It says at 2:50 that Loras was the heir of highgarden when it was His older brother Willas Tyrell. Is this video following the books or the show in this regard or is it simply a mistake?
@Fabian Kirchgessner Yeah, I know. Stannis commanded his men from the rear, as Tywin Lannister did, if we wanted to talk referencing the books. But it's a cool line and I like it nonetheless.
@Fabian Kirchgessner So Martin doesn't understand his own characters, because he wrote Blackwater? And yeah, that absolutely is Stannis. It doesn't matter how many had to die so long as he could take his rightful Throne.
@Fabian Kirchgessner Yes, it was his duty to take the throne to save the realm (or vice versa.) And it was the duty of every one of his soldiers to die if necessary in order to put him there. Stannis accepted this. This is not a contradiction. Keep in mind this is the same man who sacrificed his stepfather, executed his brother, would have murdered his nephew and will murder his daughter. (And he will) Duty and sacrifice are part of the same coin to Stannis. Also, he only let the Wildlings become his subjects so long as they bent the knee. They refused, which made them his enemies, for Kings only have subjects and enemies, according to Stannis.
@Fabian Kirchgessner I didn't condemn him for having Renly killed, merely pointed out that he did it. Stannis is the One True King, ruled by justice and duty. And he murdered his brother. A good act does not wash out the bad and all that. Ok, now you're just making excuses. In the books, Lord Florent didn't even get the chance to present his terms to either Stannis or the Lannisters. He had him executed for thought crime. And in the show, Stannis had him executed for refusing to tear down the sept under Stannis' orders. Moreover, you can tell from the scene that Stannis disliked having to do it, he simply regarded it as his duty. Either way, he had no right to burn him. The punishment for Treason in Westeros is beheading - NOT burning. So either way, he isn't acting as a traditional King would. As I said, he will burn her in the books. And Stannis in the books expresses disgust at the concept of harming Edric Storm in the same book that he orders that boy's execution. What's the point about him naming her his heir? He is capable of changing his mind, and does it often based on circumstance. They didn't attack "his" realm. They attacked the Night's Watch, outside the Iron Throne's jurisdiction. And he wasn't in any position to punish them. They're not his subjects. The point is moot. Also, can people please stop saying "Stannis would never..." in regards to something cruel? Yes, he absolutely would.
@Fabian Kirchgessner I dont think it is particularly cruel, it's just realistic. Stannis knows that this is his one chance to take the city and crush the Lannister menace. Though thousands may die, they will win the war. Stannis sees that the Lannisters are prepared to mount a vigorous defense, but he knows the casualties here to end the war will be worth it if he wins. Unlike other kings *cough* Renly *cough*, he has no illusions about the cost of war, and wont delude himself or his men.
Honestly winterfell was such a disappointment. They should've watched a few kings and generals videos before writing that battle. Fools dug a trench and placed their army in front of it
Stannis is indeed the rightfull heir, but he sadly never stood a chance of capturing king`s landing. To dispel some of the hopes and dreams of his fans: if edmure had allowed tywin to pass, the tyrell`s would have just marched on stannis` back on their own(at tywin`s request), since they CANNOT have him win due to his wife. if the vale joined robb, it would only have pulled robb east to link up with them, given the westerlands more time to recover and force tywin to retreat south, thereby linking up with mace, even earlier. thanks to the personalities of balon greyjoy, tyrion, baelish and doran martell, no-one else was rising against the lannisers. stannis and robb were doomed the moment renly declared himself king(curse you melisandre!). heck, scarp that, I think with all the people in power at that particular time, the lannisters were certain to win the second tywin beat roose bolton. tyrion and doran silenced dorne, baelish the vale, renly and melisandre wrecked stannis` chance to claim the throne and created the tyrell-lannister alliance, and balon, theon and roose made sure robb was doomed in the long run. some things just aren`t meant to be sadly. :(
I know this is besides the point you're trying to make (that they should of had the trebuchets inside the walls at Winterfell) but those trebuchets were WAY too far away to fire over the walls. The biggest trebuchets with the heaviest counterweights could fire 200-300lb (90-133kg) rocks maybe 1000 feet (333 yards). GRRM has stated that King's Landing was slightly bigger than Paris or London. Meaning a trebuchet as far back as it is claimed to be would be MILES away from the walls. For a trebuchet to be able to fire into the river they'd have to be pretty much directly behind the walls. Or on Aegon's High Hill between the Red Keep (outside of it) and the river.
