I apologies straight up for the lengthy, non exciting video. Since building the workbench and vices I've had to make a few upgrades and felt that I should share them with anyone who may build these projects. While I was at it I decided to address the many comments I've had on this series of videos.

Neil you can't please everyone and don't have to justify your costing, wood workers are the tightest people on this earth proven by the amount of off cuts we all keep. top job looks great and functional.
Thanks Robert! Haha - you're right about the offcuts - I throw nothing away! The main point to the video was to show the upgrades I'd done and thought it was an opportunity to address some of the points that had been brought up. :)
Pask Makes hey Neil I'm a trainee carpenter studying bench joinery at college sadly haveing to retake my GCSEs I'm struggling to build up the muscle memory for cutting to my lines I either cut slanted like a dovetail or I just miss my back line any tips ? Thank you for takeing the time to read this if u do
I'm probably not the best person to ask - while I manage ok with joinery I'm certainly no expert. All I can say though is practice, the more you do most tasks the better you will get. I would check out Paul sellers channel and website you will get plenty of good tips from him - now he really knows what he's talking about! Good luck! :)
Pyro killer my old cabinetmaking teacher told me 25 years ago to to lean over my cut line so that when I close one eye I can see the line on both sides of the blade then you don't skew off your line, hope that helps.
Hey, old guys like me who live on social security and fixed incomes really appreciate people who specify plain plywood and inexpensive materials. If i had to go cadillac on all my materials I couldn't build anything. I've substituted BC shop or even cdx for a lot of stuff and it worked fine. If you are careful and pick and choose your boards you would be amazed the stuff you can build out of just plain douglas fir lumber. Keep up the good work!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

I made this workbench based on your design, and it turned out amazing. Just wanted to say huge thanks. I did use Baltic Birch for the top two layers of the top, and a layer of shop birch on the bottom, but the whole thing cost me under 165 Canadian (this is before any vices or storage). Another way to save money - go with exposed plywood for the top instead of adding trim. The rest of the bench is exposed plywood anyway, so why not the top as well? It's only a shop workbench anyway, not a piece of furniture. Plus, I think exposed plywood looks pretty good.

I’m from the States as y’all call it and to buy a workbench with tail vise and not so good leg or moxon vise we would have to pay $700-$2700 if we couldn’t build it ourselves, so kudos to you and your inginuity. I by chance am a garage woodworker as we call it and love a bunch of the ideas you build for your workbench. I will be using most of them in a future build. If that bench is difficult to build then you have no business with a work bench. You have made it very easy to build and very affordable considering the alternatives. Great job.

To those who asked how to save money on this bench...dont take up woodworking, you'll save tons of money.

Well we all have our vices...
Kudos for being so candid Neil. I think you've generally made quite accessible content(it's really only the camphor laurel people might lack but there's always a substitute even if it's less pretty) but still appreciate the time you took to respond like this.
Can also use MDF to support the top layer of your bench top which saves a bit and if anyone doesn't like the Paskin Ply approach you can still combine the two so you'll have softwood legs and ply as bracing. The cheapest approach, apart from being diligent with sourcing materials, is to use cheapest materials where it's effective and just spend a bit extra for the parts that need more strength.
When the world will end, I want Pak to be part of my tribe, for his skills, obviously, but also because he seems such a nice fellow to hang around with. Congrats for everything!
Some great ideas in this bench. I also made my bench frame/ legs from ply in the same way, 10 years ago, it has been rock solid. Love the vises you've made.

They are like cheap cheap and then they buy Sjobergs or Lie-Nielsen Workbenches for $2500!

As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
The bench looks a great project. We worth the time, effort & the money.

