So thankful the gallery owners did not cut down Nelson's vine, saved the front entrance as it was back when Nelson lived there, and kept the inside wood floors/window/door frames as it too. Thank you! And thank you ActionKid for taking us through his home.
3:06 dang they have his answering machine. I remember on his birthday video when he came home alone after being out all day and stood there listening to his birthday messages on that machine. What a awesome memorial of his life, I'm happy to know they did this.
Nelson would have been so proud ❤️ If only he could see how the RUclips 🎥 community has picked up where he left off in documenting every day life of ordinary people.
there’s something so beautiful and so melancholy about it at the same time. the bright sunny day especially adds to this feeling of time moving on, the sun shining into this space that feels so simultaneously full of absence and presence.
I visited his house in May 2019 when visiting the USA for a holiday from London, UK. After watching many many videos Nelson made, being able to stand inside his house was a very special moment.
Didn't know who this guy was so I googled him and ended up watching quite a few of his videos. Definitely ahead of his time. I saw one video (on his 39th birthday) where he films outside his home, boy has that area changed!
It brings tears to my eyes and warms my heart that they dedicated the third-floor to him. A couple other walk-throughs I’ve seen this wasn’t there yet and it was all just a regular art gallery. His portrait and his pictures of all of his friends and having his videos playing all the time oh my gosh. SO wonderful. He would be so pleased. This makes me so happy. ❤️
i've gotten to know Nelson Sullivan through his videos, and feel like I'm now grieving for him, without ever having met him! He was such a warm and wonderful person, and his videos bring you back in time, literally time travel, so wish I'd had the chance to meet him! Thanks so much for showing this--it's amazing that his house is now a tribute to him and a way of life! I cried watching this.....
@@Hellacious_Abarth I feel exactly the same. Watching his videos, getting to know and love him all this time later, and grieving his loss, without ever having met him. Time is weird.
@@boop4904 I am very thankful for his videos. Unique loving people such as Nelson are a rarity in this world. His spirit was bigger than his moment in time on this planet. It would have been an unknown tragedy if he had not documented who he was. When I am feeling down all I have to do is watch his videos and I feel apart of something extraordinary. He has a way of filming where I feel included and right there along side him. If that makes any sense. Nelson was a priceless gift to our world.
I’d love to hangout with him just for a day and be outside New York all day and night. I honestly wanna shake his hand and give him a hug. Seemed like such a great guy and so nice
I know what you mean. Its so weird, you almost feel like Nelson was a friend after watching his videos and I find myself feel sad for him, sad for Christina Superstar, sad for Blackout.

Well, the streets were filled with druggies, hookers and in the hot humid summer, I am told, the place smelled pretty awful. It was not desirable to normal people. But yes to have a 3 story house in NYC?

All the memories at this place... every nook and cranny you filmed just brought back memories of when Nelson filmed those exact spots too in his videos. RIP Nelson.
Amazing how this place has been preserved. Nelson Sullivan was a person ahead of his times. A true pioneer and originator of the modern day vlogger and selfie style video recording. His countless videos take you on all types of journeys throughout the NY city. The way he captured the era of the days of the 80’s is truly art within itself. His videos are quite intriguing and entertaining including the likes of RuPaul, Dee-Lite, Michael Musto, DJ Keoki, Michael Alig, Keith Harring, James St James, Julie Jules, the list goes on….. RIP Nelson Sullivan
Beautiful stuff Kid. Nelson is a very important videographer....he was ahead of his time. You can carry the torch now and capture the sights & sounds of NYC. Amazing to see today the inside of where Nelson lived. Both amazing and sad at the same time. Nelson seemed like a beautiful man. Well done.
6:03 imagine nelson going out and seeing his neighbourhood like this. fancy, taken care of, full of people, full of life. he would be happy. when he lived there it was full of trucks, no people and bad condition.
The area that this house is in was previously a meat packaging and delivery market in the 80's before it got revitalized and gentrified to the trendy hang out square it is nowadays.
