  • Yes and anyone that thought differently is on absolute crack. Proof inside.
    Don't believe hype about ported 18 vs Cobra jet, The Cobra jet manifold is still king daddy of manifolds, Don't take my word for it, This video shows a 18 mustang GT manual on E85, Cat deletes and a pmas intake With a stock 18 manifold, get upgraded to a Cobra jet setup with longtubes, and the difference is nuts.

    Performance parts for Mustangs used to be affordable, and cheaper, which is one reason they became so popular. $1,500 for an exhaust which is still just metal tubing, and $1,000 for an intake manifold is ludicrous. Almost all the performance parts for these newer Mustangs are just way absurdly overpriced.

    This debate is so reminiscent of the LS1 intake debate from the mid-late 2000s. Back then it was LS6 intake (stock ZO6, GTO and CTSV manifold) vs the F.A.S.T. Intake (think aftermarket CJ intake). The cost investment was similar too. $400 for a used intake, $75 for a bigger air lid, reuse the stock throttle body and you're in pretty good shape. But on heads/cam setups the 78mm opening couldn't hang with a full 102mm setup/better intake design, although forum bros will say otherwise. But the full set up was $1600ish. And here we are 10 years later, same shit

  • @177SCmaro
    @177SCmaro 4 года назад +7

    Considering around half the gain is likely from headers this still seems like a pyrrhic victory, at best, for Cobra Jet manifold. I don't doubt the CJ is still, technically, top dog but it's HP/$ is pretty mediocre to bad (between 33 and 66$/whp) so it should probably be one of the last mods on your list for the average guy. Hell, it's price is almost halfway to a basic supercharger. You can actually buy some decent journal bearing turbos for less than this manifold.
    Me, personally, I think I can live with the small hit to HP and spend the difference elsewhere, and still have more HP overall. But for the guy who has deep pockets and wants every last bit of power or has already built up the motor everywhere else, this can be a good option.

    as far as I understand it from local tuners. Yes the cobra jet manifold does make more power on top end, but you lose lower end torque. Also, the ported 18 makes power in a more steady increase from throttle to red line. The CJ manifold has little down below but peaks out higher. It was suggested for street driving or occasional track use ported 18. For mostly track only us CJ.

      That's usually how the comparison goes between the 18 and the CJ. The guy in the video is being pretty presumptive about what other people claim and it's implications. I've never heard anyone argue the ported 18 makes the same power as a CJ, the argument is usually that it's a better "bang for the buck" in most cases.

Nobody talks about how the cj shits on the 18 above 7k and when cams are involved the difference is even more so.

      Depends almost entirely on the engine underneath it.
      If it's a stock coyote, especially a 1st gen, the cobra jet intake doesn't really do anything and the 18, esp ported, is the way to go.
      If it's a highly modified engine - high compression, racing cams, lots of rpm -then you'll see gains, esp high rpm, with the cj but the ported 18 will still do about 85% of what the cj does and save a ton of money.
      The cj intake does definitely win the looks department.
      Ultimately it's up to you if you want to spend the extra money, almost the price of a turbo system btw, for a high dollar manifold.
      I just went a 10.23 making about 700hp with the stock 18 manifold not even proted, vvt deleted sec gen stock cams and a little boost I don't even shift it that high, like 6800rpm. If I was building an all out, especially NA motor, I'd definitely bite the bullet and go with the cj though but for like 95% of your mustangs out there that just have headers and a tune the 18 manifold is just fine.
      And I still maintain that the best intake manifold for the coyote isn't the cj or the 18, it's the belt-driven one, lol.

Temp was 88 degrees (you said it was "hot") and 60% humidity (historical weather data) @ 10am (time as shown on the dash screen, temp was 96). You also mentioned at the end of the video that the fuel tested @ E70 not E85 because all the 93 was not gone when the E85 was added to the tank. You then stated 460 - 470 is not uncommon with the level of mods on this particular car at the time. So, while it appears your comparing the HP based on JUST intakes, there are far too many variables to take into consideration. In a controlled environment, you'd see different results. Not worth the $$$ IMO. I'll find the 10-15 hp elsewhere and not have to deal with all the BS the Cobra Jet requires to run it.
