I have been out of the ATV game for about 2 decades so my guess would be $1,000-$1,500.00. Then again I may be way off. I bought my '87 Honda Fourtrax 250 back in 1988 at a dealership for $1,500.00. I miss my Fourtrax. Great video as always!
Keep this one joe! You said it yourself you cant go wrong with an old honda. Find an original tank for it and get rid of the rig up front. Maybe add some more lights and a nice wench. You'll be set to go
Had one of these new! Worked it to death twice on the farm over 20 years. Always pulling and hauling way more than it should. Broke the frame twice! Low range and shaft drive made it a beast!
Most Honda dealers aren't certified to work on anything older than 20 yrs. They won't admit it but it's true. Reason being, if they break something they can't replace they have to replace the bike. Nice find, around here that's worth about $1500 in good condition.
It's not that they aren't certified, it's that usually the machine isn't worth the cost of repairs and as you say if you can't get parts it becomes and issue. a lot of times the customer says to go ahead and fix it but when it comes time to pay the bill they disappear.
Its not on their flat rate system in the computer. They cant even estimate repair cost. They just cant make any money on them. Cant hardly get a good tech to work on the new stuff. I own and operate my own shop and my customers have some nightmare dealership stories.
Great video! This was a trip down memory lane for me. I had one of those when I was a teenager, rode the heck out of it. My dad's friend owns it now and it's still running to this day. They are absolute tanks.
That's definitely one of the nicer 80s Hondas. Decent size bore for the motor, an actually usable low gear for pulling/hauling, and it has reverse and an electric starter on top of it! Unless something newer comes along, I'd totally recommend holding onto this one. Since its in such good shape and runs so well, it definitely deserves a replacement tank. Even if a used one runs for $200-$400, it would totally be worth it to have a gas tank that's not obstructing the headlight.
Even if something newer comes along you keep it. These things are tanks. I have several atvs that are decades newer than this atv and all of them have had something expensive make them useless for months on end. My 84 trx200 and 86 trx250 have NEVER broken down. The most I've had to do to them in the 15 plus years of owning them is oil changes and batteries. Even honda doesn't make their atvs this bullet proof anymore.
Have a late 80s fourtrax 250. Very similar but mine has a kick start instead of pull. Paid $400 for it running with a plow and winch. Put a set of 6ply tires on it and painted the wheels and plow black. Looks nicer than most new machines. These Hondas simply do not quit.
My first and only ATV was a honda 86 trx 250 just like that one. My tool kit was attached to under seat but also had container beside trunk space. I bought the same back tires for mine. Also the headlight detached so you could use it as a spot light which I thought was pretty cool. Paid 1750$ for it back around 1999 and sold it to one of my best friends in high school for 850$ in 2002. I really enjoyed the one I had.
Easy fix replacing the boot! The cdi box is the usual culprit on these older machines… personally I would repair the tank & leave the external tank on it also, a little extra gas storage is always a good thing 👍🏻👍🏻
I had a trx200 that was probably the cockroach of four wheelers it didn't have a once of plastics on it no exhaust the previous owner rolled it down a cliff it had no breaks but it never let me down those engines are the most bullet proof Honda ever made mine started knocking after it burned all the oil but just dump some more in and ride for another two hours love the trx series and any sport utility Honda makes
That's the cleanest old Honda I've seen in awhile. Nice find! Have a DRZ400 that lost spark & couldn't find it. Sent it to my sled mechanic & he fixed it in 2 hours. Sparking through a new plug boot to the gas tank.. sometimes it's the simple stuff.
Good vid. Being an old mechanic, I actually worked on those at a dealership. That engine came from the atc185 with point ignition which was made a little larger to the 200cc with CDI. These were very good engines. I kind of chuckled when you said that there was zero ohms on the plug cap. I think the ohm meter was "misread", these caps had a 5K ohms reading which was extremely common to all recreation vehicles in the 80's. Governments required this due to radio interference. First place to start with no spark. If the dealership couldn't figure it out. Hmmm. Look at the point that screws into the end of the plug wire it may not be there eroded off.
