The Whittaker’s story went viral back in 2020 when photographer Mark Laita, interviewed the family at their home. The video touched many and spurred successful GoFundMes to aid the family with their living expenses. However, a RUclipsr by the name of Tyler Olivera recently scrutinized the legitimacy of the charity, questioning Mark’s honor. While Mark did fire back with receipts, the headache of the drama caused him to pull back from the family. Many now accuse Olivera of ruining the Whittaker’s lives, all to clout-chase and to make a sensationalist video.

Huge Tyler fan, only due to brevity sake of his videos. He also seems to have a great unbiased stance and sparks conversation. However I totally agree with your points, and the manipulation of his "Whittaker" video felt a tad tantrum based. Both individuals are doing great work though and I love seeing the middle-ground "mother" role you continuously seemed to subconsciously add to the fire!! Your videos are wonderful, we live in crazy & wild times, we need this kind of content to just feel human again, and to not be drowned in the new age white noise.
Tyler calls Mark out, he challenges Mark’s honor and then goes on to praising himself for buying them some groceries and some coloring books. All that when all he had to do was ASK Mark where the money was at. He’s a slimy snake.
Mark’s given them more than $10k out of his own pocket, and outside of the GoFundMe accounts. Just because he truly cares about the family and wants to help how he can. Like he says, their lives have been way better since Mark came into it.

You have to check state laws. But most state laws state that you can give 10 grand as a gift. And it's not taxed. It is blatantly obvious that this was all for sensationalism. And I'm glad Mark is walking away. You're narcissistic stance on this is truly disgusting.

A weird thing about Tyler's video is that he pushes into places he has no permission to be in...and keeps filming. Then when asked to stop, he talks later as if that person was a Karen, as if he literally didn't just TRESPASS ONTO THEIR PROPERTY.

It’s been memed on and over used that it has no real impact or effect anymore. Someone gets cancelled and in 3 days people forget and are on to their nice target.

I've watched both channels. I have no issues with Tylers conspiracy theory investigations. But the Whittakers are people who just need some help and I believe Mark is a good guy who has honestly tried to help. Ive grown up in poverty lost both parents to drugs, got run over by a car breaking my back changing my life forever, got hooked on opiates from the doctors got off of opiates, live in constant pain. Would I let Tyler interview me? No. Would I let Mark? I think I would

I got hooked by injury, too. Congrats getting off them! I had to go on suboxone, but I get pain control (a little) , but I feel like a slave to it.

I have a problem with conspiracy theories if they defame and slander someone, which is exactly what Tyler did. He accused Mark of substantial fraud, which didn’t happen, and that in itself is a literal crime of slander and defamation. He destroyed Mark’s reputation for his own gain.
I have been on pain medication for over 30 years. It allows me to do and be more active in life. Why don’t you just except chronic pain and stay on your pain meds and live a little? There is no harm in opioids if you take them carefully.
One of the pieces of advice I hear over and over, more than daily, as a volunteer is "take care of yourself first, you cannot help anyone if you get burned out." If category 3 people start collapsing, we don't just lose volunteers we lose the people they were taking care of. It's serious, every animal shelter, food bank, warming center, clinic, has been critically understaffed for around 3 years. Regular volunteering especially has been waning, I see so many new faces and very few regular ones. Part of it is that new volunteers are coming in slower, but from my perspective the bigger hit is the rate at which volunteers are burning out. 10 years ago I would volunteer weekly and had maybe a few traumatizing incidents a year. During the pandemic that exploded, and I left my volunteer positions of years due to finally reaching my breaking point. It wasn't just me, we lost volunteers we had had for decades. Now that I am coming back I am shocked to find the turnover rate is still at pandemic rates, that regular volunteers are run ragged, that burnout and snapping is becoming commonplace and people are trying to push through it. I am very worried for category 3, and all the people they take care of.

I struggle with burnout too. Ive been donating blood products regularly but the incessant calls have made it exhausting. I don't want to go in any more because ill get 5 calls a day sometimes asking when im setting up my next appointment.
@@dismurrart6648 The blood donation calls have been really awful the last few years. Before i'd get calls like "we're doing a drive near you, here's the date and time" and it was fine. I actually had to block the Red Cross phone number during the pandemic, I also got half a dozen calls every single day.

I think one thing about the Whittaker's others aren't noticing or mentioning is once Mark and the money started coming around long lost relatives were there everytime. I think these relatives were spending a lot of the money. Also, i don't think people realize that they have no one looking out for them with their money.

The problem with buying the house is that the Whittakers don’t want to move from the neighborhood they live in. A house was found that would work, but the cost for that house is over $200k. Not the cheap houses that were referenced. Mark has taken care of the family (often out of his own pocket) and has given them money whenever they asked for it, to the tune of $100k in just over a year. Any time he has withheld information was to protect the family from being exploited and abused.
I think Tyler butted into something that was not his business. Mark was trying to help these people and turns out that they only used him and were not even grateful for everything he did for them.
One or two slightly more abled family have used Betty really badly.

