My favorite band. Jerry (guitarist) wrote it about his father. Between his guitar work and Layne's voice.... perfection.
No chit sherlock
Welcome to the Alice in Chains rabbit hole.
Jerry wrote this song about his dad's experience in Vietnam. His dad suffered alot of trauma and as a result he lost the relationship he had with his son. When Jerry showed the song to his dad he asked "Did I get close to the vibe and mindset of being there?" and his dad said "You got too close". It was this song that rekindled their relationship. At live shows they used to bring his dad onstage before they played Rooster.
This should be a disclaimer on the video, truly great tidbit about a fantastic song
The guitarist wrote this about his dad. He had issues after he got back from the war. His nickname in vietnam was Rooster
I had this album 15 years before I ever seen this video- I was blown away- pretty intense.
He was a machine gunner which is were "they come to snuff the rooster" is relevant. His job was laying down a lot of suppression fire so taking him out was a priority.
Most everyone in vietnam got nicknames. My uncle's nickname was deputy dog. Later shortened to just dog
This song came out 27 years ago and it still gives me chills.
I’m sitting here with goosebumps about today the same. Timeless perfection 💜🎵💜
27 years ago ? But I'm still 17 ! Someone lied to me ?
"You missed the starting gun... "
more relevant now than when it came out
I get tears. Every time.
A masterclass in songwritnw.
Layne Staley was for one of the greatest vocalists in history and that took Alice in chains and grunge to another level. Rooster is a true symbol of the genre and the depth and complexity of the lyrics goes beyond the name. Anyone who has served in the military or is a war veteran identifies with this song. I can't help crying every time I hear it.
More AIC, please!!!
Jerry's father was Rooster..."Here they come to snuff the Rooster...you know, he ain't gonna die..."
The PTSD that many vets suffer is from the trauma of constantly being in danger or watching people die, particularly if you knew the person, but seeing anyone die is traumatizing. They also additionally can have physical wounds, survivor's guilt, anxiety and depression. They can see themselves as unredeemable, especially if they are deeply religious. Just offer to be there and listen, 33 vets a day commit suicide or at least that was the stat last I checked.
Jerry's father was in the Vietnam war. He wrote this song for his dad's experience. His dad Mr. Cantrell nick name in the war was Rooster. Between Jerry and Layne this song is bad ass! Layne is the best male vocalist of the time and all time IMO!! Rest in peace Layne and Mike!
This is about Jerrys father who was a Vietnam vet.
I'm 70 years old and was in Vietnam a total of 39 months all combat duty, I was only 23 years old when I came home, forever scared by my experiences even today the memories linger, war is not the answer,
Only they know what they go through. We can only imagine.
One of the best descriptions of war ever. It's impossible to know the demons people experience. Two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan for me.
This was Viet Nam. You didn't have a choice. You had to go. Want to or not. All war sucks. But this one..........Messed up a lot of young men.
You forgot that there were some "Fortunate Son"s...
I remember the first time I watched this clip. My jaw hit the floor. I was like 13. Mum was a nurse in Vietnam. She won't talk about it
Bleed The Freak (official HD video)!!!! that ones insaneeee. Their other great songs to react to are Man In The Box, Would, Down In A Hole
Jerry's (guitarist) dad served. That was his dad - the Rooster - at the beginning.
Nice work Dean Bros, I'd forgotten how intense the video is, great song - you're right about the way a lot of vets were treated when they came home.
Well said, guys! Great reaction!
Another comment for reaction suggestions...
Would?, Rain When I Die, Nutshell, Man in the Box, Down in a Hole, Love Hate Love (Live from the Moore). A lot of people are going to suggest stuff from their MTV Unplugged. While I love that show, I don't recommend them for reactions. Layne (lead vocalist) was pretty destroyed by heroin at that point, and his vocals weren't what they used to be.
For more Layne vocals, he was in a supergroup called Mad Season. "River of Deceit" and "Wake Up" are both amazing from that.
I agree
The lead singer in that video, Layne Staley, died of an overdose. The current singer does a decent job but It's impossible to replace Layne Staley.
His voice was so mournful
Yeah I appreciate keeping the band alive, but Layne is one of a kind.
@@brendak4291 sooooo right.
My dad earned the bronze Star in Vietnam. He enlisted before they could draft him, so he could pick his speciality... paratrooper. He was a senior in high school. He parachuted behind enemy lines to scout positions, he lost many friends doing this. He was also a tumble rat, he was a small guy, that went into booby trapped tunnels to gather any Intel left behind. My father came home to a nation that hated him. He threw all of his medals into the river after the VA failed to help him. My father was never the same. Unable to hold a job, alcoholic and traumatized. Made sure he had a military funeral, with all the honors when I lost him. They owed him that. I made sure he was honored. We owed him that.
