With affordable housing in short supply and homelessness on the rise, New York City leaders on Tuesday questioned a steady, large increase in vacant public housing units.

I work in the NYC shelter system and have friends that work for NYCHA and informed me too. But NYCHA is telling their workers not to say anything!!!

I get told this every 3 months. Smh And the crazy thing is, i was told that all they need to do is a lead check.
NYCHA IS GETTING WORSE EVERYDAY!!!! SMDH I'M SO GRATEFUL I MOVED OUT OF NYCHA 13YRS AGO I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN BROWNSVILLE I'M SO GRATEFUL THAT THE LORD BLESS ME AND MY FAMILY WITH A HOME OUT OF NYC!!
@pix11news There are a few reasons why the NYCHA apartments are vacant 1. NYCHA can't no longer give an apartment without being fully repaired- NYCHA would give apartments that were in bad shape to residents to move into. 2. With the privatization and repair needing to be done NYCHA needs to keep apartments vacant for residents to temporarily move in while repairs are being done in their apartments. Regarding the ongoing homeless issue, instead of blaming NYCHA, if NYC/NYS (Mayor and all public officials) would actually allow Low income housing to be built instead of "affordable housing" (gentrification) that most New Yorkers could not afford- then perhaps the disgusting, ongoing and overwhelming issue with homelessness would be resolved. However, they rather spend ridiculous amounts of money in shelters/hotels than building Low income housing and providing real money to NYCHA!
And their affordable housing apartments have requirements of the tenant needing to make 4 to 6 times the rent! So they state that vouchers are accepted but you wouldn't qualify for a voucher with that amount of income. The acceptance is to avoid discrimination claims but it clearly cuts out low income families.
It makes sense because they’re different quality of ppl there, unfortunately! Meaning, unfortunately some ppl don’t take care of where they live! From urinating in the elevator’s & stairwells to, breaking elevators and front doors! Throwing food out the windows! Just no! Our ppl acting like animals!!! That’s why they don’t like, nor respect us! We don’t respect ourselves!😩 Speaking metaphorically!
Because ALOT of black/spanish people in the projects are filthy. Period. NYCHA is a public prison. People don’t know any better & don’t wanna know any better. Its a lose lose situation.
@@sashaclarke2749 This is unfortunately true. I'm A cable technician and I've been in all types of homes throughout NYC, and what I see a lot of times is what I call a "project mentality" where people don't take care of their home because they just don't respect or care about anything. Sadly it's mostly our people. I can go in the same building and go into a Hispanic household and it will be tidy and clean. Just because you may not live in the best neighborhood or environment, doesn't mean you have to live that way. It's all a mind state . You can make the best of a bad situation until you are able to do better if you really want to. Just because you live in the projects, doesn't mean you have to live that way. You should value yourself no matter what, and even if no one else does.
@@dawrekzorcist3372 I agree wholeheartedly. People in housing get laxed about cleaning and maintaining but I say even if you live in a shelter have a little pride about how you live. NYCHA needs to address how there funding is being used. Maintenance has always been an issue with them, they need to increase a portion of there budget for maintenance work and workers.
I tell you a little secret when not spending money on NYCHA. The President / CEO / and the, Teams running NYCHA get a big fat bonus when the year is a this is why NYCHA is not being fixed. But still what your rent money.

