Why The Seiko SPB185 MM200 Is STILL One Of The Best Seiko Divers In 2023

  • Thanks to Exquisite Timepieces for sending this MM200 in for review!
    The Seiko SPB185 Steelmaster / Marine Master 200 (MM200) / Marine Master Reduced has been one of my most anticipated watches ever since it was released back in 2020. I knew I wanted one but it just never happened. In the meantime I bought the SPB313 Slim Willard and SPB265 Captain WIllard, and I own the ultimate SLA021 Marine Master 300. This needed to change. I wanted to experience what I think is one of Seiko’s best tool dive watches.
    So thankfully Exquisite Timepieces was able to send one in for review and I finally was able to wear what I hoped was going to be my new favorite watch. But now that its 2023, is it still worth it? In this video I’m going to get into the details about the MM200, the dimensions, how it wears on the wrist, the dial, handset, and case all that good stuff. Also while this isn't a MM300 comparison video I’ll be referencing it throughout the video because they are obviously directly related.
    Also my Marine Master 300 is for sale! I have the original box and papers alongside the original rubber strap and bracelet with the quick adjust dive extension clasp. The condition you see in the video is what it is currently like in real life. Other than a couple small dings, the case barely has any scratches. Only some hairline scratches on the bottom bevel of the case side which are invisible in most lights and most angles. The bracelet is sized for my 7.5 inch wrist but other than 2-3 days, it was never worn. The rubber strap remains in good condition although it shows a normal amount of wear on the edges.
    EMAIL ME AT thewatchidiot@gmail.com AND PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR ZIP CODE SO I CAN GET MYSELF A QUOTE. The price is $2,000 with FREE SHIPPING (in the US lower 48, anywhere else just contact me) which makes it cheaper than all of the comparable full set MM300s in the US on Chrono24 and Ebay. Thanks!

      The marine master SLA021 has been my grail since the day it was launched, and watching your videos made me want it even more. Unfortunately, I have been in crisis for the last two years, and won't be able to avail this opportunity. I hope I can get an SLA021 later in good condition.

    I have the spb187. For me the case is superb, it conforms to the wrist brilliantly. Great watch however I did have to regulate the movement as it was running at -20.

    I had both, sold the SPB185, never looked back. Yeah the 300 is bigger and heavier but it has so much more detail and better finish. Bracelets is worse on mm300 and I wear mine on a rubber strap. Feels great.

    I always liked this one. One of my top 3 that they've made in the mm200 variations. BUT, I am so wary of the 6R35 movement. For me, to invest in another Seiko with a 6R35... I just have to mentally prepare myself for the potential for disappointment in the movement accuracy performance. For around $1k, these days I'd rather invest that $$ towards something less risky.

    Hello and thank you for this video. I knew this model under the Japanese name Sbdc125. And I adore it. I appreciate, like you, the bezel reminiscent of a Sbbn007 Tuna. And many other things too. Definitely a future purchase. Have a nice summer. 😉🇨🇵

    This Seiko looks better than my Omega Seamaster w/SS bezel. I really like it! I might do the JDM version just for the kanji…but this mat black SS bezel with a chili dip of red on the second hand is a real solid design.

    3 o’clock lume plot. They made it look like a eyesore on several models when they awkwardly put it in the minute track. Would love to seen them extend the 12/6/9 markers into the minute track, which would completely correct this. And it would create more are for lume.

    The SPB185 and SPB187 are my favorite varients of the MM200. I owned a SPB185 for a while, but didnt wear it enough to warrent keeping it. Hope Seiko makes a thinner and smaller automatic diver someday, maybe a modern rendition of the SKX007 and SKX013?

      oh man if they ever make a 40mm SKX with 20mm lugs i will collapse lol! They dont make divers right at the 40mm mark much strangely enough, only the SPB143 and the SPB313 slim willard as far as I know

      You obviously haven't heard of the debacles concerning 6R movements and quality control... Seiko is WAY behind the curve. No need to bring the Swiss up in this discussion at all - they are playing in a different league really.

    Both watches look incredible in their own ways. They're the same yet as different as can be so they really could be part of the same collection. I have a feeling that youve got your eye on a certain gmt given your appreciation for Marine Masters?😂

    I’ve had the SPB185 for about 1.5 years. Agree completely about the style, finishing, wearability: all fantastic. Sadly, mine is also a prime example of Seiko QC, running 15-20 slow. Worse, recently the bezel mechanism has apparently worn out one of its springs, making it a sloppy 60-click affair (and of course, stopping on the half-minute). I’ve heard this bezel is a beast to remove, so probably no DIY fix for me. In my collection, this is at least Seiko’s third strike. A shame, as I still love many of their cases.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Год назад

      I agree with every word! It's a special watch no doubt especially bc of the steel bezel. Do you wear it on bracelet? How is it compared to other bracelets?

    • @A_Dude_And_His_Watch78
      @A_Dude_And_His_Watch78 Год назад

      @@thewatchidiot I wear it on the bracelet. I previously had the SBDC051 which had a similar bracelet. (I did a video comparing the SBDC051 and SPB185.) Both bracelets are good quality. Only negatives about the bracelet on the steelmaster is the length of the clasp which is extended by the wet suit extension. I also think the signed fold over clasp is a bit too wide. The small minute marker at the 3 next to the date has never been a big deal for me. Didn't even notice it much until I watched your review. Overall, I love the watch and it is the only thing keeping me from buying the SPB317. I would like to find a tropic rubber to try on my SPB185 to see if that would satiate the desire. Who am I kidding? I'll probably buy a slim turtle next year to add to the collection.