One of the best bands of the 90s. Listen to the following by Alice in Chains:
Would
Angry Chair
Down in a Hole
Man in the Box
No Excuses
Nutshell (Unplugged version)
I Stay Away
Heaven Beside You
Them Bones
Jerry Cantrell Jr. (guitarist) wrote this for his father who served in the Vietnam war. Jerry's family split because of the scars the war left on his father and they were estranged for a while. He wrote this song in an attempt to reach out to his dad. When he asked his dad if he got close to what he went through in war his father said 'you got too close'. Father and son did rebuild their relationship and Jerry's very proud of this song and his father.
A classic.
It makes me feel good you guys have respect for veterans. This album came out right after I got out of the military.
The guitarist /backup vocalist’s dad served. Not Jerry Cantrell, but his father, the guy who they interviewed at the beginning of the video. These guys are my age and too young to have been in the Vietnam war in fact, we were born during the Vietnam conflict. And I admire your support of our military.
3:51 Army green was no safe bet.
20 yr Vet Retired here, great reaction guys!!! Blessings~
My buddy pulled 2 tours in Vietnam. It messed him up. Nightmares, PTSD, the works. A lot of guys said it would have been better to have died there than come home and live with the aftermath. My buddy died last year. RIP Stanley. Republic Of Vietnam 1968-70
I'm glad you guys respect the military like you do.its the bravery of these men and women who let us be free.REMEMBER,ALL GAVE SOME,SOME GAVE ALL.
My favorite grunge band of all time and one of my favorite bands of all time. Y’all should react to Them Bones next🤘🏼🔥
My stepfather was in the Marines, he had ptsd for years! It wasn't a petty sight, although he had a purple heart, he had to watch so many friends die, even some in his arms. Full RESPECT should be given to everyone in our Military. They've Earned it! Peace and Love to you all!
My son is recon marine sniper and I appreciate these comments! Love Alice in Chains and oohrah! Love the channel and Rage Against the Machine reactions too!
Love Hate Love live at the Moore...shows what a voice he had!! Incredible!! He is so missed. ✌❤
Awesome reaction support y’all thank you for the appreciative words about veterans they really do fight for us
Alice in chains has so many great songs their music is timeless. Don't sleep on this band I promise you'll have several great reactions. Keep listening and keep up the good work.
"Would" is their best tune
That’s subjective. Would doesn’t even make my top 10 😂
I have so many comments I could make on this post as an old soldier but I love the reaction and the question y’all have
loved it man yall gave a great reaction to it!! happy holidays Dean bros fam!!:)
just the clip pictures directly from 90's, what a period in music
I greatly appreciate your realization that you can support the soldiers while opposing the policy that placed them there.
War is hell, and once you get into LIVE combat situations and how it really is, its a tough thing to deal with--not everyone can deal with it.
you should react to love hate love by alice in chains, especially the live performance at the moore
What a great voice Layne Staley had. R.I.P
Please put some captions on Dawgies!
Awesome band and awesome reaction , a couple of my favs ' Love , Hate , Love ' and ' Dont Follow' .
Well well, we have gotten to Alice In Chains...enjoy. They had everything, including the tragic ending. Watch every video you can, they were amazing. Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Nirvana...Alice In Chains. Put on your flannel and have fun.
I had an 'Instructor' (1981-83) @ US Army Academy of Health Sciences Fort Sam Houston. We used to call him "Scrotum Neck" because the Skin & Muscle on the back of his neck was twisted and gouged all over the place. Close to the 'End Of Cycle Training' he came into the Barracks and gathered us all around and took off his hat and shirts, spread out his arms and turn around nice & slow for all of us to see.. His ENTIRE back looked like it had been through a freaking 'Meat Grinder'.. The MAN was literally 'Scarred' from the top backside of his neck all the way past his 'Beltline' and around his midsection.
He told us "Some of you may end up in 'Combat' and I PRAY none of you young men will have to go through being 'Napalmed' ". Needless to say we ALL ST8 felt like the 'Scum Of The Earth' for making 'Jokes' about him behind his back..
He said he was only wearing his thin O.D. Green 'T Shirt' at the time and it just melted away as he and his 'Buddies' tried to wipe it off the Napalm that just stuck to their hands and pulled layers of skin off his back when they tried.. Said it was "Like Sticky FIRE Jelly" and would not simply wipe off.
