This is one of the most influential action thrillers of the past 25 years. Before this, the James Bond franchise was the big spy action movie franchise, and it was full on fantasy gadgets and over the top "save the world" ridiculousness. Fun, but completely outside reality. This franchise brought things back to earth and started the trend of gritty thrillers we are still in now. It also popularized the quick cut shaky-cam fight scene that has become so over-used now. John Wick basically wouldn't exist without this franchise.
The Bond movies were escapism, more than action, Dr No was a thriller, but action sells better, so later Bond movies were action films. The setting was things people would never be able to afford to do, and doing things nobody would be able to do. It was escapism. Bourne was the first mainstream non-noir film that brought some realistic (in terms of being set in places normal people would know) action into spy movies.
To add to your comment about the quick cut shaky-cam fight scenes, the Bourne sequels really took that to an over the top level. The first (Identity) was directed by Doug Liman and by comparison has smoother action than the sequels (Supremacy and Ultimatum) directed by Paul Greengrass. Greengrass didn't even seem to be concerned when the action would go out of frame during a sequence. I heard Matt Damon much preferred working with Greengrass, but as a viewer I prefer Liman's directing.
As far as the quick cut/shaky cam thing, it had already been (over) used by directors like Simon West and sometimes Michael Bay. I personally have little trouble following a Greengrass fight/chase scene but I still can't follow the flashback scene in Con Air that supposedly shows what Cage's character did to end up in that prison. I say "supposedly" because I can't follow that fight AT ALL. All things being equal though I still like Liman's style better. Too bad he can't stay on schedule/on budget to save his life/career.
Matt Damon has said in interviews that the reason he looks so stressed in some of the crowded Paris shots is because they didn't get permission to shoot at places like train stations, and just shot it guerilla style instead. They had to get the shot and get out before anyone caught them.
I was lucky to have a buddy who bought a well-rebuilt original Mini in the Cooper Works style. What a thrilling go-kart ride. Anyone who enjoyed the chase sequence here should check out the original "Italian Job" for more Mini mayhem.
The use of memorable actors in small roles, like Julia Styles and Clive Owen, brought more of the audience's attention to what those characters said and did. That's a nice touch.
Julia was a big part of the success of the franchise every scene she was in even with very few lines she killed it in a roll so small it could easily end up on the cutting room floor.
Julia Styles character of Nicky was originally supposed to die, but they had to reshoot the ending and couldn’t get the actress back, so she just sort of disappears. But this led to her having bigger roles and the sequels so glad it worked out for her
I think she's the perfect spinoff for a TV series. Both in her backstory, but also everything she does in her own counter-espionage operation. It'd also be nice if it turned out she didn't die in Syntagma Square.
I like how the movie stays one step ahead of the audience and Jason. You're right there with him, and it makes you sympathize with his character. Not to mention the action is badass. I'm glad you started this series, Nat!
What really put it so far above other action thrillers of the time was that it was an all-star cast, even for the small roles. Julia Stiles, the blonde assistant, had just come off of doing some big movies and was becoming a decently big name at the time, and Clive Owen, the guy that attacks Jason and Marie at the farm house/cottage, was an A-list British actor as well. And of course Franka Potente had just come off of doing Run Lola Run. Chris Cooper had just done American Beauty, and of course, there's Brian Cox. There are like zero weak links, zero. Stellar action flick.
@@adamvialpando106 speaking of Cruise (sorta), I just had a moment the other day with Glen Powell now that he's gotten some fame in The Dark Knight Rises. I kind of agree with Jason's tactic of not being armed against police and security; it does not immediately alarm and elicit a firefight, that would escalate and slow his movement significantly. And speed and stealth are his main skills.
Bourne knows that police and security are not necessarily the "bad guys." They're just men doing their jobs, and he can easily incapacitate them without taking their life.

I also agree that there's a chemistry with the 2 leads that is very addicting to watch. I also watched the dvd featurettes a bunch of times, which go in depth on some of the director's choices for cinematography. Keeping things mostly hand-held, clinging to his roots as an independent filmmaker and staying relatively low budget was a very conscious decision to keep the story grounded and realistic. Even things like the bathroom scene of Jason cutting Marie's hair, there is a clear choice to make it romantic and raw (which is true to the book if I remember right). This movie also does an excellent job setting the scene for the future movies. It ramps up hard in action and thrills from here, and the 2nd movie is my personal favorite.
