  • With a curl of her lip and an arch of her eyebrow, Gloria Grahame was the actress who stood up to both Humphrey Bogart and Lee Marvin in their most violent roles. In this video essay, Serena Bramble explores the burn mark Grahame left on the silver screen.

    Her part in "The Man Who Never Was" was heartbreaking... could easily have rated a Best Supporting Actress Award....that film is almost semi -documemtary, cool and detached Brit war film..but Gloria's character is the raw emotion the film needs,and hits the viewer like a ton of bricks.War is hell.Her best "unknown" performance..

      Not her best but more than adequate. strangely, through most of the movie her whole face has this glazed wet look that is awful. These are back in the days when a woman went to the powder room if her nose was a little shiny. BAFFLING.

    Unsung, unsung, very unsung. As a man now at the age of 60, i stumbled crossed Gloria, and really not paying too much attention to her, thru all the B/W films that i grew up on in the 60's and 70's on TV. Only interested in the main star, or stars of the movies that i saw, i started to notice her and said, Damn! I luv her, from that sweet little voice to the vixen she played in ones like "Sudden Fear". But the one that stood out to me of all was the roll she played in "The Man That Never Was" of the girlfriend of the false fallen British Soldier. It truly made me wonder how it was that she never had at least one film to her credit were she was the leading Actress. But good for her, i believe she lived her life with no regrets....or maybe,.... little to none.
    It's wonderful to see how Annett Bening emulated her, and...oh, may i also say, i also see some similarity to her looks in Taylor Swift.
    Can't go wrong with that at all. With Love, to Gloria Grahame.
    Michael

    Back in the late 70's when her husband was filming a scene in my neighborhood, she appeared at my door, looking for a son that may have been her stepson, and I learned who she was, but the only film I had seen her in was Oklahoma. She could have been anyone off the street because she wasn't dressed up in any way, and when she complimented my home which was innovated by me with my inventive crafts projects, I was very flattered, especially when she said that her director or producer would love to do a scene there if he was able to see what I had accomplished. Rest in peace, Gloria.

    I'm watching In a Lonely Place for the second time but can't get through it. I keep reading reviews which require me to rewind and watch a scene over and over to catch little things that went by me. This is a wonderful tribute. Thank you. I wonder and wonder. Grahame was much better in "in A Lonely Place" role than Bacall would have been. I can't imagine Bacall - who was a rather one note actress - conveying the range of complex emotions which Grahame displays so convincingly here.

    at this moment when men are being taken down from positions of power for their abuse of women, Gloria Grahame being remembered is a sweet irony. she was on the receiving end of male violence and possessiveness in her films, but it's her dignity that made her a great screen presence. highly eroticized, she's an underdog candidate for national heroine. thank you for this respectful, insightful appraisal.

      Unfortunately, she also may have been a sexual abuser -- of a minor boy. We don't know for sure, but she may have had sex w/her 13-year-old stepson.

    • @Denisenoe
      @Denisenoe 6 лет назад +1

      Let's keep this straight. We don't KNOW that this happened. We don't KNOW that Gloria Grahame had sex w/her 13-year-old stepson. This has been reported -- not proven.
      At any rate, I admire Gloria Grahame as an actress very muc. But she should have gone to jail IF she had sex a/her 13-year-old stepson!

    • @Denisenoe
      @Denisenoe 6 лет назад +1

      Again: She MAY have committed statutory rape w/a 13-year-old step-son. It is UNFAIR to write this as if it is established fact. What's more, this is not about being "never dull" but about committing a very serious crime.