I have a 1986 3 wheeler and every time I had a problem starting it it was the plug, An old timer told me they might spark outside but under compression they won't, So I changed the plug and it would start right up.Nice find and fix up.
Wow, this machine brings back memories. My uncle had one at his hunting camp…..was the first quad my brother and I had ever ridden! It’s so funny that this was an adult sized machine back when it was new.
I've been in the glass business for 50 years and I noticed that all your four wheelers have a lot of plastic and most of the time it scratched up you can polish that plastic out like brand new using plastic polish like you would use on your headlight lenses or standard automobile polish . Give it a try I'm sure you'll like it I've done it many times and also if you have any clear windshields or anything like that the Polish will polish it clear as glass
I bought a new Trx 200 in ‘84. First one my dealer had. Loved it. The only problem was it was prone to fouling the plug in cold weather. Always carried a spare. Only had to use one a couple times but learned to be carful. Was a young kid thought I was living large! Have fun with it
I have the exact same one. had it forever and I love it. all you need to do is adjust the timing chain tensioner and that ticking will go away super simple to do. don't even have to take anything apart
my very first atv was a 80s something trx250 so reliable couldnt kill it bought it for 200 bucks with bald tires no plastics no seat cover changed the oil fired right up after 2 kicks kept it for so long by the time i was ready to buy a new machine gave it to my uncle and he rode it for years still with no fenders lol cant get any better than a classic honda this is a nice one id ebay a new gas tank and keep the front mounted one put em on a valve for extra mileage lol
Have one of these. It still runs real good. Needs rear tires, neutral switch needs replaced/has been bypassed. Yet it is a beast. Father inlaw had got it from for $150 needed some tlc. Now runs real good.
This unit is exactly like my 87 trax 350. Only major issue was ele fuel pump needed replacement and new tires in 21. Old tires were original. Still a solid work horse. Thanks for sharing fellow badger👍👍👍👍👍😺🤗🐺
My grandparents used to have these Honda Fourtrax for getting around the property and forging the local creek to visit neighbors. These are super easy to learn and fun for leisurely ride. They’re also unusually good at handling steep angles on single-track.
You’re good at the electrics on the no spark cases . Comes with practice and familiarity. Electrical systems make our break and ATV and are known to be the weakest Link in the system that’s where I always look first as all of those components one fails in the middle and no one wants to find it .you found it Favorite fix dead orv channel by far !!!
My dad had an '84 200, this is the spitting image of his (although his fuel tank still held gas......lol). Man, I miss that ride. I have an '87 Foutrax 250 that I still ride. Love these classic Hondas!!! Handy piece of info to know regarding the boot being the cause of no spark!! I wouldn't have guessed that. Well done!!
One thing I liked about this 4 wheeler is that it had a low enough low gear to pull and a high enough high gear. most Hondas after this high gear wasn't high enough. I never felt i had to reach for another gear at full speed on the highway.
This is an awesome machine. 1984 was the first year that Honda started their 4-wheeler line and this was the only model at the time , everything else was 3-wheelers. My Grandfather bought me one brand new just 1 months after their release, in fact it was the 1st one sold at the local Honda shop in Jonesboro, Ar.
Watch valve adjustments the exhaust is very close for compression release. This one had a bad coil, did run, but was worn out, top end and tranny good.
I had one almost exactly like that, but it was a 250. It was a 1985 TRX-250. My Dad bought it new in '85 and he gave it to me in '03. We used it for utility use all those years. When I sold it two years ago, it was still in nearly new condition, better than the one you have there. I advertised it on facebook and it sold in three days, for $1500. The guy was not used to old four wheelers, so I had to show him how to shift gears and find reverse. The only parts ever replaced were tires, a new air filter, and a new front brake master cylinder kit. Otherwise, it was always completely reliable. I would have kept it, but I had no more use for it and it was taking up space in my garage.
eBay and Amazon both have new and pre-owned gas tank assy. Range from 170-245.00. Might be worth the investment . Had an 86 and loved it. Left with my friend in Arizona.
