Blight: What comic is this movie based on?
James: The one where Superman becomes an oppressive dictator.
Blight: Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?
I love that that is becoming a pretty mainstream meme
I still love how in the movie Superman is still the same good person as we know him, but his beliefs on how to make a better world are the wrong. Like how he was crying after he killed Stalin, he just thought it was what was necessary to save the world. He doesn’t want to take life which is why he created the mind control things.
He was a good personality in the comic he saw people starving and said if I was incharge things would be different and there's no reason I'm not
Joseph Joestar you see, Snyder... THIS is how you create a Dark Superman without betraying the foundations of the character : by giving him good intentions, but he is applying them badly!
The cool thing about Superman Red Son is that he is a good person, but his world view is different from how he sees it usually.
Even if he had a different set of beliefs, the outcome would have been the same. For the only way to make the world a better place, is to remove the people who make it worse. Every ideology inevitably leads one to this conclusion, which is why extremists are the most dangerous people to ever live.
Adonis Farhat except that wasn’t the problem with Snyder’s Superman. His conflict wasn’t him doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, it was him doing the right thing and the world we live in being as it is utterly rejecting him for whatever reason mostly because people are scared of him
In Soviet Russia, the movie and comic changes YOU!
The only change that i didn't like was the city plot, Lex Luthor leaving a note was much better than the city itself
I didn’t see the movie but c’mon! The simplicity of the note was what was brilliant about it.
@@afonsolucas2219 that is what i am saying, thats the only change that i didn't like it
Luca Dias Yeah I’m agreeing man. Well.... but is it still worth watching thought?
@@afonsolucas2219 I would say "Yes", but temper your expectations. The main difference between the comic and the movie is that the comic is much smarter and Luthor is a much better character. The movie is still okay, but instead of clever manipulations, it focuses on big dumb fight scenes. So make of that what you will.
Yami Bakura Alright, I’ll probably check it out some day. Thanks for sharing!
Just going to leave my response here.
For full disclosure, I’m the guy that wrote that incredibly long twitter thread about every single change in this movie. So you might already know what I am going to say.
I, for one, am completely baffled by this take.
First. Going to out my biases out there. This is one of the first Superman stories that I have ever read. Before that I had experience with my different interpretations through his several movies or cartoons. But this comic is what basically cemented who Superman is to me which I’ll touch on later. And also. I went in very excited to see what I still consider one of the greatest comics of all time. I had confidence in the writers to translate this to its new medium.
Now getting into the meat of it, I do not mind changes. They are necessary. I’m glad you pointed out some of the changes here. As long as the changes don’t change the overall story and/or themes of the original. Because at that point, why are you even adapting anything.
You touch upon the changes throughout but I never feel like you took the time to really analyze what happened as a result of those changes.
Removing Pyotr (Stalin’s son) is probably the most egregious in the first third of the movie because he really could have been replaced by anyone. The character himself wasn’t important but the themes he brings actually do matter. He represents Soviet dissent towards Superman. His one line about Superman representing the antithesis of what communism is, that all men are equal in all respects, is profound and nowhere in the movie is that discussed by anyone. It really could have just been said by any old civilian but it’s completely omitted. Even besides the fact that it’s his betrayal that leads to the lobotomy’s (whereas in the comic Superman just starts almost immediately... for some reason).
As for Wonder Woman being gay. I don’t care about that in and of itself. I really couldn’t care less. She just recently came out as bisexual in the comics and I was one of the people that cheered. But the reasoning being the equivalent of “I want to an all girls school” is actually very insulting and every friend of mine who I have talked to who is in the LGBT+ community has shared those sentiments. That aside the rest of the movie paints Diana as manhating with no real substance.
In the comics, she turns against Superman because he fails to reach out to her when she needs him, after she risked her life for him. In the film, they change it so that he does actually check up on her, she leaves him because he is a man. Which is fine if they do something with that but they don’t. She never has to confront the fact that she’s wrong. On top of the fact that she only talks to 2 men in the entire movie and bases her opinion only on those 2 men, this reeks of what some men pretend feminism is. Manhating. When Wonder Woman should represent equality and understanding. She is the same WW as from the mainstream comics because Themyscira was isolated from the Cold War and thus it makes no sense for her to be this different. On top of the fact that the story paints her as being right for some reason?
Finally (and I am really skipping so much like Superman killing), the ending cements this movie as a failure to understand the very core themes of the comic. That neither pure communism or pure capitalism is good. But that, as in life sometimes, the answers aren’t found to the extremes but in the middle. Lex Luthor doesn’t ever have to confront that. The story ends with Russia collapsing and being incorporated into capitalism and Lex being there to hold its hand. It takes what was a very progressive story (the comic came out in the year 2000 so definitely very ahead of its time) and turns it into “communism bad, capitalism just needs a good leader for it to be perfect”.
