Americans are ignorant on fuel. They don’t know diesel is better so they don’t buy them and as such, we have few options here.
@@Me-zi9ex its not our fault diesels are more expensive to purchase as well as more expensive to fix so we have been led to believe they are not as good also didn't help that gms early attempts at diesel cars were colossal failures that barely ran
@@moparjr89 , ok, so 30 years ago, maybe a good excuse. You can’t just say, well, GM diesels suck so they all suck. There have been plenty of crap gassers, but you haven’t stopped driving them have you? Diesels have been far better than their gas counterparts for a while now. I haven’t experienced them being more expensive to fix. Most stuff costs about the same. They also last longer, so you get value back that way too. End of day, Americans are just ignorant on lots of things. They don’t take time to learn about much of anything I’ve noticed.
@@Me-zi9ex even 30+ years ago they where good!! the VW Rabbit NA diesel got almost 60mpg!!! normally mid to high 50s. now it defiantly wasn't going to win any speed setting race, but they might have with a turbo??? I love my 6.7PS its a beast. I also have two old IDI 6.9T trucks and with over 400K on them they still run like new!!

Why do you think the Feds forced Volkswagen to buy back literally millions of diesel cars they'd already sold in America? The domestic auto industry & the US gov't want literally ALL automobiles to be gasoline. If so much as 10% of the cars on American roads become diesels, then it's a threat to the gas car marketplace. People will realize a car equipped with a diesel engine is much more powerful & more reliable than a comparable car with a gas engine. If that trend takes hold, the demand for gasoline cars & for gasoline itself drops DRASTICALLY. "They" want to maintain the current status quo & keep things just the way they are: PROFITABLE. Tangible progress in the form of increased efficiency, increased reliability, & lowered long term operating & repair costs?!?! Oh no, anything but that! ! Don't disturb the balance!
It's like comparing the household light bulb with LEDs. The industry doesn't want to progress toward improved reliability & reduced operating cost for car owners, because it means far less profitability & lost jobs. In a similar fashion industry leaders pushed to delay the development of a newer, brighter LED that would replace the conventional, outdated light bulb. Reducing the average 60 watts per bulb electrical consumption down to 5 times less with an LED (12 watts per bulb) was a major threat to the multi-billion dollar profitability from sales of electricity, for utility companies nationwide. Not only that but it also meant obsolescence of the light bulb. So instead of the American Public having to replace bulbs around the house every 3 months, the major light bulb producers (General Electric, Westinghousr, Sylvania, Philips, etc) could expect 3 or 4 years to pass before the average American would buy bulbs again, in the case of the LED
Never forget just how badly progress really stinks for the greedy. We would've been driving fuel cell powered cars (converting everyday tap water into hydrogen gas & into electricity) & have houses powered by their own windmill, solar cell, & overnight power supply combonations as far back as the 1960s if it weren't for the death grip that Big Oil holds over the entire economy. And it should be very obvious that the auto giants have been their willing conspirators the entire time. Never forget just how badly this sick game is rigged. It is the underlying cause of our ecological/ environmental ruin, incalculable cost to a wide range of animal & plant life, numerous cancers in humans & various other health issues such as asthma & pulmonary disease

i mean steep maintenance costs are a pretty big downside. sure, they’re very reliable engines, but when something finally needs fixing you’re gonna be paying a hefty price unless you’re doing it yourself.

Went Diesel with both our cars, halved our fuel bill.

A friend has a Peugeot Diesel SUV in Ireland, and it gets 66 mpg. Not bad!!
I had in Cali a 505 Peugeot 1985 manual with a XD3T 2.5tdi .. still ran fine with 256,000 miles on it...
My 2004 vw tdi golf gets 67mpg

I have 1ton heavy, meaning a 4500 dodge badged as a 3500 w a 6 speed and 410 gears.i get an average of 22 mpg at 70 mph. Not bad for a 10k pound truck
I had a 1953 Mercedes diesel. It had a four speed on the column and rode like a dream. It would smoke like a chimney but had 3 badges on the grill which meant it had 300,000 miles on it. I sold it to a German for $1,000 more than I paid for it. He said he would get 3 times as much as he paid me when he shipped it and sold it in Germany.
How much did it cost to ship?