RuPaul lived here couch-surfing with Nelson. RuPaul then rented it with three others, for $1500 a month till around 1991. Imagine, a three story house in Manhattan for $1500. So many people passed through that door and up those stairs. It’s wonderful that Nelson captured so much of that amazing time.
Hmm, sort of "true"… The rent was not really paid. Nelsons brother Mark obtained a court order to evict the "characters" living there. Most of Nelsons personal belongings were stolen and sold, I am surprised the telephone survived. The tapes were joint property of Nelson and Dick, so Dick did come and take those. The poor dog "Blackout" was not well cared for and lasted only 4-6 months after Nelson passed..
In his final video, he mentioned how beautiful his neighborhood was at the time. How he loved to take a walk to the pier close by where you're at. He was basically pleased with how his life went. He probably wouldn't mind an art gallery made from his final residence because art displays the beautiful work people makes. Also I am glad that vine he personally planted remains and I hope it remains for several years to come. I hope he's resting peacefully.
Nelson was such a lovely, kind & gentle soul...I think he would've approved of this. The portrait/painting of him & Blackout had pride of place in his living room. I don't think even Nelson realized how much of an important artist he was/is...I think appreciation of him as an artist will grow much bigger in the coming decades.

Somehow Nelson becomes your best friend. It was so intimate the videos he shared. So hard to watch the last videos before his death, because you know it is all going to end. Something changed when he died. Michael Alig went off his nut on drugs and helped kill a club kid, that was the death nell to the era. Part of me wishes that Nelson had been around to document, part of me thinks thank god he didn't see this all crash and burn. He would have become a famous documentarian, he was on the brink of fame. Will always love Nelson. Thank you for honoring him.
Many thanks ActionKid for making this video. Nelsons original telephone was amazing. It is also a little sad to watch as Nelson passed away before his time.

I was but a child when his creative crew had a hold on the old city. I’ve been so interested in what happened to his old haunt and now I know. I’m definitely going to visit soon. How amazing that 40 years later the public can take their own tour, pick up his old phone and hear his actual melodic voice on the other end. So proud of the people who made that happen. Keeping his ever so magical spirit alive 💫✨💫
Wow thanks for sharing!!! I finally finished watching all of Nelson old videos and was so curious as to what it looks like now inside! Rupaul did a video like a month ago walking up to the front porch and reminiscing but did not go in. So many memories. The impact is so amazing
Thank you for doing this video. Nelson Sullivan is being recognized more and more for the his incredible talent, being ahead of his time and also the warm and relatable personality that he projected through his medium. It's heart warming to know that young folks today acknowledge him and support his memory. And thanks for all of your videos, they are very enjoyable. Especially not being able to travel into the city now, the Christmas videos were much appreciated around the holidays. Be well..
Was so happy to see there was a floor dedicated to Nelson Sullivan. Such a talented guy and it is wonderful to watch all his tapes. He was, one of few who seemed to be inclusive with many, unlike most of the others in his films. He actually brought out the truth about what was going on in the 80s in gay community.
Nelson probably never dreamed that his home would eventually become a museum with a whole section dedicated to his life, which is so awesome and touching, and you can even see a portrait of him and Blackout. It was weird to see the backyard as it is now. I remember watching a video which I believe was taken on the last day of his life, where Lady Bunny had some burgers going on the BBQ in that yard. So surreal. I was a very happy child during the years Nelson was doing his vlogging and those years are still so clear in my mind. Of course I was unaware of Nelson at the time, or Mama Ru or Lady Bunny, etc. But this was what I will always see as "my era". I miss the 80s.
Cool! So touching seeing Nelson's telephone and answering machine! So glad that they have acknowledged him in his former home with the displays. Thank you for sharing!!!
Nice video, Nelson was the first guy to make vlogs in an analog era where people lived a way simpler life and were happy with one another. This happened way before most of us were born, and most importantly it wasn't scripted like almost everything before the 2000s. This unique opportunity to see what was like back then opened our eyes to our growth as humans with technology. Many of us will grow old, other will die sooner, but the future generations will have us as references the way we had Nelson. I just hope that we will continue our growth in the right direction and somewhere in the future someone will smile, because of us no matter if we are dead or alive.