Superman represents the absolute best in people. The ability to go beyond yourself and that anyone can make the difference. The Soviet Union in the comic prospers and goes past it’s more barbaric ways because of Superman’s influence. Nowhere is that ever mentioned in the film. Instead he kills thousands and brags about ending a war in 3 hours. This isn’t Superman Red Son. This is Justice Lord Superman through and through and it couldn’t be more obvious than giving the lobotomy’s for absolutely no reason in the film. It misses the point on almost every front. Especially his character. They spend more time with him in the movie, only for him to end up embarrassingly awful.
You’re allowed to feel however you like about the movie. I will just never see this movie as anything else but feeling like it was written by someone who failed to understand what feminism is and grew up learning about communism during the 1950’s.
Anyways, incredibly long comment over. I got to go to work.
I'm not going to read all that crap. The comic was better than this crap movie.
The Darksider best response
Completely valid points. I overlooked a lot of the political aspects of both and just focused on the story and how it affected me or didn’t, and to me, the movie did a better job of making me give a crap about Superman. That was my biggest takeaway. I experienced both the comic and movie back to back, and the movie had more of an impact. But I totally understand where you’re coming from, too.
@@dcauwatchtower Stop lying to your Subscribers, you didn't read the comic; you went on google and got some images.
You’re absolutely right. There’s no way I could’ve read the comic.
Wonder Woman being gay is kinda funny but makes her breaking her lasso and return less powerful then it was before her being attracted to him and caring for him enough to break her lasso and that’s why she was so hurt makes more sense to me then her being just a kinda friend and doing that for him that’s kinda weak by compression.
It also made her return the the fight with the Green Lanterns pointless as in the comic she was asked by Lois to help stop Superman from invading the US wile in the movie she just butted in, said some nonsense and buggered off
Superman Red Son is one of my favorite comics. I enjoyed the film but the big difference between the two is the overall theme. The comic is about sacrificing freedom for safety and the "big brother" state while the movie asks if Superman is good because of who he is or how he's raised
One of Stalin's sons is Pytor Rosev, the guy who killed Batman's parents
And he is also the Pete Ross stand-in.
I quite enjoyed this movie. I haven't read the comic so I didn't have anything to compare it to.
I'm going to hold off my opinion until I actually see the whole thing. I'm currently rereading the comic and seeing the difference between what I'm seeing in the book vs. what I can see on RUclips.
I’d need to reread it, but from what I remember the comic is amazing
Watch the motion comic. It's on RUclips.
@@SwornHeresy thanks for the recommendation!
Just watched it and I haven't read the comic either. I liked it.
I saw the motion comic on RUclips a couple of years ago. The one thing I was looking forward to which they cut out was the surprise ending where it turns out that Lex and Lois are actually on Krypton and are the ancestors of OUR Superman. Other than that, I REALLY enjoyed the movie. I also noticed the change in Batman's origin
I watched this one again and the edit of you asking what if Batman pressed the wrong button cracked me up equally both times
How did they get there im so confused
@@BDX423 you have to watch the motion comic and skip to the end. It's been years since I saw it. I don't think they said earth throughout the whole series which was slick. Again you'll have to watch the motion comic. It's on RUclips or at least it was

"sometime you have to kill people to not kill people you know what I'm saying" best quote 2020 obviously with the accent too...
Yes, I know what you are saying. You don't have to keep asking.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the differences from the comic came from a more welcoming attitude to communism/socialism as an economic system.
The comic didn't give attention to the gulags and political killings, but focused on the economic aspects: it only worked because it was Superman *making* it work through sheer force of will --- his great power and pure motives made it work. Yet, ultimately ... it still didn't work, because it necessitated him "putting the whole world in a bottle," so to speak.
The movie ignored the economic aspects and seemed to limit the message to, "The only way to ensure political conformity is to kill dissenters."
This effectively sidesteps the ongoing political debate over socialism, which is unfortunate.
Well that was a huge thing going on in the USSR so it makes sense. Still though, its unfortunate they ignored the economic side of it.
@@paradoxequinox4104 Yeah, I certainly think that should be *mentioned* in any treatment of communism.
But, here's why I prefer the comic book version: modern proponents of socialism/communism point to the political mass-murder as an *abuse* or an *excess* of the system, and not something intrinsic to it. "No,, no, no -- we want *democratic* socialism," they say, implying that because government control of the economy is *voted* upon, then it wouldn't entail gulags and re-education camps and political murder.
