A wolverine isn't a wolf, it's like a big weasel. It's a vicious little beast that's highly territorial, and it's mean enough to chase away a bear. In the comics, Logan is only about 5'4, so it fits.

Yes, and Wolverine's tend to smell pretty foul, and steal from everyone else in those regions of the world. They have been known to take down polar bears, which is saying something since nobody survives that. I still laugh inside when Deadpool referenced comic book accurate Wolverine.

I’d heard that Hugh Jackman didn’t know what a Wolverine was when he was hired, and he first started to act like a wolf, and they had to tell him no, that’s not it.

@@leoda_lion4107 Logan/Wolverine definitely has the "smelly" part covered, all that body hair, plus all that drinking, smoking, and the 100+ years of living on the road, even the X-Men WITHOUT superhuman senses of smell should've been able to smell the difference between Mystique and the real deal.

@@alexthorpe6583 It's worse than that. NO ONE involved in these films knew what a wolverine was until after X-Men Origins: Wolverine. So at that point it was at least three or four movies in with everyone having this very fundamental misunderstanding, culminating in a character who should definitely have known better delivering a soliloquy about why wolverines howl at the moon. The cringe was very real.

During this time, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man were the face of Marvel, starting from the '60s. By the '80s and '90s, the X-Men had reached unprecedented levels of popularity. X-Men #1 (1991) remains the best-selling single-issue comic of all time, highlighting the height of "X-Men mania". In the '90s, the X-Men dominated not just comics but also expanded into video games, arcades, and animation. X-Men: The Animated Series became one of the most influential cartoons ever, introducing the team to a new generation of fans. For a time, the X-Men even surpassed Spider-Man in popularity and sales.
This all changed with the rise of the MCU, starting with Iron Man (2008). The Phase 1 movies reshaped Marvel's image, making The Avengers household names. Back then, Marvel couldn’t legally use the X-Men, Spider-Man, or Fantastic Four to begin their new shared universe, so they took a gamble on lesser-known heroes like Iron Man and built the MCU around The Avengers instead. The Avengers and their individual members were well-known among comic book fans but were largely unfamiliar to the general audience, with the exception of the Hulk and, to a lesser extent, Thor, who were the only two relatively well-known characters at the time.
For many people introduced to Marvel through the MCU, the Avengers became synonymous with the Marvel brand. As a result, the X-Men were often not recognized as part of Marvel, with some people even unaware that they were Marvel characters at all, associating the brand solely with the MCU. The same applies to the Fantastic Four, officially Marvel's First Family, who, in the eyes of many, were not seen as part of Marvel due to their lack of connection to the MCU. Anything outside the MCU was simply perceived as being unrelated to Marvel altogether by these new Marvel fans.
To many people, the idea of the X-Men crossing over with the Avengers felt as outlandish as Star Wars crossing over with Star Trek. In their minds, these worlds were entirely separate, with no connection. However, in the comics, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Avengers all coexist within the same universe. Spider-Man has a long history with the Fantastic Four, Wolverine has ties to Captain America and even joined the New Avengers, and Storm was married to Black Panther. The X-Men and Fantastic Four also played pivotal roles in major Marvel storylines, including The Infinity War.

What other commenters said about Mystique is true; she's a shapeshifter with the ability to mimic anyone, but she can't gain their powers. Wolverine/Logan's claws are adamantium, which is a virtually unbreakable metal. Mystique was able to mimic the claws, but not what theyre made of. So, when Logan sliced her "claws" off, that's why she screamed.

The X-Men, in 1963, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are often seen as a metaphor for racism and the Civil Rights Movement. The way mutants are feared, hunted, and discriminated against reflects the struggles Black Americans faced during the Jim Crow era. Professor Xavier and Magneto even parallel Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X's opposing approaches to equality.
Technically speaking, X-Man is the Wolverine guy. He´s called the Weapon X, and he's, in fact, a man.

Mystique is only able to take on the appearance of someone, not their powers. She was able to take on Wolverines claws because it's still an appearance when they're out.

