Why are we confusing race with ethnicity or nationality? Only two people here are mixed race and mixed ethnicity. The other three are ethnically mixed, but are white. Lexi touches on this confusion somewhat when she answered the question about "Where are you from?" As a multiracial and multiethnic person, I've seen this confusion all my life. This said, each person's perspective about being transnational and raised in Asia is interesting.

I am pretty confused by those titles in these videos. They record it in Korea and it's probably done by Koreans, maybe they just understand to these things differently than we do in western culture. Czech and Romanian is not only the same race, but even the same ethnicity, if you compare average person from that country, not member of minorities like romani and others. We have a lot of Romanians in work here in Czechia, sometimes you can spot that theya are not a native Czechs, but sometimes you can't. Interesting about these nations like Romanians or Ukrainians is that males mostly still have hair even after 30 years old, while most of Czechs are bald like me. 🙂 When you say "eastern european face" I mostly imagine that arrow made from hair on their foreheads, which Czechs mostly don't have, but Slovaks do.

Race is a social construct and not scientific. If you have to classify based on race then there are only 3 races. Caucasian, Mongoloid and Negroid. Caucasian in this case includes Europeans, west and south Asians.

It's kind of up in the air because there are Dagestanis who who ethnically Dagestani and who are not white and there are Tar Tars who are not white... so like.... we're talking about groups of people who have no defined race associated to them.

Being from the Levant, people in a good portion of Asia (16 people ~70% of people I’ve met from 6 countries), most of Africa (20+ people ~85% of people I’ve met from 9 countries), and literally the majority of South America (15 people ~95% of people from 5 countries ) seem not surprised at all by how we look, and might live
However when people come from more than half of Europe (30+ people I’ve met ~50% from 4 West European countries) or especially North America (20+ people I’ve met 100% of Americans and 9 of 16 Canadian people), seemed shocked as our appearance and lifestyle did not match expectations, and some even thought there’s a “conspiracy” of sorts and that we’re all fake … YOU figure out who that was !!
So basically it depends on the people you meet, there’s NO “universal” code, there are only myths and dominant ideoligies, basically prejudices of each people and thankfully, all people of earth do NOT share all of them … yet.
On another note, some of the answers to “ethnicity” in the video were kinda converted to “what language I speak” rather than ethnicity by participants 😂 but that’s understandable and makes more sense for most cases, not all.

I think the differences on the question "Where are you from?" might tell us more about the differences between men and women than anything else.
It's unfortunate the young lady of Nigerian and Puerto Rican ancestry lives where she does in the states, this subjects her to constant gaslighting and people's viewpoints there start to become jaded when asked about their ethnicity.
Meadow's answers are understandable, she probably gets her mother's good looks, and maybe can only substitute Finland or one of the Baltic states instead of Russia in order to avoid confrontations with people. Rather than having to answer for two knucklehead leaders, it's easier to just say S. Korea.
The young lady of Czech/Romanian ethnicity would get mistaken for Swedish or Norwegian ethnicity here in Wisconsin. She's very pretty and fair skinned. We do have a fair number of Bohemians living with the Bavarians around Oshkosh, and even my family spent their last few years in Bavaria (before 1880), living in Bischopfsreut, which is only a few miles from the Czech border.

Why would she feel "proud" of her supposed "mixed race" ancestry?! Italians, spanish, portuguese and the majority of people from balkans are white, so even if your wife felt proud of anything, she would feel prou of her ancestors' ancestry but not race, because that's the same race! There were arabs in Iberian Peninsula centuries ago and they didn't mixed much with christians, even we both got along. Besides that, this video is about "race" (whatever that means and however it can be measured). There are people in the video that are white, like the guy in wool black sweater and the girl with blue jacket (probably they had someone non-white in their family centuries ago)! Muricans tend to not consider people white if the speak Spanish, which just shows ignorance! What I found so strange is that some muricans don't"consider" a person to be white if they don't have blond hair and blue eyes, but if it's an american in the same condition they consider! After watching the video and reading the comments I think some people don’t realize that race is a social construct. What that means is different societies have different ways of grouping people. The mistake is assuming everyone thinks the same way you do. For example some people on here have mentioned European and African as races where in my country these are NOT considered races. People of European, North African, and Middle Eastern descent backgrounds are all considered as white in the USA. So if you are ethnically a Swede you are the same race as a Moroccan. In the USA I’m black. In my country we generally don’t consider someone biracial unless it’s recent but the truth is black Americans are on average 25 percent European descent. However, when some places in Latin America I’m not considered black because I’m not dark skin enough. There are a lot of people who make it more about skin color than lineage. and I’m called mulata, criola, morena and a bunch of other stuff. I have several friends who were considered white in LA and not in the USA because they are too dark skin. When people ask me where I’m from I have to gauge what I think they are asking. Sometimes they just want to know what city, state. But sometimes country or could be asking me by ancestors background. It only bothers me when I answer and people act like the don’t believe me. I’m American and so are my parents, grandparents and great grandparents. But race doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. I have heard white Europeans people called racist for saying nasty things about Roma for example. They have been in Europe for like a thousand years or so I think. I have heard Mexicans called racists for disparaging Guatemalcos. And we all know that there are people who ascribe to the idea of the Aryan race. In South Africa and some other places there is what’s called colored. I have had people approach me speaking English, Spanish, Italian and French. Depends on where I am and if people assume I’m a local.