Another good source of timber is from old cheap furniture. Check online sites where people list items for sale and free. My brother uses old church pews in his projects because they are made of solid oak. Churches that are updating or selling the pews will post them on such sites. The last load he picked up was FREE and there were 16 of them! His trailer wasn't long enough to haul them, so he rented a longer trailer. He paid $50 for a half-day rental and so that was his final cost. His son and a friend helped with the loading and he has his own system for lifting them onto a trailer. I can't tell you how much timber he got out of them, but it had to be close to 400 ft. When I was setting up my shop and I didn't have a lot of money to spend on a workbench so I got creative and I used a 1 1/4" thick rock maple tabletop that I got for free off of Craigs List. People can be lazy, and if it requires work they sit and complain about it. Their back seat drivers who have never picked up a tool before.
G’day Neil! Great job mate, from a newish hobby wood worker in Australia often buying from Bunnings I’m so glad you made the comparisons for us and many others. I agree, wood here in Aus isn’t cheap but it can be, plus Bunnings has an off cut bin and letting mates know you want wood helps with supply. I built my first workbench which is doing me proud but I am considering your idea for the next bench.

Just wanted to say--I very much enjoy your videos! I am soon going to be a grandfather and so I have liked the threaded wooden nuts and bolts and ratchet you made for kids. In a few years, I am hoping to build the same! I also have had your workbench design near the top of my list for what I want to build! As I only recently became a RUclips viewer of wood working, I have been telling and showing my family the various woodworkers I enjoy and you are always on the list!

Two of those benches sold at retail would bring enough money to buy a small bandsaw mill from Harbor Freight or Woodland Mills.
Then wood prices would be REALLY cheap, depending on one's ability to scrounge up or cut trees to logs and then lumber!
I have a pile of 4' x 4' x9' x 2" cherry that could be used to build this bench for $0.00 on the wood! How "cheap" would that be!!!

With the upgrades to combat wear (even before upgrades) this is worth more than any work-level bench from the big box stores.

I think your bench is great and cheap, in the UK to buy a ready made basic bench will cost around £200. and they wobble around the floor, good exersice chasing it but home made is better.

this shows what a person can do, with planning ahead and taking advantage of supplies that are presented. a bench could be made from pallets, wire reels old tables etc. thanks for the great video.

Excellent video, very informative (& inspiring!). Been reorganising my tiny workshop. Still not got a dedicated woodworking bench. Think I'll build a nano- version of yours. Got a load of high quality marine-grade ply off freecycle (years ago!), which I've been saving for just this porpoise...

Great bench and I love your style,good to see a fellow scav at work.I just finished a face vise I made with some "acme" theaded rod I salvaged from a small stool even managed to weld some mild steel to what I think is the cast iron piece that the threaded rod screws into works great and cheap as chips,literally!

Wow. $190/$290 for a work bench. In the US, where I live, you can buy a bench at Harbor Freight for that, but nothing like the quality and solid build quality as that bench. Plus, in the US, you could spend more than $290 USD for a tail vice. That's incredible, Mr Pask. That's a great, inexpensive bench. Good for you. Thanks for your videos.

Very nice build. Everyone has a budget. This does not break the bank at all. Even if you are a High School kid. Build something strong and solid it will be a longer lasting tool more satisfying and more economical in the long run.

Subscribed a while ago but only just watched the bench videos. Really informative and as a novice, very easy to follow. The stuff about free wood - its so right! Ive found useable pieces of wood next to some trash bins in the form of old, slightly broken furniture. Take that home, cut the unuseable stuff away and you got some dry, probably straight lumber. I got quite a lot of useable veneer offcuts from a veneer selling and making company, I got there to buy some but bc they dealed with big orders they just gave me a bunch of their offcuts that I can use very well but they would have sent to be burned. Ok, picking up broken stuff next to bins and asking for free stuff is, for me atleast, embarrising, it really was, but it gets better with the next time and people are usually happy if you take their “trash” away from them. People are consious of throwing away something that can be used but they dont know where to advertise it (older people) or it takes them too much effort to deal with it so to the bin it goes. Also take a look at Matthias Wandels videos, how much free stuff he finds and picks up with his small car, most of his wood is former trash.
This is an excellent video on a very viable construction technique. Sometimes the best stuff isn't real exciting. The joinery is as precise as it gets and it's rock solid. My next bench will most likely be built of ply like this. At least, that's how I've designed it. In the US there are lots of people selling birch veneered ply at about the same price as construction grade ply at Lowe's/Home Depot. Been watching you for a good while; just noticed that I haven't subscribed. Fixed that.