@@zackzander425 Unfortunately there is an ongoing crackdown on makers and distributors of parts and accessories to modify diesel engine exhaust systems. Also, many states are passing laws that bar use of modified engines.
IN some states, if a police officer or other traffic enforcement officer so much as sees black smoke from a diesel powered vehicle newer than a 2009 model, they will effect a stop and issue citations.
And in any state that performs emissions inspections, the vehicle will not pass inspection.
@@patersonplankrd Not where I live; only a few counties in my state do emissions inspections and then you can say the vehicle is being kept in another state if you're in one of those counties. Just move out of the Liberal / Progressive shitholes.

We used to run electric construction equipment when doing indoor demolition work, but now they have diesels that are so clean they're certified to run indoors. The diesel is a heck of a lot more powerful too.
Are you sure about that, because I was generally under the impression they use propane engines indoors
My fire department, which I am retired from, has trucks with Detroit Diesel 2 strokes and Cummins 4 stroke diesels. The simplicity of the 2 strokes is appreciated, but those things eat fuel. The Cummins 4 strokes are reliable and use way less fuel.
Yep prettymuch, any 2 stroke is horribly inneficient, especially petrols, the detriot 2 stroke supercharged diesel is the only reliable 2 stroke i have ever seen. And those things have low output anyways, definetly old technology
New common rail engines that are intercooled and turbocharged with variable geometry turbos are definetly the way forward such as modern engines from toyota, john deere, cummins, volvo, mercedes and many more

Silver 8v92ta stock from the factory 450 hp....non turbo 375 hp. Now were talking engines over 40 years old. I had a 671 2 stroke detroit in a chevy pickup that would blow the doors off anything you drove in a 1/4 mile.
Like my 7.3 in my 1990 F250 and the MBE in a 2003 Freightliner. No pollution crap, just power.

MB is taking note, expect a PETROL ENGINE , know of 2 motor vans campers, & for the opoblem of finding DIESEL in some areas, 1 of them used thebGREEN NOZZLE, BUT WAS PETROL , luck ally stopped a 15 gallons, had it towed .

That's actually true and has been known for some time.
Several private vans around where I live are using old frying oil for diesel. The smell is unmistakeable ; like when you use used cooking oil to start a bonfire.

Mr. Kilmer, thank you for this video! As an owner of a 2017 ford super duty with the "scorpion diesel" engine, it helps me understand more about my diesel truck. It is now approching 75,000 miles towing our heavy and long rv 2 to 3 times a month since 3 years ago and counting....I do all the basic maintenance in the middle of the desert or to a store huge parking lot as we travel and work full-time on the road. Again, thank you for your service to the auto community. Take care and looks like you're enjoying your new hometown.....and I'm sure they're lucky to have you around👍🤝.

My diesel tractor starts and runs like a champ, big fan of diesel.
Tractors are one of the uses where diesels make sense. Cars, not so much.
The owner's manual for some of the Mercedes Diesels made in the '60s called for a small % amount of low octane gasoline to be mixed with the Diesel fuel to prevent cold weather jelling.

This is a very informative and unbiased video. I drive an old 12 valve Cummins that never skips a beat and most of the driving I do is on steep slopes and long distances. I've never had more faith in a vehicle or saved that much on fuel, even for a truck built in 1992 with 300k on the engine. Right on Scotty!

Me too I’m from the uk up north Leeds, West Yorkshire, us British Pakistani’s always drive Toyota’s or honda’s, I myself just bought a Yaris diesel turbo D4D 2011 and I love it, costs me £10 a week on fuel to run I love it!!

