As a mechanic of 40 years, enjoy your videos. Your skill set is good.I just recently fixed up an exact model like your a few days ago but in rougher shape.Yours appears mint even has rear hatch cover which I never see. These are incredible machines and up there with the Big Reds.I buy them up when I can get at a reasonable price.
I have the exact machine. I purchased from my deceased neighbor's son before the estate sale for $1300. It's a work horse. Glad I found your channel for more RUclips tips on maintaining it.
I just learned how to get rid of the engine knock from this video.
Thanks! 😊
Here in Ireland Farm quads like that go for at least 4k for a clapped out one and he thinks he paid too much for a mint one
We are kinda spoiled over here w/that stuff to be honest. God bless Ireland 🇮🇪 🙏 .
Yeah, thats why people get killed over the theft.
It definitely depends on what part of the US you’re in. The area of Florida that I live in, 1300 would be a steal. They’re usually about 1800 to 2000 for this condition.
This bike is not clapped out it’s in good shape
That’s because we’re in the US and they are way more abundant here. Almost everything in Europe is more expensive than in the USA especially vehicles.
I have the first gen Yamaha Grizzly 600 in mint. They were made from 98-2001....mine is a 99.All plastic is red mint...chrome wheels.....just sat for 5+ years....just needed a new battery ....the carb cleaned and new petcock kit.The engine is noisey....like top end....but it still runs ...idles....revs like new.But to pull start this thing you need lots of umph.I designed a am/fm cassette stereo system for the back rack.I even put on a small inverter to get 120 volts a/c to run small items like drills....coffee maker...etc.This is also my camping buddy. In the past many people have looked around and wonder....where is Metallica tunes playing.I realy enjoy your vids and your skills.Keep doing what your doing and thankyou.
ive seen a video on the yamaha grizzly 600 its not bad, not the fastest but still good that would be good to sell to a parent that's dying for a four wheeler to give to their kid I had a Yamaha dirt bike when I was younger and I had a blast
I just got the same atv that sat since 1995 , one family owned , I got it going, had a bad fuel pump and bad pulse generator, it’s built like a tank I love it .
Thanks for sharing
These are definitely the best looking utility quads ever I absolutely love them. Currently trying to buy one right now.
You can buy mine if you like
I'm going to put it Up for sale Soon
A problem is that I want to sell the bike first
If the starter gears were chewed up, it’s possible something internally caused it. My 87 ATC 250ES had damaged gears and I found out that indicated a bad one way bearing on the flywheel side. Ended up doing one way bearings on both flywheel and clutch sides to be safe. Nice machine - Honda’s are the best!
Great job using the break leaver to change the gears
It almost looks showroom now he can take it home and start ripping parts off of it
Just picked up a 1987 TRX350D. Runs like a top after a carb clean and new OEM fuel pump. That's a fine example there, these machines are getting very hard to come by.
Better be watching that timing chain that's the one thing that these things are known to go bad on!!
@@micflynn1 just went through the entire valve train. Pulled the valve cover and timing chain and tensioner for inspection. All looked new and was well within FSM spec. Great advice though.
Where’s the fuel pump on a 87 350d
I broke mine! I used blue locktite on the bolts that attach the gear to the camshaft and they still walked out and destroyed the chain (torqued to spec). I had to buy a whole new (used) head and cam and used red locktite and no problems yet. Not recommended but just what I felt necessary. I also put on a new manual chain tensioner that fits an old Honda CBR and fits perfectly.
@@cobidistheshit6324 remove the seat and on the kick start side of the upper frame rail it’s behind the plastic easy to locate
Looks 100% original. The oil cooler fan should only run as needed by the sensor. Im not sure how it was determined that it wasnt working properly. My guess is someone saw it wasnt working and thought something was wrong. The oil cooler keeps the oil from breaking down so it always lubricates. It doesnt stop overheating. Its an air cooled engine.
I have one of these and it is a work horse. Best starting /running quad ever. I bought it from someone that over tightened the oil drain plug and cracked the block! I fixed it and it has been great ever since.