I use a local company that manufactures shipping crates. They put out cut offs that they can't use and I and others enjoy collecting usable wood. Granted a lot is only good for firewood but there is plenty that can be used for projects.

Sir, you are simply amazing. I'm just coming into woodworking, with zero formal training. Started this because of purchasing an Inventables X-Carve 750mm CNC machine, and needing a workbench for it. Watching you is an inspiration. Any advice on resources, and how to improve? Thank you!
In Germany 12mm thick pine ply costs you roughly 30AUD.
Definitely something I should have considered after starting woodworking down under and then moving back to Germany. Woodprices here did cut my dreams down very fast and now I mostly rely on free leftovers from bigger companies.

Pretty sure the original block in the vice was glued together from two bits too, so making it from one bit in the second attempt probably helped too.
Another top quality video and for the hard of hearing people too....seems they missed your comments about using cheaper materials when building your bench.....with the invention of internet it's easy to google work bench designs and most come with plans but obviously some think everyone can't afford cheaper versions.....Neil, you've done an excellent job, explained everything very well and given your prices...nice going mate 🏆👍🏼😊

This is why I don't make RUclips videos. So many people are selfish, whiney assholes, and I really just don't have the tolerance. I think your bench is GORGEOUS, and a high bar we all should strive to reach.
I built my bench from a shipping crate & 3.5" thick structural particle board I got out of the dumpster at work. It was 100% free, it's solid, HEAVY, and flat, and most importantly, it works. It's definitely not winning any beauty contests, but it's functional & fulfills my needs.
Work with what you've got (or have access to).

You built the workbench for your needs. Forget about the naysayers.
Very amazing job. Going on what alot of people are saying you dont have to justify your coast, if it was cheep for you because you have alot of left over peaces it is still cheep. The valuable coast is the knowledge and the skills to be able to be creative and make an impeccable A grade bench. And plus, you built it out of plywood, The Samurai Carpenter and many others built there Roubo tables out of solid wood. They probably have a few 100$ invested and weighs a bloody tone. I'm building a very cheep version of that but with integrated T-track and with a removavle down draft table and remouvable router table with built in lift. Made with 2x6 for the frame and a melamine 1 inch surface. I think just the parts are costing more then the wood. I'm probably in about 250? and it's still not done. Cheep is a relative terme for everybody. You build with the means that you have. Imagine if you go out to buy a table made out of metal, it's still going to cost a lot of money and you probably wont have the accessories that you want. Building your own baby is so uplifting. Keep up the good work PAsk you do incredible things and you have a really creative mind.

If you want to build things cheaply, you have to learn to be a good scrounger. Matthias Wandel rarely has to buy any wood for his projects because he scrounges in apartment dumpsters and other places where furniture and wood is often dumped. You could also make friends with tree surgeons who often have no use for the wood from trees they cut down. Of course, in that case you'll have to have access to the equipment to mill it into lumber.

Those prices for pine you showed are shocking, even accounting for the currency conversion! That is hardwood prices here in the US.
Another source of "free" boards for sandwiching in the top layers would be from pieces of MDF furniture people throw away.
What people don’t understand is this bench will last you a lifetime 👍😊

here in the UK your Aus $300 (rounded up) comes out to around £160
if it came up for sale my where i live, you'd have to be careful, they'd tear your arm off 🙂
if you had added $100 to the cost it would still be cheap
a lot of good power tools can cost more but there no good if you don't a good bench to you them with

Hey I'm looking to get started and have loved watching your stuff, do you think you could do some kind of workshop overview video for what you're running there now in 2020. Also your added notes of flavor are perfect! Like telling all your mates that you're on the look out for some timber and the community working with ya is just the same as over here in NZ. Also some of our industrial and hardware sites even setup wood recycling piles, even if they are mostly pallet wood you can save a bunch when you're just getting your practice in!
