- Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel! Today, honoring her upcoming 100th anniversary this 2023, we're entering again noir territory and exploring the remarkable role and significance of Gloria Grahame in #FilmNoir. You won't want to miss this exploration tribute in which I will go over her iconic and essential contributions to film noir and some of my favorite films of hers. Her personal life is not the focus of this video, except for a brief mention, but her work in films. I apologize for my somewhat blurry image in certain parts of the video but the camera decided to focus on Gene Tierney (in the cover of the magazine I placed behind me). Who can blame it, right? It's a devoted film noir camera! I hope you enjoy and share some of your favorite Gloria Grahame noir performances.

Wonderful tribute to Gloria Grahame! She's always been one of my favorites.
Thank you! She’s a favorite for me as well.
My two favorite actresses of all time are Gloria Grahame and Ida Lupino. When they appear in a scene, I'm absolutely mesmerized by their screen presence.
Great video! Grahame had that presence on the screen that modern filmmaking just can’t seem to capture today
Perhaps because there are no women like her today…
I think I've seen just about every film mentioned and Gloria was excellent in just about every one of them. Almost impossible to decide my favorite, but The Bad and the Beautiful is the one I have watched the most times.
She is one of kind. Loved her in A Lonely Place.
In the Big Heat, Gloria says to Jeanette Nolan “I’ve been thinking about you, how much alike we are” and then blows her away. Her performances were always unpredictable which made her such a great fit for noir.
I agree, she was perfect in film noir.
That was a really well-researched, well-presented video. Very good! Thank you. Gloria Grahame was a very good actress and to me,m despite the praise she gets, she's still underrated. In 2021 i tried to watch everything available of her and i had a great time.
I completely agree, she is referenced a lot but still her acting needs to be more recognized. She did so much, sometimes with so little. I still have some films of her to watch but it is indeed great fun. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Loved Loved Loved Gloria Grahame.
' Glorious ' Gloria. Never disappoints.
Great and informative video on a wonderful actress.
FINALLY, someone who knows how to pronounce Vincente! subbed with a bell!
Well done, Miriam, a great tribute. Who doesn’t love Gloria Grahame, she could really break your heart with how her characters were treated. I suppose In A Lonely Place would be one of my favorites overall. Sudden Fear is great fun although I remember it more for Crawford and Palance. A late career film that I really like, which is not film noir, is The Man Who Never Was (the story was remade more recently as Operation Mincemeat). She doesn’t look in the best of health but has a couple of standout scenes.
Thanks a lot, Neil. I appreciate your words. I have to confess that In a Lonely Place is not amongst my favorite noirs, even though the performances are great and I like seeing Gloria in a different light. For some reason, I think her supportive roles are amazing, even if, like you say in Sudden Fear, it's a less impactful role. As I say in the video, I think she had the ability to make every scene she appeared in, count. Like in It's a Wonderful Life, for instance. I have yet to watch The Man Who Never Was, I have also read that she looks a bit different there, but still I must look it up. Thank you again!
Saw some of her films last month on TCM when she was Star of the Month. Great body of work.
Great video well done im a huge film noir fan and fan of Gloria
Same here, thank you for watching.
Terrific tribute, Miriam. Grahame always surprised me with her gersatility outside noir. I think she is really good in Oklahoma. I recently re-watched Minelli’s The Cobweb where she never looked more beautiful, in breathtaking technicolor. One of her last films Chilly Scenes of Winter was released on bluray earlier this year and she is fantastic in it. She never lost that inimical voice and sultry sass.
You are absolutely right about Gloria. I totally agree on what you say about her providing also great performances outside film noir. I do like her a lot as well in Oklahoma! I was not so entranced by The Cobweb although I really wanted to like it because of the cast. Gloria is stunning as you say. I also like her in the melodrama Not As a Stranger, even though her part is fairly limited. I have yet to watch her later roles, that's a good recommendation. Thank you as always, Roger. That's a great comment.
It’s versatility
Gloria's Outer Limits episode, "The Guests" was memorable TV noir.
Awesome summary.
