Rowdy home-built Ford GT40 is “meditative” to owner Eric Dean | Why I Drive #1

- “Uncivilized,” he calls it. And yet, in the same breath, Eric Dean says driving his car is “peaceful” and “meditative.” Those terms, as we all know, are not mutually exclusive. There is calm to be found in the storm of a raucous machine. Eric spent three years hand-building a replica of his dream machine, Ford’s iconic GT40. And he didn’t build it to be a show car; he built it to drive. Mission accomplished.
If there’s one simple truth, it’s this: Days you drive that special car are better than days you don’t. Maybe it’s not the fastest, cleanest, or even most reliable car. But it’s yours. And every time you turn the key and hear that engine roar to life, something fantastic happens. Whether it’s hot laps around the local track or a slow Sunday cruise with the family to load up on ice cream, your car is the place you make memories. This is “Why I Drive.”

Time to give the editing guy a raise.
+1
Editing? All these rolling panning shots...that's the director
@@_baller anyone can pan. The editing was Hollywood level car chase (eg. Quantum of Solace).
I was thinking the same thing. Great editing. The way the lights come on the engine roars up and the next thing you know the drive by.
Oh my goodness! ALL of the right noises and beautifully shot!
Great job. These GT40s are the best looking cars, even better than the newer versions in my opnion
0:34-0:51 is the most satisfying sequence of shots and sounds I have ever experienced. The editors really outdid themselves, wonderful work.
Absolument 👍
I watched this video about a hundred times but that engine start-up sound gives me goosebumbs every time. Pure awesomeness!
Did the Hagerty team shoot this? It's gorgeous work.
We did not! We worked with some awesome freelancers out in California.
@@Hagerty Use them again! The editing and sound was fantastic.
Agreed this is brilliantly done. Sound is intoxicating! What is the studio name? @Hagerty
Creating, constructing and then utilizing what you have built and crafted with your own hands- is one of the core purposes of man. This particular piece of machinery and the persuit of pushing it to its limits is without a doubt one of the most visceral experiences one can have. Something many people cannot comprehend, especially the VR crowd. The work you have done is clearly expressed in the passion for the creation and the love of driving the GT40
Why I Drive; great episode number one!!
Any day that's a bad day, I walk into the house, grab a set of keys from the bowl in the corner of the kitchen counter, walk out to the barn & go for a drive - I always come home with a new attitude and a smile on my face. I don't have to tell my wife where I'm going, she knows if I'm in that bowl, it's been a bad day.
This is one of the most incredible car videos I’ve ever watched. I subscribed to the channel two minutes in.
I know the feeling well. I had taken an older Corvette that was in very poor condition and slowly over three years replaced & rebuilt it piece by piece and had great satisfaction with what I achieved with the car. Unfortunately after it was done I had someone plow into the back of it and the insurance company totaled out. I was able to take the money from that and purchase a similar one that was a low mileage original and it's great but its not as satisfying as the one I knew so well.
That's horrible, sorry to hear that
I built mine, I know exactly, exactly, exactly what you are saying. It's just an experience.
Absolutely fantastic.
The GT40 story, filming and editing are absolutely brilliant.
I know exactly what the fellow is taking about! Nothing like building and putting together your own car! The satisfaction at the end of the day is priceless...
Awesome attention to detail on the build. It's a credit to Eric.
Wow! I am impressed, inspires me to build one.
As has been said by others: " It is not your car unless you built it " (or restored or modified)
Fantastic story and video by Hagerty.. the best in the business..
Thats as close to the ground shaking with you from artillery. Both a joy to be alive. Started by taking all X1/7 parts into a Fiat128. Had to raise the Engine for the struts🎉
This man is the definition of badass. This car is the definition of badass.
And that sound.... oh god that sound is EPIC
You Sir, did my dream. I am so happy, glad and proud for you.
Salutations Eric 😊
The car and the footage of it, so so gorgeous, driving a car like this on those roads must be absolute heaven
Beautiful build. Great job shooting and editing. Hagerty does it right. Love Hagerty
Living the dream! Nice car!
One of the most perfect videos I’ve ever seen…
the lust factor for that car is off the end of the scale... shame the video wasnt longer...
My dream car for ever.
Saw it for the first time on Wide World of Sport in... 1967 al Lemans ? With the Gulf oil outfit. Major jaw dropping ! Then I read about the "Gurney" bubble. Incredible. Awesome. Then what Dan and A.J. achieved with the help from no other than The Man Himself, Shelby ! Hey, I'm Canadian, always loved Ferraris and Enzo's legendary cars but I was in deep admiration of the feat of those guys beating Ferrari on his own ground! That was incredible !
I'm 65 now and still in love and in respect with this unique, brash, highly uncivilized car. Love it !
I just got goosebumps watching this video! Yes!!! This is what is all about.
For the love of sweet Jesus make it this video/videos like it longer... This is phenomenal!!
Hey Kevin seriously what does the Lord Jesus have to do with how long this video is?
