      I don't think It so much about newer generations being more talented. I think it is more about having the bounds of what is possible being broken before you get there. Like can't double flip a bike till someone does one flip. It's like building blocks. Newer generations have a bigger foundation of what is possible and can put their unique block on top of the others that were later before. Progressing the sport my friend, progressing the sport.

    shredx81 What you fail to realize, the scoring system is relative to a moment in time. If they based the scoring system on future tricks that haven't even happened yet, then you would never see any decent scores. A run that scored 95 in 2006 would probably only earn an 80 by today's standards. Similarly, a run scoring 100 today would only score a 90 at an event 10 years from now. Shaun whites run was a flawless 100 by the standards set at that point in time.

    Everyone needs to stop pointing out the hand drag. They deduct points if you use your hand to support yourself or balance. His hand happened to barely brush the wall because he was planting his landing and because it's not flat like the landing of a kicker

    • @mitch6254
      @mitch6254 9 лет назад +13

      The big give away that you're right, Joseph Johnson , is that when you watch the slow-motion, his hand isn't on the snow nearly long enough for it to be a drag, and he clearly isn't pushing off of it. And in the long run, why does it really matter? He already had first place?

    • @dont4get2wipe
      @dont4get2wipe 9 лет назад +13

      Exactly, He boosted huge off that hit and just had to compress when he landed. As much as I enjoy watching guys like Danny Davis ride, it is a bummer how with Shaun White not really performing at this level anymore, no one seems to go nearly as big as he did.

      fo shizzle that's a good point and I shared that thought for a while, but I don't think they judged it with 100 set as the score for a flawless run, I think it's more for the best run ever, one with incredible tricks and no mistakes. Now the bar for 100 is higher, so if anyone get a 100 it is the new best run ever

    I want to preface this with the confirmation that I'm not trolling. I am legitimately confused and curious. What made this snowboard run so great? I am not really into the world of snowboarding at all, so to me it just looked like he did a lot of spins in the air and landed a little sketchy on the final one. I am used to the X Games having seemingly arbitrary scoring, as I've watched a lot of skateboard, BMX, and motocross stuff from them. But usually I am able to parse out what makes those runs good or bad. This one, I legitimately have no idea.
    Can someone help me understand? I want to understand! I want to take part in the celebration of this momentous achievement, but I am just kind of sitting on the sideline, extremely confused, why it was considered as such.

    • @nikkikelly2728
      @nikkikelly2728 6 лет назад +2

      The scoring is based on difficulty, execution and style. that run is so good because not only were the spins some of the hardest tricks to do at the time, but he was able to execute them almost perfectly and had a lot of style while doing it.

    • @1stmatesquanchy406
      @1stmatesquanchy406 6 лет назад +20

      It's a combination of things, the speed at which he was doing these tricks along with the height and the landings, he wasn't carving (using the edge of his board) after landing to reset his lines or balance himself. He just kept flowing through flawlessly. Even his last landing wasn't as sketchy as it looks in full speed, if you watch in slow mo you'll see that he didnt use his hands to catch himself he was merely compressing (bending his knees) to lower his center of gravity and prevent his ankles from taking the shock of the landing, believe it or not he was going incredibly fast down that pipe. His last two tricks were a double mctwist 1260, and a frontside double cork 1260. At the time this was filmed there we're only 2 other people that could successfully pull off a double mctwist 1260, and no one had ever successfully landed a double cork 1260 in competition before. So not only did he land 2 incredibly difficult tricks (one of which had never been done before) he did them back to back, add in the tricks he did before that, while they were not as difficult as the double cork he executed them perfectly. The judges also took into account that this was a "victory lap" each rider gets 3 runs, you keep you best score of the 3 and the other 2 are thrown out. Sean white happened to be the last one in the lineup to take his runs, so by the time it got to his 3rd and final run he had already won as none of the riders ahead of him bested his score. So in theory he could've just rode down the middle of the super pipe and not done any tricks as he already won, but instead he took a huge risk (if he messed up these tricks at that speed and height he could've seriously injured himself) and nailed this rather difficult line. So that would be why, overall execution and difficulty + the fact that he didnt actually have to do any of these tricks. Hope this helps you understand. Cheers 👍

    As far as I am concerned, Shaun White will forever be THE ABSOLUTE BEST. Imagine how many people start snowboarding every year because they saw him and were inspired. If you're hating on him, and you ride, then you may as well shun the sport, because he's making it what it is today and what it will be in the future. Other riders can only build off of him. And even then... he's gonna get the recognition for it :P

    I watched tony hawk spend 30mins or so tryna stick a 900, he did and everyone went nuts. This cat shows up an bangs out a 1080 on his first try live on tv! Hes the poster boy for progress in skateboarding, and every other sport he dominates. How do you elevate something already that high!?!