I always wanted to be able to show someone the Bourne films and see their first time reactions. Your reaction is great and really fun, and I hope you'll react to the 4 sequels on your channel as well. I'm a big fan of this film series, and i think you're in for an incredible ride with how this franchise progresses up to the most recent Bourne film from 2016. Enjoy!
The first Bourne is a really solid spy flick. Each entry in the original trilogy gets better as they continue on. Bourne Ultimatum is my personal favorite. Nice reaction!
I know dropping the 🔫 seems weird & a bad idea, but it's likely just as much a part of his training as his reflexive combat skills. Being found with a 🔫, trying to get past security with one, or ditching one is a huge way to draw attention. He takes it with him just long enough to keep people from following him, but ditches it as soon as no one is watching. Same idea with ditching the coat, yeah it's cold, but when the cops wake up they're going to radio a description of him, height, weight, age, hair, shirt, pants. The jacket is the easiest part of that factor to change, & has the biggest effect at distance. Most of the weird things he does throughout the movie are actually tradecraft. Same with his luck or premonitions, it's all the things he knows, but doesn't know how.
This movie was so groundbreaking from every angle. From having a gritty sense of realism to the action to the commentary on surveillance and ethics of spying. It is actually an interesting take on post 9/11 America and questioning on the murky lines between freedom and security. Jason Bourne is definitely a trained fighter and marksman, but he is still a realistic human being who uses whatever is at his disposal to dispatch his enemies or evade capture. And his guilt and sense of morality causing him to lose his sense of self is tragic the more the story goes on. I know the 2016 film gets a bad rep, but even that movie deserves more love than it got, especially since its commentary on the danger of social media aged so well. I'm hoping they do get a sixth going to wrap it all up soon.
That car you said doesn't really handle like a sports car is an original Austin Mini. Believe it or not, those things have a pretty rich racing heritage. Very small and light wight with an innovative suspension, they've competed and won on everything from asphalt to dirt in some fairly prestigious racing events.
The car used in the first chase scene is a Mini Cooper. This was in 2002, the same year the Mini was introduced to the US. Excellent product placement. Jason's memory loss was more than likely a traumatic disassociative fugue state. Cognitive dissonance of the training and conditioning bumping up against the thought of killing a child was too much for his brain.
Great reaction! This is such an iconic movie (unofficially credited for starting the whole... shaky-cam fight scene trend) and it's one of my absolute favorites. "Look at what they make you give" is a such a great line and I say it often, lol.
My wife and I went to Marseille on our honeymoon and a couple months after we got back we watched this movie, which I had seen before many times in my teens. It was wild watching him walk down the Vieux Porte and being like, "WTF we ate gelato right there!!"

This movie revolutionized the fast-cut action sequences that action movies emulate today, but surprisingly most movies today fail to capture what makes it work. In every action sequence in Borne, you know *exactly* what is happening the whole fight because every cut exists to show only what you need to see. Every shot adds clarity. Most movies today use this as a cop out to avoid showing the looser choreography. Its why the Borne Identity still holds up so well all these years later
This is the reaction I have been waiting for. The reaction where we finally get to see the drinks and snacks that Natalie has been pointing to at the start of every reaction. Thank you Natalie. Now I can rest.
17:38 - one of the few moments in this movie where they show that Marie is smart and capable. In Ludlum's book, Marie is a college professor and is a lot more mentally capable than depicted in this movie.
Such a wonderful, rewatchable movie. It kicks ass. Chris Cooper, Julia Stiles, Brian Cox, and Clive Owen in small supporting roles nailed it. The next two are pretty good as well. I still like this one the most. But the next two are absolutely wonderful.
Nice. I'm glad you said that bit about this movie knowing what it is. It's a common reference I make when I'm rating a movie. Even if I don't have a great time with a movie, maybe it's not my style, I won't bash it if it knows what it is and delivers that experience.
It a very "European" movie that didn't have to educate the audience (like the difference between Luc Besson "Nikita" and Michael Bays awful remake "Codename Nina"). Just the fact the locals speak local language (french, german) and the street police actually is really capable - makes this a joy to watch as it takes its audience seriously. The female character is also really well casted. Franka Polente (German actrees) playing Marie is so believable real in her reaction and presence.
