- Nelson Sullivan's brother Marko also lived in New York, in a swankier part of the city. On this beautiful day in April of 1989, Marko came downtown where he and artist Tom Lohre met Nelson for a snack and a walk around. Video by Nelson Sullivan
this guy was way before his time...he was vlogging and is now being seen on RUclips which never existed back then...amazzing bits of history...so glad he made these

"do you know what time it is?" I've never heard that anymore.
Mer Dali i don’t even think anyone has asked me that before to be completely honest... everyone has phones now
I said that often in those days when I was out.
Yeah its hella rare
maybe in US but in Europe where I live now sometimes someone asks me what time is it and in Asia where I used to live are the same with Europe...
That hit me when he said that! I was like “wow when was the last time I asked someone or some asked me what the time was.”
today would have been Nelsons 70th Birthday R.I.P Nelson your missed

This is tired, grumpy Nelson trying to escape his annoying brother and projecting childhood PTSD on to his friends via passive aggressive answering machine messages. love it.
This is as real as it gets to see how it was in 1989. Watching commercials or tv shows from that time doesn’t give a true feel like this video does. This is very similar to todays life maybe just without certain technology. Very thankful to be alive to grab a coffee at a cafe in New York like Nelson is doing. RIP to the legend.
I disagree, Nelson’s brother took the time to visit just to be recorded, he was clearly uncomfortable.
@@DanJones-gw7fb well he should know his brother recrords everything..so that’s his problem if he did.
“Well as usual I’m way out in front and everybody else is catching up with me.” Absolutely prophetic words!
This entire collection of videos should be admitted to the Library of Congress. This is great historically significant footage!
New York University is now in possession of Nelson's video collection for its archives.

I agree
I love how he has all his friends phone numbers memorized. I still remember all the phone numbers of my childhood. This bit was very nostalgic!
We all knew our friends numbers from memory back in those days.
It was easy back in the days
Heather Y I still do have them memorized.
I still remember a fair few. Born n 81'. Still know my friends numbers from middle school
I did before cell phones. You had to dial them so many times. You sure knew the important ones in case you were in an emergency without your phone book.
He says he is at "Sixties" early in the vid...That would be "'Sixties on 6th" at A and 6th, the original name of Sidewalk Cafe....I can't watch these clips...they make me too sad....I was maybe 21 when this was made, and I lived in the Alphabets and remember Nelson, he was adorable.....I remember Clayton (Patterson) well too, whose studio was at Stanton and Essex, I owned one of his caps....It is so hard to wrap my mind around the fact that this was 30 years ago! It all makes me so very sad....
You knew Nelson personally? Don't be sad, be stoked that you were there. I'm stoked that you are here. I was born 10 years too late, and had to go through the '80s as a child! It really bums be out, as I knew I was going to be very late to the party. The '90s were...not the '80s!
I used to live on 7th between A and 1st Ave... but starting in '96. I don't remember that spot. But that cat sign looks familiar. So SO different these days. It's PACKED with people bar hopping. Last time I went over there was almost a decade ago. Great memories.
I know how you feel. ❤🙏🥺

Go ahead and say “Us” Nelson because little did you know that you’d eventually be hanging out with over 24,000 people. I doubt there’s many people who stopped at just one of his videos. I love this guy!
Tracy Tondro Also we are so used to instant gratification these days. Recording videos and then posting them and seeing all the “likes” and comments. Or Posting what we do on Snapchat and in a second everyone sees it. It’s amazing to me that he kept this up for years without giving up and thinking wtf am I doing this anyway? No one ever really saw those tapes I’m assuming except for maybe when he made them for the friends that were in the video. But, then again that was enough reason to do it in those days.
Agree!
I know you posted this 4 years ago, but indeed, who could possibly watch just one Nelson video
It's very true, you watch Nelson's videos and how he films , talks and uses the camera is SO modern, PEOPLE were NOT using cameras like this at this time. If you weren't told, you could watch this and NOT see any distinction between his style and bloggers of the 2000s. Incredible.

He probably didn't mean for that to sound so prophetic, but pretty darn accurate.
Drew Katchen strangely there are a lot of prophetic things he says in these videos.

Nelson was so annoyed this video. He mentioned his brother bullied him a lot when he was a kid, they must have a complicated relationship. It’s interesting they still tried to see each other though.

……isn’t he AMAZING!!! I see your post was 5 years ago so I’m very late, I just met Nelson like 3 weeks ago!!! But ever since I can’t stay away from him!!! I’ve watched at the least 2 videos every day! It’s like I can’t stop watching! There was something very magical about Nelson. Out of all the characters you meet through his videos, none capture me like he does. And he’s the most “normal”…..you’d think the real flamboyant, loud, drunk, high, or even Ru Paul would be at the top of the list of peop who make you come back and watch but not at all……It’s all Nelson!! Thank you Nelson for real entertainment! Real “Reality t.v.” With out the added scripts and story lines to get more ratings and views! This was real raw and uncut and by far THE MOST entertaining thing for me to watch rather than fb, IG, real house wives, Drag race etc…..not saying they should, but his family could capitalize off this and make a series that would sure be a hit today. O could see graphic tees and all sorts of “Nelson” paraphernalia! I would definitely represent!!

