yup. all across NYC. I think a LOT of this happened when Mike Bloomberg was Mayor....kissed landlord's butts...thought it was a way yo create positive change...but now...so many FRANCHISES...souless GAPs, Starbuck's hat have noting to do with anything unique about my city. You still see a store...a restaurant/bar here and there....bu almost always....the bsiness owns the property...no leases. (sigh)

Manhattan is now essentially made up of Transplants who don't mind paying $5000 for a tiny Studio as long as it's in the "right neighborhood". Areas that used to be a cool, cheap place to hang out is now gentrified and has a Starbucks on every other block. It's depressing seeing NYC evolve into this. =(

The last line followed by the laughter captured what made the shop and old timey NYC so great. "Look at us." Allan and Suzi did not give a hoot about what anyone else thought about them. They did their own thing, with an eye towards making money so they could keep on doing it, and it was fabulous for everyone that visited their store. If everybody is concerned about what others think of them you get conformity and the boring BS that NYC is becoming. A store like this is impossible without a free market by the way. Government regulations hurt small businesses like this most because it costs money to meet the standards and they have less than huge corporations.

I hate to think that one-day American cities will all be one big factory outlet mall where they sell nothing but clothes that pill after the first wash.

No reason to visit New York again. Pearl Paint is gone, the delis (best pickles in the world) are vanishing, all the character is gone. No point anymore. London is going to the same way. Dead cities.

Sounds like Jackie DeShannon...maybe not. Scratch that. Sounds more like Mary Wells. Compare it to the song, The One Who Really Loves You

Tax incentives make it more profitable for many big landlords to just leave spots empty. They get offers but our tax system has created most of this. Half the space in Hudson Yards is being held back the same way. Makes no sense.