This battle was inspired in the 7th century where caliphate arabs launches invasion by seas and Constantinople uses Greek fire ships to burn down a large arab seas ships.
@@Sam-eu9go First 5 seasons of the show didn't suck, ratings still are high. And even if it sucks, why you need to be mean? Everyone enjoys different things, it is very rude to judge people by shows they watch.
At 2:32, Melisandre made a mistake in thinking that she saw two futures. They were actually the same future but at different points in time. Stannis did kill Renly and take his army, but Ser Garlan, wearing Renly's armour, defeated him.
its a returning theme in the books, for example the "possible futures" Daenerys sees is book 2 are all events which do happen one point or another, with usually a "monkeypawish" twist
"I have felt from the beginning that Stannis was a greater danger than all the others combined." - Tywin Lannister Note that this was when Renly had 100 000 men, Robb 20 000 and reserves at home, and Stannis barely 5000 with mercenaries.
As much as I like the Blackwater episode we got in the show, I do wish they had been able to do it as it happened in the books. Think it would've been even more epic. But I understand we were lucky to even get what we got, back then they didn't have as much of a budget per season.
"My hirelings betray me, my friends are scourged and shamed, and I lie here rotting. I thought I won the bloody battle. Is this what triumph tastes like?" Tyrion lannister

The Winds of Winter will potentially have four major battles: 1 The battle of Fire in Meereen 2 The battle of Ice in the North 3 The battle of Steel in the Stormlands 4 The battle of Blood around Oldtown I really hope you will cover them in your channel.
Oldtown will likely feature a Greyjoy threat. It rests along the Western coast to the South, far from any assistance from King's Landing which is situated next to Blackwater Bay to the East. One raid from Euron to access secrets from the Citadel of the Maesters...but I digress. Why attack now? Maybe to land forces? No that wouldn't work unless the Tyrells and Martells have been eliminated/severely weakened at this point.
Truth...the only thing he really says is that his ships are burning after the wildfire explodes. He really didn't do anything in the book version either 😂
@@thornmug2791 Magnificent idea! Let the enemy see them - the knowledge we possess a true WMD of siege warfare will surely be enough to cause panic. Also, this shrewd tactic will convince Night King *we* are the ones sieging Winterfell. It will totally subvert his expectation and we all know this equals victory.

@@jhon-wm5ok No, the battle was drastically different in the show than the books, this video showcases the book version and while in the show it was still amazing, the book version made a little more sense
Edmure's name could have been mentioned. He was the leader of the Tully army, that inadvertently prevented the retreat of Tywin's host into Westerlands with openly engaging and defeating him in the Battle of the Fords. Robb and Brynden were furious, when they heared of this upon returning to Riverrun.
One of my least favorite parts of the books. As the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, Edmure is one of Robb’s most important bannermen. There was ZERO reason for Robb to keep him in the dark about the full extent of his plans. Robb told him to “hold riverrun” but how can he reasonably expect Edmure not to at least defend the Riverlands, especially after all the fire and slaughter they had suffered up to this point. It was one of Robb’s most costly strategic blunders.
I didnt have beef with Stannis until he burned Shereen alive, like wtf is wrong with you? I can understand keeping her locked due to her illness, but still he was a shitty father.
