Dominic, I sent you a message since you have replies disabled. I have fixed the link in the description, I honestly don't know how I forgot to add that, thanks for the comment! :D
I remember this was on my first computer back in 2001 I believe. I can still hear the AOL "You Got Mail" sound as you got bumped off line then you had to reconnect. Oh, I almost forgot. You could not use the phone and the computer at same time. The horrible gut wrenching sounds of the modem trying to connect. Man, you young cats got it made today! Using the computer then was almost a full-time job! LOL
Listening to this old video, your voice has changed drastically over the years. I had to check and make sure I didnt wonder off onto someone else's channel.
I have Windows Millennium on a Pentium IV and I can tell you: 1. All ms-dos games that are not speed sensitive to CPU run perfectly. The best video cards for Ms-dos compatibility are the Fx series from GeForce, for sound you need an Aureal Vortex 2, Sound Blaster Live, Audigy 1 or to have a pentium IV motherboard with an ISA slot. 2. Windows Me does not blue screen when you remove the CD, usb stick or floppy while it is being read. 3. It has wireless keyboard and mouse support. 4. The location of a driver is saved. 5. The usb stick does not need a driver. 6. I do not recommend the VDM drivers because there is no longer support for sound in ms-dos, but with VDM you can use advanced stand by functions (suspend to ram). 7. Any usb joystick does not need driver. For Ms-Dos you need a joystick connected to the game port. 8. Windows Me is the most stable, I tested it after installing many programs and games without restarting and it didn't crash. 9. If I had to choose another retro operating system, it would be Windows 95 and in no case Windows 98.
A blast from the past! I think I still have my original Me disk somewhere. I have to say I don't miss the long install and all the blue screens. I think the computer I had this installed on came with a 200MHz CPU, an IBM I bought at Radio Shack for $2600.00. Wow those were the days.
Hey all, Just wanted to say I just finished following this tutorial with VMWare Fusion 7.1.2 on a late 2013 13" macbook pro, without any issues, none of the errors in this video happened for me, and because I tried it on the built in SSD it was even faster then this video. installed VMWare tools without any issues either. Windows 98 has also been known to error as shown in this video for random reason. I currently own a copy of windows 7 and windows 10 via the free upgrade, but my primary os choices are os x and linux. It is fun to mess around with retro stuff though, computer history can be very fun to re visit, especially with virtualization technology. The video was well done, great Job! P.S. For those who don't know, you get the grey screen before installing VMware tools because there is no display driver present so it can't display all the colors. When the correct display driver is installed the default desktop is in fact blue.
mjd7999 I was curious if you knew how to apply the patches to windows ME ? I have auto patcher for windows 98 SE, as I have a legit CD of that, and I had a legit key but lost it so had to grab one from online. Anyway windows me seems stable in the VM and i would love to patch it with the updates for it. Since windows update doesn't work for these older copies of windows the updates have to be done manually. So was wondering if you knew where i could get them? Google wasn't too helpful. Thanks
+Jason Jordan Actually I did try for a while but gave up after a while because I decided to just stick with windows 7 and 10 for my virtual machines. on a non apple computer I run linux for my media server / desktop.
I have that easy accounting and it only works with Windows me. I had trouble with my hard disk and since I tried replacing that I have had one hell of a time getting the system up and running again I have copies and backups but the problem is I don't have me installed I've bought several discs but they don't seem to load is that because they came with Dell computer?
Hiren's Boot CD version 8, 9 or 10 works well as a bootable medium with DOS. You can partition from Norton Partition Magic with GUI, and have a bunch of other tools, including a stripped down "mini" build of Windows 98 (later XP). The official floppies have no use, and don't actually boot into Windows. WinMe requires a lot of diabling and tweaking to work stable, and be functional: to unhide DOS and rip out the system restore / file protection. Not worth the effort compared to win98. I was stuck with Me for a while.
I remember, as a kid, i found some files in the \Windows\system32\oobe folder I think, which kinda looked like Windows Me had a setup assistant like Windows XP did. You know something about this?
Ya know how many times i got a blue screen of death on a VM running Millenium? 10 times for bootup 14 times during run and 5 System Is Busy death screens and a bonus 2 for shutdown It also took me 1 hour to get the system to boot up properly How sad
You got all those setup errors because WebTV for Windows expects a TV tuner card. It's best to do a custom install and uncheck WebTV, Outlook Express, the Address Book, Dial-up Networking, etc.
Given that MS-DOS 8 is incapable of Real Mode, you could make a disk image with a Windows 98 boot disk, or a Windows 98 DOS bootable USB, CD-ROM, or use a second computer. Then you could install Windows 98 and Windows Millenium together, and two BAT scripts that run/enable either 98 or Me, and rename themselves to prevent renaming WINDOWS and Program Files for each OS, they could be WinME.bat or Win98.bat. If you boot to DOS with a Windows 98 boot disk and have Me and 98, you have the full and most modern 9x system, you can use Windows 98 to run programs that detect Me and refuse to run and to have full DOS.
Do ME works better if you change the hardware compatibility to Workstation 5.x? At least with 95 that method cover all the errors with drivers and blue screens.
I can't get past the setup. Whenever I type the setup code, it says it's a bad file. What's worse is that my R: drive changed into A: and the codes on the video were not in my machine.
Le Docteur I don't think there is much of a difference between them besides the reasons that I mentioned. They both have the same features and everything.
My first PC 80286 with Windows 3.0 MME, Maybe that's the Key to why I loved ME so much, I crashed the family 486 DX4-100 with a Bootleg Copy of ME.. I was grounded for a long while
Guys, those keys did not work for me. But I looked around for a while and this one did. GRD3D-R3JF3-Y4J6D-X3QDK-T62XM Im not sure what the problem is but if anyone having trouble with keys and they arnt working for them, try that one. Worked for me.
mjd Can you Do Windows Janus? (Not the windows 2000 64-bit Version The One that Has a Similar Boot Screen Like Windows 3.0 (1990) (Bit Version Is 16 Bit)
I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a Windows Me millennium edition i know its old lol. Is there any methods to erase or wipe the password for me to log into my accounts. I can log in to a standard account just by pressing cancel but I want to log into my accounts. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
It 2023 and i still have a guy who uses ME God help me he won't change and I'm trying to network attach a printer so far I can run the server software in the printer through his ancient browser and can ping the printer too. Now trying to use generic printer def to see if it can print from his DOS app. Pray for me 😃 BTW thanks for the install under VMware installed ME under VMware workstation V16.2 and it works ☺
I downloaded windows me stable version it is mentioned to be more stable. I'm going to use windows me on an old dell pc that looks like hasn't been ylused 5 to 10 years
I have done Windows 3.1 and will probably be doing 1.0 soon. Although, I have gotten a lot of requests for tutorials recently and am still trying to make those and other videos.
mjd7999 I can't do like the Command prompt things it takes too long. Can you put a download link where its just the disk with EVERYTHING in and it just boots up the installation like the Windows 2000 one? Because I like the kind of disks you gave us for the Windows 2000 because it goes straight into the installation if you know what I mean.
DanTDMx Unfortunately there is no way to do that. Windows versions from 1.0 to 3.1 were GUIs for DOS, so DOS is needed to install and boot up those versions. The Windows 9X series were based in DOS, and most CDs weren't bootable (I don't even think there were bootable 95 Cds) so you had to use DOS to install those. The Windows NT based OSes (Windows NT 3.1 and up) weren't based on DOS, so they could boot directly to the installation process.
mjd7999 hey can you make a video on using windows ME in 2015? I'm just curious to see if you can still browse the Web and play games and everything on such an old operating system. Thanks I appreciate it!