I've got a 86 250 fourtrax, it's in not great condition but I haven't gotten rid of it yet because of how reliable it's been, I mean it's been wrecked more times than I can count, 1st gear is ran right out. Even after I crashed it at 45mph while riding on the road into a ditch it still ran like brand new, you just can't beat Honda reliability.
Is worth allot to the person who is looking for one of these specific... Some clean up and a new gas tank it could be a good work machine... or it woulda make a great machine for a ful restoration for someone's collection.
200 Hondas are know for valve stem seals going bad if they sit for long periods of time you may have some dry seals causing oil to leak down in the combustion chamber
You can give POR15 Fuel Tank Sealer a shot on the old tank. You can get it from Eastwood. Might be able to save the tank for $20. I am sure it will not last forever, buy neither did the tank itself...lol.
Ive seen boot failure or wire regression inside the line so many times on motorcycles, its now one of the very first things i check as corrosion inside the boot (on the spring or ceramic pill) or a dry rotted boot, or the wire no longer making it near where it needs to can cause a whole host of issues, and can be the simplest to fix -- trim back the wire -- clean out the boot and fire er up
Great job good find on the boot. I am looking at buying another used quad what brand do you recommend? I will be for plowing snow and normal yard work,
I got a really good deal from a dealership on a 1998 300 EX in 2006. Someone had just traded it in, plastic was more broken than together. The dealership didn't want to mess with it. I just happened to see it in the warehouse when I was test riding a 400 EX. I asked about it and they said they gave the guy $400.00 trade in for it and If I bought the 400 EX they would sell it to me for $200.00. I took the deal. I spent I believe $800 or so on all new sport racing plastic, new racing tires and a used rear shock. It looked and ran great and i sold it for $2000 5-6 weeks after I bought it.
Your getting really good at this bro. Been watching you since the beginning. I do the same thing fix bikes and flip them. These videos are addicting. We both got clapped old yz80s the same day witch is funny. Doing a complete restore on my 1986 yz80 now
Love the videos, I've owned several quads 3 wheelers and I absolutely hate the thumb throttles on these things. I actually used to put twist throttles on mine. Not sure how you feel about Twist throttles But have you ever tried to make one for these machines.
please, for those of us who get motion sick, when wearing a head cam, don't forget that you need to use your head as a stable tripod ;-)... look straight ahead and don't keep lookin down and around. But that's an awesome deal you got... that's a big quad! nice work :-)
Funky spark/no spark issues with this era Honda is usually the little electronic ignition module - it gets erratic & will work then not work, etc etc. Often they will start cold, then conk when they warm up - as broken connections inside the ECM open up. They're cheap & worth replacing as a matter of course. Great little machines.
I'm sorry but I had to chuckle when I seen your post, I have a 1984 TRX 200 I use mostly in the winter every day to haul wood to my boiler. The CD box did similar, above 50°f it would work just fine, 30°f to 50°f was a no go unless you heated it up, 30°f down to minus 25°f it would work fine again. I do like the idea of that bigger battery in the back, those motorcycle batteries don't care much to work below minus 10°f. It has enough to roll it over 2-3 revolutions with the choke on and then you need to use the rewind to fire it up, the chock cable froze up years ago. Paid $1000 for it in 2005 from a dealer and has served me well for being a 2 wheel drive
when i was like 12 I had a 84' trx 200 just like this and the cool thing is, once u click that little lever on the left to go into reverse u can shift up thru the gears which is a really dangerous flaw. and then i got the 86' 250 fourtrax like 4 years later, some of the best machines i ever had.