I think that Hispanics in the USA are generally not as accepting of people who don’t speak Spanish into their inner circles. I have friends who are Hispanic and don’t speak Spanish and they are made to feel badly about it. On the other hand I’m not Hispanic but speak Spanish. I have never had any issues and many of my closest friends are Hispanic. It also depends on what kind of Hispanics you are around. Mexicans tend to think you should look mestizo to speak Spanish versus Caribbean and South Americans are more likely to assume I and lots of other different looking people speak Spanish. So my experience in Dallas is different from Miami. I went to Puerto Rico and most people assumed I was from there. As far as black people not accepting lighter skin people I think it depends on the background and the area. Some black Americans don’t see any foreigners as black regardless of their skin color. But then some people will come to the USA and say they are not black and only want to be identified by their tribe or nationality not as a race. When I lived in a very diverse city no one cared or mentioned my complexion. I only started getting comments when I moved to a place that had a higher concentration of black people. Colorism is usually among people of the same background. And seems to be more of an issue with women and desirability. Where I live now is like 95 percent white. White people who don’t like black people don’t like black people. I don’t think my complexion it matters that much. To a lot of them we all look alike. I used to have a job where I would get called by my coworkers names so much I quit correcting people.

I am US born with Mexican born parents and personally my experience has been similar to what you said. I think Latinos in Latam are more accepting than US hispanics and that's probably because every ethnic group is trying to retain their identity in a melting pot nation that is demanding (intentionally and unintentionally) you to become cosmopolitan and adopt a universal idea which is one mind, one value, one moral code, one [civic] culture, and one language. I'm sure it happens to other ethnic groups in the US besides hispanics and it seems to me as if every group is just trying to "survive" by keeping their identity they inherited from their parents

I think this video and this comment section constitutes quite good evidence for the claim that "race" is a social construct :D People from different parts of the world understand it completely differently, and many people are uncomfortable with the whole idea of different human "races".

7:14 Here, it's ALSO a boys vs girls thing 😂- Boys are usually not much guarded about sharing their personal stuff while girls are all cautious and annoyed with the curiosity!

Curiosity is fine, but disrespect is not. I actually love talking about my background but often when I received these questions, people told me I was wrong or made assumptions about me that were unfair and unkind.
As a result, I have a bad impression from the question because I've been hurt by it repeatedly. I hope this clears things up.

@@tj_and_lex Yeah the intention is supreme indicator whether it's just a basic 'trying to be friends' or 'r u an immigrant?'
      - Though this assumption thing you mentioned- it's the 'curse of knowing'. People generally try to understand new things with the past or base knowledge they have.
To me this explanation is *made up by the white to get a pass or to calm their conscience* while being passively racist.
      - But still many among the shades of brown clinging to this curse of past know-how remain in the bubble.

The experiences from the Nigerian-Puerto Rican are some that I definitely relate to, now, because I'm mixed and I dont have like any of the "stereotypical" features, Ive had many people that have been very ugly about it. Whenever I started to work at my part-time job, I did had many americans act like 8:41, I've had some that are like "you aint American right? You look too cute and exotic to be from here"

Russia and white US: still white and white. Romania and CZ: still white and white. might have been the same country at some point. Ireland and Ukraine: would still be white if it wasn't for the Jewish ancestry. if the first 2 lived in either of their countries and spoke the language, no one would question them on where they are from and i wouldn't really suspect the 3rd guy is a foreigner if i met him on the street in my predominantly while country.
