns (different fibers - cotton, linen, etc.) have different prices, depending on the qualities of the yarn. Then the weave will determine the price of the cloth. Differently colored yarns can give a pattern (more expensive) or a pattern can be printed on a white cloth (cheaper). At 2:37, you look at the inside of a shirt's shoulder where the sleeve is set into the body. The double (parallel) stitch in this example does not really look sophisticated, but that can be the lack of resolution. It is as if we look at the scissor cut edge of the cloth exposed. A quality shirt would have a double stitch that hides the cut off edge of the cloth so the weave does not fall apart there. The example looks machine-stitched, not hand stitched. Another aspect of price can be the cloth has been treated so you do not have to iron the shirt, or it repels staining fluids.
Thank you for this video! All great points on how to tell if something is well made. I'm so glad my business / products hits all 5 points you described!
Great video and much-needed, personally being 6’7 I am confounded to the big and tall world it’s been my experience and a shirt brand I would recommend would be Visconti you can find this at Dillards in big and tall or normal sizing I think the fabric designs and patterns of the shirts are excellent quality they retail for about 120 per shirt but you can find them on sale usually.
Hey Antonio, I have bought a large number of shirts in the AU$300-$400. I have also bought much cheaper shirts. The result? Every one of my expensive shirts which are now 13-14 years old, still look wonderful, feel wonderful, still look modern and beautifully styled. Makes for a cheap shirt. Cheaper ones? Well what can I say? Lucky to get 12months to 2 years.
Great topic Antonio. I am in the process of upgrading my wardrobe and have decided to start with my dress shirts. I will definitely look for the details you mentioned here.
I would highly recommend Charles Tyrwhitt (don't know if it's available outside the UK). Very high quality and they are willing to spend a good amount of time at the store making sure you get exactly what you want and the right fit. You can also customise it with a monogram etc if you want. Additionally they have a fantastic return policy including a 6 month money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. They almost always have a 4 for £100 deal so I think it's great value also.
+LM1990 have to disagree. IMO I admit TM lewin used to make great shirts. Really good fabric, good construction, good price. However since I went back to London this past June the cloth quality has dramatically gone down hill. For the price they are still a good deal and offer a fantastic range of fits, collar widths and sleeve lengths, but there are much better deals if you shop around. I personally can't rate this Australian brand named SABA well enough. Great cloth, and although at full price they are too expensive (200AUD), they often do 2 shirts for 200 AUD promotion which makes them a great bargain. Modern slim fits, italian fabrics, quality buttons and construction. worth checking out next time you need a shirt.
I agree, Charles Tyrwhitt do fantastic dress shirts. I own around 16. The quality fabrics used make them long lasting. Check out their store in Bicester Village, sometimes they have the £60 shirts on for around £18 :)
I have checked out Charles Tyrwhitt. I have read a lot about the and am now ready to order. Oddly enough, I was listening to a national radio show and they advertised for CT. I got 6 shirt for 199.00!!! Looking forward to getting them!
Antonio, my compliments (again) to this very informative video to those who are new to the subject. Personally, the fabric of the shirt also says a lot to me. A shirt from, let's say Monti is relatively/a lot less luxurious than a shirt woven by Kiton for example. You can actually feel the difference just by gently rubbing it between your fingers. It's kinda obvious but that's why I think it's a very good way to notice differences between shirts. Also Antonio, I know you're a very busy man and this is just an idea, but I think this would be an excellent topic to make a set of videos from. How to notice High Quality knitwear, shoes, fur, scarves, gloves, face lotions etc. etc. Just an idea!! I'd love to see a video about cashmere knitwear!
High count stitches/inch is also used for floor coverings (Persian Rugs), and Paper (fiber count) and bedding: sheets, Towels, robes, window coverings, canvas tents, sleeping bags, fiber boards, roofs (nails or screws/asphalt tile)....
I'm never disappointed with your videos Antonio; great content!! It would be really useful to me because of the time of the year if you made a video about how and when to use a coat, especially a pea coat. Thanks again keep that up Antonio