Please keep sharing, I’m from Covington Georgia. Your videos are so great and thank you for sharing what you’re great at!!!!!
I have this exact machine. I got it from my brother, who bought it from the original owner some 20+ years ago. It has a stack of receipts, including the original purchase from the dealership in 1986. It also has an original, never used, Honda shop manual. It doesn't have so much as a fingerprint, crease, or rip, and the pages are not yellowed. The machine isn't quite as clean as the one in the video, but it always starts with ease, and drives great!
I’m prolly twice your age but am absolutely amazed by your knowledge on bikes. And I’ve been watching you for what seems like years and your videos keep teaching me new things. Thanks for everything you do. Keep the vids coming.
I had a 98, 300 fourtrax. Absolute TANK. Nothing could kill it. 300 had the same hidden kick start, shaft driven. Incredible machines
I am so glad I found this video! I just bought one of these for $550 from a guy who owned it for 23 years, however, it is not quite as pretty. Runs really good but smokes a bit. I was told the valve seals are known issues on these units. Going to use it at my property for work and probably fix it up over time. My second one of these, sold the first years ago.
We have an 87 on the farm and it's been used just about every day since 1987 Mind you it has been gone over quite a few times But a new part here and new part there and it has always gotten the job done. Only problem now is if anything major does break parts are almost impossible to find. We figured it has between 6000 to 8000 hours Run time Could be more could be less just a figure.
Joe, I'm really enjoying your videos, I've watched a ton of them already. Your mechanical skills are impressive. How did you get to the level that you're at? Did you have a mentor and/or did you go to school or is it just from lots of projects?
I had one just like it. It ran great then it stopped. Threw a ton of money into it and would never start. It was sucking my will to live. So happy I got rid of it. Now I have a 08 Rubicon 500. Works like a charm!
The vacuum cleaner noise warning was very professional.
I am not wearing headphones but i appreciate thoughtfulness.
I have an 86 trx350. It’s a love hate with these. The front solid shaft is tough as can be but the parts are hard to find. You HAVE to get original fuel pump and CDI for it. Aftermarket for those two items do not work. Fuel tank likes to rust like crazy too. Awesome machine that clean and complete for $1,300.
Thats the problem with ANY very old machine. 😕
Love the videos. I don't know much about small engines but I know a fair bit about soldering. Grab some Flux it will make soldering a lot cleaner and easier.
Love how you start it up then check for oil and nests in the air box.
Yea I would def do it in opposite order.
I love this channel, but I have to agree on this one. Oil is the first thing that I would check.
It's fine it's a honda
Ahhh no biggy then we will have a engine rebuild video 😊
Who cares
the 90's fourtaxx and foremans were something to behold. some of the best utility quads money could buy. wish i still had my 99 foreman 450 4x4. that thing ripped for a utility quad.
When you solder something first of all melt a little bit on the end of the iron then place the iron on the underside of the wires to be soldered, then apply the solder to the wires you'll find it so much easier. Solder follows/flows to the heat so by having it underneath it helps.
He was doing it just fine he's done it hundreds of times lol.
Had the same problem when I ordered a gear for the electric start, cover wouldn't fit tite had to buy a whole set of gears from a guy on eBay never did think of putting a thicker gasket on the cover. Enjoy your videos.
I don't know what state you live in but, I love the green golf course lawns. I would love to have green grass like that during 95 degree weather. beautiful place you got there
Your knowledge and skills are amazing! I really enjoy your videos
I use stabilizer in my gas all the time, never had a fuel problem, and 2 years ago I found Sea foam ,that works to clean the inside of the carb, Another thing if you use the bike regularly, just riding or working,You have to change the oil I would say once a year. Another good find of a real nice bike,Job well done.
He was using the hand brake like a clutch 😂😂
He's an idiot and everybody's saying they learning so much they must really be idiots too there😂
Fan switch - old motorcycle trick. Great find, that's a nice quad.
