- She can't sing a note, but sure can emote; that's Ms. Grahame! How many actresses could put across comedy, sultriness and coquetry in one number? Check out the eyebrows during her performance. With beautiful Maureen O'Hara and Melvyn Douglas.
She was SO lovely!
Thank you for posting. Gloria Grahame was, and remains singularly talented and attractive.
What a doll!
I agree! Her role in this was kind of adorable space cadet, but she was very talented! Thanks for writing!
Despite what has been said about Gloria's singing ability (dubbed here by Kaye Lorraine), or lack thereof, in the immortal musical 'Oklahoma!' she really did sing the song 'I Cain't Say No', and, her non-professional singing tone aside, she manages to hit all of the notes, and it's a BLAST, one of the best songs and performances in a film loaded with great songs and performances by 'real' singers (Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Gene Nelson). Anyway, just sayin', as a fan of hers since childhood, I always loved that scene with her delightfully funny song, and am so glad she wasn't dubbed, she made it perfect for her character, a great singer could NOT have done what she did with that song.
I love her as “Ado Annie” a total departure from the other roles she did in the past. She should of been nominated. But she had a hard time doing the moving and supposedly was difficult on the set and rude to a couple of the actors. It was I think her last really big movie her reputation started to suffer plus her private life very scandalous. Sleeping with your 13 year old stepson doesn’t play in Peoria or Hollywood.
@@notnek202 The 'scandal' you just 'furthered', haha, WAS DISPUTED, so DON'T pile on poor Gloria, whose accuser, husband Nicolas Rey, was himself 13 years older than SHE was. He is the source for the scandalous accusation that ruined her reputation/career opportunities, and her psyche. His son (her 'step son' Tony) later married her and they had two kids, it lasted for 14 years. He was probably the only guy that truly loved her, and she NEEDED that, being so insecure. Just sayin....Nicolas Rey was no saint, he obviously had an affair with Gloria before they married, their child was conceived while she was still married to her first husband, the divorce was in June, but her baby (Nicolas Rey's) was born in November. When it comes to the sad Hollywood stories of exploitation of young starlets by older directors.....I sympathize with the starlets!
Thank you so much for sharing. She was quite an actress. Always a delight to watch and now hear...
Not her voice. It was dubbed.
You can't do the song any better than that.........she was such a delightful actress..
And, as always, 11-teen times "WE" are grateful! Thanks so much for your observation, and kindness. We'll look for Ms. Grahame in the celestial regions, where she belongs!
Why am I not surprised, my friend? You always come through with the most knowledegable posts! Wonderful part is that we can always count on a great performance from Ms. G, no matter the size of the role! Thank you!
Whose voice is dubbed in?
Exactly right she held her on with some of the best .She kept leading men busy.I know she had a very very tough time of it for a long while with her sanity and chemical abuse.Great actor no doubt.good post
About her lips controversy... I think her lips look just fine. In fact, I really think that the way her upper lip looks is part of what makes her so attractive and unique-looking. Why do people fixate on her lip "issue" ?? Don't get it.
She didn’t like the way she looked and was one of the first actresses to get plastic surgery and a couple were botched. She was the one fixated on her looks.
She was a Godess ...
That's voice double Kay Lorraine singing for her.
I cannot find any information on Kaye! I only found one video of her singing another song. :(
Gloria Grahame could not sing so dubbing was necessary.
Wasn't she just amazing? I loved her too, as is noted here on YT! She had the unique acting prowess to go from the "girl next door," to the "femme fatale." Also, though her private life was truly unique, how many ladies do you know who are willing to ride on an elephant, and still look glamorous? Thanks so much for your wonderful comment!
She really was fascinating. Saw the movie on TV last night, and just had to look up this song. Beautiful.
I've really never been clear on the entire subject of Gloria's upper lip! To me, it's always been kind of a non-starter. Her lips never affected her superb acting ability in any way. So, maybe she wasn't happy with their appearance! If even 1/298th of Hollywood stars today were willing to admit to what they'd done in the name of glamour or "box-office," there'd be no performers left! I have about 17 names in my head right now, but prefer not to comment. Once more, happy to hear from you!
@CineKarine Thank you! I never knew the name of the mysterious "dubber" of this song. I love Ms. G, and am grateful for your notice, and identification. I won't even go into the physical "lip-synch" contoversy of this piece. Talk about opening a can of worms! Lips, or not, I'm just happy there was Gloria! She was a brilliant talent.
Kaye Lorraine sang ‘Paradise’ for Gloria in the film ‘A Woman’s Secret’
She not Ava Gardner but there's just something about her~attainable!

One of my favorite leading actresses and one of the most beautiful women on the screen. She is sensational, she seduces. I adore her upper lips. Paralyzed or not they look lovely as they are. The nasty habit of the make-up artists of the era, who added excessive lipstick trying to make the women's lips look bigger spoils her image a little bit. She looked lovelier in the real world. The same applies for Marylin Monroe. I adore the scenes, where she teases with her lovely legs.
She was not only beautiful, and as with Bette Davis, she was unique and characterful to look at. Always fascinating in the film noir movies.
Can someone tell me the name of this movie?
dpstevenson This is from “A Woman’s Secret,” 1949.
The older Gloria got, the less her upper lip moved, as if it were paralysed. I always wondered why. Here she was still young, and did not show this problem, but slightly.
Didn't know anything about her lip. However, it added to her charisma...
Who gives a shit
It WAS paralyzed. She had multiple cosmetic surgeries on her upper lip that damaged it.
HI! my bad...sent you something about this not knowing you'd already commented. You're right on the money: Gloria had serious lip issues. Please, pardon me.
why did she do it? was it an obsession? (her lips looked fine and sensous in early films). Was she trying to improve the lip?? it really made part of her face look like a maniquin and ruined her career.
Obviously you're supposed to expect that this goofy dame can't sing, with this set-up - and then she sings like a bird.
Not so !! Where do you get such garbage from ?? She did end up marrying her stepson (who was much closer to her age than his father was), but she certainly didn't kill anyone !!!