My old little 1.6 diesel would 1200 miles on 20 us gal. Half of that was veg oil. My 1.6 td van does the same now.

@@jeffreysantos9070 unfortunately here in my state of Commiefornia they have a 60 cent a gallon tax on diesel otherwise it would be cheaper than gas too like it should be. I’ll never buy another gas truck though! Buy what you want. So far it’s still a free country. But for fuel mileage vs torque, you can’t go wrong with a diesel.
My 2010 F250 diesel (DI) will smoke the vast majority of vehicles, cars and trucks, on the road today! My 85 F250 diesel (IDI) is slower than a bicycle but the torque it puts out is incredible!
Most new diesel trucks will smoke that 6.4 and my wife’s scat pack will surely dust it. Also so will just about any Toyota Camry built these days along with loads of other vehicles including all ram trucks with the hemi engines, all Ford trucks with eco boost engines. That 6.4 will break before it can reach the finish line. The worst Diesel engine Ford ever sold!

Probably the best video I feel Scotty has done have watched many and have found error with many. I don’t feel the errors are intentional and we are all human and feel Scotty makes videos to help people learn and understand automotive issues that is commendable.
I gotta say Scotty, I love my 2017 cruze diesel 6 speed manual! My best fuel consumption average on a trip was 63mpg!

Got my first diesel a year ago and I'm now a lifer. The torque alone is addictive as hell and my commute went from two fill-ups in a week to one every ten days.

I was looking at a different truck in 2012. I called my brother for his opinion after owning a 5.9 Cummins truck bought new in 2002. He said "I hauled my 72 GMC to the coast on a trailer to my son's house, used less fuel and drove faster than the old Jimmy ever went". The only down side is the lift pump or electronics on the injector pump usually fail faster than the pump itself. My 99 Cummins bought in 2012 hauls and tows very well. The only bad part is fuel prices since January 20, 2021...
Newer diesels have complex and expensive emissions systems. Buy an older diesel if you want to avoid the repair issues.

I love that diesel cars with manual transmissions don't require to change gears all the time because of the torque that the diesel engine produces at low RPM's
I wish we could GET diesel cars here in the U.S., let alone with a manual transmission!
You should probably get an auto then if you’re not shifting. Or what’s the difference?
Aside from the short power curve on the road not a heap of shifting. In town it's constant shifting. I have a Ram with the G-56 trans and in town it's shift,shift,shift.

I currently own 2 diesel vehicles. My 2016 VW Touareg consistently exceeds 30 mpg and my 2004 6.6 Duramax GMC 2500 HD gets 18 to 20 MPG on the highway. Both vehicles are great for towing too.
2013 VW Golf TDI checking in at 332K miles. Original DPF, 7.5k mile oil change interval, belts+cooling+6spd trans gear oil every 100k miles & I drive like a fckn gorilla. Cheers, Scotty! LOL

13 Jetta TDI, 112K miles, regular maintainance (DSG, I have been sticking to factory service recommendations plus using Stanadyne additive to each tank upon fill up), fingers crossed on the HPFP, drive mostly highway...love the low end torque and the looks from gasoline truck drivers when I pull up to the diesel pump in my little red VW.
diesels need to be thrashed. best for them.dont put put a diesel. just change oil & warm up..
Well my 99 Chevy suburban with 5.7 V8 has 330,000 miles. So there!
My '81 Toyota Land Cruiser has a 3.2L IDI engine. She will turn 40 years old this coming June of 2021. Engine has been through a general overhaul only last 2018. It has clocked around 150,000 miles, not much yet, but prolly could last for another 150,000 miles later on. Toyota makes ultra reliable vehicles.
As a guy who owns a diesel truck, has owned more than one, and have worked around several. I can say that I don't trust any engine more than diesel engines. I've never seen a gas engine do what a diesel engine will do work wise. Also I've never seen a gas engine last like a diesel engine will. Toyota reliability has nothing on a 12 valve Cummins. Toyota makes a great car and I love them, but Ram makes a truck near and dear to my heart
RAM says thank you cummins....we wouldn't be where we are now if not because of cummins and aisin transmission... Our truck will fall apart way before the Cummins and Aisin.
@@j.l.salayao8055 I've got the Cummins and Aisen combo. It's made for a really great truck. I really trust that transmission and have pulled some good sized trailers already and don't sweat it.
@@TruckerMike089 yeah, sounds like you have a great set up. ram cummins was my first choice to pull our rv full-time on the road however, we ended up with the "ferd" ford 6.7l diesel. If I have another chance to go diesel in the future...definitely ram 6.7l cummins with aisin will be my top choice.

