Robin sings the first verse. Barry comes in on the “And” then sings the second verse. This is the original recording from 1971. This is the first song they wrote after a 15 month breakup. They also wrote Lonely Days at the same time. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” is also the title of the HBO documentary from 2020.

"How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" is a song released by the Bee Gees in 1971. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single and also reached No. 1 in Cashbox magazine for two weeks. ruclips.net/video/ZInWGC5L2T8/видео.html

These brothers are the real deal. They are remarkable in their voices and music. The early years Barry sang in a natural voice. In 1975 he discovered his falsetto on a song Nights on Broadway and it took them to a whole different world. You are right their music is all that to me as well. They wrote more then a thousand and recorded so many of them. I love them. Great reaction!!

A Bee Gees original written by Barry and Robin realised in 1971 and their first No1 in America, the song was from there Album Trafalgar , Then AL Green covered the song in 1972 a year later so that’s where you probably heard the song, Bee Gees have written over 1, 000 songs, the Bee Gees didn’t have to sing other people’s songs they had a huge catalog of their own songs, They also equaled Bing Crosby and Elvis Presleys record of 6 consecutive No 1 songs in a row , great reaction thanks 🙏

They grew up pretty much poor, and started working professionally when 12 and 9 years old, with their father as their manager and their mom doing the laundry. Everything they made in Australia went to pay the family’s bills. Their father booked them to work in exchange for their fare to London, where they arrived in 1967 completely broke. After signing with NEMS a few weeks later, they experienced mega money for about 2 or 3 years, then split up for a few years, and the lawyers were the only ones going to have anything when it was over. They had some success after reuniting in 1970, but then were struggling again until JIVE TALKIN started their 1975-1980 successes. Because they had learned the hard way in the 60’s, they became much wiser with their money when the 70’s success came.... but they never forgot where they came from. They are known to be generous and charitable. Barry would split songwriting credits (and money) evenly with whoever was around when a song was written. They donated the profits from TOO MUCH HEAVEN to UNICEF in perpetuity, and then later BLUE ISLAND. They seem to be some of the most humble, down to earth celebrities, approachable, posing for pictures and giving out autographs, donating items and time for fundraisers. You are correct that they haven’t commanded the same respect as other (less talented) celebs, so it’s possible their catalog is under valued. It’s also not known how much of their music was bootlegged, or if their management was involved. Because Grease and Saturday Night Fever were such huge successes, it was assumed Sgt. Peppers would be, also... but it flopped. Because of bootlegging, more unsold albums were returned than had even been shipped out. They called for an audit of RSO and the details of the settlement are still undisclosed. I’m hoping that Barry will tell all in the book his son is helping him write!! Please react to TO LOVE SOMEBODY. There’s a great 1967 black and white tv appearance.

And Massachusetts was also written by Robin. Which by the way was Not the overall norm. Besides being lead singer, Barry was also the main writer.

Unfortunately they only have the audio of this performance. Hint, hint, Barry. Please release the video of this amazing concert. We know it exists because it was shot for a TV special that never happened and we don't care about the quality of the film. We just want to SEE them, not just listen to them! And the "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" part of the medley at the end is the best version I've ever heard. Robin's adlibs and harmonizing with Barry on one of his leads is out of this world! And, I'd like to see sexy Robin singing with that great beard of his! Please, Barry. I'll be 70 on July 31st and I'm not getting any younger here. 😊

Most of their songs from the 60s till around the mid 70s sounded extremely different. Almost like a beatles feel to their music. You could hear mainly robin singing a lot of the songs. Barry sang at a much lower key as far as singing register. As the mid 70s hit and disco took off, Barry tried his current high pitched falsetto which is still used currently in his concerts. He sings country now. Several albums actually. He did an albem last January that I bought that has him singing with all country artists incuding Dolly Parton. He is 76 years old now and his health is getting very bad now. He might not be singing for much longer.

Being such a fan of the instrumentation, you'd definitely appreciate Phil Specters "wall of sound". He regularly used a full orchestra in his songs. Check out Tina Turner's "River deep, mountain high"

They wrote it for Al Green , he released it first then a few years later the BeeGees released it. Robin started the song then Barry came in and sung the rest. You’d like Tragedy and Fanny Be Tender With My Heart. They were do special back in our days some of their Love Songs, like they were singing to us women. You want find a garbage song by them. Barry’s been married to his wife Linda for 50 years

The Bee Gees recorded it in 1971, Al Green did the cover in 1972. Both are good.

They did not write it Al Green. Barry & Robin just wrote it, Aug 1970, when they reconciled (Maurice contributed, but wasn't credited till much later). They initially offered it to Andy Williams. When he declined (though he later covered it), they recorded it & released it in the US Sep. 1971. The 1st cover was Johnny Mathis, also in 1971, then Al Green in 1972.

Have you reacted to Nights on Broadway yet? Recording that song is when they discovered their falsettos.

You really should listen to Al Green sing it too. I knew his version first back in 1971. The Bee Gees wrote and sang this too Al released it the next year 1972. This was way before they started sining disco.

If you want to hear Andy with his brothers on You Should be Dancing live use this link ruclips.net/video/_6MR-E_Qzz0/видео.html. It has all the original audio from the concert. There is another version on RUclips that has scenes from the movie mixed in with live concert footage, but they replaced the concert audio with the studio audio, and Andy did not sing on the studio version.

Thanks, Diane, for providing the link. I guess some people like to see the dancing, but I definitely prefer the original version with the LIVE audio.

What instruments do Bee Gees use?
Barry Gibb plays rhythm guitar. Robin Gibb does not play any instruments onstage, but plays piano, cello, and other instruments privately. Maurice Gibb played bass guitar, rhythm and lead guitar, piano, organ, mellotron, and electronic keyboards, synthesizers and drum tracks.

Robin did play piano and melodica (on Claustrophobia) on stage VERY rarely early on in Australia with Barry on guitar, Maurice bass and sometimes dad Hugh drums. Robin played guitar on his solo LP Robin's Reign, accordion on "Really and Sincerely" and organ and mellotron on songs like "World" but didn't onstage. A shame. Wish he had developed his skills beyond using piano for composing. Shy? Felt he lacked enough talent? Maybe compared to Mo who could play anything! An amazing musician and equally important, their musical arranger.
