The Vintage Shop that Captured New York City's Spirit | The New Yorker Documentary
“The best thing was, we let life happen, we didn’t have a plan. And look at the outcome.” ❤️✨ what an amazing perspective
What made NYC so special and unique is now gone, replaced by sterile, generic shops that you can find in any other city
yup. all across NYC. I think a LOT of this happened when Mike Bloomberg was Mayor....kissed landlord's butts...thought it was a way yo create positive change...but now...so many FRANCHISES...souless GAPs, Starbuck's hat have noting to do with anything unique about my city. You still see a store...a restaurant/bar here and there....bu almost always....the bsiness owns the property...no leases. (sigh)
I think with covid, we are going to see New York regian it’s soul. Lots of rent dropping and creavity, special places moving in
@@amazingabby25 I hope so!
True
Live outside of the city now.... my friend & I walked thru the village 2018
So sad the whole area is ‘soulless’. A lot of out of town NYU students walking around. All the unique shops & restaurants gone. So so sad 😢
This is extraordinary! Pls keep documenting the fading old-world of NYC.
Haha he did say good luck!!
I thought that too! Lol
Yeah, but not like a New Yorker. :)
The way they both laughed at the end was a glimpse of their relationship during their lifetime. They truly make each other happy. That's lovs
If New York was a person it would be Suzi
Her accent and attitude is everything! 😊
No truer words have been said
Obsessed
Whosethat?🤩🤩😂🤣😂
She reminds me of my mother. Always dancing
Why don't they have a youtube channel? Someone get on that.
I’m watching their old show clips in the meantime 📺
So where r they now..
I would watch it!
They made my day lol ....They need a reality show. I MISS OLD NEW YORK
I was shocked to see Pearl Paint was gone. That was my haunt as an art student at music and art highschool. Chinatown, the Village all being taken over by luxury condos and Starbucks.
Me too! Pearl Paint was my first stop when in New York. Only place to get things totally unavailable elsewhere. The slanted wood floors, the endless stairs and staff with knowledge. Not the same ordering on the internet. Another experience younger kids will miss out on.
I used to love to visit that huge Pearl when I would come to visit the city!! And then finally getting to move here, I find out it's closed down. Utterly heartbroken, felt like I'd missed an era of the city I'll never get back.
I loved shopping in their store. Such great people. I hope the rest of their lives are just as fun
this was an awesome send off. what absolute legends. RIP Pearl Paint
I could cry. No further comment is necessary.
Allan & Suzi are & always will be NYC icons💙 I shopped there as often as I could back in the 90s... Love y'all!!!
New York is still my all time favorite city, but it is sad to see all these great little shops disappear. All the comic book stores, record shops, and vintage stores are being pushed out.
That's sad to know. That's the reason why i dream to travel to new York, but it's not happening soon.
Love them cracking up at the end!🤣😂🤣🤣🇨🇦
This was sad, i remember the old NY with Tower Records, Unique Boutique, Patricia Fields but where her original store was. Poster Mate. Thats when NY qas great. I miss those days.
OMG! Unique Boutique and Tower Records on Broadway. Poster Mat on West 8th Street.
Other Music.
Love Saves the Day
Me too! I was a club kid!
Remember Postermat?
Thank you for this piece, it grabs that hole era so well. Oh I miss Antique Boutique, Danceteria, Unique, Steven Sprouse, Roxy!
Exactly. NYC was a magical playground when I was growing up in the 80s&90s- Ghouliani then Bloomberg ripped it's guts out. Hopefully it will come back around with the rents dropping.
Palladium...
Suzi reminds me of the mother in the tv series "The Nanny".....what a New York accent 😁
This is a great piece @TheNewYorker. ❤
This was an amazing watch. The feelings it gives me.

Oh! Don’t New Yorkers just looove to kvetch. The guy had just wished him good luck but to Allan that reality never happened.
alex fradu I thought the same thing. 🙄 After all, he did come with the intent to buy something. People! ✌🏽
@@oceanlover1318 People! They're the worst.
alex fradu Just the ones that refuse to examine themselves (like this guy).✌🏽🌺
😆
@ ...I remember very well the store Screaming Mimi's....Cyndi LAuper used to shop there...and there were several LARGE stores in the VIllage....on Broadway....above the area where the TOwer Records on West 4th used to b...had entire floor of men's old-style trenchcoats...bowling shirts etc...and the women's shop had some stuff...not as unique as Allan and Suzi's merchandise. bu the "zeigteist" for vintage....for old cloting form the 40s and 50s was there...earlier 80s. They opened in 1989/89.