@@golayath137 I heard a lot of people just love Stannis from the books, so I imagine things were different back then. And the current Stannis was a military genius and a good swordsman. But how he approached the North, and faced Bolton, and burning his daughter, he was pretty delusional at the end. Also, his brother's assassination was underhanded, and that didn't really help him in the end
Bogdan Gabriel Onete also it’s very unlikely that he will kill shireen seeing that she’s at castle black and not with him. (In the book series of course) also he “hasn’t” actually fought Ramsay yet. I mean Ramsay says he won the fight but no one actually knows seeing that there were suppose to be some northern houses who are going to betray Ramsay.
@@Longshanks1690 no he will not.1. He already did burn 3 man alive who did cannibalism due to starvation. 2. He loves is daughter more then himself. They say it themself. thats why they let him burn is daughter alive. to cut lose ends.
Didn’t the Tyrell-Lannister forces arrive on the south bank of the Blackwater to attack Stannis’ army?? Most of Stannis troops hadn’t made it across the Blackwater as his naval troops seemed to be doing the heavy lifting during the battle.
@@Jaabra So it's based on the books? I had problem with Loras - heir of House Tyrell. If it's based on books Willas is the heir and Loras is just some 3rd son.
@@Sireas93 well, I ment the battle. If there is a fault in Loras not being the heir. Ask Kings and generals if they have made a mistake. Only he can awnser that.
@@Sireas93 I think they made a mistake because later they say that Garlan Tyrell led the vangaurd in Renly's armor which that means that they are using book cannon (because Garlan doesn't exist in the show). But if that's the case than Loras can't be the heir as Garlan and Willas are his older brothers. So... It was probably a mistake.
I have read and re-read ASOIAF but never have i ever grasped the full picture that was the blackwater like this. Infact, without youtube videos from people like you and more storyline centred videos like The Order of the Greenhand, Preston Jacobs, Gray Area etc, i think it would never have mattered how many times i reread ASOIAF LOL. This brilliance is awesome.
In the books Tyrion used a chain to block the channel and keep Stannis' boats from escaping, which in turn was the reason why the ships ended up forming a bridge, in the show that bridge didn't form. Book version is much superior to the show version.
They only sent one of the Redwyne twins to the Tyrells and kept the others as a hostage. Also in the books Loras has two older brothers. Otherwise great video.
@@allancg1022 I think this was before Balon Swann became a KG; it was his heroics in this battle fighting alongside Renly's former men who joined Tywin that earned him his white cloak. - - CORRECTION: he's picked after the riot, but before the Blackwater. So I'm wrong here, sorry about that. The Kingsguard in this Battle were Mandon Moore, Balon Swann, and Sandor. Meryn Trant and Osmund Kettleblack are inside the Red Keep with Joffrey, when he's trebucheting antler men over the walls, and Arys Oakheart is already in Dorne with Myrcella. damn, and I just spent a good 5 minutes trying to remember the 7th and where he was, only to realize it was Jamie (duh) sitting in a dungeon at Riverrun.
We’re lucky we got any battles in the show. They skipped a bunch of them for budget I can only imagine. Shame though stuff like this makes the people behind the battles seem like they fought a few before.
Regardless of the final season(s) this is still one of the best shows in television history! They rode the coattails of phenomenal riding but still mostly succeeded at converting to film.
@@starcusmcr3964 It's confirmed that the burning came directly from George, so we can expect to see it happen in the books as well. The circumstances that lead to it will probably be different, but Stannis is already in an increasingly desperate situation in the Winds previews chapters, so he'll likely be talked into doing it to save his army much like in the show.
In the books he insists Shireen be crowned if he ever dies, cos she's the future of the house. If he does end up burning her in the books, it's going to require a massive change for his character. It won't just be to clear up somehow winter weather (that's somehow not been a problem at all in season 6, 7 or 8).
Judicial78 I think that's the big point of Stannis's character. He's someone who would actually be a good ruler, but fails to actually become ruler in the first place because of fatal personality flaws that keep his number of supporters relatively low.
@@tancreddehauteville9983 BS. Given that both Willas and Garlan had excuses built-in to their storylines for why they wouldn't appear (Willas has a bad leg and doesn't travel, while Garlan was sent to lay siege to House Florent over 1000 miles from King's Landing), all they had to do was throw in a few lines explaining this, thus justifying why they didn't appear through at least Season 5 while leaving open the possibility of introducing them later if needed.