Out of all of my memories from 30+ yrs ago during 'Training & Learning & through
That is the most 'Embedded' memory that i have of my time in the United States Military.
I THANK ALL the Men & Women that have EVER 'Served' and those that 'Will Serve'..
NOT all of us former Military went to War, but we ALL fully knew that 'PTSD WAR Memories' may happen to each and every 1 of us at any given time.
I Thank God that i personally never had to 'Endure' such..
Much love and respect for ya'll. You get it and aren't scared to speak it. Keep it going.
Amazing (word not used lightly) song.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
You kids are great guys...You give me vast hope and make us older guys proud to see you got your heads on straight and know how to play the make it in the world. Cheers
"I Watched My Friends Die."
I heard that numerous times from my parents generation who were in Vietnam. It didn't really hit me until I was given more details when I got a couple close relatives deep into the bottle. My old man didn't tell me that the only other grunt who took him under his wing, and started teaching him how to survive in the 'Nam, died right in front of him within a few weeks. Nobody else wanted to befriend him, thinking he'd died soon anyway, but this one guy did. And my old man watched him get shot to hell, jumping out of their hole and moving forward because he was the first of two, right in front of him. Stories like that have weight, given first-hand.
Anyway, this song always reminds me of my old Vietnam vet dad. Plus my uncle, and their friends back in the life. I certainly had a different upbringing than some.
Jerry's dad never spoke of the war until this one time.
His father went to see AIC performance. AIC sang this song and his dad broke down..... crazy what our soldiers go through and the country treats them like CRAP. Supposedly Jerry's dad was nicknamed the Rooster because of his red hair. One of the greatest bands of the 90"s
Thank you for saying you support our veterans. They really appreciate that.
I've watched other reaction videos by a few other people and never commented. I enjoyed your reactions to both the music and singing as well as the video it self. The respect that you have for our armed forces made me feel nothing but respect for the both of you. I've listened to this band for years. You'll have to check out more tunes by them. Hitting that subscribe button now. :)
The thing you have to remember about a lot of Vietnam vets is that they didn't volunteer for that, they were drafted and had no choice.
Both of you are really good outstanding young men i lost a cuzin in Iraq he was doing his 2nd tour i really appreciate what Both of you stand for it gives me hope 🙏 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This song captures the emotions of facing death and destruction in the Vietnam war. Now you might understand PTSD. You had to be there.......actually better to be blessedly spared from that mess. Watch the movie Apocalypse Now......”I love the smell of napalm in the morning”.
the Vietnam War was during the draft. you had no choice you went to war or you went to prison.
Unless you were female.
@@UltraViolent21 Or Bernie Sanders, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Clinton, Ted Nugent, etc. etc.
@@floydhill9265 and Ted is my friend. Don’t try to tell me about him. I eat dinner with him. He is an amazing man that you don’t want to fuck with.
@@UltraViolent21 not trying to, Ted Nugent admitted in a 1977 High Times Magazine interview that he intentionally crapped himself to fail the Medical, ask him
@@floydhill9265 I’m aware.
That black and white with a man talking is the rooster that was his nickname in the army as he was growing up he made this song for his dad and they weren’t on good terms and this brought them back together his father was in the audience when they played it And his father started to cry and that’s when they became real good buddies again so the song was made for his father which was Jerry Cantrell the guitarist And the lead singer his inspiration and good friend was prince he picked a lot up off of Prince
Alice & chains there will never be a band like them. The best.
a solider if possible always makes sure a brother never dies alone.. he will be there with them at their side.
You guys are great young men. Keep it up
This song hits hard for kids who's dad went to ' Nam. My dad rarely talks about it and me and my brothers hardly ask either
In a world where kids are taught to hate our country, it's nice to see young kids showing respect for our military.
Thanks for honoring n respecting the military. God bless you n your family🙏
btw, you guys did a great reaction on this. Thank you guys for your honest reaction.
Love you guys good to see young people understanding history.
What a fucking voice man. Holy Shit!!!!! Here, here comes the Rooster..YEAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Ya got a sub from your respect for our guys... man keep goin
Every song on the album Dirt is a classic. They could do no wrong on that album. You should keep going for sure.
Great reaction to one of the very best songs of the 90s and ever in my opinion!
yes sir, the old man was jerry cantrell's father, who served in vietnam , & he was nicknamed "the rooster", he made it back alive, & in houston texas, was my electrical superintendant, I'm an electrician, in my 60's, was an old rock n roll singer myself, 82nd airbourne, & he of course when I asked him, he did'nt like talkin' about it much, may god bless his soul, in jesus ' name...........