Thank you so much for this video. I have wondered what became of his home and very pleased to see his memory is being honored within the art community he was such a part of. When you came to the 3rd floor, it choked me up. I can not think of a more deserving man to be honored in such a beautiful way. I have watched so many videos and grown to love his beautiful spirit. He was so kind to everyone, always complimenting friends, found beauty all around him and always appeared so happy. But most of all, it was the love he had for Blackout and all his friends that really touches my heart. He was a very unique and beautiful soul. The love he had for his friends choked me up and when he spoke of Christina's passing, he brought tears to my eyes. He described her beautifully as he spoke of her memory and I wonder if he realized he was just as beautiful as his friend. He was such a brilliant and bright soul that still shines many years after his passing. Through his lens we are taken back to a time where he walked this earth and given us a priceless gift of allowing us to follow his life and experience 1980s new York in raw form. When I am feeling down, I come here to watch his videos. It's as I have a friend that is walking along side of me and taking me out for a night on the town to meet so many unique people. I read after his abrupt passing that friends cared for Blackout in his honor... I never had friends as he did. His videos make me smile. He enjoyed every single day of his life and he touched the hearts of everyone he encounter and those he never met, such as myself.
Glad someone else has visited here paying tribute to Nelson's body of work. The guy didn't get beyond the front door in the last visit I saw c. 2017. I love that the front door and floors remain as they were in N's time there, and I like how you honoured him with the fish-eye lens, by the way! I don't know whether it's more surreal to see how the upper floor of 5, Ninth has been memorialised to Nelson with portraits and snapshots of his life flickering endlessly over that screen on the wall, or that, through him we may at any time pass through a door in to a long-gone era, and witness largely unedited, scenes from his life as it was in real-time. I sometimes think he captured much more than he realised through those recordings, and what they communicate to us is the importance of paying attention to our lives now, as they unravel, and to those around us, for we never know how precious those minutes might become in retrospect. Something about his work has touched so many of us, and goes to show that no man can know what his life may amount to in the end, or guess what effect his self-expression may have in the world, or how far the ripples will travel. I don't think they will ever stop. I, for one, will always raise a glass to Nelson, Blackout, Dick, Nancy, Blanche and everyone who made it all happen.
It was SO cool to see his telephone there!! Wow. When I go back to Manhattan I NEED to come visit Nelson's former home!. Thanks for the video ActionKid! Super neat!!
The telephone seems to be one of the few things that was not stolen and sold after Nelson passed away.. Nelsons brother Mark, had to obtain a court order to evict the "characters" that were living there.. Nelson was a kind and generous person who was abused by the unseemly..
I'm glad to see Nelson Sullivan recognized for his videos of 1980s NY. A bit more about the life Nelson and his housemates enjoyed in the house would be a nice accompaniment to the video. I gather that about 4 people lived there, plus the dog Blackout. They and their friends were heavily involved in the local nightlife. Of the group living in the house, about the only one likely to be known to the general public today is RuPaul.
Thank you for this tour! So cool! Glad to know it's now an art gallery. I believe Nelson's bedroom was on the 3rd floor. Thank you for sharing this with us !💖💖💖
Awesome. I think he would’ve loved this. Though he was just a few years b4 my time of promoting parties with queens in NYC, I understand he was an amazing person.
Earlier this morning I became a sub, watching your walk through crazy parts of NY. I had some free time now, went to go on a nelson sullivan binge for a few minutes(been doing that off and on since the news of michael aligs passing), and here you are at his house. Super sweet we get a look inside.. Reflected to his last vid with the backyard view. Thanks for doing this man! Nelson def had an appreciation of the arts it seems, so its nice that his home was converted to just that. Wish he was still alive and on youtube, but seems he'd be proud of others, such as yourself, for carrying the torch for him. Happy New Year!

Nelson Sullivan has left an outstanding footage of NYC gay art bohemia life of the 80s . its probably the most amazing collection videos about underground pop punk NY during the 80s . A real Treasure !!! Lovely video btw.