Great to hear, thank you for watching.
Hi Miriam! Thanks for the tips.
I've liked Grahame since I first saw her in "Wonderful Life."
I've sometimes confused her for Marie Windsor, e.g. in "The Killing."
Thank you for this overview of Gloria Grahame .
She has always been one of my favourites. Especially in film noir .
She had the uncanny ability to look like an innocent little girl in one moment , and then a menacing , dangerous woman in the next instant . I have seen most of the films that you mentioned , and I look forward to watching the Thin Man movie that you discussed . I look forward to more of your videos . Cheers !
Precisely, she had that killer duality that was so genuine to her. I hope you enjoy Song of the Thin Man, it's mostly their film but Gloria has an early telling role in it. Thank you for watching!
I’ll follow up on your suggestions. I love film noir’s women.
A great video about a great actress! I adored her as the doomed femme fatale of The Big Heat! ❤️
You said "If you haven't watched The Big Heat I highly suggest that you do." I've seen it four time already but is it OK if I watch it again?
Arguably the best actress of the 50s
I saw TCM commentary that the shower scene in Psycho marked the end of Noir as it suddenly turned into the first slasher movie. So if that’s right Odds Against Tomorrow might have been the last Noir movies.
I don’t think it’s easy to pinpoint exactly when a film movement starts and ends. That’s what most experts say and is frequently commented, Eddie Muller mentioned that as well although he says that he doesn’t necessarily subscribe to that in his intro to Odds Against Tomorrow: ruclips.net/video/XJAsvdChQSI/видео.htmlsi=0ryPPB3ijXUb0xm3
Most film-noir aficionados learn early that “A Touch of Evil” is the last noir of the classic period. This is not to say that “Odds Against Tomorrow” is not an excellent picture and it’s certainly film-noir. Race may play a role. The film is in that nebulous category, Late-Noir.
She is incredible in ' The Cobweb ' and I am surprised it was not mentioned. She gave an erotic charge that was perhaps too much for Hays Code Hollywood, and in my opinion her greatest performance was in ' Human Desire, ' underrated and in the UK just a double bill feature. I saw her on stage in London ( maybe her last performance ? ) in ' The Glass Menagerie, ' and she was perfect in Tennessee William's play. Pity she never did ' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ' and my imagination can see it instantly.
I have focused on her film noir performances, even though I mention The Greatest Show on Earth. Certainly, I could have mentioned The Cobweb as well and Not as a Stranger. She is superb in Human Desire, very underrated indeed but the way she is pictured by men there is quite unfair. Seeing her on the stage must have been something else. I can see what you mention about Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She wanted to appear in the film version of Born Yesterday and I would have liked to see her in that role or on stage as well. I love Judy Holliday and the film version but Gloria would have been great at it as well.
@@MiriamVintageClassics Thank you so much for replying. I really appreciate what you are doing. I love film, and cannot sleep before seeing one. Foreign films and of course the greats from the USA especially. Great does not mean sanctioned by film books, but that rare film that few people have truly noticed. I think you have a wonderful channel and long may it continue. Tired of ( straight ) men taking over film criticism.
I appreciate your kind words. In terms of appreciating films, sometimes I do agree with labelled 'masterpieces' and other times there are lesser known films that I feel should be better appreciated. Those are so satisfying to discover but I prefer to open the scope not closing it. In RUclips I think there are more diverse channels in terms of who is discussing films. But again, for me, it's all about incorporating not excluding. Glad you find value in this channel.
I don't think Sudden Fear was a B movie. It was independently produced but does that make it a B?
That's a fair comment. It had a lower budget, as you say independently produced, and Crawford's salary held in escrow. Not sure, to be honest but it might have been wiser to steer clear of that term or say an 'independent film'.
She used to stuff her upper lip with a tissue before filming
I guess she was a girl who can’t say no…
I love Gloria Grahame.💕Thank you, enjoyed this volg 🎥📺🔥🎭🎼🫶😍. I would very much like to revisit movies and see some movies that I’ve never seen before that were shown in your volg🔥 🎭