Keep up the good work I’ve been here sense you had 1000 subs love the vids more then ever thanks for making them
Thumbs up for the vacuum noise warning. :D
I was gunna tell you the last time I saw you soldering but you need to get you some soldering flux its awesome stuff you'll never solder without it once you've used it. Just dip the wires in it or brush it on and the solder just melts through all the wires perfectly. Try it its awesome!
Don't need it
You obviously don't know what you're talking about@@jerrywilcox9890
Thats a nice machine for sure I say you got a good deal even with the issues they are about $2,500 here with issues and beat up plastics
You get some of the best deals I swear!
Looks SUPER clean, mint baby! Real nice find.. hopefully you get it running.. (I know you will!)
The instructions I received with my new starter gear said to grind down part of the raised spines on the inside gear cover and it will fit with only one gasket. I wonder where the broke off tooth is?
I’m really enjoying your projects keep them coming
Also if you ever have to kick start it, there is a little lever for the compression release up toward the front on the same side as the kick start.
17:30 use a quarter with vise grips trick to get those plugs out!
Best most reliable ATVs ever built!! It's a Honda!! Keep it!! I am a huge Honda fan!! From there small engines to there motorcycles
Great bike , have had 2 of them , they are both retired to a remote hunting camp , they still run .
Joe you need to be using solder with a rosin core. 60/40 works great
You get some good deals. Here in SC prices on used bikes are high and if cheap they are usually stolen
That machine makes me want one but most of them are trashed very nice one you got there love your vids keep up the good work
True burn find you should really keep this one the colours on the kill switch are normally faded and the letters on the dash are normally faded and this bike also still has the original tires definitely keep this one!!
I had one here in new zealand found it in a hay shed was sitting for 20 yrs got it home filled it with oil and petrol it started after the 3rd kick and it went til i sold it after flogging the ring out of it never missed a beat
love watching your videos you teach me every time i think you are the god of motorcycles
Thank you for the warning about starting up the vacuum cleaner because I definitely had my earbuds in
Dang, great score! You should just fill the gas tank with clean fuel and it'll be fine, and fix the electric starter gears and you're good to go after a good oil and filter change.
Thanks for another cool video!👍😎
How would you know that? Did you check the tank out
Carburetor even comes with mouse catcher screen
Looks like it's even got the original tires on it. Really nice quad
Every one wants the differentials on those. It’s just amazing
What a good buy, good to see something fall your way.
Another comfortable ride, why I say so is I've had some shockers in the past, however I purchased a bike after seeing how you sat on one, probably not intentional your end but thanks all the same.
I've gotten hooked watching your videos. You're a great mechanic. I usually wonder why you don't just drain the fuel, oil and coolant before anything else? I have a 2012 Polaris Ranger 400 HO and have had battery charge issues. I picked up how to troubleshoot stator and rectifier so will test those. I would love to find an older Honda ATV like that one. I can't spend $6K on it. My wife would kill me lol.
like it how Joes says "ooommff"
FYI that gear right at 33:00, goes in small sprocket first. You have it backwards. Smaller side faces the engine, larger side faces out.
Timing chain just a slappin...lol
Very nice quad, that was awesome it fired right up. Some of the simple things people look over sometimes and it's always good when you can scoop up a good deal. I picked up a 85 Honda 200m for really cheap cause guy couldn't get it started. It was a sticky choke cable and dead battery. Took me half hour or so to have it running like a champ
You looking in the tank with a flashlight reminds me of a dentist
Now this is how u start a fathers day 😁😁
Your videos are entertaining. Keep up the good work man.
I bought one just like that for 350 bucks. Just as nice but I traded it for a 12-ton trailer. I have another one now but it's nowhere near as nice 👍👍👍😁
My grandpa got one brand new In 86 and there’s not a single crack or anything in the plastics I love the four wheeler
Another great addition to your collection.
