I made lavender infused vodka with fresh lavender flower heads (10-12 of 'Provence' in 750 ml) and let it steep for about a week in a dark cupboard, then strained and refrigerated it. It is delicious with the syrup I made from boiling down fresh berries, topped off with some sparkling water. It seems to just get better and better in the frig.
I did the same thing a few weeks later with air-dried lavender heads from the same harvest and the flavor is much stronger and unpleasantly astringent/medicinal, not the lovely floral flavor I got from using fresh. I can't believe how different the 2 infusions are using the same amounts of lavender and alcohol and the same process. You recommended a much larger amount of dried lavender and a much longer steep. Thinking maybe I strained too soon and missed a mellowing effect, I did another batch and have let it steep for 1 month and it's even stronger and harsher tasting.
Any insight or advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Being able to only make it once a year from fresh flowers and having to store a year's worth in the frig/freezer isn't practical for me. I need the space for food!! Thanks.
If you use dried lavender, there should be no need to store it in the fridge. With the fresh lavender (small amounts) I probably wouldn’t bother refrigerating but apparently that’s not recommended.
Lovely tip at the end there! Must, and will experiment, as we have a lavender hedge here in our northwest English country garden. I find it to be a delight, but it gets woody and must be replaced every few years. Nothing but rain here atm (unlike yourselves, alas.) I do hope you aren't being badly affected by the current freak weather out there. x

I'm wanting to add lavender to my kombucha tea. Have you done this? I am trying to figure out the ratio of lavender say to a 64 oz bottle or individual 16 oz bottles. Any help will be greatly appreciate?
Just a thought for you Amanda, don't compost the soaked lavender, strain it and make lavender/vodka muffins...but don't drive afterwards! I make lots of different flavoured vodkas and gins as Christmas presents and always use the soaked fruit for muffins, topping for ice cream, pavlovas. I'm sure you'll think of other uses, have good days from England.

Planting a hillside of lavender, a lady of my own heart. Tell that little boy, now 6 yrs older, that you never grow out of wanting to wear pyjama pants.
I received a cutting from a friend. Had to remove some of the leaves and two flowers to start propagation and don't know what to do with them. Any ideas? It's just leaves but I don't want to waste them.
I Stil have to cut my lavender but I wnt get more out of my plant so going to try propagation so wish me luck

Hi Amanda, How do I prevent my lavender buds from turning moldy? I'm guessing an air tight jar would be an essential? What about if the flowers aren't dried enough when I took them off their stems? They look dry but I'm not sure if they are dry enough. I had one small batch of lavender buds turn moldy & weird when I kept them in a small tupperware-like container. I'm so worried now that after taking the buds off, I've put them on a tray-like container and I'm airing them a bit more but I'm not sure if I should be doing this. PLEASE HELP! And even if airing them is fine - for how long should I do this? I just don't want to waste this batch of lavender buds and have them turn moldy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I would APPRECIATE ANY HELP AND ADVICE. Thank you in advance.
You've probably figured it out by now but air flow is essential to anything drying out, you can use this rule of thumb for anything. More air flow equals faster drying, temperature also affects drying time. If you had mold and it was in an air tight container than moisture was present, either your buds weren't dried all the way or in some way moisture made its way into the equation.
I bought dry lavender from the market and the buds arent purple they are grey/green is it normal ?
I'm growing lavender now to dry.

I love listening to you and am grateful for the great tip. I mean this next comment as entirely hopefully helpful. Sadly, the music was uncomfortably tiring and distracting to me. I'd so rather just hear you. I'm not sure why in our society music covers everyone's voices so we have to work hard to just hear each other. You have a soothing voice.
Some people just love noise pollution & they can't get enough of it. They've got no respect for nature or other people - everything has to be destroyed by adding sound.
Or smoke it?

It wasn't necessary. It was totally inconsiderate & a selfish, stupid thing to do. Unfortunately, a lot of people think noise pollution is something that should be encouraged.
@@daveenglish2 I make similar comments on a lot of videos I try to learn from. The subtitles are often misleading, and are awkward when trying to watch a vid as well. Many serious subjects belittle their content with background racket. I think I will start calling it noise pollution as well, music it certainly isn't. Thanks for your response.