Another: it is not certain that Cersei sent Mandon to kill Tyrion. It's actually more likely that it was littlefinger, but nobody knows, except Martin.
pretty much:)) although, the number of defenders(~7000) and their composition leans more towards the 1453 siege, as also does the wounding of a very important commander in a sally ( Giovanni Giustiniani in case of the 1453 siege), Tyrion in the books and series of course in real life the defenders lost that siege, whereas in Asoiaf they won
@@ssa3101 I know what he's talking about:))))) I just pointed out that even if the 717 one was probably more similar to this, others have some similarities too. G.R.R.Marin does this a lot, taking inspiration from events in history , so I bet there are other details in the siege of Kings Landing that resemble events in real life.
@@damianmares5338 For the defenders yes but the numbers of attackers are much closer to the 717 siege than the 1453. Same goes for the efficiency of the wildfire, and for the arrival of reinforcements.
It's crazy how just a little bit of better diplomacy could easily have assured victory for Stannis, Renly, and Robb. Robb's father died defending Stannis's claim to the throne. If Robb realized this, he could have been content being Warden in the North under Stannis as King, just like his father was for Robert. Renly is the next in line the throne after Stannis because Stannis has no sons, not for lack of trying. If Renly realized this and was patient, he could have helped his older brother and just become king later in life. And then both Barratheon armies working together with the Starks and Tullies could easily have overwhelmed the Lannisters. It seems like it's Stannis's fate to get perpetually screwed over by people who should be allies not being satisfied with arrangements that are still very much in their favor. It happens again later with Jon. Jon has the chance to make a beautiful wildling princess his wife and get turned into Jon Stark, Warden of of the North if he helped Stannis, but the dumb vows to weirwood trees mattered to him more.
2:28 “she saw two futures”. In one he wins and in another he loses. 😂 LOL yeah no shit. In a fight you could WIN or LOSE. Great info Melisandre, top notch!
They mixed up the book and the show, in the show Loras is the heir and he has no brothers, while in the books he is the younger brother of Willas and Garlan.
I'm desperately waiting for a video on The Battle of Winterfell. The fact that the whole cavalry was used to charge at an enemy which was not going to lose morale or break ranks, because it was the undead, was just abysmally stupid. They were better suited for harassment, reconnaissance, logistics and communications. The Dothraki and the Unsullied were sacrificed for convenience and saving money and time. Then, the position of the infantry outside the walls, the absence of any trenches, a poor use of two dragons, no use of missile infantry, little to no force stationed on the walls and a pathetic line of stakes that was apparently mean to be a barrier, these factors prove that the battle or defence if you can call it that was planned by idiots. If their objective was to draw out the Night King, why not use Bran as the centre of communications and command, as well as for reconnaissance? The fact that they killed the Night King was due to sheer luck and poor writing, it was not an outcome of good planning or strategy. And I can write an essay about the show's pathetic writing.
I agree it was definitely a poorly thought out battle and a bit disappointing. One thing I’m not as bothered about as other people are is the Dothraki charging though, in the show and book lore Dothraki are famous for being unbeaten on open ground, also Dothraki don’t fight skirmish tactics they are only loosely based around the huns and tribes of the steppe but don’t fight like them. One example in the books is when they charged something like 3k unsullied spears head on over and over again and totalled up something like 20k losses, because they valued strength above all else and would rather die than lose in an even contest. So I think it’s very reasonable that these people who have the strongest cavalry in the known world, weapons tipped with dragon glass and also ablaze that they would think they would make a sizeable dent on to the dead army, no ones ever fought the dead before they didn’t know. My problem is that they didn’t make a dent ! They should have ploughed straight through the dead. Rest of their tactics I agree with you were dog shit
The Battle of the blackwater in the show was great. But in the books it is absolutely fantastic and truly shows just how smart and capable Tyrion is with how he rallies troops and his overall strategy. Keep in mind he isn't a military general either so this is some impressive shit. Good one Tyrion.
