  • Thanks to Ken Choo for the suggestion!
    On the 10th episode of Time Travel, we go back to 1999, to take a brief look at Microsoft Office 2000. Office 2000 included a few new features compared to the previous versions, with the main notable things being under the hood. There is, however, a feature called Object Linking and Embedding, which makes it easier to copy data between Office Programs. Office 2000 came in 5 editions, starting at $249. It was designed to be fully 32-bit, and ready for the year 2000.

    Hi, Michael, I love your videos pretty much. One little correction though.OLE is not about copying and pasting things AFAIK. OLE is the technology that enables you to actually LINK and/or EMBED some Office files inside other ones. You just have to choose Insert->Object, and then choose some file to embed. You can embed the whole file, with it's icon visible in the document/presentation/etc, which you can simply double-click on. You can also embed the content of the file, so the other file's canvas inside your doc/ppt/xls is created, containing the actual file that you've embedded, and by double-clicking this canvas, its own menu appears (i.e. if you embed spreadsheet inside word document, by double-clicking embedded table, the Word menu interface changes to Excel toolbars). Although, if you dont want to embed documents inside another (embedding means adding size of embedded file to the size of the file that you're embedding inside), you can always simply link those files, but you have to make sure that you keep linked files avaliable.

    Wow, this video brings back some serious nostalgia for me. Who can forget Clippy, staying right by your side and watching as you penned yet another goofy fanfiction of your favorite anime? Or having to build a slide show in PowerPoint and loading it down with as much clip art and music MIDIs as you could, so yours would be the coolest ever? Never thought I'd be missing simpler times like those.

    OLE (Object Link Embedding) allows you to create a link inside Word that you can click on to open an Excel spreadsheet and visa versa...

    18 year mystery solved. I always wondered why our copy of Office 2000 Small Business never came with PowerPoint. You'd think a presentation app would come in a small business software suite. Going through senior high school in 2002-03 I needed to view and use PP but couldn't, which was pretty frustrating.

      PowerPoint is far more essential now than it was in 2000. It was a luxury back then. I remember how cool it was the first time I used it.

    • @mcrazza
      @mcrazza Год назад

      @@bchristian85 Back then I found it funny when a fellow student, teacher, lecturer or a business person used an overly busy transition/animation for serious subject matters. Things like bullet points and text would swirl onto a page; text would phase in too quick or too slow; inappropriate fonts (Comic sans) and ugly backgrounds, and so on. It made presentations unprofessional. They were just utterly clueless... and I miss it.

    Best versions of Office for their respective versions of (consumer) Windows:
    Windows 3.1(1): Office 4.3 (I call it Office 6.0, because of the version of Word in the suite)
    Windows 95/98/ME: Office '97
    Windows XP: Office 2003
    Windows Vista/7: Office 2010
    Windows 8/8.1/10: Office 2016
    Notice several versions of Office missing. That's, well, because like many Microsoft products, every *other* version is the good one.
    Office '95 (really, Office 7.0), first version to be native for Windows '95, the only thing really changed was theming and the splash screen, the applications all presented themselves for the first time was Version 7.0)
    Office 2000: really, the long-forgotten middle child of the group. Polished all of Office '97's rough edges and laid the groundwork for a truly stable Office. Solid, stable, got out of your way.
    Office xp: We shall never speak of this again
    Office 2007: It brought the ribbon......yay......
    Office 2013: A re-theme of Office 2010!!!!! Oh, and a couple tweaks here and there too.....

  • @bchristian85
    @bchristian85 Год назад

    I loved Office 2000 and 2003. Took me a while to get used to the ribbon after Office 2007 came out. I continued to use 2003 for a while. I think Office 2003 was probably as good as it could get and everything since has been feature creep or unnecessary changes. However, I do like 2016 pretty well and that's what I still use.

    Unfortunately Microsoft Office 2000 does not work on Windows XP or Windows 7. When I tried to install it most of the software would not install or work.
    I could not even install Outlook Mail and that was on Windows XP. So there is no way you could run this on any Windows later than 98.
    But Microsoft Office 97 works fine on Windows XP and. And I think it will work on Windows 8 which I am going to try this evening. So MS Office 97 is the best one to install if you have Windows XP Vista or 7. That one works.
    The only thing that did not was again Outlook Mail. It installs and runs but you cannot send emails because it uses Microsoft Post Office not POP which is no longer supported in modern email. But everything else in Office 97 works on later Windows.

    • @null0byte
      @null0byte 6 лет назад

      Funny that you mentioned that it doesn't work in anything later than Windows 98. I used it in Windows 2000 Professional, and I'm pretty sure it works in Windows ME. (But then again, mine were MSDN software licenses) It DID work for me in Windows XP, but I think that's because I did an Upgrade from Windows 2000. When I had to do a full install from scratch I used Office xp (lowercase 'xp' because that's how Microsoft marketed it, and yeah, it was horrid, 2003 was much better) instead. I'll have to track down some things and try it from scratch in XP since the two are very close in pedigree.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman 6 лет назад

      No I could not get MS Office 2000 to install or work at all on XP. Windows ME and 2000 are different from XP. As they are more based on Windows 9x but XP is not. Many features that were in Windows 98 and ME were removed from XP and later Windows. That's probably why you can run Office 2000 on Windows 2k and ME. But as I said it does not work on Windows XP or Windows 7.
      I tried MS Office 95 on Windows XP but that did not run well either. Kept freezing and crashing so could not use. The best one to run is Office 97 as it works on all later Windows. Except for Outlook Mail which did not even run on XP. I thought it did but when I tried it only opened Windows Explorer not the email client. So there's no way Outlook Mail works on XP but the other apps in Office 97 do. Same as they work on Windows 7 and 8 and Vista.
      Office 2003 would probably work on Windows XP, Windows 7 and 8. But it does not have the Office Assistants it did on Office 97 and 2000. As Microsoft removed these from later MS Office.

      +mjd7999 They have TONS of copies of ms office in there, but they had to remove Office 2000 due to a DMCA. Just search Office on the apps section, click the one that says Microsoft Office and then click 2000 and it says it there.

    • @robertvelasquez823
      @robertvelasquez823 6 лет назад

      Oddly enough Mjsonic1, there is a keyless iso download of Office 2000 professional for free in the website downloadfreeos.weebly.com; Simply click on Downloads, and then Download Software for Windows and Mac OS X, and type in 2000 in your browser's find bar to see it (CTRL+F for Windows and Linux on Google Chrome). And as I mentioned earlier in this comment, it is keyless, so that means that you do not have to type in a product key. It is already typed in and it works. I manly use Office 2000 in Linux Mint using the Wine application to run Windows programs on Linux. and It works, but there is a bug in which the Office Assistants do not show up. If you do not mind just typing in a blank sheet without something helping you type a word correctly then you can just ignore the dialog box saying that Office Assistant needs to be reinstalled.