Dude just pulled motor on that salvage 2003 warrior. Pulled top end off, remember the guy i got it from said it was acting wierd when starting up and runing the would just quit. The piston was missing oil rings completely and crank bearings wete done! At least the jug piston and head ate still good. I called and adked wtf happened, he said everyting in kit ernt on it fine no issues. Told him what i found. He said oh well its yours now. Have fun. I got some good parts off it im listing on my ebay store and a bunch of parts of the old 84 4trax 200.
I just picked a mint one up for 1600$!!! I’m super excited 😆
Amazing what fresh fuel can do, I’ve watched guys chase their tale troubleshooting when all it needed was fresh gas. That’s the first thing to check.
Take the Gear to a machine shop and have them mill it down to the right thickness
$1300 is totally worth it. Right now it's hard to find anything under 2500 that isn't broken
Super awesome man this is a show peace id be keeping this one if i were you.
This is the coolest quad yet!
Starter gear + belt sander. That bugger really rips!
Love the videos! Man, found my dream 4 wheeler! It’s in great shape also! Awesome have a blast with it. I wasn’t living in Alaska I’d try and buy it off ya.
Thank you for this video you have no idea how much you’ve helped me I love it
Please buy Some big flathead screwdrivers That fit. But keep UP that great work
Had one of these with a twist throttle growing up on my Nana's property
Centrifugal clutch one way bearing is shot you need to replace it or it will keep killing starter reduction gears. There interchangeable with the 86 big red and 250sx
I have 4 of these quads add a vacuum fuel pump and throw the electric one in the trash. The popping in the front end is normal add friction modifier to the front diff and it will stop after a couple of rides. The fan control unit is bad or the oil temp sensor it not working which is why the fan quit working. These are tanks you got a nice one!
350D those things are tough machines......the fourtrax 300 also has the hideaway Kickstart
cool stuff boys looks like I got a meeting with open homes on Friday about you boys 😃👌
nice. if it were me, i would have lathed the gears, but gasket is so much easier. keep up the good work!:)
Perfect except your solder work … you are painting the solder on … apply soldering iron for a few seconds below the wires and then feed solder from above the iron and up the wire … the heat will travel up the wire and the solder will seep into all the spaces.
funny you were tryn to shift it as if it had a clutch lol sign of old age my friend lol
Runs great 👍. Great job making the starter gears work. I probably would've reordered them. Anyway, thanks again for your time today. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Good work on that starter gasket 🤙💯
Hey bud I got the same four wheeler awesome machine take good care of her
That old Honda is in great shape.
Love watching videos of more of these quads
At least you finally bought a Honda and not a no good Polaris !
I love this channel! I have an 1987 Honda 350D that has all of the original plastic without any cracks. Cant believe how well these old machines run. Thanks for the great content!!! Keep up the Great Work!
For those slotted plugs get a wide blade screw diver or they also make a bladed attachment that fits on ratchet
Great video btw, but I think you should move your camera back a little if that is possible, because it is having a hard time focusing sometimes when the objects you want to show are too close.
Ahahaha. " Time to put about 1000 dollars worth of gas in" 😂 keep up the good content.
My brother-in-law had a similar model. It would occasionally break the gear teeth when being switched off, because the engine would bounce off compression as it stopped, and the one-way bearing engaged the starter. I didn't live close by, and there was no internet then, so I was unable to help. He eventually traded it for another brand without us ever understanding the root cause. Looking back, I wonder if there was a problem with an automatic compression release not working.
Definitely a keeper. Nice one there Buddy
The ticking is a common problem with this engine you might want to dig a little deeper into it check the rockers I bet they are pretty worn.
The first 4×4 atv. 3&4 wheel action took one of these up to a mountain lake in their first test. They float with a rider on board.
I thought suzuki was thr first 4x4
@@clemcon501 no honda made the first 4x4
@@clemcon501 Suzuki had the first 2x4 in 1982, but it was Honda that had the first 4x4 in 1986, it was the 350 Fourtrax. And they unveiled it by lowering it from a helicopter showing all four wheels moving under their own power.
I'm only 4 minutes in on the video but in case you didn't know, only the 1986 model came with those yellow headlights. Somebody must've added the front and rear racks bc that first year didn't have them.