Hello from the future!!!!
He's(Nelson) not having a bad day or in a bad mood. He's just busting balls because... that's his brother. A brother that is on the other end of the spectrum personality wise. That's just how some siblings are. They remind me of me and my brother so much here.
I love how straight forward Nelson is
is it me or does any one else think about what the other people are doin now with there life in the back ground/dead or old ahh
Me too
Everyone is out there in some way or another. I think that when I look at holiday photos from the 1980's I think I wander what they're doing now. Are they alive or dead
Yes
They dont exist, technically everything outside the range of your senses doesn't exist.
I was alive then, 10 years old in 1989 but I lived in Philadelphia. It's summer so I was probably outside riding my 10 speed bike with my friends. Getting ice cream from the ice cream truck. So, now I'm home with 3 kids, married and watching these videos on RUclips. I'm 40 now.
R.I.P Nelson Sullivan I'm in love with your videos brother

А что с ним случилось?
Nelson was in a particular mood in this video
I think there was certainly some bad blood between his brother and him.
@@idylledoll From what I've read, the Brother was more of an introverted individual who apparently had a serious problem with Alcohol. Nelson is more extroverted and dabbled with ecstasy and Hemp but not to a degree where it became an issue. Someone pointed out that Nelson may have been displaying PTSD symptoms passive aggressively/just having a bad day. I don't think the Brother was supportive of Nelson when they were growing up and its obvious that the two did not get on, its more than just a personality clash. It's very hard to warm to Marco in this Video, there's just no bond between the two, no warmth and Tom Lori being there with them may have eased tensions. It's actually quite sad to see. Marco passed away in 2017. Tom Lori is still very much alive and painting, his Artwork is still available to purchase online.
@@digitalsoldier3894 Wow, thank you for all the information, good to know. At least Nelson had some great people around him and enjoyed his life.
@@idylledoll Nelson's posthumous success which he quit his job to achieve just 2 days before his death, is manifesting itself to a new form that would bring satisfaction to all those who knew and are fascinated/only learning about Nelson. There is new documentaries on RUclips about his life, a close friend published a 70 page biography about his years knowing Nelson (the Portapak Prince, on Amazon), Nelson's image appeared on the cover poster of a LGBTQ community documentary on Netflix, featuring compilations of his tapes. People have been visiting Nelson/his family's graves in Kershaw Cemetery alot more and have been taking good care of the grass and gravestones, even leaving flowers...the graves were neglected and bare for years, i think it's because alot of Nelson's friends and family don't visit/have passed on also. There is also currently talks of there being a Motion Picture version of Nelson, it should absolutely be a coen Brothers picture, people have been saying that Adrian Brodie would play Nelson well :)
He was the first Vlogger, vlogging 31 years before everyone else since May 1983. Alot of his quotes are prophetical and eerie because of the later relevance behind them. Its even said that the character of Bruce from Family Guy is Based on Nelson, you can understand why when you watch the video of nelson at the Payphone in the Airport when his Delta Flight is delayed... His appearance and even the moment he says, "oh noo" are identical to the character so it does make one wonder.
I have also read that Andy Warhol used to frequent Nelson's later home, fifth ninth avenue, back in the 1960s, I believe that this was before Nelson bought the house but I could be wrong as there is footage of Nelson and Andy Warhol in 1986, close up footage that suggest they may have also known each other for years which is another incredible little known fact. In the end, despite his sudden death on his favourite holiday from a genetic heart defect which killed his Grandfather at the same age, he achieved his perfectly documented 735 Episodes of Cable TV on RUclips for everyone to watch at anytime for free. Whatever way you look at it, his dream came true and we are all better people to have the spirit of Nelson within our lives 💕

What a weird lunch. Nelson and his brother never even look at each other. The brother doesn't say a word and Nelson is just gazing into his electronic device. This seems more like a lunch date in 2017 than the 80s.
It's a brothers thing. Brothers that are as different as can be but want to hang out now and then thing. I'm the same age as Nelson was in this video and my only brother is 2 years younger and like the Sullivans, we are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to personality and social circles. A genuine wonderful and interesting person. Thanks Nelson. You'll never be forgotten.
People are looking too deep into his relationships with his brother. I can understand why people may think they may have not gotten a long but Look at his brother giving a slight smile to the camera . 1. Nelson was gay in a era where gays are hated 2. You can tell he loves his brother by that small little interaction . . Idk why Nelson but I found your channel and and I love it . May you rest in piece .
I have watched all of these videos and agree that Nelson was a pioneer. I so long to go back to growing up in the 80s, thing's to me seemed so much better. Today we depend on cell phones and computers to talk to people, when I grew up we used to walk to either our friends house or the hang out place. Why am I nostalgic for a time I never experienced, this was 10 years before I was born but I really feel like this is my era.
It's because you're miserable in your own time and understand on a subconscious level the very fabric of our society and social structure has been dying and is almost completely gone and watching one of the very last periods before things went to shit feels natural and makes us yearn for it.
Yes. I was born in 92. Yet I miss this time. A time I didn’t even exist yet. What id do to shift to an alternative reality where everything is exactly the way it were in the 80s
Proof of reincarnation
Ahhh, the days where we asked each other what time of day it was.
1989 was a good year .good times
I love you Nelson. RIP.
Ahhh, we’re related! His brother married into my family!!! I didn’t even know that until I saw his obituary - I’m completely blown away. SC is very small but I never expected this....

When are you gonna learn to be confrontational and not such a wimp! Lol gotta love Nelson
Yeah pretty funny. It looked like the people took his brother's chair so their dog could sit on it.
Nelson was AHEAD of his time not before! Lovely videos.

ozlekosusturu It was actually already The Sidewalk Cafe at this time when Nelson was there. Opened in mid 80s. It just closed in 2019, unfortunately.
