This interview is displaying elements of why I stopped really paying attention to minimalism. I got into it maybe 8-9 years ago because of the original duo here. I got out of it because of Joshua. I avidly listened to their original podcast, but it got so tiring to hear Joshua basically rephrase his same talking points, same stories, same sentiments, no matter what question was asked of him. Meanwhile, Ryan came off as actively listening and actively responding to the questions and scenarios posed to him, just speaking with the lense of minimalism in mind, rather than Joshua's tendency to paraphrasing his own philosophy. And Ryan did not talk NEARLY as much as Joshua. I ran out of things to learn from Joshua, and didn't get enough from Ryan to feel the time spend listening to the podcast was worth it anymore. Ryan has the conversational feel that I needed after I was familiar with the basics, and Joshua felt like a professor whose class I was taking for the 6th time. If you're familiar with the Minimalists, everything Joshua says in here will feel TOO FAMILIAR.

I started listening to them when they had their TED talk and omg they have been saying word for word the same thing since. The same sales pitch for years and i don't understand how they haven't changed it or realized it's weird to quote yourself for 10 years.

It’s part of JFM’s grift. He offers barely anything new because the message is simply “own less” or something like that. But because he’s made Minimalism something to make money from, he’s got to repackage the message to keep making money.

I only found their stuff a few months ago and I like TK take on things . I agree Joshua is a broken record at this point. I wouldn't buy anything from them because I feel like it would just be repackaged of what they have already said .

I think running and lifting weights solves a lot in life... As far as Minimalism, it's just like religion, people keep going every week even though the message is the same. IT has become digital religion. they are even dressed like monks, or like your at the Apple Store. I would sum up minimalism as things to remove, relocate or things to keep that you need. It's ok to have stuff. Also RUclips influencers are making so much, so much money. They won't talk about that... Ask them, how much money do they make dressed in black shirts. Hope there not like the corrupt priests in Texas that then jet off in private jets to Beverly Hills, laughing all the way

The minimalists changed my life over 8 years ago. They were very kind and graceful to do this with you because the original video wasn’t about minimalism and what they strive for, it was about people who are extremists and take everything to an unhealthy level. Completely different topics. You come to my house and there’s no clutter. I have what i need, what i use or things that are beautiful| meaningful. I can tell you where to find every little thing because everything has a place. My car, office, bathroom, garage are uncluttered. Husband is the same. We consider ourselves mininimalists nor extreme or compulsive. People who have an issue with this movement took it to a literal “own nothing” and that’s the problem… Minimalism isn’t.

When that minimalism documentary came out, I was so broke and didn’t buy things anyway…so I remember feeling angry like, so people figured out how to capitalize on not buying things. Coolcoolcoolcool. But as I advanced in my income there were some things I took in from minimalism that I’m grateful about. I don’t just buy things just to buy them. My room is full of gifts from my friends and handmade gifts or things I made. I value my time over a paycheck so I don’t aim to work more than 40-45 hours a week. I’m not good at staying off the socials but I have lessened the time to make space for me to do more fulfilling things. Minimalism has some good points, and though people take things too far, I still kind of like the philosophy of minimalism.

    HI!
Love your video's. I'm Dutch and we live a lot smaller over here. So I always (wel atleast the last 10/15 years) like to declutter and tidy my house. For me minimalism is not having to much things you don't use. I personely I don't get why minimalism is associated with having no collors (maybe it looks cleaner)? I love collors and I have a lot of it in my home and my wardrobe. I think what's being said in the video is realy spot on and i realy think it's important to give youre own spin on lifestyles that your interested in. (don't take it so serious).
I also thought it was interesting what you said about history and that there was always waves of minimalisme. We have a lot of left overs from Calvinisme. Greetz from Holland! ( sorry for any spelling mistakes)

Im very poor, enlightened but poor, and us poor people are unbelievably great at not having much. How much of this is an issue of over exposure to hyper consumerism, that we in the united stateshave to have some kind of academic style of conversation over something most of the people in the world and people like me in the u.s, have zero problem accomplishing. That is not having much and knowing how much is enough and necessary, and inflation helps this alot. Also how much of this nonsense is about the acquisition of status?

. . . not in my neck of the woods. I'm from Michigan and poor people here are the biggest dollar store creatures - packing as much into a $20 dollar bill as possible and don't even talk about clearance sale reactions. If a shampoo is .95 cents, then they buy 5 maybe more, and that action applies to everything in a store. Maybe old school poor people were better at it, before marketing was the slickest biz in the country, perhaps now in the world.

@@gaslitworldf.melissab2897 I'm old and grew up in Savannah Georgia. I know you're right but not 100 percent, for the u.s at least, that humility can still be seen. As for the rest of the world, the percentage, I imagine, is a lot better.

I think it is “ programming “ the masses to want less. Like with the “ Capsule Wardrobe” in clothes as well.
People don’t realise they are “ programmed” in almost everything in life.
I could delve deeper but here is not the place to explain much
    Thanks Donna 😘💪🏻

The toxic thing with the capsule wardrobe. Is that people want it to be perfect to end up buying more so they have the right items and then the trend changes so you have to replace the items again .

Thank you for making such a well put together video and very well spoken video!
I also know its going to be an awesome watch when I see Donna in my notifications!
Also I think social media has been quite damaging to alot of groups of people from minimalistic living to diet/ beauty culture.
What really scares me is talking to my younger cousins and family members since they have a very damaged view on Money (they all say 1million usd Is chump change) (even though they max have $20 themselves)
Also I noticed the younger generation is demonizing the working class aswell! 😢 my nephew was upset as his dad since unlike Mr.tate he couldn't afford a rainbow flag of Bugattis.
I really hope the next generation can make it through, but with how bad society is sadly I think we will see a major war 1st before it gets better 😢

Yeah I started feeling that vibe once the first guy clarified he wasn't a communist, that there wouldn't be a strong enough deconstruction of capitalism and colonialism.
Plus ee really blame social media as a tool of consumerism and clutter, but I've used it to connect to other Indigenous people. Although everyone has their issues on social media if they engage, I find there's some very intuitive and peaceful and helpful ways indigenous people use social media to share and preserve knowledge that aren't feeding into consumerism or attention economy.