Thanks for the informative video, Antonio! I just had a shirt tailored so this video couldn't come at a more perfect time. In my opinion, you should have started with brand first, because there are brands that have lasted for ages that are now starting to scrimp on quality. Hence it would be better to start with a good brand and then look further. My 2 cents.
wow.... phenomenal video. I will go do that after exams and look at high quality shirts. As a person who is on a budget, I want to be able to identify whether a sale is a good deal or not. I am a very happy subscriber. -Brad
The best quality shirt I've had that has washed really well and isn't super wrinkly its great for wash and wear is from a New York based brand called Onassis they generally rage from $100-$150 but you can catch them on sale for a good price.
Hi Antonio. I enjoy your channel very much. Have you addressed the issue of dressing well for men who are overweight? Some of us don't have that model frame we wish we had but still want to look good. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Hey bro I respect your videos but and others don’t reconcile that some of of us live in Las Vegas and can’t always work in in wool dress pants and shirts. Sometimes the the cheaper alternatives work better
Good video on selecting a well made dress shirt; what I think you missed was the fabric, some of the best designers hinted that the best shirt starts with the best fabric.....but weel thought out strategy
Excellent vid! That was a great point about factoring in the company's history, hadn't even thought of that. I also enjoyed how into the topic you are dialoguing on. Well done, sir. Helped a lot.
In movies you often see these nice sheen or satin like white dress shirts some actors wear. I’m curious to know what brands have similar look and style
First thing to do is hold the shirt up to the light and inspect the actual weaving of the material . If light shines thru it like a piece of cheese cloth and it's uneven put it down and walk away . Pinpoint oxford shirts are a good place to start when looking for quality shirts . You'd be surprised how many people don't even know the word or what it means .
I wasn't expecting tip #5, but you are spot on, good point. Of course you do realize that you gave all the patients with so called "brand blindness" disease an excellent excuse for not going to a doctor. :)
I always have to have my dress shirts tailor made (bespoke) otherwise they don't fit. I have wide shoulders, V- taper back, slim waist, reasonably thick arms so a normal shirt (just like a suit) I just can not wear and is a sure waste of money. Yes you pay a lot more than normal, but for me at least, it is well worth the investment (130-140 euros). And you can have any style, any fabric, any type of buttons, any colour, any type of stitching. Anything you can think of and best of all, it fits me exactly right.
Hey Antonia, love your content. I was hoping you might give more mention to the company Proper Cloth in the future. I know you recommend great companys and so I think they should get more mention because they really are a great company in my opinion.
i am looking to build my wardrobe up a little. i used to read two of your competitors blogs, an affordable and put this on. I thrift most of my wardrobe, but would like a few recommendations for something new. Proper cloth looks good, but I am hesitant to purchase such an expensive item online.
If the clothe of the shirt has lines or stripes they should match and continue the lines or stripes colourwise till the end, like at shoulders to sleeves.
Sir, I've been looking at Combatant Gentlemen lately, and they seem to be offering a widening selection of garments at a low price. Due to my economic situation, I have yet to try them out. The reason I bring this up is that I respect your opinion and was wondering if you have dealt with them in the past and, if you have, what sort impression the company left on you. Thank you for your videos, they're very engaging and informative.
Antonio, how do you like Charles Tyrwhitt shirts? You can pick these up for $40 or $50 each, often in Egyptian cotton and the attention to detail and the quality overall is, in my mind, unrivaled. For example, Brooks Brothers use plastic collar stays, Calvin Klein uses a plain metal stay, Charles Tyrwhitt use a brass stay that's branded, it's look better and it adds to the overall experience. I've found you can pay less than the price of a shirt from express (that lasts three washes) and get significantly better quality than Brooks Brothers or Calvin Klein that charger significantly more. Additionally, their customer service is the best I have experience in any any business any time in my life. I have no affiliation with the company but have been so consistently impressed I can't help but share how awesome they are. Have you come across them? Any opinion on other brands that offer superior quality for a reasonable price?