My preference & I hate to see them "going away". 👎😠
My UK 2005 Ford 2-litre Mondeo diesel gets 55mpg (UK Gallon). My '98 Passat 1.8-litre petrol gets 34mpg. But, the UK Gov has decided that petrol and diesel car production must stop in 2030, with some exceptions up to 2035. This is despite the glaringly obvious lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles here and the unworkable charge times. The revenue raised on fuel-duty here is colossal, so that loss will be passed on for electric cars to recoup.
@Edmond Schwab 'they' that is the government, can easily stop someone running whatever they decide is no longer acceptable to be driven. In U.K. there is an annual M.O.T. if the car doesn't meet the reg's then it is no longer legally driveable. If you continue to drive it illegally then the driver is no longer insured (a major problem if you hurt yourself or someone else, maybe a family member). If the police stop you then you will be fined or maybe go to prison for repeat offences and the car could be seized. Happily there is no 'grandfather clause' in the U.K. we've mostly moved on from laws based on outright racism.

If it weren't for DPF, SCR, and the massive amount of electronic controls required, diesels would be even more reliable and cost-effective than ever. Instead, they are cleaner than ever . . . . but that doesn't deter some local & state lawmakers from writing unnecessary restrictive anti-diesel idling laws and ordinances.
I agree. Even with an EGR in a 2003 Diesel Audi A4, the AWX engine is running perfect.
Hello Scotty, I am fascinated by cars and this film was amazing. Although I did not learn anything new as it were the basics I think that you did amazing job and this knowledge is easy to comprehend for “normal guys”. P.S. as an European I got Bmw parts much cheaper so those old ones like e39 or some e46 (if they were not destroyed by drifting) and this makes them more reliable. I wonder what brands are cheaper depending on your location, perhaps you may do such a film.

T-34 tanks had v12 diesels powering them and then there are behemoth 2 stroke diesels in ships.
My personal opinion as a truck driver in the US if you buy a diesel it’s because you really need one, putting up with the hassle after 2010 with the DEF systems Too many problems fault codes and as they get older as Scotty says BIG Money 💰 pits. I still enjoyed to hear the old roar of semi trucks and pick up trucks and there are still many of them on the road across the nation 👍🏻
I won't to buy a new diesel due to the electronics, particulate filters and DEF systems. The old mechanical diesels were nearly bulletproof but the new emission controlled diesels are scary if they fail (and a lot of them do). I sold my 1986 log truck to a guy who wanted to go back to a mechanical engine because he had spent $30k on repairs to his 2010 truck and it still didn't run.
@@williamdavidson9009 The same reason I'm replacing my 2008 Dodge 2500 truck with a F350 gas powered truck. The maintenance is getting too expensive and I don't drive the truck enough to justify the diesel. Of course, the supply chain and microchip shortage is having an effect on delivery. I ordered the new truck back in November but I received an email today from Ford telling me it will take longer. I might take delivery by June or July or August of year 202?

OR maybe the electrics will take over? Electrics have great torque! They can also have issues in extreme temps (cold or hot) ... EU electric (truck) test ground!