Rather than get caught up in that question, the comic book sort of grants that for the sake of argument and addresses socialism as an economic system. In fact, by ignoring the gulags and violence and corruption, and putting *Superman* in charge of the system, the comic book essentially sets up the Absolute Ideal, Best-Case Scenario version of Communism, and tackles that. In other words, the comic book tackles a "steel man" version instead of anything that could be construed as a "straw man." And the comic book concludes that, even under the BEST of circumstances and the BEST leadership, Communism is still intrinsically bad, because -- no matter what -- it still entails "putting the whole world in a bottle," which is contrary to human nature.
@@brianervin7643 Except in a lot of ways, the political killings and such were still happening under Superman... he was just ignorant of it due to his friendship with Pyotr Roslov. In a lot of ways, it's pretty obvious he was doing things that were shady and condemnable by Superman given that he is a holdover from old Stalin regime and actively advocates going out to do things like Stalin did to catch Batman. Superman immediately rejects this and calls Stalin's way of dealing with dissent "the old ways," indicating that he believes that Pyotr has stopped, but he hasn't, as was indicated by his conversation with Batman later. There is also an indication that Superman is too busy doing heroics to pay attention, as when Pyotr is going to respond to him and call him out on why those days were good, Superman interrupts him by basically saying, "I don't have time for your nonsense, I have some heroics to do!" and leaves him for what appears days... maybe even weeks.
Pyotr Roslov missing here creates a huge hole in the dynamic of Superman mind controlling others, it shatters his psyche on how much he can truly trust people. It also creates a reason for why Batman acts the way he does... in the movie he's just, "You're order, I'm chaos. Now let me do my Joker bit even though I'm Batman." Without him, Batman just seems like an utter psychopath with nothing legitimate to say about the story.
@@brianervin7643 In red son Superman is not a democratic socialist, he inherited the soviet system and was a marxist-leninst enlightened dictator
Aaaaand it also negates the ending, where Krypton, as it turns out, is Earth from the far future.
I think removing the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship took away from the scene where she breaks the lasso and leaves him shortly after.
I'm also never in favor of writers making Superman a murderer.
Yea having Superman murder specifically in this story takes away the point that he wants everyone safe in his bottle.
HOPELESS Ent.
Killing someone to prevent them from killing more seems pretty “world in a bottle” to me.
@@BlackCover95 Besides it's not like he hasn't killed before, he just really does not like to do it.

I didn't get a notification either I just saw it on my feed. Wtf RUclips?
I noticed the avatar the last Airbender DVDs in the background
Movie wasn't bad, but is nowhere near as good as the comic, they really killed several themes from the comic probably because they thought it would go over peoples heads which i think is an underestimation.
I liked change in Lana lang in movie . It made me almost cry
I liked it, as someone who beyond adores Elseworld stories, (and someone who salivates over my Red Son physical copy everyday) I think the movie did better at being a movie; and the comic is a better comic. Maybe that feels like a cope out, but it's my genuine opinion.
as logn as the spirit of the comic is preserved then fine. the movie has a time limit. a comic does not
I do feel the ending was the only part in which the movie felt weaker or worse, I'm also kinda upset they got rid of the true ending where it was revealed that rather than being an alien Superman actually came from a race of hyper evolved humans that were the direct descendents of Lex Luther which I always kinda liked as it made this Superman more unique
.
I liked it, felt like it took some inspiration from Injustice with a heartbroken Superman rather than a Joker-all it takes is one bad day-version, in his effort to make things right scene after scene he seems confused, sad, angry and everything takes it's toll, one of the most vulnerable Supes on screen. IMHO
What happened to the amazing ending from the comic?! They completely cut that out! Urgh.
That IS something I disliked, and forgot to mention.
The book is better. The movie does some really things, but the book is definitely better. There's some ham-fisted themes in the movie, I guess because they figured the audience there probably skews younger.
True , the comic book and movie are good but the movie isn’t as good.
It missed many subtleties that the comic had. Which kinda sucked
Opinions
After watching this movie, Justice League: Gods and Monsters and reading Kingdom Come, now I want a comic, a movie or even un fan made video with thoses 3 acting like the ghosts of christmas (A Christmas Carol) with Injustice Superman.

I haven't read the comic, but it seems like the movie had more focus and character development. Kinda odd considering comics usually have more time to do things like that.
A red son krypto the super dog would be crazy
I could see him accompanying Red Son Superman everywhere. Make him seem more intimidating.
Red Son is one of my all time favorite stories in all of DC.
BUT the film actually justifies motivations, and reasonings more.