CT makes a decent shirt for the money. Or, I should say, CT has a decent shirt made for them, for the money. I just bought 5 for under $250. It can be a good value, IF you buy during one of their better perma-sales, with additional discount code (Use: RMNN12 for an additional 12% off and free shipping). Like many low to middle-end men's clothing retailers (Mens Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Brooks Brothers, etc.), CT uses a high MSRP, high discount business model. The high MSRP gives an aire of exclusivity, while not providing any actual value. The "discounts" from this business model make it seem like a good deal, while it is only fairly priced (again, only if you use additional discount codes). Though CT tries their hardest to infuse a sense of British-ness to their products, most of it is made in Peru, Turkey, China, or former Eastern Bloc countries. Only a few select products, like their handmade line of ties and some of the outerwear garments, are actually made in England or Italy. If in United States, expect to wait 2 weeks; your package will come across the pond via Royal Mail, with USPS delivering after Customs destroys your box. Not to fear, CT ships with a pretty sturdy box. All I am saying is, know what you are buying and run the numbers for yourself, to determine if it is a good value. For me, a man who likes to look sharp without breaking the bank, CT provides a decent value, even with the cheesy British marketing gimmicks and "specials". I'd steer clear of their shoes; stick to the shirts and ties. I have a suit on the way and will let you guys know how that turns out.
I dress in and use the most fashionable, expensive clothing and accessories possible (e.g. Tom Ford, Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli, Ralph Lauren, Kiton, Loro Piana, Canali, Salvatore Ferragamo and Valentino Suits, Oliver Peoples glasses and Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta leather goods, to name a few)
There's only a brand when it comes to exceptional quality menswear and it is Ermenegildo Zegna! And if you have the privilege to buy one of their Made to Measure shirts you will be astonished by how perfectly they will fit you and never wear a regular shirt anymore.
you probably paid as much for the name as you did for the shirts, those brands make every thing and specialize in nothing and all made in china or india.
I wouldn't say Zegna makes rubbish shirts. Even though the level of their quality is a step down from Isaia, the material they use is of premium quality, which they've woven themselves. It's easy to trash Zegna because it's a fashion label.
There's a store in my neighborhood that has a shirt I like a lot. The problem is that it's expensive, around $200 like you said. Have you had experience with the company? It's called By Robert James.
Hi Antonio, a great video in essence. My "problem" with it is that the quality shirts you talk about, for $200+ may not be the best out there. As a tailor, you know that most fabrics on cheap garments from the rack are, well cheap. At that price, why not go bespoke because it is about $250 a shirt with the best fabrics in the world. If people cannot go bespoke, I would not spend over $100 a shirt. I went from Banana Republic to Tom Ford to find out that most companies just screw us over with the brand... Better see my tailor for that. Pants, shirts, suits, jackets. A lot simpler. LOL
Do you know any taylor places in Austin, and there location, because I need Help!! Question what color button up shirt should I wear for first day if high school. Pink, White, baby blue, or what color's do you have in mind. Also I am going to be wearing a light brown watch, and belt w/ the shoe's, and cacky shorts.
I work for a higher end clothing store, so we have to look more on the causal business casual side of things. (we don't need suits but we still need dark denim jeans and possibly a dress shirt) This being said I don't have a lot of money but I am wondering what is the best most reliable way to dress myself without breaking the bank?
I'm a college student that has to dress up for class due to the course of studies I have chosen. I found that for the price shirts from express are the best fit for the money, as I don't have the resources to spend $300 on a shirt. I understand that the quality of these shirts is not the greatest but the fit you get for the price is pretty good in my opinion. I was wondering what your opinion is on express and if you have any suggestions on other companies that you know of with great fitting shirts for someone on a budget? I know you referenced Fifth and Lamar in one of your videos are there any other companies you would recommend?