It's even weirder since Garlan Tyrell is mentioned near the end. So it is based at least somewhat on the books since Garlan (and Willas) do not exist in the TV series.
Considering the numbers involved it certainly seems closer to the books than the show. Then again the show did keep up with the books to a great extent with this battle, but they couldn't get the scale right.
You should do the Battle of the Long Night with the brilliantly planned out suicide charge of the Dothraki and the genius "trebuchets on the frontline" strategy.
7:20 Qyburn not only mastered teleportation/jetpacks in later seasons, he also discovered time travel so as to plant scorpions on the walls before he even reached kings landing invented them!

In the first book, Eddard and his sons found an omen in the form of direwolf choked by a buck's antler. The more appropiate omen should have been direwolf choked to death eating fish.
@@GomezSuper11 Because is was Catelyn Tully's bad decisions that led to Ned's death. Tywin is the perpetual perfect choice for the second-in-command of an empire, as the way the man schemes almost always improves the stability and health of the seven kingdoms at large, even if it may be worse for his enemies on an individual level. Additionally he can be trusted to always support that which benefits his house the most in the long-term, and this consistency makes him easy to work with and around. Tywin does not rebel until he can be certain that the emperor has lost. Tyrion takes after his father, and will likely prove an equally skilled player once he achieves the level of experience his father managed before his irrational hatred of his son brought him down.
The One True King is coming for them all and will not stop until the land is scoured clean of abomination. The Baratheon words are "Ours is the Fury" Stannis will show the pretenders Fury Burns
As the smoke cleared, more Baratheon men emerged on top of the hill. In the front line, was Ser Clayton Suggs, holding a pike. On the blade of the pike, was the head of The Bastard of Bolton. The vanguard of the Baratheon Army was led by The Bastard of Eddard Stark, who drew Longclaw. He led a fierce charge down the hill, ripping through the Frey van. As intense fighting ensued, Ser Godry Farring and Richard Horpe both led two halves and crashed into the Lannister flanks. On the hilltop, was King Stannis Baratheon at the head of 500 cavalry. As Jon's center started to open up, Stannis' knights charged through the Frey lines and straight through the Lannister center. Within 5 minutes, the whole army collapsed. Every Frey and Lannister man captured was drowned in the river as retaliation for the massacre of Northmen at The Battle of The Green Fork two years prior. The Twins were burned and the food was added to Stannis' baggage train.
Tyrion held Stannis’ armies long enough that Tywin’s incoming force would crush the majority of Stannis’ army. It’s hard to say who did the most in that battle. On one hand, Tywin just had to move and charge at Stannis’ huge army from the back, hoping that Tyrion bought them enough time. While Tyrion bought time, burning like half of the Stannis fleet and led assaults himself. But also killing most of his defenders and burned all of his fleet down as well.
Stannis' army was, sadly, not so huge. He had about 20,000 men, roughly what Robb had. The combined Lannister - Tyrell army had 80,000, not counting the defenders in the city. The reason for this is that Renly went to confront Stannis with only a portion of his army, the majority of which Stannis converted, but Stannis never got to convert the rest of Renly's massive army because the Tyrells made sure to disband it and send it on their way before he could do so. Basically whoever secured the Tyrells' aid was gonna win, but Stannis had no time for politics, he had to use his army or lose it - those men were eager to attack King's Landing, and waiting would've conferred no advantage. Tyrion definitely did the most work with the least amount of resources, then almost gets murdered by his own during the battle and gets no thanks for his effort. Whether Stannis would've had enough time to breach the city and the Red Keep to make his victory complete had the outer walls fallen sooner is unclear. It's very likely the deal between Tyrells and Lannisters wouldn't stand if all of the Lannisters ('Baratheons') in King's Landing were dead though.
Thank you for doing these videos :) I'm doing my first read through the series and I have a hard time digesting all of the action sequences, so I love watching your videos once I'm done reading the battle to help me visualize everything.