They likely don't understand the significance of Nelson Sullivan being a pioneer in "amateur" videography. One or three sentences at the beginning of the video would have helped.

So nice to see that branch still there. He planted it 🥺❤️
Wow thanks for sharing!!!
Be well..
just beautiful and what a lovely tribute to Nelson
Never been to New York, or the US even.
But I do know I would love to visit NY in the era documented by Nelson Sullivan.
This is the best video of Nelson's house!
Thanks!
I have a huge playlist to watch later on and to show to other people. They all say congratulations to you 👍
Nice video, Nelson was the first guy to make vlogs in an analog era where people lived a way simpler life and were happy with one another.
This is just so incredible. I remember watching a Nelson's video which was shot inside this apartment. It's completely changed now.
Wasn't this a bar a few years ago? Can't miss that awesome door.
Back when I lived on Jane this was area still a meat market. In more than one way.
What a difference 30 years made to the neighborhood!
Thank you so much for a great video! So nice to see that the art gallery did a tribute to Nelson. Love that. Thank you again.
Oh Wow! So Cool! I'm obsessed with Nelsons Videos. I go back constantly. Love to see Ru in the "Simple" life. I wish Nelson was still here with us
Thank you for sharing, it warms my heart to see it being preserved and utilized for art. This is on my bucket list of places to visit one day!
I’m so sure that Nelson would be happy to see the RUclips community. He was a pioneer and and a trailblazer in the vlog community
3:10 Wow - I used to have that exact same model answerphone, though mine was brown.
Awwww..loved Nelson’s videos..first Vlogger! ❤️Very good video!!
My apartment will be a museum too after I die. The famous Azarro, the Artist. 🎨 haha
And Michael Alig--but not in a good way.
Always need more Nelson
Don't forget Lady Bunny!
The Nelson Vlogging lives on!❤
Thank you for this ❤️
Wow the vine is still there
Thanks ActionKid! Huge Nelson fan, he was one of the first to do it!
Thank you for this tour! So cool! Glad to know it's now an art gallery. I believe Nelson's bedroom was on the 3rd floor. Thank you for sharing this with us !💖💖💖
What a fabulous space
Awesome. I think he would’ve loved this. Though he was just a few years b4 my time of promoting parties with queens in NYC, I understand he was an amazing person.
Thank you ActionKids for the great tour and narration.
Love your videos bro, nice narration and awesome quality 👏👏💪💪
Nelson is a NATIONAL TREASURE ❤
Thank you for this amazing tour.
Have watched many of Nelson's videos;
it's wonderful that they've turned his home into a museum!
Terrific catch! 👍👍👍
A Gallery!
Gansevoort(-street) in the Meatpacking District, is original a Dutch familienaam
Oh actionkid thank you so much for taking us inside. I followed Nelson Sullivan vlogs just like I follow yours. Except his were done 30 years ahead.
That vine is huge, thick,it's very cool.
Thank you for sharing this!
I love your channel and the fact you lets us see so much, as you walk with your camera. I am happy you shared Nelson's house with us. He is one of my fav people ever and so are you. Good work!!!
Love that they kept one side of original railing. The phone is epic despite it not be the exact same model it is very close. Where Nelson would let us listen to his messages.
Beautiful vlog kid big boots to fill if sullivans your protege keep up the good work you put him back on the landscape he would be proud loved it keep safe
I love the video of Nelson's home thanks for doing it for us I love he's Videos and I look at them all the time thay so relaxing
Nelson Sullivan has left an outstanding footage of NYC gay art bohemia life of the 80s . its probably the most amazing collection videos about underground pop punk NY during the 80s . A real Treasure !!! Lovely video btw.
Hood job ActionKid! Now im nostalgic watching this. And i put this on my bucketlist!
Based on his videos, it seems he enjoyed visiting art galleries. He would love that they turned his building into one.
Thanks for sharing!! Very interesting
Never been here, thanks for the splendid tour 👍 ( brainless people disliking your videos)
They likely don't understand the significance of Nelson Sullivan being a pioneer in "amateur" videography. One or three sentences at the beginning of the video would have helped.