I believe Mark is sincere in trying to help these people and the interviewees who need it on his channel. The problem is Mark is not a trained therapist, drug counselor or social service professional. I spent years volunteering at a shelter for battered women. The professionals in charge of the program trained us in the very specific protocols for interacting with the various situations and persons. One thing that hit me when I started was being told most of these women were not going to leave their abusers, even with counseling. They would keep cycling through the shelter. Many also put their abusers ahead of their children. And we were told to make them do things for themselves and their children because many will try to manipulate you to do everything for them. Also, do not give or lend them money. In hind-site Mark should have consulted some professionals and set up a trust with a third party administrator/accountant before giving the Whittaker’s all that money. It would have provided guidance for him and the Whittaker’s. Instead he did what many of us are inclined to do which is approach this from our own experience.

I’ve seen Tyler’s channel, but only because he entered my algorithm after his encounter with Brett (whatever his last name is) at that haunted hotel. In hindsight, knowing what we know of Tyler now, I don’t wonder if he wasn’t stalking Brett to jump off his large audience (or those who disliked him). His recent Bohemian Grove antics show he has no ethical boundaries around his chase for perceived success.

I have MANY more important things to focus on in my life. I am from Appalachia and some of my family were coal miners in the cumberland mountains area. My uncle who was the father figure in my life was a coal miner and also worked on the rail road building the train tracks through Appalachia. I grew up with 1 box fan to keep the whole 3 bedroom house "cool" in the summer and one coal stove to keep it "warm" in the winter. 15 feet away from the stove and it was already chilly. The back two bedrooms were closed off during the winter because it got as cold in there as it did outside. The blocks in the old house had cracks in them that literally let enough sunlight through to keep the house lit up in the day time. So I know the culture VERY well. The truth is, this family is a bottomless pit of needs and wants.
I know it has made many people famous, a lot of money and has been quite the spectacle. I'm not sure any true help is being given or can be given. They’re a product of their environment. A small amount of help actually helps, otherwise, they’re a family that has never had money, wealth, or fame. They’ve never been able to manage a dollar. The help given to them is actually harmful.

All of Mark's content comes across as exploitative. He finds people who are at their lowest & desperate for cash. If they were in their right minds, they'd never agree to being filmed at rock bottom.

I do agree that a lot of this is the effect of them being fully isolated and basically forgotten by the state. The biggest issue I have is that a Go Fundme for a house should not be used for anything but a house. He was sending the family money whenever they asked and wasting it instead of telling them it had to be used for the house as planned. He let them waste all their income.
A big lump sum/getting a home would make them ineligible for state benefits.
All I’m seeing are two sets of people ultimately exploiting a troubled, struggling family for profit, no matter how much “help” they provide in attempts to counter-balance that. I rarely see these types of channels calling for systemic/societal changes that would help address poverty, substance abuse, mental health, affordable housing, etc. at a large scale. I don’t see any of these channels addressing the unresolved childhood trauma that is often the root cause of individuals’ struggles. The minimal work that is done to humanize or destigmatize a struggling subject is often undone in a subsequent video when the individual hasn’t “improved” enough for the audience’s satisfaction. This entire picture is distorted and it needs to continue to be called out by those of us who know better.

As a nurse that grew up in southeast Louisiana. There are lots of rural areas that a great part of the population is living way below the poverty level. I feel Mark did a wonderful thing for this family. They have lived in the same area and house all of their lives, two of them have passed away. The remaining are Micheal Stevie is 64, Judy Kay is 65, Larry is 68 and Betty is 72. Let them do whatever makes them happy, in my personal opinion has given them some joy to their lives. He has the documentation of what the money was used for. Tyler Oliveria was doing this for views. In my line work, sometimes you have to imagine yourself it this situation. Mark sits and have conversations with the people that the general public doesn't even make eye contact with.
I have a friend that grew up on public housing, 8 kids, immigrants all with different fathers. The family was poor and on welfare. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. That same person looks down on other that needs public assistance. And here I am, black, grew up in the south. My family owned their own home on two acres. we had private pay insurance, I had two siblings and both parents, I think Let them spend on whatever that makes them happy.

Betty looked angry at Mark as he walked up. When he confronted Betty she said, "Larry aint' dead!" you need to see the video... After that video we Mark's faithful appreciators and fans said NO MORE WHITTAKERS!!! He just needs to walk away from all the lies and betrayal and move forward. And he has done just that.

my folks have a 'sister church' in rural Guatemala, it's an ELC (A) - a progressive, leftist Lutheran church - and it's pretty clear that asking people what they WANT is way more helpful than getting them what YOU would want. they're fine with their bathrooms, they _want_ (and would therefore _actually use,_ which should be the point) a community kitchen at the church, which they all use daily. it's not like they WASTED the money, they spent a lot of it on home repairs... in rural areas, a car is _imperative,_ and the 4 wheeler is an off-road car that's less expensive than a truck. smh Mark did the right thing

The sad point is the money wasn’t held for a new house. Next was putting the addict lady in rehab whether she wanted it or not. Or cutting her off financially . Why weren’t they under government supervision to helping them like so many others there are? I’ve been there, I know the situation.