I'm at a technical college and learning to be an electrician. I bought a coverall button down shirt that's good quality of course because of the environment I work in. My instructor teased me saying "where's your beer belly to fill in that shirt!". The shirt fits perfectly in arm length and shoulders, but I'm somewhat of a fit body type and most cover all shirts are extremely loose in the stomach (I have a 40 inch chest and 34 inch waist) . Is it worth tailoring that area?? And I hope a tailor doesn't look down on me that it's literally a blue collar work shirt and not a dress shirt.
Steven Xayavong Yes, I think it's worth tailoring the shirt and I don't think you should worry about the tailor looking down on you, they don't discriminate on shirts :)
I've seen lot of info on RMRS website about custom shirts and clothing in general, but I just moved and have trouble finding a good tailor in my area. Lot of them do alterations, but no custom clothing. Are there any tips for finding one? What to look for to get good first impression about the quality of the work without having something made to find that it's no good? Another thing that caught me last month was buying of the rack shirt. I was on my way to a business meeting and got my shirt stained, so I popped to a shop and bought new shirt. Problem I had then was poor fit. If I pick a collar size, slim fit shirts are too baggy for me. Is there anything that could be done on a short notice to make the shirt presentable? Other than pinning at the back and keeping the suit on?
Hi! I'm a fan of thomas pink shirt. I got 3 of them and it have been 5 years. the shit is still in almost perfect condition apart from the color stain by my mistake :(
Antonio, you are 100% correct about brand loyalty. Once you find it, it is awesome. Quick example, I bought 2 pairs of shoes from allen edmonds. A year later, these shoes just were way too loose. I had gone back to buy other shoes from the same salesman and told him. He said bring em in and we'll look at them. Well my life got extremely busy here in minneapolis, and just last month I went downtown to see what could be done. 1 hour later I was in a different size, and scared that I would be buying two more pairs of shoes. No way said Philip. He knew I had bought numerous pairs of other good fitting shoes from him. He evenly exchanged them. No questions asked. They were slightly used as well. I'd love to find a clothier like that as well!
Great video; really nice to understand what to look for in regards of quality. Question: I run my own business, and I mostly dress "internet millionaire"(but not there yet) casual with jeans, shoes, striped long sleeve shirts, and a sports jacket. My wife asked me to change my style to a more formal for work days due to some new business opportunities I'm getting into, but I don't know where to start. Do you have any video about switching styles from casual to formal? Will any of the striped shirts work out with formal pants or will I have to get a whole new wardrobe? Thanks again Antonio, it's good to have someone to go for this questions; have a good day!
I have one question: are you supposed to take off your shirt without undoing buttons on cuffs? And if you can do that is that mean that your shirt is too big?
No - technically the cuffs should fit tighter so you can't. However some men have small hands and this rule doesn't apply. In any case buttons can be EASILY adjusted.
Hey Antonio, my Kenneth Cole shirts I got for around $30 have all the features you talked about with exception to the stitching (I only counted about 15 per inch). Other than the fabric, possibly, how can I tell if I should be spending more on a shirt?
Hey Antonio, question when hanging up a button down dress shirt how high do you button them on the hanger? all the way to the top? or the second to the top button? or....? thanks a lot. great vids
shivam yadav Stainless steel is the most popular metal for collar stays. Heavy and stiff, these collar stays will do their intended job. You can be sure that your dress shirt collar will lay correctly and look crisp. If you purchase stainless steel collar stays, some manufacturers give an option to personalize the metal collar stays. I bought some joseph a bank traveler shirts, along with one of there higher end suits, and I now have a new favorite, for the price (which varies for 25 to 65) you can't buy a better dress shirt.
I went to a Goodwill recently and found a Brooks Brothers shirt for $3. It's a little big on me but not too much. There are no visible flaws that I can see. My question is is it worth getting alterations for the shirt? I'm only in college and work as a lifeguard. Would it be worth it?
hi, any tips on gifting my boyfriend cologne? i am aware that we would have to try a few samples because everyone has different body chemistry... what are some preferred scent to different situations i.e. interview, date night, at work? thank you!