Yes! More of this type of video, absolutely. Same way I feel about cars
Holman-Moody? How cool is that?! This car is nasty...and I love it....awesome vid
This man is my hero
This upload just literally made me get up and take mine for a drive.
Great videography and narration. Keep it coming on this car.
A great video, an incredible car, and an awesome story. I love everything about this.
I did go into a bad time in life, i would wake up at 3am and go on to pch or laguna beach.
In my mini cooper s, i told my grandma going on long drives helps me think and therapy.
She gave me a nod went back to cooking.
☺️
Hello. Amazing sound. I could be listening that during all day. Simply amazing......I like it!
Great labor of love building this car and this video is one of the best on RUclips.
Way better than a shrink or a girlfriend on the side !
'Better than a girlfriend on the side', who do you think he's driving away from?
RESPECT THE CAR AND THE CAR WILL RESPECT YOU. THIS DRIVER UNDERSTANDS THIS.
Ok cool...
That noise just sweet music
Straight into my liked videos 😍
Fantastic editing / sound. That team clearly knew what they were doing. Reminded me of the intro to Quantum of Solace.
Good lord give the editor and cinematographers a raise they have out done themselves
Amazing, beautifully done!
I wish this was a movie so I could watch it for two hours straight.
What a great video, really well done!
WOW!
This is amazing.
Well filmed and edited.
I really felt like I was the one inside the car.
Absolument 👍😁
Hr dors have a good point: simply buying a car is not the same as rebuilding/repairing/modifying one yourself. Takes lots of time, patience, and energy, but returns it all in satisfaction.
JESUS HAVENT FELT THIS SINCE F5 HENNESSY VID RELEASE, i hope there will be more episodes
Awesome video and fantastic car... congrats on completing the project!
I watch this video a least one a week and still it stretches the front of my gym shorts
Beautiful
Great video only wish it went more in depth about the car not an hour long documentary but a 20-30 minute video would be nice
Here's a video,on one of the less famous GT - 40: RUclips video: Jim's Hand Built Ford GT40 - Born This Way Modifiers Ep. 1
There is nothing like the sound of a V-8.
Not to sound pretentious but I feel like new cars just cannot give this type of visceral driving experience. The luxury amenities of cars today feel gimmicky. Something about these old cars will never grow old, their robust construction and the athletic driving experience yields a kind of nostalgic driving experience that is unmatched by today’s cars.
Sweet machine.
Fantastic !!!
That is flipping Cool! So awesome!
I'm really digging this new series. I'd love to be on an episode of Why I drive.
Now that's cool!
Saw the Ford x Ferrari Trailer. Was the first thing that popped in my mind.
Where is this? I'm also taken back by the landscape. Looks so good with this iconic American beauty in it.
Love Ford❤
You guys are really stepping up the game, providing so much diversified and well produced content. However, I would like to ask only a little more of raw footage, just like the Petrolicious 250 GTO shootout. Most of the channels and even Petrolicious is editing so much that it doesn’t shows anymore a straight clip of 2-3 gears on full gas
Can't wait to see it!
Great editing!
LOUD NOISES!! 😍
TRD jojo and beautiful noises... 😁
Gorgeous ❤
That is so bad assed.
Awesome
wow. very impressed. A step above Petrolicious
So cool !!
Love every single noice it made
amazing
i want one so fucking bad now!
very cool it should have gone a little more in deph
Awesome!!!
Great video! Now I want an extendes driving / interview video with the owner =)
Awesome thanks
Which kit did you chose to go with? Any advise? Which Transaxel?
Daaam
Wow
I just found these videos and they're cool, but...It feels like right after they say "I'm so and so, and I drive a..." the video should just get starting! Make these longer with more in depth information on the driver and the car. I'm sure everyone else who watches these videos would agree.
Thanks.
Without a doubt one of the Prettiest & Sexiest race cars out there!❤✨
Yeah, I had to go and clean myself up after watching this. Now I want a cigarette, and I don;t even smoke.
The gt40 was the worlds first true super car!!!!
George Hembrow Ahahahaha 😂😂😂
The gt40 was a racecar and not meant to drive on regular streets. The Lamborghini Miura was the first true Supercar. It not only invented the term supercar, it also wasn't built for race purposes soley but instead as a high performance streetcar
👌👌👌
Wow. Just the garage alone.😰
Are the core components (chassis, body, etc.) from Race Car Replicas? Someone else?
I'd like to know the same thing lol
Saweeeeeeet!!! G :D London
It's got one of those Fast and Furious shifters. lol.
Dat editing.
Maybe the coolest thing ever?
A year and a half in ..... Hahaha looking at my 7 years build time.
Can I just get an hour or so long recording of that car driving on the twisties?
Where did you start? Cuz.... I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Thanks
Is this the same one from the petrolicious article
Yes! We thought people might enjoy seeing (and hearing!) this car on the open road!
We did very much!
TX! I will search for it. Wanted to see more on the car...
Can u send the link to this article. I cant locate it. Thx
Hi from Russia, Hagerty!) there will be video about timelaps engine rebuild?
are you dedicated on making this replica? how much it would take to you to make another one in terms of money and time?