Let's not forget another fact as to why there are so many empty apts....during the pandemic many lost their jobs and couldn't pay their rent. There were the ones who saw this as an "opportunity" not to pay their rent on purpose and thought they could "get away with it". Then there are the ones like me who paid their rent on time throughout the pandemic and always have. When the ones who didn't pay on "purpose" found they could no longer "get over" even after the stimulus checks and PPP loans they were evicted. There are also other "turnovers" during the seasons end of summer people move out and the beginning of spring people also move out. People refusing to pay their rent during the pandemic, I believe is another reason for the surge of available apartments as well as all the people who died due to C-19. I am not making excuses for NYCHA. I live here and I am disabled, however I know that in order to stay I have to pay my rent. When I pay bills my rent is first and foremost. I am now living with no gas and was given a hot plate by NYCHA...on the 9th of this month it will be 1 month with no gas for the entire building, with 5 more months to go. I don't know who is at fault, nor do I care. I am alive and the building didn't explode, for that; I am thankful. I am one of many who keep a clean apartment, recycle garbage that goes out and minds their business. I don't live in the elevator, stairwell or lobby, I am not responsible for those areas. I am responsible for the apartment I occupy. Not everyone in NYCHA is a bad person who does bad things but it makes us look bad and "we" get lumped in with everyone else who are doing bad things. There is an empty apt on my floor now that has been empty since October, I just hope that the person who moves in appreciates their apartment and takes care of it. I agree that NYC should do more for our very own here who are homeless, can they do it? Yes...will they do it? Not when they see opportunities to bring more money in by building more CO-OPS and so called "affordable housing". Homelessness gets put on the back burner until someone needs to be elected or re-elected, they do the bare minimum and move on until they have to"revisit" that subject again. No one should be without a home anywhere in the world. All I can do is continue to pray for those who are without homes.
Good for you, you was foolish enough to pay your rent and now you don't have gas and heat, 😂 the law prevented anyone from getting eviction because of the pandemic, you really think that you are better than everyone else because you paid your rent but you don't know what you are talking about, because they could not evicted anyone because of the pandemic the government shut the economy down because they consider it a national crisis and global emergency 😂 you are so crazy 🤪
people not paying rent thru the pandemic had the least effect on apartment vacancies. Especially because of the moratorium. Nycha apartments have always had high vacancies due to the lack of care for the apartments and the slow repair process. NYCHA operations were already bad, the pandemic just made it worse.
@@chandraanjelica5608 Ingersoll and Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene been having empty apartments long before the pandemic. There was a write up about it in a local paper. They call it warehousing. That area is gentrified now. And it has the beautiful Fort Greene Park just steps away.
Nycha lost a lot of funding in 2008 during the housing crash. Federal money became harder to come by and that's why Housing and the MTA have been so strapped. It's the people that can afford to move and those that have died creating the vacancies and they don't want to fix the apartment only for a low wage worker, social security or public assistance recipient to move in. The less tenants the less relocation packages they have to pay out because trust they want an outside company to buy up the land. Alot of the projects are on prime real-estate with access to public transportation and high walkability rates.
If there are resources taken from New York to provide for the THOUSANDS of illegal immigrants, how is it okay not to repair those units for New Yorkers to come out of the shelters to occupy? That money should NOT be going to them but New Yorkers. The city found money for them out of our budget and exhausted it and NOT money for our own? NO none of this has nothing to do with the pandemic but what is going on right now!
They're vacant bc they don't have enough workers to ready the apartments for new tenants. The floors need to be done, the doors changed, cabinets fixed, New sinks, toilets, counter tops. Plaster, paint, windows, etc. All these things need to be done before a tenant can move in. They should start offering apartments "As Is" and fix them up gradually just to get people out of the shelter.
But yet I'm stuck paralyzed in a fourth floor walkup? Smh NYCHA needs to do better by us residents especially the disabled!!! What about them hiking rents since the beginning of the pandemic and still refusing to fix it for 3 years now? Smh
What's crazy is that mad people are still waiting to get their apartments for those who have section 8 vouchers and these apartments are empty when they can just give those apartments to those who have a Emergency voucher.
People getting paid THOUSANDS of $ a month to sit around a table talking about the problem of empty units??? Toal insanity WASTE OF MONEY. Just DO SOMETHING! Call in volunteers, retirees, students..make a difference. How embarrassing to be part of the group that just sits around talking
They need to put the single mothers & the immigrants into NYCHA idky your putting them in new developments…. Put them in housing like you was doing everyone else who lived in the shelters.. They give these nice new apartments to these chicks with multiple kids & they tear up the buildings 😮💨 Meanwhile I have to fight for a safe environment
I live in Queensbridge and let me tell you. NYCHA gets money for there apartments. I pay 2401.83 for my 3 bedroom. Ive been trying to downsize to a 1 bedroom since June of 2021 when my terminally ill aunt passed (she had the 3 bedroom when i moved back in 2020 to take care of her in her final months). They denied me 4 times saying that i was over occupied. The apartment has numerous issues that ive put tickets in for, stayed home from work and they never came. My door needs to be replaced (FDNY had broken in my apartment to get me out 3 times because the door was stuck), i have no working lights in the main bedroom and the bathroom (weve also had 11 electrical fires in QB in the past year). I have a major roach problem in the kitchen because we have 2 hoarders in the building and they repeatedly bomb their apartments giving everyone in the building the roach problem (weve all been complaining to the super). My fridge is falling apart ( i diyed to keep it running). They havent dodne anything so im holding my rent in escrow. They also have me living in another projects which ive never lived in and they refuse to fix it. Ive been told i didnt pay rent when i fid but come to discover they applied it to a whole different unit. This is why i keep my receipts. I told them to take me to court and being a Landlord tenant paralegal, i know what my rights are. Im currently still trying to financially recover from debt of the death of my aunt and once i do, i running not only from nycha but from nyc as well.
Someone needs to investigate what's going on in NYCHA. NYCHA staff, NOT all‼️but it seems like the majority. Are neglectful and simply do not care. I have had the same issue for over a year and have reached out to many people, and still nothing is resolved. Overcharged in rent. Paperwork never processed, etc. It's probably more empty apts. The waitlist will only continue to grow. Their system also suffers from many technical issues. NYCHA needs to do better.
I am not surprised I have been on the waiting list for over two years now. I have seen empty apartments and when I go in to require about they said it is a waiting list sometimes they even say they have nothing available. I am getting tired of this I would never know what it is like to have a place to have my children or even have my grandchildren over for the holidays or even some other special occasions. I am renting a room I need to be in a apartment to spend time with my family I cannot do that living in a room with not enough for my family to spend sometime with them. Something has to be done about this.
I’m so glad that someone has finally addressed this issue publicly because this has been going on for years. With NYCHA they always make promises to make repairs but nothing gets done, now they’re making excuses for being understaffed and out of money. They have the funds but where is it going??? Someone has to be held accountable because this is a disgrace and unacceptable PERIOD!!
Do y'all know the amount of hoops and obstacles people have to jump through for proper housing !? That alone makes most of the homeless stray away from assistance. But what if there was a company that does the process for them or guide them things would be better.
They need to take money and build brand new nycha buildings because most of these nycha apts are mildew, asbestos, lead. and rat and roach infested and are not suitable for anyone to live in .🤮