Man how do you find these bikes for so cheap, I’ve been a bike mechanic for 40 years I’d love to have a bunch to restore or repair. Love your channel bro, you’ve become quite the wrench yourself over the past few years.
It all has to do with where you are. Where I am, there is no used 1980's ATC's, ATV's for hundreds and hundreds of miles. My Dad was the first to have a Honda ATC in our area back in 1983 till 1990.
Joe, clean out thst tank with some muriatic acid. Just pour some in and slosh it around and pour it out. Rinse tank.out and pour some redkote in there. On ebay. Pour out all extra back in can. U can reuse it. Let it dry for a few days and you will be able to use that tank
Damn, I've been turning wrenches for over 30 years and never saw a bad spark plug boot. Crazy. But nice job getting it running.....shame the gas tank was so trashed.
I've personally seen quite a few. Hell, I just saw one on RUclips an hour or so ago. The guts came out of it and were stuck on the sparkplug. I wouldn't say it's super common, but not extremely rare.
thats why when im troubleshooting no spark i always start from the plug wire and work my way backwards till i find some voltage. a test light is a valuable tool.
I have one in the shed that started about 5 years ago. Needs tires, some other rubber bits, and has some spot rust on the rack welds. Been looking to get rid of it for a long time. Hasn't been actually ridden in probably 2 decades. My parents bought a 200 and a 250, the latter did not survive a collision with a tree, tore the left wheel assembly off.
Id keep it. Find a replacement fuel tank preferably plastic and keep the fuel source up front for more fuel on long travels. New wheels and tires and you have a machine that will last forever and plus they are very desirable as collectors items. So itll pay off in the long run.
I think it would have been much better if you took the time to remove wheels and tyres and spray properly or even replace the rims, definitely should have replaced the fuel tank👍👍 great quad👍👍
Look in side the tank if it has not been done I do believe you can buy a product that you pour into the tank and roll it all around and seal it from the inside might be an option to try
Dude I'll be stoked if you get some property! That will take the videos to another level! You for one could keep almost all of them then, just in a lean-2 type garage lol For real like you said though you could use it to haul some stuff. Be cool to see you chop a tree down while using your ATV and trailer to get to the fallen OAK lol Then chop it up and haul the loads away over some rough terrain that only the old Honda could just go right over to the pile your storing up for winter for your wood burner heat. You could make some quad videos with some country life and quad use in them then like trails riding, hauling, working, grading driveways and other things, hunting and so many more on channel activities with your everyday new four wheeler lol Just a late night thought from me, love your channel its dang near all I watch anymore lol
On my car the rims were rusty so I sanded them down,... to like bare metal put a thick coat of Rustolium primer on then painted them black put a new tire on,....now its black with rust coming through? Sanding it don't stop rust. All I gained was a busted ass,... the outcome was the same as before I did it,.....just sitting in my garage. This was a good buy.
My fav quads. I have several. The 350 4x4 being my fav. Super simple to fix runs forever. Only thing I dont like about the trx fourtrax 84-87 line is the cable chokes. Everyone of mine have busted the plastic housing for the choke at the handle bars. Well can say the only thing I dont like cause I hate that I can not find plastics for my 85 250 anymore.
When you want to paint something fast like those wheels, smear a little grease on the bits you don't want painted and wipe it off after the paint dries.
How much do you think this Honda ATV is worth in running condition?
2200
I have been out of the ATV game for about 2 decades so my guess would be $1,000-$1,500.00. Then again I may be way off. I bought my '87 Honda Fourtrax 250 back in 1988 at a dealership for $1,500.00. I miss my Fourtrax. Great video as always!
@@joemartin6776 with today's market I would say 1800-2200.
$1,500usd. If the gas tank didn't leak and it had a OEM battery/wiring cleaned up, I would say around$2,000usd. It's in great condition for its age.