Manhattan is now essentially made up of Transplants who don't mind paying $5000 for a tiny Studio as long as it's in the "right neighborhood". Areas that used to be a cool, cheap place to hang out is now gentrified and has a Starbucks on every other block. It's depressing seeing NYC evolve into this. =(
You sound super ignorant. Learn b4 you preach. Live b4 you reach THAT far. #BNR
@@courtneymoran3759 So what part of what I said was “ignorant” to you? Enlighten me because you choosing to spell the word “before” as “b4” is not exactly helping your cause.
Yep. That’s why I’m leaving as soon as I can. Charlotte, NC is the new hot spot baby.
More than anything I want someone to make laugh, a good friend and lover.
I had this on my list of places to go for years! I’ve still not made it to New York yet. Very sad to see them go!
The young man did say good luck.
I wish this was a longer documentary but it was cool!
Sad for Allan & Suzi, New York just isn't affordable on any level. Hope they find a new space or something fun to do ..........
They will. Rents are finally dropping, the heart of the city is returning
I went to their shop in 2004 and he treated me like garbage but had a blast with them roasting my outfit.
Sorry for your loss NYC.
PS: I cried like a baby when the CBGBs and Kim's Video closed...
That, was trully tragic!
I'm a NY hardcore kid from the 80s..I feel the same.
Hours and hours spent at Kim’s......
I get the feeling that they probably treated most people, who weren't in their circle, like garbage. It's the old school NYC way. lol
I miss the old NYC and I miss them.
NY has become a city for rich boring poeple. So sad to see what hab made NY so unique desiapearing like that.... This space will have now a beautiful Starbuck instead. sad.
Or a Popeyes
SF the same
capitalism destroys everything!
And San Francisco, too. It’s nauseating!
People have become greedy robots. Makes me want to throw up!
@@faithnelson2013 yes, faith. My landlord just DOUBLED my rent over night. It makes me SO SICK. How tragic that magical SF has died. It breaks my heart into a million pieces.
The last line followed by the laughter captured what made the shop and old timey NYC so great. "Look at us." Allan and Suzi did not give a hoot about what anyone else thought about them. They did their own thing, with an eye towards making money so they could keep on doing it, and it was fabulous for everyone that visited their store. If everybody is concerned about what others think of them you get conformity and the boring BS that NYC is becoming. A store like this is impossible without a free market by the way. Government regulations hurt small businesses like this most because it costs money to meet the standards and they have less than huge corporations.
you could not miss them around town. i saw them everywhere.
The documentary is fabulous. Great characters with great stories. Shame about their greedy landlord.
Omg great to see you guys are doing well I remember you folks when you had the corner store at 80th & Amsterdam I always hung out in front of ya store and drove you nuts
Incredible piece of New York City history! Great video - just so sad to see such a staple be gone. Hope they can find a new location (or move to Chicago lol)
What a sweet couple. I wish them good health and happiness.
What a joy they are.thank you. Wishing them all the best....great laughs too.
Oh my god when he took his glasses off i about fell outta my chair lmao
Was a student in NY State, once walked into a "gallery" store in Skaneateles managed by a New York accent lady just like Suzi. Had a great talk about everything, particularly with her imagination of a renaissance form below along the Erie Canal. Sadly I can't afford an item in her store, but she still invite me to stop by for a chat. Missed the days in NY
This NEEDS to be an episode of “Documentary Now!”
With Ben Schwartz & Jenny Slate or Kate Berlant & John Early
The vintage shops of nyc are the crown jew of fashion in the world
"The crown Jew"
THIS IS THE BEST THING ON RUclips
I remember watching their show every Monday night to see Ant'nee (how they pronounced his name) model the clothes. I was heavy into the club scene back in the day. Another NYC treasure gone, sadly.
Love & Miss them soooooo much!!!
They are quintessential New York.
So CUTE! I love the ending! Hip beyond hip SO NEW YORK WHAT I LOVE(ED) about it here. My era! 😍
What an interesting couple! So sad about their shop. Hopefully they’ll reopen‼️
Eccentrics are essential and make life more vibrant/ interesting 😎 They would fit right in an episode of Bob’s 🍔
NYC will never be the same as it was in the 80's and 90's.
at 10:18 the customer seems perfectly polite and they act like he just spit at them, lol, hopefully just poorly edited...
yeah, that was weird. left a bad aftertaste.
I think that was part of their gimmick/ shtick. That old tough as nails New York attitude. It can come across as abrasive and harsh, but hey that’s life in the big apple. Lol
I think they were depressed and bitter about their store closing.
Not unusual but definitely uncalled for. If they were real NYers they would’ve been just as honest to the guys face but again there was need because he wasn’t rude
Nah that’s what he’s like, it’s the charm
Trash and Vaudeville is closed,so sad 😞 I remember seeing shows at Coney Island High on St.Mark’s Place. Then heading over to Patricia Fields. 90’s were some good times in NYC. Never be the same.....