I love *most* of these X-Men movies, but it’s worth noting that the films aren’t the best adaptations. At the time, studios were unsure if audiences would embrace the colorful, larger-than-life elements of the comics, so they toned things down alot and removed asspects that felt too much for audiences of the time. Comic books were even banned on set, but Kevin Feige, now President of Marvel Studios, secretly brought comics onto set for the actors to read and pushed for more accurate costumes, though his ideas were largely ignored.
To fit early 2000s trends, the X-Men wore black leather uniforms influenced by *The Matrix* (1999). Characters were also changed: Rogue became a younger, less powerful runaway, losing her Southern charm and superpowers she stole from Ms. Marvel, aka Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers). Iceman, originally one of the first X-Men in the comics, was made a teenager who joined the team later, while Cyclops and Jean remained among the first students.
The films focus heavily on Wolverine while sidelining characters like Storm, Rogue, and Cyclops. Cyclops, in particular, lost his role as the X-Men’s leader, frustrating comic fans. However, the recent *X-Men '97* (2024) has restored Cyclops' leadership and given neglected characters more attention, winning over fans of the films who never cared for certain character prior to X-Men '97. X-Men '97 is honestly one of the best Marvel projects since Infinity War, peak X-Men.
Despite the changes, the movies still offer a good introduction to the X-Men for those new to the franchise. Theres just better takes on the X-Men and their world in animation and comics.

    • @LittleGalaxyBoy
      @LittleGalaxyBoy 29 дней назад +6

Forgot to men but X-Men '97 has nothing to do with the X-Men films or the MCU. It's an animated series set within the '90s Marvel Animated Universe, acting as a follow up to the X-Men: Animated Series (1992 - 1997) which ended on a cliffhanger.
It's by Marvel Animation, a division of Marvel Studios but it's not set within the MCU. But it will most likely be the inspiration for the MCU X-Men whenever Marvel gets around to introducing Mutants to the MCU.

I was lucky, I grew up on the X-Men comics on the late 80s and early 90s, during its peak period, and initially when this movie came out I was simply excited to see it in live action. We got incredibly lucky to have heavyweights in the form of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen to play their roles, and whilst it was somewhat muted in color/tone and not comic accurate, it made up for it by taking seriously the political / moral angle that the comics often explored. Magneto depicts the road we should not take of vengeance and ruthlessness, and Xavier depicts the stark neccessity of balance in moral choices.

Spider-Man did not get his powers because of the X-gene, so he is not a mutant.
From Screen Rant: "In Marvel terminology, Spider-Man is actually a mutate - someone whose genetic structure was altered by an outside force, rather than a mutant born with the X-gene. Mutates are incredibly common in Marvel comics, with examples including Spidey villains Electro and Sandman, as well as allies Captain America and the Hulk."

This movie pretty much got people to take superhero movies seriously again. After 1997's goofy Batman & Robin bombed critically and commercially, most studios didn't wanna touch superheroes anymore. But when X-Men came out in 2000, it showed audiences that superhero stories can be about more than "good guys vs. bad guys" and selling toys to kids. The X-Men story is basically inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, but the messages and meanings can be applied to any marginalized group, the intolerance they experience, and their struggle for acceptance in society.
And Kevin Feige - the mastermind of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - got his start as an Associate Producer on the X-Men films. So we very much would not have the MCU without the success of the X-Men movies.

Wolverine's main power is his healing factor, but a side effect of that is that he also has heightened senses. He can identify and track someone by scent alone. That was how he knew that it was Mystique approaching him and not Storm. And yes, the comic book costume that Wolverine typically wears is bright yellow with black accents. You can see Hugh Jackman wearing it in "Wolverine & Deadpool". It was the first time in over two decades of playing the role that he actually wore his comic book accurate costume

I like that you liked the world aspect. I grew up on X-Men stuff. The cartoons and eventually started looking at comic books (these were on racks at my grocery stores and it's that or crochet magazines). It's even larger in scope there though will be in later X-Men films to a world wide geopolitical situation including many working parts and factions.
That is a big part of the appeal of the X-Men franchise I think. That and the realism where they are under thumb in society. It isn't the usual superhero fare where godly powered people exist or nukes with emotions if you will and simply run around doing whatever they please with utter impunity. And 2-dimensional citizens pointing up them in the sky "Look! It's Theme Guy!". Where this is more realistic.
In a jealous world that outwardly asses potential threats to it's own longevity this is what you would get. Distrust in the differently abled (yes, this is a big metaphor) partly bred in humanity itself and an innate knowledge that it can happen to anyone. We have non-powered factions being equal players in our plot and those who would exploit the powered, military is emphasized of course. And in fighting among the powered as well. All driven by class warfare and generally to one individuals benefit or another. And the core which is then the dueling ideologies of MLK Jr. (Xavier) and Malcom X (Lehnsherr) as to what will put the species in a better position in society.
I think that's a good summary and why it is such a great concept that the entertainment industry put so much resources into it for decades now. You can also look at modern comic book superhero films like Avengers and Superman and see where they started to infuse those politics and drama into their stories as well. Different and therefore unexpected as you put it which is what is entertaining about it. The kind of stuff you can think about going back into real life and the world.