I'd say 2500$
Keep this one joe! You said it yourself you cant go wrong with an old honda. Find an original tank for it and get rid of the rig up front. Maybe add some more lights and a nice wench. You'll be set to go

I spent I believe $800 or so on all new sport racing plastic, new racing tires and a used rear shock. It looked and ran great and i sold it for $2000 5-6 weeks after I bought it.
Good score, Joe! Hondas always run. This is no exception.
Take it out and play with it now!
That's a good candidate for a tractor triangle and some turn signals good job 👏
But that's an awesome deal you got... that's a big quad! nice work :-)
Por 15 fuel tank sealer. Gos on the inside, seals pretty good.
Once I seen it how clean it was for being “abondoned” and it being a Honda I knew you’d get it running
I'm sorry but I had to chuckle when I seen your post,
I have a 1984 TRX 200 I use mostly in the winter every day to haul wood to my boiler.
Great machine with the hi/low that thing will pull stuff 2-3 times it’s weight! Bring her back to life bud 🤙
I have the trx250, thing pulls a pop up camper around the yard and campground and it easily weighs 5x the atvs weight.
I have one of these in stock condition. use it all the time, love it!
when i was like 12 I had a 84' trx 200 just like this and the cool thing is, once u click that little lever on the left to go into reverse u can shift up thru the gears which is a really dangerous flaw. and then i got the 86' 250 fourtrax like 4 years later, some of the best machines i ever had.
Spark plug boot.....super job! Great video.
A 5 dollar part,lol
Those wooly booger tires bring back the memories.
Stumbled on to this channel a couple days ago. I’m subscribed and Iv been binge watching ever since lol
Brake clean WD40 and scotch bright!
That's a nice looking quad for its age. I'd order a new tank and get rid of the one on the front. Would definitely increase the resale price.
Sweet one for the collection would definitely like to see you get another tank for it and bring it back to original.
Kleem the inside of that gas tank works great. It is an internal plastic coating
A tip. On any four wheeler that cold the smoke could be from carbon build up around the rings.
It would have took me forever if at all to check the boot putting that in the ole' memory bank. Great job man.
thats why when im troubleshooting no spark i always start from the plug wire and work my way backwards till i find some voltage. a test light is a valuable tool.
I always watch your video’s.
Simple and straightforward .
Thanks
I'd just run A T splitter for dual tank usage for backup fuel source for making out of long-term trips.,or hard to get in.& out of area's to.
That was nice and easy.keep em rolling great videos.stay well
I put about a million miles on one of those when I was a kid. Nice work, man!
I had one, great mpg.2wd good runner.
Trx 200.
Keep up the great content Joe. Keep pumping vids out like you have and you will be outta of room for storage in no time 🤟🏻
Good diag! Is there a bad gasket on the leaky carb?
Look in side the tank if it has not been done I do believe you can buy a product that you pour into the tank and roll it all around and seal it from the inside might be an option to try
20:15 Sounds like whatever was rattling fell off onto the floor lol.
LOL 😂
I currently have an 85 TRX 250 , I wish my plastics were half as good as those!
@2vintage what did you use to shine and put on the plastic ?
Greetings from Croatia, I watched every video of yours from the beginning of the channel, well done💪💪💪
Well done great fault finding and a big cheers from Ireland.
Ye mate strong engines on them air cooled ones Honda best ever move tbh but nowadays the newer stuff is junk not built to last
honda dealer mechanic cant be very good im about to check my lawn mower that needs coil might be boot LOVE YOUR WORK
New favourite channel 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 great videos mate 😎😎
$1,500 tops in that condition where I live in Canada. Sold 2 350’s in excellent condition for between $2,500-$2,800
Honda quality; good job following good troubleshooting steps!
Dude the trx 200 is a great vintage it's awesome to have the og designs, she is a diamond
Nice! If you find a good used fuel tank you could have a reserve one.
When you want to paint something fast like those wheels, smear a little grease on the bits you don't want painted and wipe it off after the paint dries.