Everyone from Superman, to Batman, to more. Makes more sense. On a human level than they do in the comic.
THANK YOU
@@dcauwatchtower Kiss my Ass.
Fuck go yourself.
The intro is really calming then suddenly just gets straight to the point is pretty good
you know what the oddest thing was? penguins voice coming from brainiac. it worked. paul williams ftw
To answer the question: No. Or rather, it depends. The Red Son movie is okay, but it's much less sophisticated than the comic. The comic actually trusts it's readers to think and understand more complicated ideas. The "Why don't you just put the world in a bottle?" scene was totally botched in the movie because they felt the need to drag out the explanation.
Similarly, the ending in the comic was much, much better. Luther deliberately setting the ship to explode, then lying about it to trick Superman, and Superman knowing this but going to save everyone anyway was genius. But in the movie, it's just poorly handled.
The opening half was to give batgirl a personality. But also got rid of the shock value
I thought the first half was so Bruce Timm could finally animate the Batman Batgirl relationship he had been hinting at for years in mainline DCAU
I think there was a comic before Killing Joke came out. That was made to retire Barbara Gordon from the Batgirl persona leading into the Killing Joke and they kind of tried to implament it into the movie, which didn't work
It gave her a personality by making her entire character about how much she wants to fuck Batman. Didn't really fix anything.
Joe Francis are you sure? I thought It fixed her back.
HOPELESS Ent. No, because in the adaptation she still got shot and paralyzed from the waist down. This is similar to what happened with Watchmen in that, aside from the first 30 or so minutes, in terms of a direct adaptation of the events of the story it’s spot on, but it’s lacking any of the actual thematic depth that’s the core of the entire story the original story had. Which is saying something, because the Killing Joke comic is one of Moore’s most vapid and shallow ‘edgy for the sake of edgy’ stories to date.

It doesn't follow the movie in many parts, it focus more on russian's and america's economical system and ideals, Batman is a mass murderer compared in the comic, they added moments that has nothing to do from the original novel, like the gulag scene.

The part where he killed Stalin felt so-weird to me...idk why? I guess Stalin *technically* deserved it but, it happened so soon and suddenly in the film. I guess it implies how much of an arrogant, dangerous leader supes was gonna be perhaps? Like I know he did some scary shit in this AU, but him killing Stalin (or maybe anyone similar) with zero hesitation felt out of character to me idk lol
I like this movie, I do think it might have needed to go longer with certain points it was talking about, sort of uncomplete but I am curious to read the comic one day to see the diffrence. I do like how it goes throught the ages.
Don't think Mark Millar will be overly angry. He is Mark Millar not Alan Moore

Nice Batmobile on the shelf behind you. I have the same model standing right next to me here :)
Nice! It took me years before I finally put it together, but it’s pretty cool!
I liked the movie, and I think it did a good job of telling what it was supposed to tell. However, I do have a few gripes with it. Superman killing Stalin seemed to me like they were afraid of people thinking Superman agrees with Stalin's ideals despite that not being the case. Wonder Woman changing personality didn't seem to have as great of an impact, it was more tragic for her to be in love with Superman only for his obliviousness and the Batman incident making her feel betrayed. And I don't get the logic of 'I grew up on the island full of women so I'm a lesbian'. By that logic shouldn't most of humanity be bisexual since they grew up with both men and women? The battle with the Green Lanterns also I thought missed the point since Superman dealing with them easily(the Amazons and other villains too) serves to show him as an unstoppable force that was brought down by that single sentence, but in here they almost beat him and Diana saves him and just bails.
The Stalin killing was a mirror of Superman killing President Lex in the Justice Lords episode of Justice League.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of that.

Red Son is a better story, in my opinion. I understand that, based on what you look for, the movie was a better demonstration of the Superman we know and love. But the comic just isn't about that. It's about breaking down Superman to his base characteristics, to finding what makes him the way that he is. In the end, we find that, despite all the weird stuff he does over the course of the book, he still ends up being a good person. I can't say the same for this movie. After all, he kills Stalin. If this movie is your bag, that's cool. But, I just wanted to lay out why I really like the book.
it was Stalin and note that was not easy for him to do.
I like this guy, I'm glad I found your channel!
No. I really like it though. But I like the ending in the comic. Great plot twist.
When even the background characters are recognized that's some major analysis.
Ohhh you need to check out our Easter Eggs videos then...
That one thing did also happen
The reason her sexuality is arguably important is because she follows him blindly for a reason that she thought she knew, but it turns out he wasn’t what she thought... which is kind of a theme. I’m not in love with a lot of the changes, but Diana’s is probably the least important. Especially compared to stalins death and the stalingrad bottle the world message...