The first original X-Men were In 1963's monumental UNCANNY X-MEN #1, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced "Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Beast, Iceman, and Angel" to the world and transformed pop culture as we know it.

Yup, so as Marvel fans, we basically started off with "Blade" (1999), "X-Men" (2000), and "Spider-Man" (2002). The second Blade (2002), the second X-Men (2003), and the second Spider-Man (2004). We had new Marvel movies, with "The Fantastic Four" in 2005 and the "Ghost-Rider" in 2007, and both had sequels. Toss in a third Blade movie and Spider-Man again, and then the two Andrew Garfield "Amazing Spider-Man" films, the first Hulk film, and the continuing X-Men, and we had a fair bit of Marvel before the MCU started with "Iron Man" in 2008.

Cyclops' eyes are portals to another dimension that exists as nothing but concussive force (no heat, no flame). The only things that defeat the force are his eyelids and the ruby quartz plate in his visor. In this film, there's a dial on the side of the visor to adjust the beam angle more narrowly or widely. By practicing, Cyclops can improve his aim and accuracy. If he cuts loose with the full force of the beam, he can hurt or knock over even very strong heroes and villains.

When it comes to movies, a lot of times they have multiple things to touch on to the point where the relationships between characters gets neglected when making a movie, especially when you have so many characters that need screen time. In some ways tv shows are better when it comes to getting to know characters especially when there used to be 20+ episodes per season because you have more time to get to know the characters & their relationships. Did you recognize Magneto as Gandalf from Lord of the Rings? There are so many different Mutants with different abilities that anything is possible.

A bit of trivia: Stan Lee created the mutants so that he could have an "easy-go-to" for explaining superpowers without the need for a complicated backstory about how the main character/s got their powers (you can find bits of interviews on yt, its so funny). Also, remember these characters came out in the middle of the last century, a period where there was a lot of activism and movements towards equality for people of color. The "mutants" are an allegory for how people IRL judge and discriminate others, based on traits they were born with (like skin color). So it was also a clever way of Stan Lee puting his 2 cents sort of speak, towards that debate at the time c:

Funny enough, originally Wolverine's claws were just part of his costume. They weren't inside his hands. However, later retcon/rewrite would establish that the claws are a part of him internally after being experimented upon by the government in the comics. His mutation/mutant power is actually his self-healing ability.

Wolverine has been modified. His regenerative powers keep him alive after he had adamantium bonded t his skeleton. Adamantium is one of the strongest materials in the universe, so it's nearly unbreakable. Mystique could look like she had his claws, but he cut them off because she doesn't actually have adamantium claws. Her powers, while impressive, can't mimic metal that strong. Wolverine also has powerful tracking ability through his sense of smell, so he could smell her in spite of her form.

Mystique doesn't take other mutants' powers when she takes their shape. Her claws weren't metal. Just flesh and bone shaped like Logan's claws. That's how he cut them off. She's just a shape shifter. Incredibly intelligent and highly trained but just flesh and bone. Like the statue. She wasn't marble. She was just the same shape and color as the statue. Still flesh and bone.
Eric is complicated. You're going to like his story. His view on humans and their intolerance was formed when he was that little Jewish boy in the Nazi concentration camp.

Known commonly as mustelids are the otters, badgers, raccoons, skunks, weasels, ferrets, martens, the wolverine, and even the red panda. But you're incorrect about them being a type of weasel. Weasels are in their own subfamily. Wolverines are more closely related to martens. However, your last comment isn't fully correct either. They are actually more closely related to bears than wolves, and even more closely related to pinnipeds like seals and walruses. Evolution is amazing....ly bizarre.

By the 1990s, X-Men was the no.1 superhero team/comic book series by Marvel.
But the success would 'evolve' even further with becoming Marvel's 2nd franchise on film.
The original longest running, shared universe with it's first major, superhero team.
Although they were around for 30 years plus at this point, their meteoric rise through multimedia made them unstoppable (animated series, toys video games, etc).
From their further rising, came this 'ultimate' first installment.
Hyper-realistic with social commentary and a few other things in between without being a overly 'comic-book' movie.
The late Richard Donner and his wife, Lauren-Shuler Donner were executive producers (The Donners' Company) of the film series.
Great cast, good writing, bold direction and treatment of the characters.
Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Hugh Jackman (his film debut) as Wolverine would become seminal to this saga.
Almost 25 years on film and most of it succeeded more than failed.
If you wish to journey onward, prepare for a real evolution.
