- 1996 Honda TRX300EX, Diagnosing ignition and starter issues, $700 Craigslist ATV., traced 12VDC from battery, to the fuse box, to the wire harness, thru the key switch, thru the hand bar switches, all seemed good, internal engine neutral switch, internal engine reverse switches, not functioning as expected, disconnected and reconnected them, functionality returned, starter solenoid tested bad also, Harvey Spooner, 3_14_2018,
Nothing like going after a cheap vintage Honda on craigslist and dragging it back to your happy place to admire and tinker. Not a bad way to spend retirement. I can share the excitement as you troubleshoot!

Hey man thanks for the vid but I didn’t see this and I got a hole new wiring harness and cdi box and but is still not doing anything
I have a 300ex and it has spark, turns over but doesn't start. it's getting gas and has a new carb, but it;s almost as if the kill switch was on. Also it will try and start regardless of the switch being set to kill or run. Really confused by it. Any ideas?
I'm having the same issue. It started for 3 seconds after new carb and now just backfires while cranking.

I bought a mint all original 2002 honda 300ex that's been sitting for years (10-15 years) for 750 bucks and put a carburetor, airfilter, battery,chain and sprocket kit and new tires and now its easily worth 1500 buck....I would have kept the original tires but they were dry rotted
Do you think that replacing the wiring on this bike it could fix the issue? I mean a new wiring harness would take the wiring out of the guessing right? That is if it's not too high to replace.
Runs Great so your done right? I mean you get them running then that's it usually because your span of attention is gone after that. LOL You really need a job as a mechanic so you can work on more than your stuff. That way you don't have to buy more to get running and you can just get paid to get theirs running. But most of the time that's not always the issue of others bikes. I really am poking at you right now & I hope you know that! LOL I really am happy to have you as my friend and enjoy watching you dissect & figure out these little challenges. Carry on......you can do it.

on the front of the four wheeler there is 2 eye washers that come from each side of the ignition solenoid when I touch them together the region cranks do you know what piece they would connect to

The red wire goes to Ur starter button, the green wire goes to ground.... ThaNKS FOR ASKING, watching, and commenting!!!
I finally got spark to mine but the start button wont work.Ive messed with the wires going into the case for the neutral/ reverse light but can not seem to get it to work.
I have the exact same bike exact same problem just so you know your dashboard is not on the handlebars do neutral and reverse light or into headlight housing that starter relay is solenoid not a relay

I am having the same exact issue with my 89 Honda 300.. Cept when it is runing the starter switch WILL activate and spin the starter while the engine is running, which makes no sense. I am certain that it is in fact in the neutral/reverse switch on the crank side. Any new news on your findings with this quad?

Hervey I have this quad, I was wondering if their is some way to get spark and ignition straight from the starter relay, Everything on this bike is bad except starter relay and starter
whats the interlock? inside the motor did you say?
Hey Bob, I used the term interlock to describe the neutral and reverse safety switches at are internal to the motor, they prevent one from hurting themselves if one attempts top start the quad in reverse or a forward gear.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!
Is it possible just to junk the whole electric and setup so it starts and drives like stuff in the 1960s did?
I had the same issue you have 2 green wires coming off the wiring harness at the clutch lever connected to a small switch which makes you pull in the clutch to engage the starter button. I removed the small switch on the clutch lever and wired the green wires together it allowed my starter button to work. the small switch at the clutch was bad.

Hey how's it going I was wondering if u can help me out here I was changeing my handlebars on my 1986 250 fourtrax and I rip off all the ignition wires and broke the ignition is there anyway I can wire it up to a toggle switch because I'm waiting on a oem one in the mail so for right now I don't have ignition what do I do

Hey Bob, I like the 300ex and 400ex machines because they are cool machines to own and ride.... Not may favorites though, I rather ride a Honda ATC200S or a TRX200SX.... Lighter machines, more forgiving, less crazy... Keep Ur eyes opened, if U really want to own one, there is one out there for U somewhere!!! Thanks for Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!!

That statement is kind of false if you were running on the battery and the battery was not being charged you would end up stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere
