    • @onpsxmember
      @onpsxmember 4 года назад +5

      It really depends on the circumstances if that horror scenario happens. If it's used regularly, it won't happen. It does happen when they sit around most of the time, water that seperates from the diesel helps the growth of that crap and if there is lots of air in the tank. So having a diesel sit around for months with very little diesel in it can cause it. If you drive around and it's filled up every once in a while, there won't be a problem. Most people who buy cars with a diesel engine are driving a lot anyway. Great fuel economy, higher efficiency, torque, modern ones won't produce more dirt than gasoline cars. Diesels have a bad rep in the US.
      I wouldn't suggest a diesel engine for just go shopping 3 miles cause the exhaust system needs fumes of higher temperature to clean it up. Longer drive to work not constantly in the city? Having a trailer to pull? Great choice.

You might be better served to ask a mechanic.I agree with what Scotty says but I disagree when he says the cool environment in the tank promotes the growth. From my experience the growth occurs during periods of high temps,the end of summer being the worst.I'm glad that Scotty has delved into a mysterious and opinionated topic. I opened them up, and lo and behold, they were coated with dark green algae slime! After cleaning that off, the engine ran fine, and I drove it 1,000 miles home, stopping midway to clean the filters again. I then had a shop clean out the tank. Here in the U.K. bacterial issues with diesel vehicles are very rare, it is not unknown in diesel boats though. With our fuel prices over 42% of new cars cars were diesels, this has dropped to about 36% recently due to legislation attacking them. In my limited experience the most unreliable parts of modern diesel cars are EGR systems, CATs and DMFs. Turbo diesel cars are not short of power relative to petrol cars of similar displacement but usually great cruisers.

      And fire fighters & road repair crews (both paid by government tax collectors robbing working folks of their money) are now supposed to plan for lithium fires on streets/highways. I can't wait for the coal-powered pickups with lithium batteries to start setting farms/ranches/parks on fire.
      Remember Richard Hammond's Rimac crash? One punctured lithium cell causes a cascade effect that has to be re-suppressed every few hours for a week or more until all the lithium batteries are burned out, and all the extremely toxic byproducts are released into the air/ground.
      The other problem with [non-hybrid] nuclear/coal-powred electric vehicles is that the electric grid simply is not capable of charging enough of them to replace more than about 10% of gasoline/diesel vehicles. Increasing US electrical grid capacity to handle 25% electric replacement of gasoline/diesel vehicles nationwide would require $10TRILLION per year over the next 10 years in grid overhaul, as well as construction of [on average] at least 1 new coal fired power plant per state, or 1 modern nuclear power plant per 5 states.
      Electric cars are cute toys for people with money, and they *could* be feasible sometime in the future. But as it stands now, the power production & storage tech simply lacks the reliability/safety/longevity to make replacement of even half of the gasoline/diesel vehicles in the US possible.
      Side note: Let's also not forget the ridiculous cost of repairs to electric vehicles, and the fact that in order to keep them on the market they all are heavily subsidized by government using money taken from people who can't use them &/or can't afford them.

    • @LordOfSilense
      @LordOfSilense 4 года назад +2

      @@harbingertheheretic3541 Yeah yeah we get it you didn't pass basic economics class and don't understand why big government man is taking away your cash. Fire fighter & road repair have to be prepared for lithium fires anyways. Want to know why? Because regardless of cars on the road using lithium batteries (which they don't actually, but that doesn't fit your narrative) they have to be prepared to handle trucks that transport batteries in the first place.
      The grid only costs 10 trillion dollars to upgrade because it's been neglected leading up to this. If you don't change the oil in your car, fixing your car's transmission and engine will cost more than the oil you were supposed to be replacing in the first place. America has neglected its infrastructure, and because of that, it's extremely costly to have to completely redo a system that was supposed to be upgraded slowly in the first place.
      Electric cars are already feasible, and have been for a long time before companies such as Tesla. The majority of people just don't understand that having a 240v outlet in their house is far more useful than a 120v outlet.
      It doesn't cost a lot to repair electric vehicles, if you passed high school electrics class. Are you the type of person that says it costs $5000 to repair a Prius battery when it really costs $1000 and 3-4 hours of your time? Come on man.
      Any cost the people pay to have electric and hybrid vehicles on the road is made up by that fact that people won't get sick as much due to reduced air pollution. Breathe in trucks rolling coal every day and you'll pay far more in medical bills due to illness in the long term than you would paying to repair that truck. Just because you're too short sighted to understand this doesn't mean it isn't real.

    • @900Yugo
      @900Yugo 4 года назад +1

      @sploofmonkey The batteries in current EV's are made from toxic materials that requires tons of energy to manufacture,use,and dispose. Until better battery makers that don't heavy metals come here,EV's are not going to be common place. I have a friend in Europe that works with the car industry and said that most people in Europe don't drive that far. So the short range in European cars would be a problem here. Batteries don't like the heat so they degrade in extreme tempratures and the fact that every time you charge the battery degrades even more.

    • @jtem9313
      @jtem9313 4 года назад

      @sploofmonkey For WAY less money we could have seriously improved air quality and reduced emissions: Instead of subsidizing EVs we could have subsidized NG conversions on existing cars. And, if we just mandated a new NG pump at every gas station, no infrastructure issues. Done.

      My vw polo 1.2 liter tdi has 418.000 km's on the odo meter that's 260.000 miles. It dosn't consume 1 liter (0.946 qt)of oil on 10.000 km's (6.214miles). Drive it warm slowly, change the oil prematuraly evry 8-10.000 miles. Evry filter afcorse on time what is so cheap and easy to do. And the diesel won't fail you and easaly make a 1.000.000 miles. What scotty is saying about the algy and stuff. Yeah that's treu. Over time there will build up some gunk in the tank and injectors. But they have a solution for that. Namely liqui moly diesel purge 2525. That stuff kills and eats bactereria and algy. It will keep youre injectors clean. Speacialy high pressure injectors are sensitive. But if you clean them on time, youse good quality diesel like we have in the netherlands. You will be just fine.

      What makes you think it's a money pit...? With 978,000 miles you don't think its been a solid truck..? Lol.

    I run a diesel car in the UK. I will often use high grade fuel or a fuel cleaner and don’t let the tank get below a quarter full. Runs perfectly fine. Get 60-70 miles per UK gallon (50 to 60 miles per US gallon) regularly.

    Love your show but I do have a 1981 Mercedes 240d the D is for diesel. This is a tank of a car and it is fun to drive since it has a 4 speed manual transmission. I keep up with regular maintenance.