I searched the web. You can start the OOBE-Assistant by running: c:\windows\system\oobe\msoobe.exe /f
Is there any way to get it to fit 1366x768 as well as 1920x1080? The weird display drives me crazy and was hoping there was a fix…?
To get it to fit to your screen you have to go into the advanced settings and change the monitor type to standard television

I didn't know you had that logo since 2015!

Ikr!
You got all those setup errors because WebTV for Windows expects a TV tuner card. It's best to do a custom install and uncheck WebTV, Outlook Express, the Address Book, Dial-up Networking, etc.
help mine says cdrom not high sierra or iso-9660 format reading drive r using vmware player
You can skip the scandisk disk portion of the setup on Win9x based Os's by typing " setup /is " excluding quotations :)
For some reason both of the product keys are not working
i think WInMe is usable only after you install all the latest official patches up to the last year of support.

I used Windows ME a lot when I was little, though that was on my dad's computer. Too bad he didn't get XP but my aunt had it.
Is it suspicious that Windows Me didn't crash for me?
Problem. under the device name it says No Valid CDROM device found. Aborting Installation. I'm using Virtualbox.

Hey.....I dont see the floppy disk image so that Windows ME can boot up in the description....can someone send me the link please?
i dont see the floppy drive image where is it?
I tried to use the boot disk in Virtualbox but it's not VirtualBox compatible. Can you help Me please?
AustenMC It should work as it's just a .IMG file. What is happening when you try to mount it?
Joshua Franklin They should. I have been able to mount them before using VirtualBox
+mjd7999 it brings me an error message (at least i think anyway)
it says "archive is corrupt" can u put it on mediafire or something?

neither product keys work i used oem never tried retail
Um, I switch to the R drive (it said drive r) and whenever I do setup it says Not reading drive R ?????
You probably don't have the CD-ROM of Windows ME in the unit.
I did have the CD ROM in the VMWARE Drive
I thank I had a good Packard Bell computer, because I never did have problems with ME. It worked fine.
hey hey i need something can you give me the discs you used in the windows upgrade on the $5 98 pc
I can't get past the setup. Whenever I type the setup code, it says it's a bad file. What's worse is that my R: drive changed into A: and the codes on the video were not in my machine.
Mandii Farrugia Which VM software are you using?
mjd7999 VMware Workstation 10.0.7 Build 2844087
Mandii Farrugia Drive A: is the floppy drive. Are you sure you have the image mounted properly?
I followed the same things you were doing but the setup was the hindrance.
However I managed to boot from the CD-ROM directly later on, less complications and Windows ME was running swiftly on the machine. Thanks anyways.
what's the difference between the OEM & the Retail build apart from the bundled/got from a store thing?
Le Docteur I don't think there is much of a difference between them besides the reasons that I mentioned. They both have the same features and everything.
but Windows ME NEVER WAS A WINDOWS 98 THIRD EDITION