While I'd want more gas cars here. It's annoying walking a baby with all these diesels engines revving and sounding like noisy trucks.
@Raimonster i used to work in a warehouse in the US, and i remember all our heavy trucks were diésel and they used this additive called DEF i was told this thing helps to avoid Heavy Black smoke and odor but it increases fuel consumption. I don't remember seen these trucks leaving a huge trail of dark smoke at all.
The same reason why Rockefeller bought up the electric trolleys in San Francisco and sold the city fossil fuel burning buses. The EPA has vilified diesels because they are too good in fuel.

Clean fuel clean air and change the oil regularly and diesels will out last two or three gas motors especially if you work them
We had a VW TDI; I was under the impression the oil did not need to be changed as often (10k mi vs 6ishk). Is that wrong?
@@mry82 Ram trucks with the Cummins diesel can run 15 thousand miles between oil changes. The computer tells you when to change.
Some people have their used oil tested to be sure they aren’t over extending the interval. Synthetic oils can go a long way.
Every year when we went to Eastern Europe we rented the exact same sub compact cars. They were Opels. Great cars. The last time we turned the cars in after filling up the gas tanks, we discovered that one of the little cars was a Diesel ! We had NO idea! It sounded the same, it drove the same as the gasoline cars we'd always rented! How could such a small car, powered by a Diesel be so good?
My 04 Diesel truck has really never head problems starting in cold weather. One time it put out white smoke at ambient below 0F, but still started fine.

My first car was a diesel. I’ve owned diesels all my life. There is no substitute for the power, reliability, and torque of diesel power. There are few cars on the road that will outrun a modern diesel from a standstill. And, if maintained, they will last a million miles... trust me.
Ye , but the emissions crap will mess up with in 50000 miles no matter how much you keep your maintenance up
My 2003 7.3L Powerstroke is still going strong, with proper maintenance and additives. 320,000 miles of that beautiful purring. Just had the glow plugs replaced-for the first time! No DEF and all that other bullshite. No catalytic converter, just that beautiful not always subtle smoke to let you know she likes to accelerate from time to time. I do love that truck. Wife is getting bored with it though, my mechanic and about 20 other people want it. We'll see. Nice video.

Absolutely love my ‘97 VW Passat TDI! (B4 gen sedan) On average I get 42 mpg not driving conservatively. At best I’ve gotten 53.1 mpg! Lots of fun with the 5 speed manual and gets around great in the snow here in MT. It’s just best if you plug it in during cold temps. And like Scotty said make sure you put in additive.
Not all diesels have glow plugs. Cummins has a grid heater.
Also, glossed over by Scotty: The glow plugs (and grid heaters) are only used when the engine is cold (just before starting)

I love my old diesel truck. 90’s 7.3l, not fast by any means, or the best of its era, but it has a beautiful sound, it is rapidly approaching half a million miles, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down. The turbo sound and the clacky motor, I just love it.
Don't get behind one and breathe. You can smell so much unburnt fuel. Same deal with the pre-cat Cummins and the Powerstroke 7.3's.

I own 2 diesel vehicles: Arctic Cat 700 Lombardini/Kohler that I turbochargrd and a Ram 4x4 1500 Ecodiesel. Love em both. The 3 ton 4x4 Ram gets better mpg than my girlfriend's Corolla! Yes it's tuned and has gotten 900 + miles on a 26 gallon tank.
I've got a 2002 f250 with a 7.3. Truck has 434,000 miles on it currently and it drives like a dream. Love it and I plan on keeping it for a long long time

Hi Scotty, Great video on Diesel engines, learned some new things. I've been looking into getting a body on frame Suv similar to the 2010 Chevy Tahoe. I know your a diehard Toyota fan but I was wondering how well the powertrains hold up in these compared the the sequia and 4 runner? MPGs are similar it seems or worse in the Toyota's.
Your reference to the train a person who shoveled coal was a fireman. The stoker was in some newer engines it was a worm gear the moved the coal from the tender to the fire box. Also an interesting fact to get water on long runs they had a scoop on the bottom of the engine that they would drop at water locations to pick up water with out stopping