I never got to see this in the theater, but when it came out on DVD, I immediately bought it. My friends and I watched it and sat there almost missing plans that night watching it. Such a great movie.
17:40 I love this scene because in the original they actually did go through all the mess and it really made Marie more of a nervous suspicious person than it had to... and then in this cat and mouse story with high tech spy stuff... THIS Marie just Occam's Razors the heck out of it.
Since you liked this movie, Natalie, you are going to really, really love the next film. Also, there are five movies in the Bourne franchise, and all of them are worth watching. 👍😊
Love these films, at least the first three. So glad to see you like it. Truthfully I love the exit music right at the very end. It is of course, ""Extreme Ways" by Moby! As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. Have a wonderful holiday season.
As always, some of the best movies are based on books. The Bourne series was written by Robert Ludlum from 1980 to 1990. The franchise has grown via multiple authors. They did a good job with the movie trilogy, if I remember correctly was one of the first shakey cam action films.
Saying these were based on the books is...generous. the books cover a completely different story, and the characters are substantially to completely different. These films' relationship to the books are closer to, say, Rings of Power to LotR, though these films are at least solid action movies, they're just not related to the actual books
John Wick is as if someone saw the Bourne films and decided to do style over reality. Not a bad thing, but if you want a more grounded spy story these movies are a great place to start.
12:36 Goes back even farther than that. '70 Charles Bronson taught some community members how to defend their neighborhood. A pencil was one of the things he taught about.
Hi Natalie. First of all you are so much fun to watch. You are adorable and have the most endearing laugh. Of course your insights are what keeps me watching your reactions. The references to the Wick franchise are more than reasonable. The Wick movies are chock full of shout-outs and tributes to other films. There are a ton of scenes which are references to other movies, including this one. For example there is a scene in (I think JW4??) where when the whole world is looking for John it cuts to a black woman radio DJ giving the world an update on John's location. There is an older movie called The Warriors about a small NY street gang who are being hunted and are just trying to get back to their home turf. It cuts a few times to a black woman DJ is keeping all the gangs up on where the Warriors are. The leader of one of the other small gangs in that movie is the same actor who plays the head of the "clean-up crew" in the Wick movies. Anyway, to say that aspects of many movies are found in the Wick movies is accurate and very intentional. John putting a gun together from parts etc from a Clint Eastwood western etc. If you ever feel the urge to watch an old cult classic movie, maybe give The Warriors a try. Anyway, loved your reaction. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday and a very Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
Great movie of one of my favorite books, the only thing the movie misses is the identity crises and romance between Jason and Marie, in the book Jason keeps getting evidence of his life as an assassin and he struggles with believing he might be a killer with Marie constantly telling him he does not act or think pike a killer. There was a miniseries starring Richard Chamberlin for this book that covered this aspect much better but Matt daemon sells the action so well I still think he has the better version.Happy Holidays to you and your family Nat
Great reaction to one of my long term favourite movies. One thing you didn’t mention was the atmosphere created in the film - something I really connect with.

Stunt work should be more appreciated and there should be an Oscar for it.
Didn't they have to do re-writes and re-shoots and delay the release of the movie because it was supposed to come out right after 9/11?
That car you said doesn't really handle like a sports car is an original Austin Mini. Believe it or not, those things have a pretty rich racing heritage. Very small and light wight with an innovative suspension, they've competed and won on everything from asphalt to dirt in some fairly prestigious racing events.
The MGS1 music in the background surprised me at the start, enjoy the holidays
Jesus Christ,
it’s _Jason Borne reaction!_
Love the Bourne trilogy. No flashy "hoolywood" stuff
I mean…you need Hollywood level coordination, talent, and leverage to pull off a car chase like that in a major city like Paris, sooo….
@@sergkr2d2 Yeah true, but you know what I mean.. No mclaren's, no 1000 bullets, no dumb flips in the air for the fighting scenes, etc..
Trilogy if you only count the first 3 out of 5 Bourne films
Omg!!! You’re gonna love these movies… I’m so here for this… well done Miss Gold👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Stoked you're watching these, one of my favorite series
My wife and I went to Marseille on our honeymoon and a couple months after we got back we watched this movie, which I had seen before many times in my teens. It was wild watching him walk down the Vieux Porte and being like, "WTF we ate gelato right there!!"