I am a former Case Manager working in the NY Shelter system for over a decade... Having said that, this is EXACTLY why I REFUSE to take another Shelter job... The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) expected for us to meet outrageous housing placement quotas. My question was simple, how the fuck you expected for these quotas to be FULLY met, when you had bullshit like this taking place?!?!... I mean, come on... You have all these brand-new apartment buildings that have been empty for 3,4,5 years and meanwhile, Shelters FULL of applicants waiting to be placed into housing. And now NYCHA with this bullshit... Please guys... Clearly, there is a hidden fuckin agenda... Ever since I left working for the Shelter system back in 2018, my mental and physical health improved.
This is so true NYCHA doesnt want to make repairs i have a few apartments in my NYCHA building that just sitting empty for months to over a year because NYCHA doesn't want to do repairs most apartments have mold issues to pipe and leak issues this is sad alot homeless in the Shelter need apartments
When I moved to nyc years ago and was apartment hunting, I looked at a 2 bedroom apartment share.. in the projects. I had no idea at the time what the projects were, but the girl wanted like $750 to occupy one of the bedrooms, which Im guessing was prob more than what she paid for rent. It was decently sized, a bit dingy, but not bad from what I remember, but I got weird vibes from her so declined

Took a year and 3 months for me to move into my NYCHA apartment prior to viewing apartment AND paying a security deposit w/ 1st month’s…. Move in was November 2022.
Obviously it’s poor maintenance and tenants who behave badly. I live in an 80+ year old building and the only major problem I’ve seen is a boiler replacement.
The apartment next to me was so badly taken care of they had to replace EVERYTHING when I moved out of my apartment someone was moved in less than one month after I was gone because I kept the apartment well maintained it only had to be painted. The apartment next door to me has been vacant since last may. I don’t know how they were cooking and breathing in that filth. NYCHA needs to do inspections regularly to prevent this
I grew up in the projects. Back then, there were exterminators and apts were painted, inspected, and repaired if/when needed. If you didn't keep the apt up, you were evicted.
If this is true someone needs to call me ASAP because I’ve been on the waiting list for six years on 3/27/23 I had to go to the CCC (Customer Care Contact Center ) on 1/13/23 to resubmit my application because they won’t let you do it on your phone or on tablet and in order for you to do on the computer you can only use a certain web browser.
You need a life.

Heard this years ago. AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED
One word it's was called Mafia
But yet I'm stuck paralyzed in a fourth floor walkup? Smh NYCHA needs to do better by us residents especially the disabled!!! What about them hiking rents since the beginning of the pandemic and still refusing to fix it for 3 years now? Smh

It's costing them money and their reputation.
Do y'all know the amount of hoops and obstacles people have to jump through for proper housing !? That alone makes most of the homeless stray away from assistance. But what if there was a company that does the process for them or guide them things would be better.