I don’t think that makes sense.... at all what does her sexuality literally have to do with anything and it doesn’t come up later anyway.

I prefer the animated movie over the comic.
if by better you mean dumbed down to the point of being incoherent dribble than yes, it is better.
Damn it, you made me go and read the comic (thank goodness for DC Universe app, yes you can still read a ton of comics on the app *cough*CourtofOwlswaswayoverhyped*cough*) and to quote the only part of the video I watched- *snap-hiss, sip* “I like it.” But I too prefer the movie over the comic. All of the female characters were actually relevant in the movie, I loved all the changes they did for Wonder Woman. And I agree, the comic ending (not that future-Luthor descendants-time paradox-bullshit) was better but I get that it may not have worked the same way a fake giant alien squid would not have worked in a movie. Overall a good movie and decent adaptation.
The comic is better
6:00 Luthor sucks at chess!
The important thing to remember about movie adaptations of books is that books are not movies and movies are not books. Things that work as text in a comic panel can be different than things that work in a scene.
An example of a change that was a major improvement, that is conspicuous for being a change that did not make things worse, comes from the film adaptation of "The Watchmen". A panel with a lot of text explaining what is happening to Jon Osterman is replaced with the simple voice over of Jon Osterman saying "I experience fear, for the very last time.". This change works as the complete expository speech would be clunky and break up the flow.
Douglas Adams presented "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" as a radio serial, series of books, television miniseries, LP album, and a movie. While there are many parallels between all of the different methods of storytelling, Douglas Adams rewrote the material to make more suitable for the medium that he was using.
As for what the authors would think, the first film adaptation of an Asterix book basically used the panels of the original work as the story board. The film was completely faithful to the work of the original creators. Despite this level of fidelity, Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo hated the the animated feature "Asterix the Gaul". Why? Nothing done in the film was anything that Uderzo and Goscinny could put in a book. The second animated feature based on the adventures of Asterix was "Asterix and Cleopatra: The Greatest Story Ever Drawn", which included the characters singing and dancing-- things that Goscinny and Uderzo could not draw in a book.
I would not be surprised if the writers and artists behind the comic book are happy that the creators of the animated film changed the story in ways that could not be printed in a comic book.
You missed the point of the comic. The film ignored the point that both Lex and Superman were both prepared to go to any lengths to establish their version of Utopia and that both Capitalism and Communism have their good and bad points. There is no good or bad guy, as both have their flaws, but ultimately Superman is forced to realize what he had done and allows Lex to win, as he accepts it is for the best. The film didn't dare show that not only could Communism work to a large extent, but that other countries would volunteer to join the Communist regime. In the comic the only country that wasn't communist was the USA and their economy was failing until Lex came to power. Sadly WB chickened out showing Communism in any positive light and instead went Communism bad, Capitalism good.
Fair point.
Eh, I'd say the movie doesn't necessarily spell that out either. It's up to how you interpret things.
except communism isn't good. Millions die under it. That is what the movie points out. Red Son is probably the best but he got so many advantages like Brainiac to solve issues. H is less then the known communist leaders becasue he is genuinely a good guy and wanted to win the arguement. not by force.
Why do so many retards always say YoU JuSt DoNt UndERstAnD iT when someone says their Opinion?
@@Revkor Millions died under capitalism too. The comic showed that Communism could not only work, but be attractive to other nations. I agree it needed someone like Superman who is totally selfless and wants what is best for humanity, but that too was the point. It showed that no matter what his upbringing, he is still Superman.
Good characters and villains.
The twist was great and it has an emotional punch
9/10
Hey watchtower love you guys and the content you provide us with. If you see this comment JAMES how excited are you for the new justice league dark movie?!
Easter egg video would be nice
I personally liked the comic more due to the dynamic of luthor and superman staying not only the same, but also it having an explanation. It also stays true to luthor's ego and antagonism towards superman who is both smart and strong but he also forgets that he is also a god among humans.
I would like to see that Easter egg video
The comic is WAYYYYYY better
Nice Spongebob set
I’ve been looking forward to this
I know The Dark Knight Returns animated film is better than the comic IMO.
Comic is pretty ugly to look at but from what I remembered it’s cool. The continuation is even more horrendous
Personally I wished it was designed to look the old 40’s cartoon.
Actually Rayner was in the comic too
Yep, put him on screen in that moment
+1 for easter egg video!
I didn’t watch the movie for a while cause I thought it sounded weird but I finally did and I’m so happy i gave it a chance it was a really awesome story and very well put together . 5 star awesome !