Trash and Vaudville is not closed. The New Yorker got that wrong. They simply moved. New address is: 96 E 7th St, New York, NY 10009
Same inventory, same brands, and even some same staff. The old Saint Marks is gone of course, only Search and Destroy remains.
Super fun and funky people! Glad there are some still around! What will the next chapter of life look like for them? Inquiring minds want to know!
They are delightful ,fun and lovely !!!
Been there, and at Asbury....the list of stuff closed at the end breaks my heart...
They are great I love it they can laugh like that . Good for you
true new yorkers , i used to watch robin bird all the time lol
Suzi dancing is everything
10:52-11:15 Love it
Where’s the current city that’s like NY in the 80s? I want to move there.
Lmk when you find it
You want to go to a town that hasnt been "Gentrified" yet. A town where chain stores havnt infiltrated! Sad to say, but towns that are too impoverished to change.
You have to kill SJW and PC culture first.
*Her accent. I **_love_** it!!*
Trash and Vaudeville isn't closed! They're still open I was in there the other day
I didn't want this to end. Are the owners going to retire? What's Anthony going to do? Loved the "vintage" footage.
I love everything vintage at 57 yrs.old. I wish I would have had the opportunity to be involved in your store but as a Texan it would have been impossible. Hope to hear more of your future life adventures! All my love, Traci
NYC IS THEM 🗽🗽🗽!!! ❤❤❤😂😂🤣😂🤣
They are a wonderful parody of themselves and ready for SNL!
We need people like this in California. Come on over!
too fake for new yorkers
Not even California has people like anymore. The world has changed.
@@rog809 new york has become too fake for new yorkers
Sad,these people are what we need, to be in business for year's and have to close so very sad,the lady is a hoot, very cool.
I check Trash and Vaudeville ig and is still open 😁 hopefully one day I will get to visit.
They seem to have lost all enthusiasm for the place and people
I kind of sensed that, too. Perhaps it was time for them to shuffle off and close.
I always wanted to go to NY, not for Broadway or all that other overblown tourist crap but for places like this, now it's all gone
Toronto's the same way
Rich people ruin everything
“Susan, sell the outfit”
amaze as always new yoekr
'She wants size 8 platforms'....'Who'?. (Suzi points)........'Yeah So?...Oh my god I couldn't stop laughing!!!.........I'm sorry I think these two are hilarious. I'd watch them all day. The world needs more people like them, Flamboyant, Couldn't care less and has no great desire to conform. Shame they have to close. I'd go visit them if I went over to New York for sure.
Superb couple!!! Je les aimen!!!
It was the first store I visited when I moved to nyc! So sad 😞
God bless them!!! they're a trip!!!
Reminds me of Granny's Cupboard!
He did say good luck!
Great video. So sad that all of these NYC institutions have closed their doors.
We need more of those kreative funny people, just make the world happy.
Her accent is EPIC. ❤🔥
omg i love it xx re open please.
This is great! Two people with a lot of character! and certainly had me laughing 😆 Just too bad they lost ther lease😔 They can’t be replaced 😣
I thought I was watching SNL.
Right 😂🤣😂
I wonder if they ever had the privilege of crossing paths with Nelson Sulliva. He was the famous videographer of the era and the world's first blogger...😊👍🏼😜☮️❗
I was wondering that too. There could be video footage of him in that store. ☺
Soverynice🤣😘🙏🤸♀️🤸♀️🤸♀️🤩
Love them!
I hate to think that one-day American cities will all be one big factory outlet mall where they sell nothing but clothes that pill after the first wash.
I wish they were my grandparents
No reason to visit New York again. Pearl Paint is gone, the delis (best pickles in the world) are vanishing, all the character is gone. No point anymore. London is going to the same way. Dead cities.
So sad I love New York thrift shops and this one is was so great
I wish them the best and I hope they can reopen
9:12 what is the name of this song?? It's killing me trying to find it
Sounds like Jackie DeShannon...maybe not. Scratch that. Sounds more like Mary Wells. Compare it to the song, The One Who Really Loves You
Love the authenticity, can learn so much 🙏😀
Uggggh. So New York!
Tax incentives make it more profitable for many big landlords to just leave spots empty. They get offers but our tax system has created most of this. Half the space in Hudson Yards is being held back the same way. Makes no sense.
And millions homeless...
pat fields was the place to shop back in the day
Hahahahahaha they're contagiously crazy love them but I don't feel bad for them they're complete twogether...they got each other for the long run! God bless them.
Ahhh what characters...we need more ‘originals’ on this planet
10:55 These people are the best. just look at this
