I used to work as a bank teller in Canada and I don't understand how she withdrew such huge amounts without any detection. If the client has over a 10k withdrawal, a large cash transaction report needs to be filed. We also have machines to withdraw the cash that happens in front of other employees in the main area. If we had to order money and it was in the vault, you can't open it without two sets of employee combinations. Sounds like this bank lacked internal controls.
I'm in the US and have withdrawn more than $10K from an account and all the teller said was that they had to send a report to the IRS the money was taken out.
@@V.E.R.O. Exactly. Same here in Canada. I withdrew $43,995 to buy my first new car & they reported that to the CRA (Canadian version of the IRS). Nothing happens really, they just report it & it's on record in case there are irregularities in your tax returns. It's to prevent laundering or if you declared bankruptcy a month later type of thing. Most people just get a line of credit & put a credit amount on it to buy big ticket items. If you've seen the film Sicario, that process is explained. Credit lines used to be untouchable since it was an account that only existed in credit & wasn't officially an asset. Credit lines with credit amounts are followed now. Usually these things are noticed immediately but auditing software has to be configured, tested & launched before it can be used, so there were a few years were people were just hiding money in credit (negative owing balances) on credit cards & credit lines. It's not only monitored now, but banks are required to pay interest on them as well (likely why they took their time).

Couple things. One, this elderly woman should have found herself an attorney and sued Frost Bank. I worked for a bank for many years, and for this teller to do what she did means this bank either had horrible internal controls 'or' they had horrible compliance with established controls. Either way, they are ripe to be sued and she should have done so. Two, never trust anyone that isn't a close family member worthy of your trust.
The bank carries insurance for this type of thing. This lady was reimbursed. The teller now owes all that money back to the bank's insurance company, and they have a GOOD law firm on retainer... ...the teller will go to jail.
@@anklebiter9116 The bank has substantial federal requirements it 'must' adhere to to remain in operation. Controls over customer assets are one of the most important of those regulations. It appears as though this bank has few if any of those controls in place and working. And for the record, insurance companies do 'not' insure banks from losses like this (i.e. insurance companies do no insure against criminal behavior). This bank knows its in a major bind with federal regulators over this and tried to mitigate that and a potential lawsuit that would make it even worse by reimbursing this woman.
@@DodaGarcia The bank returned her money to try and bury this fraud by one of their employees. Banks are 'required' to adhere to federal banking regulations, and this bank obviously did not, opening the door to them being sued. The video info is jumbled. It says the teller stole "almost $200K", then says she stole $140K. The vid title and video say she stole the money from an 86 yo woman, then describes how she did it as going to the bank, and stealing cash from the vault. So did she steal from the senior, steal directly from the bank or both?
140k is almost 200k... Ya 60k away from 200k & remember this is the news media. They'll do whatever to make the crime sound even worse. She originally stole from the woman. She was withdrawing the money in different amounts & sneaking it out of the vault at different times. So there was never any discrepancies in the amount of money inside the vault. Technically since the bank paid the old lady back you could say she stole from the bank, cause the 140k loss is now on them.
This happened to my Mom who was in her 80's when a Bank Of America employee stole $18,000 from my Mother's acct. Bank of America reimbursed her, and the employee who did it was charged, but she never did any jail time.

There should be a security alert in place when large withdrawals are taken from an account so that the owner of the account is aware and can confirm or deny. The bank had plenty of chances
There are checks and balances in place but obviously not at this bank, or she had management position that put her in a position to do this. Especially on IRA withdrawal

This has been happening in husband's own family. One of the sisters and her husband have been helping themselves to money and valuables for a few years now. The only difference in this case and my inlaws is that my mother in law allowed it then would complain about how much money they are costing her. We couldn't do a thing legally because Mom wrote the checks and allowed it to go on. Textbook abuser behavior from those 2. Mom just fell and broke her hip. The day after surgery they went and grabbed (stole) mom's car and didn't say a word to anyone. We knew it had to have been those 2 because of past behaviors. When confronted about the car she said "Mom said it was ok.". Of course nobody was around in the hospital room when this convo took place.... Mom isn't coming back from this I am sad to say, but I won't miss her weird dysfunctional relationship with her youngest daughter. Best advice for a senior is don't put your life savings in one bank. $200,000 is too much money to have in one bank!! What is really weird about this story is the branch manager and none of her coworkers, got suspicious, when they saw her carry the boxes full of money out of the bank? The bank manager should have noticed the large sums of money disappearing from the vault. If you take more than $10,000 in cash out of the bank any day, you are required to fill out all these forms required by the federal government and sign them. When this wasn't being done, why didn't the bank manager investigate? It sounds like either the bank manager was totally incompetent or was in on it.
To start. $200,000 is not too much for one bank account as they’re insured for up to $250,000. There’s no paper work required for withdrawals regardless the amount atleast in my state. They do need 3 forms of id and your ssn, nothing more. To deposit is a different story. It’s very similar to what you mentioned when DEPOSITING over $10,000.
This bank doesn't have any cameras and/or security guards?? If the client has over a 10k withdrawal, a large cash transaction report needs to be filed. We also have machines to withdraw the cash that happens in front of other employees in the main area. If we had to order money and it was in the vault, you can't open it without two sets of employee combinations. Sounds like this bank lacked internal controls.
Ya 180000 didnt catch anyones attention at the bank? Sounds like it could have been an inside job

I think she made fake withdrawals, then took that cash withdrawal directly from the vault. As for the amount discrepency, that's just lazy reporting.

Yeah I mean I'm wondering how the manager didn't notice anything You think there would check people's purses and bags when they leave
To start. $200,000 is not too much for one bank account as they’re insured for up to $250,000. There’s no paper work required for withdrawals regardless the amount atleast in my state. They do need 3 forms of id and your ssn, nothing more.

She can run and hide, but eventually prison awaits💯📚💰.
@@newlife8318 I have to check that out!
Employees suppose to work at the bank. Not bring money home with them.
isn't that a little late, should been notification every time withdraw was made, the bank failed to protect her account from its own employees what a shame.
Oops, my bad, aka planning in real-time.
🎯 exactly what I said. Where are the bank statements with her new balance showing these withdrawals. Something is seriously off with this bank, especially with an IRA withdrawal .
@@naturelover2292 I think the bank holding the IRA and the local physical bank itself are two different businesses that work together. That's why it was the IRA that contacted her over the low balance instead of the local physical bank. Things have changed a lot; if you walk into most banks now, they are just reselling the financial services of other larger banks, not their own.
I'm happy the old woman was able to defend herself and get a refund. Not every elderly can unfortunately. I hope they throw the book at her.
As a former capital one teller and teller manager, any large amount of withdrawal needs approval. No way she did this alone.
Can not trust anyone !!!! Throw the key away !!!!
*I know exactly how she feels. I have a scumbag sister who stole $55k+ from our retired parents. Then to boot, she is forgiven yet never giving a penny back.*
This bank teller needs to be arrested and sent to prison for life.
Hopefully she get at least 20 years in Prison.. she needs to be held Accountable...