I am so glad you watched this! This story gets so much deeper. Please continue. This is an intellectual/action movie. Love you!
I've been wanting you to watch this for so long Nat! This trilogy is amazing
I'm really looking forward to watching Supremacy and Ultimatum with Natalie's running commentary. I hope it's soon.
Hey Natalie, u made me fall in love with movie reactions, I just wanna thank u because I’m such a fan. Im from Brazil so I just wanna say u are such an authentic person and your reactions just make me happier even when they’re sad I feel like i have somebody to share with. I just wanna thank you for everything! I hope u achieve everything u dream and all the best for u and your family!!!❤
You are amazing!!!!!!
I’m sorry if my English is not the best, but thank you!!
The entire Bourne trilogy is freaking amazing, but this first installment is my favorite. Another great reaction, Natalie. Happy holidays!
This is the reaction I have been waiting for. The reaction where we finally get to see the drinks and snacks that Natalie has been pointing to at the start of every reaction.
Thank you Natalie. Now I can rest.
these 3 films are one of my favorite trilogies. so good
This whole Borne franchise is amazing. Love it!
15:30 Prophetic statement Natalie. 😎👍
Franke Potente (Marie) was great in Run Lola Run too.
Disturbing movie that
17:38 - one of the few moments in this movie where they show that Marie is smart and capable. In Ludlum's book, Marie is a college professor and is a lot more mentally capable than depicted in this movie.
Such a great franchise. Very little swearing and no blood or guts. Just a lot of action and great storylines. Great for the family to watch.
Such a wonderful, rewatchable movie. It kicks ass. Chris Cooper, Julia Stiles, Brian Cox, and Clive Owen in small supporting roles nailed it. The next two are pretty good as well. I still like this one the most. But the next two are absolutely wonderful.
The *levels* of reaction when realising who arranged to kill Conklin is awesome! 😊
Nice. I'm glad you said that bit about this movie knowing what it is. It's a common reference I make when I'm rating a movie. Even if I don't have a great time with a movie, maybe it's not my style, I won't bash it if it knows what it is and delivers that experience.
Great reaction, Natalie! Onward to more Bourne!
That intro was fantastic! You made me chuckle when you got your memory back lol
"Let's do this!"
Yea it's one of the best action movies of all time, put together really well. I really hope you do the whole trilogy, it's definitely worth it.
Natalie, loved your responses to this movie, looking forward to you seeing No.2. Stay safe and well.
17:40
I love this scene because in the original they actually did go through all the mess and it really made Marie more of a nervous suspicious person than it had to... and then in this cat and mouse story with high tech spy stuff... THIS Marie just Occam's Razors the heck out of it.
Nat reacting to movies is great but Nat reacting to a movie she’s surprised by how much she likes is a real treat.
This whole trilogy is goated. Please do the others!
These are some of my favorite movies. Awesome to see you diving into them too!
One of the only spy series i really enjoy. Glad to see you react to it!
This reminded me of why I like you so much! Most fun I've had watching a reaction in weeks! Pure Gold!
Since you liked this movie, Natalie, you are going to really, really love the next film. Also, there are five movies in the Bourne franchise, and all of them are worth watching. 👍😊
Terrific reaction! Can't wait for your reactions to the rest of the trilogy!
Love these films, at least the first three. So glad to see you like it.
Truthfully I love the exit music right at the very end. It is of course, ""Extreme Ways" by Moby!
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. Have a wonderful holiday season.
The next two are even better!
I can't wait for you to see the rest of the Bourne movies.
You had so much FUN with this one, can't wait til the next :)
So glad you loved this movie! One of my favorites. Can't wait for the rest of the trilogy.
Omg yes! It feels like no one ever reacts to this series
Looking forward to seeing you do the rest!
So excited for Nat to watch the next 2 movies. Ultimatum is my favorite.
The "Wolverine Costume" guide censoring the pen injury made me bust out laughing
They get better and better!
I'm sure you will be watching the sequels to this, but you should also check out The Long Kiss Goodnight. Fantastic flick with a similar premise.
Merry Christmas, Natalie…and to Nuggets everywhere!
Wow, this is one of my favorites, glad you enjoyed it.
I especially love that song at the end!
Great reaction to one of my long term favourite movies. One thing you didn’t mention was the atmosphere created in the film - something I really connect with.