Compare the level of writing in this battle with how High Garden was captured by the Lannisters in Season 7 with no explanation besides some excuse about their soldiers not being fighters and their sigil being a flower.
7:16 hill clans, not mountain clans. The mountain clans are sworn to the north and live in NW Westeros. The Hill Clans (like the Dead Crows and the Burnt Men) are from the Vale.
One weird thing in the books is that Stannis is a good commander, Davos is sensible too, and then nearly everyone else in his army in high positions of command appears to be foolish. Imry Florent to name one, but a couple of others as well. It's weird because realistically the Baratheons would have to have had the most experienced commanders and soldiers, since they did the most work during Robert's Rebellion and Balon's Rebellion. It's somewhat unconvincing that Stannis wouldn't have better lieutenants surrounding him.

heck, scarp that, I think with all the people in power at that particular time, the lannisters were certain to win the second tywin beat roose bolton. tyrion and doran silenced dorne, baelish the vale, renly and melisandre wrecked stannis` chance to claim the throne and created the tyrell-lannister alliance, and balon, theon and roose made sure robb was doomed in the long run. some things just aren`t meant to be sadly.

One of my least favorite parts of the books. As the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, Edmure is one of Robb’s most important bannermen.

Are you basing the events on the books or show because in the books Loras isn't the heir to the reach
It's even weirder since Garlan Tyrell is mentioned near the end. So it is based at least somewhat on the books since Garlan (and Willas) do not exist in the TV series.
pretty sure hes basing it off the books because of the chain and whatnot
Considering the numbers involved it certainly seems closer to the books than the show. Then again the show did keep up with the books to a great extent with this battle, but they couldn't get the scale right.
This is definteively based on the books, in the show there is no fighting between the Kings landing fleet and Stannis’s.

Stannis the true king
It's very likely the deal between Tyrells and Lannisters wouldn't stand if all of the Lannisters ('Baratheons') in King's Landing were dead though.
we didn't really get the whole picture of this battle when it came to the show that's for sure!
I feel like in the show Stannis shouldn’t have died how he did, he’s was way to smart to charge winterfell like that.

A paradox is when your favourite YT channel does videos about your less favourite tv show
I'm really glad you based this series on the books and not on the tv show.
Correction, Loras was not the heir of house Tyrell. He was third in line behind Willas and Garlan.
Thank you for doing these videos :) I'm doing my first read through the series and I have a hard time digesting all of the action sequences, so I love watching your videos once I'm done reading the battle to help me visualize everything.
What I'm doing as well, after am done reading... I check the explanation to get the full view of the action
I long for the day when this glorious channel makes a video on how Stannis conquers the north. Wow needs to come out soon.
The best night battle on GOT. This time i can see the real battle.
It looks so much better here than in the series
Compare the level of writing in this battle with how High Garden was captured by the Lannisters in Season 7 with no explanation besides some excuse about their soldiers not being fighters and their sigil being a flower.
Reachmen are actually far better Knights than westerlanders and can gather twice as big of an army.
@@aleksandersokal5279 More than twice.
I always thought the Reach was caught by complete surprise and that there was no army formed to oppose the Lannisters
@@serbanandreimarin Some of the lords of The Reach joined The Lannisters but still, House Tyrell has 50,000 soldiers. That was half of Renly's army.
@@aleksandersokal5279 Feudalism doesn't even exist in the TV show. It's 7 absolute monarchies with standing armies and matching uniforms.
If anyone is wondering, this is based on the book version of events. That's why there are references to Garlan Tyrell
At least Ser Davos made it. Davos for Westeros president, 2019.
Your quality on your videos is always higher and higher.. Sky is the limit, keep it up lads!!
Thank you for using the book as a source and not the show
7:16 hill clans, not mountain clans. The mountain clans are sworn to the north and live in NW Westeros. The Hill Clans (like the Dead Crows and the Burnt Men) are from the Vale.
Loras is NOT the heir to Highgarden; Willas is.
