    As a professor, I mean this when I say it: you should definitely consider teaching. You are so passionate and knowledgeable about this, and this translates well. Dermatology medical students would benefit tremendously from you. You are making science knowledge clear and interesting to my humanities -based brain. A scientist who can teach is a thing of beauty and joy forever :).
    I loved the deep dive on witch hazel. The historical context is super helpful, makes the information digestible and helps me see how it can applied broadly.

    I love Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel (the one with the yellow label). The only toners I've found that have helped my skin are the ones with Witch Hazel that have few ingredients. I do it at night to help close my pores. Doesn't make my face red. I know it's probably not a must but I feel like it has for me had more benefits than negatives.

      Im glad it works for u especially with rosacea! Even though it claims alcohol free, its not totally acurate. There are essential oils that can cause just as much if not more irritation and dryness and they are also distilled in ethanol/alcohol. No hate, just sharing info I learned from Dr Dray💜

      Hi Maria - Great question! Even within our own channel, there's varying opinions of witch hazel! I personally find that it's an ingredient with very little long-term benefit for the skin and so I rarely recommend it. Quite honestly, alcohol-free witch hazel is probably pretty safe and a soothing ingredient but I just don't know where it fits in a standard skincare routine! But if you like it, keep using it! - Dr. Shah

      @Doctorly Hi! I'm wondering if you've had patients with dermatillomania? I wasn't able to find a dedicated video. Maybe it's more relevant to psychology than dermatology. But I'd be interested to hear dermatologists' recommendations to deal with the aftermath. For example, I think the witch hazel toners are helpful in this situation due to the wound healing/ anti-inflammatory properties. Thank you if you've read this and all the best.

    I have been using Witch Hazel for a good long while after I cleanse my face. Since the price of everything has gone threw the roof I was looking for areas where I could cut corners and attempted to cut this step out of my skin care regimen. My face did not like it. My serums and other skincare did not go on as well and my skin just felt drier. So I added it back in and ta da my skin is back smooth again. It’s like the Witch Hazel prepares my skin to absorb the other products better. It’s relatively in expensive so I am keeping it. 😁

      I agree with your thought. Although some products can be good for most people, astringents and witch hazel don't fall into that category. It's a niche thing that can be good for specific skin types or needs (oily skin).

    I totally agree and believe whole heartedly in the restricting of blood vessels and anti inflammation! I use it on scrapes, cuts and sometimes if I pop a pimple (which I know I shouldn't do) if I put a compress of Witch Hazel on it for about 20 minutes, 9 times out of 10, I avoid any residual redness, inflammation, or even minor trauma to the skin. I've also used it on bruises! It can totally help bring down the intensity of a bruise if you put a compress of whitch Hazel on it fast enough. I have used it on my kids if they bump their head and get a goose egg. Just slap a compress of witch hazel on it, keep it on as long as my kids will hold still, and it totally diminishes the severity of a bruise/wound. Love the stuff, it's amazing. Don't love it as a toner though...

    • @Doctorly
      @Doctorly  3 года назад +16

      Absolutely, it deserves a video in the future. Back acne is actually very difficult and not talked about much (out of sight out of mind it seems). Although the same things that work for the face also work for the back it's tough to get active ingredients on the area and you may need a lot! But, washes that contain sulfur, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid help. Differin gel (Vitamin A/Retinoids) are still the foundation. May need a good friend to help put it on.
      Showering before bed or changing bedsheets frequently (weekly) also helps some people.

    • @Doctorly
      @Doctorly  3 года назад +7

      That's an interesting idea. The main difference is that baby's sebaceous glands (Oil glands) are not active. So baby soap is not as good as degreasing. Otherwise, a baby wash would be fine for adults. CeraVe Baby Wash & Shampoo has some very nice ingredients. I generally only recommend lotion for the face, so if it's for your face go for it.
      I don't think you'll see a benefit though going with baby products vs adult products with similar ingredients.

    I respectfully disagree. Is really how to use it correctly and what products you use. I have combination skin and redness on my chin. I have tried other products for my skin concerns and nothing has helped. However, the alcohol free toner from Thayer's has cleared my skin and made it better. I have been using it for over 5 years and my skin is much better than before. There are certain products that you all recommend for example: salicylic acid, which is not good to use on certain skin types, especially for sensitive skin. You also recommend things like Botox and fillers which in my opinion is not a healthy or natural way to take care of your skin. I do my own research and I let the results speak for itself. Have a great day!

    Next please your thoughts and advices connected to Accutane. Do you think that cumulative dose is necessary?

    • @Doctorly
      @Doctorly  3 года назад +3

      Cumulative dose is definitely important. Many studies have shown that those who do not reach the cumulative dose are more likely to relapse. Accutane/isotretinoin reprograms the oil glands and is totally unique in that way. Hopefully we'll be able to get a video out about isotretinoin/accutane in the near future, ultra important topic!

    I found a sunscreen with really good ingredients but I noticed it has witch hazel. I don’t know whether to turn away from it or give it a chance

      I realize this is at least a month old, but he did admit that there didn't seem to be any negative effects to using witch hazel. I can't tell you it might be worth a shot, since by now you've already made a decision one way or the other. 😂 But now I'm curious about whether you did and what you thought of it!

    • @analujan1568
      @analujan1568 2 года назад

      @@veryberry39 so I normally turn away from it because I follow Dr V and she advices to avoid it if possible. However I have oily skin and it turns out my skin likes the sunscreen just fine, I haven’t seen any side effects/irritation. If anything I feel like my skin is breathing a bit better, idk why but whenever I put anything on my face I immediately begin to sweat and so I noticed I don’t do that as much now.