      Maybe, but they'll never be as clean or as powerful as Shaun White was at that moment. You can come up with a bigger and crazier trick, but if you don't land them correctly or fall then you're screwed. In the end what counts is the fact that you can land them. And that's why Shaun White is a legend.

    • @elasdickband027
      @elasdickband027 10 лет назад +2

      gps433fool Never? I somehow doubt it. Tricks like this are gonna be stock for kids half Shaun's age in a few years and with guys like Hirano around, the runs will be just as clean. Take Ipod's YOLO flip for example, it's perfectly clean and bigger than anything Sean can do.

    • @markopotamus
      @markopotamus 10 лет назад

      elasdickband027 I agree with you that people will come around and go just as big and bigger than shaun. He's one of the best at the moment, maybe not THE best but he will certainly live on forever. oh btw shaun can land a yolo flip but Iouri KILLED it. amazing to watch that guy

      elasdickband027 Well, maybe one day someone younger and crazier will come around and do the stunts better than Shaun but special people like Shaun come around once in a blue moon... I'm gonna retract my last statement and agree with you on that matter but you gotta admit, Shaun will always be a legend and an inspiration to the new generation. :)

    See I completely disagree with what I'm seeing a lot of people saying, I'm watching Pipe Finals right now and this run is still the Gold Standard, always scores mid to high 80's. Difference is Shaun got 6 hits on this and most only get 5 now, also this was 10 YEARS AGO. Go watch his 2018 Gold Medal Olympic run. Nobody and I mean NOBODY is doing what he did even 4 years ago. In that run he did back to back double cork 14's to start his run and finishes it with back to back double mctwist 12's. Nobody progresses the sport like he did, because the only competition besides that little bit with iPod that he had was himself. He still holds the record with 24ft above the pipe, nobody goes as high or spins as fast. Scott James mostly dominates now and still doesn't come close.

    When I was about 13, Shawn White came to the halfpipe we used to ride at in Tyrol. He had his sister with him and a few hours later I was kissing his sister behind the trampoline while he was destroying everyone in the halfpipe. Good day for him, great day for me.

      +DiMoNico1981Swe medals don't measure a snowboarder. This is classic spectator opinion. While I can agree with you, that Shaun White is the master at Halfpipe, he doesn't hold a flame to Travis Rice or Jeremy Jones in the back country, McMorris in slope, or Sleepy Stevens in the street. Shaun White is phenomenal at halfpipe and very talented at snowboarding and skateboarding in general, but certainly not the king.

    Amazing Snowboarder, no question, but no score in any sport can be deemed absolutely perfect.
    Sport evolves & becomes increasingly more technical & competitive. If it didn't, then world records wouldn't be smashed at every Olympics in the way they do.
    If you look at skateboard videos nowadays, the ability of kids nowadays dwarfs most of the 'technical' skateboarding from 15 years ago.
    Similarly, snowboarding will evolve. Give him a 99.9 by all means, but to award it 100 is to state that it was, subjectively, absolutely perfect & can never, ever be surpassed. It's retarded frankly & cliche of OTT extreme-sport culture.

    1. This was a victory lap so he threw down everything just for fun... He didnt even have to try...
    2. This is his 5th consecutive gold medal in superpipe so he needs a little credit for that...
    3. In this run he landed all tricks cleanly except for a little shakey on that last trick but if you look at the whole run, the tricks were huge, he had huge air, he looked smooth and effortless the entire time, and he threw down that impossible combo at the end that NO ON

      In sochi the pipe was bad. He did have the highest score in the pipe at the olympics of a 95, but that was in a qualifying round.

    • @theicemanleaveth
      @theicemanleaveth 9 лет назад

      On the night of the competition, the run was in pretty bad condition. None of the riders performed at their best - not even I-pod, in my opinion (although the yoloflip was pretty cool). The walls of the half-pipe were icy because of the lack of snowfall, and the present snow was slushy, since the temperatures were higher.

    • @thatguytate
      @thatguytate 9 лет назад +2

      xConman21x Yeah, in sochi they kept snow in a bunker because of this issue.
      I don't think it was a very good olympics.