For me Robert Talbott #1,David Donahue #2,Peter Millar #3,Brooks Brothers #3,Thomas Dean #4 and Taylordbird #5

I’ve got 100 or so brooks brothers shirts. Tremendous quality.

Hello Antonio! Great video as always!
My question is what kind of fabric are higher quality shirts usually made of?
Can we have some suggestion on buying T shirt and jeans.
Antonio, great job
I just wanted to ask to show the low quality material as well so we can differ one from the other.
Thanks
Arlen Aghajanian Will keep that in mind Arlen, thank you!

But your business card sucks...
There's only a brand when it comes to exceptional quality menswear and it is Ermenegildo Zegna! And if you have the privilege to buy one of their Made to Measure shirts you will be astonished by how perfectly they will fit you and never wear a regular shirt anymore.
micioteto You can "made to fit" pretty much anywhere all you need is your neck, arms, and chest measured and buy it slim fit.
Actually I have the same Q is Charles Tyrwhitt a good shirt company (yea you can get them online and in other C.T. stores
Cool! I've got a couple a shirt from Burberry and Zegna and Ralph Lauren that cost well over $400!
you probably paid as much for the name as you did for the shirts, those brands make every thing and specialize in nothing and all made in china or india.
I have a Zegna. Worst shirt I´ve ever bought.
For that price, buy Isaia or Finamore.
Nope, all my shirts are mad either in U.S.A. or Itallian or Swiss or Norwegian. I only buy quality stuff that are made in the U.S. and Europe.
Like I said. Zegna is rubbish, but FInamore or Isaia for that price.
It's called By Robert James.
davelogit No - but I would get on their mailing list and watch for sales.
LOL
How about a t-shirt ans a Polo? Please help Antonio.
Do you know about Robert Graham shirts? And if you do what do you think about them?
Would you say carhartt is a safe bet for a men's flannel/working shirt? Or has their quality decreased lately?
I'm a college student that has to dress up for class due to the course of studies I have chosen. I found that for the price shirts from express are the best fit for the money, as I don't have the resources to spend $300 on a shirt. I understand that the quality of these shirts is not the greatest but the fit you get for the price is pretty good in my opinion. I was wondering what your opinion is on express and if you have any suggestions on other companies that you know of with great fitting shirts for someone on a budget? I know you referenced Fifth and Lamar in one of your videos are there any other companies you would recommend?

I like bonobos. I could usually afford one sales and sometimes they have some great looking print button ups.
+linkinduck94 Nice!!!
Nice video. Thanks for details.
I got 3 of them and it have been 5 years. the shit is still in almost perfect condition apart from the color stain by my mistake :(
what can you tell us about wallets?
I'd love to find a clothier like that as well!
stephen jester awesome - great to hear that!
thank you Sir.
I really appreciate your efforts.
+omer s You're always welcome sir! Thanks for the appreciation.
What is the standard GSM of a good quality fabric?

This was very basic info.
Would be nice to know how to tell on the fabric, if it's high quality or not.
Is that possible?
Great information
another useful video, cheers man
Amazing information. Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing.
Where do I go to buy high quality materials?
What do you think of t.m.lewin's quality shirts?
I have one question: are you supposed to take off your shirt without undoing buttons on cuffs? And if you can do that is that mean that your shirt is too big?
No - technically the cuffs should fit tighter so you can't. However some men have small hands and this rule doesn't apply. In any case buttons can be EASILY adjusted.
thank you :)
Hey Antonio, my Kenneth Cole shirts I got for around $30 have all the features you talked about with exception to the stitching (I only counted about 15 per inch). Other than the fabric, possibly, how can I tell if I should be spending more on a shirt?
Wehter or not it's a classic design that's gonna look stylish in some years forwards, could be a factor :)
Nay Naing You might not have to - you might have found your brand and in that case stock up!
Hey Antonio, question
when hanging up a button down dress shirt how high do you button them on the hanger?
all the way to the top? or the second to the top button? or....?
thanks a lot. great vids
Tommy Siro I do the top button only
Hey Antonio how do you feel about Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein Dress Shirts?

What is the best material for Collar Stays?
shivam yadav Stainless steel is the most popular metal for collar stays. Heavy and stiff, these collar stays will do their intended job. You can be sure that your dress shirt collar will lay correctly and look crisp. If you purchase stainless steel collar stays, some manufacturers give an option to personalize the metal collar stays.

What us your favorite brand? Im gonna guess Brooks Brothers. If so, how do they compare with, say, Jos A Bank?
I bought some joseph a bank traveler shirts, along with one of there higher end suits, and I now have a new favorite, for the price (which varies for 25 to 65) you can't buy a better dress shirt.
I have had good luck w Jos A Bank also. Good value.
i'm happy with paul fredrick men's shirt's
I went to a Goodwill recently and found a Brooks Brothers shirt for $3. It's a little big on me but not too much. There are no visible flaws that I can see. My question is is it worth getting alterations for the shirt? I'm only in college and work as a lifeguard. Would it be worth it?

Brought one from their website for £150 and when it arrived I found it was 100% polyester. You know what happened next.
Prada shirt costs about 300$ but thats because of branding combined with great quality.