React to Alice In Chains-. Down In A Hole. I think you guys would like it.
You are both wise beyond your years!
🤘🤘❤🤘🤘😁✌🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Oh Yeah!!!!! Some Alice in Chains!!!! Soooooooo good. He was such an iconic voice!!!!!
I'm with you guys...those that serve are braver men than I. Nothing but respect to our service members
Great reaction!! More Alice in Chains!! ✌❤
Look into the more recent alice in chains songs as well. This band is still putting out great music. They are my favorite band always.
Support the men and women who fought, and died for this country!
Welcome to the AIC family fellas
There was a psychological study that had concluded that the reason you get a song stuck in your head is because you cannot remember the ending of the song. They conclude that in order to get the song out of your head is to find the end of the song.
The producers of this album had heard about that study.... so that is why the beginning of many Alice in Chain songs sound familiar to the end --- so that you CAN'T find the end of the song!
Savvy!
You're right! My family on my dad's side is almost all military in one way or another! The horror stories that was their normal life is crazy! My younger brother beat my ass because he was in a flashback and I was just trying to fend him off enough to realize it was me. I ended up with a broken nose, a busted head, and black eyes and a swollen face before he snapped back into reality and realized he wasn't back in the battle but in fact here in the states. You don't come back the same after going into that! There isn't enough support for them and what they go through! Not even close to enough support!
My brother went to a therapist after he and I had our altercation and got to where he could handle it but it took him doing to someone he cared about (me) before he realised it was a problem. You never know how it's going to affect them!
Layne Staley one of the best front man voices ever
The old man served
So happy to see you 2 appreciate the military!! Alice in chains is AWESOME!!!, Love love LAYNE STALEY, lead singer RIP to him.
Thank you gentlemen for the video you provided, us troops think happened put upon us in our past. We literally sit here waiting for a war. We have trained to such an extent that war is the only thing we wish for. I am a marine corps vet, yet all I think about is about the next war. I cannot speak for all vets, but all of my buddies who I know are waiting
Yes post traumatic stress is a huge issue with combat vets.
Nice classic boyz...💪🍺
I know you have seen or heard of "PTSD" (Post traumatic stress disorder) . Many veterans who have served end up with PTSD at some point.
God Bless Our Veterans, and all our military men and women serving today. Keep them safe Lord!
You guys need to do Alice In chain unplugged (live show) frogs, down in a hole or nutshell. Truly amazing performance.
if you guys want to see some military related songs, you should start with a reaction to "Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch......lots of facts there you probably never knew and a great song. And guys....you don't know what you are capable of until you are put into certain situations. My husband and I both are combat veterans. We love our country and do what is necessary to preserve its integrity.
One of their best songs and one of the best songs ever in general is “nutshell”
It’s a sad one tho
This song should be incrypted on next space probe gold disc
Hard to recommend other songs after an emotional video like this but MTV unplugged down in a hole and nutshell are unreal.
I was ready to give up on you Youngbloods. Listen I g to Motley Crue, Twisted Sister.... B.S.
THIS is ROCK!
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote Rooster about his father's experiences in Vietnam and when Jerry saw his dad in the audience at one of their shows when AIC opened for Iggy Pop, and Jerry asked Layne (and the guys) to play Rooster and they did. It was the first time Jerry's dad heard Jerry's music and knew that his son understood him through that song. It brought Jerry and his dad closer together. And Layne had a vital part in that reunion. (Meanwhile Layne's own biological father was an opportunist).
Jerry's dad was nicknamed Rooster when he was a kid and his hairstyle resembled that of a rooster comb. Although, maybe he used rooster as a call sign during his military career. But he didn't earn the nickname in the military, he had the nickname back when he was a kid.
Jerry Cantrell, Sr had multiple tours in Vietnam and like most Vietnam vets, he didn't talk about it. The most he ever said about it was at the beginning of the official video for Rooster which he agreed to be a part of after hearing the song. Like all kids who hate their parents, Jerry Cantrell was no different. He was staying in a small guest room in Chris Cornell's house (Cornell was married to AIC manager Susan Silver) and the guest room had a tiny window. He was staying there and thought about what his dad may have experienced and wrote the lyrics.
They demoed Rooster and Would? when they spent two days working on the acoustic songs for the SAP EP. The songs on SAP and those two songs were demoed using the money Cameron Crowe gave them for recording Would? for the SINGLES movie.
The harmony in the beginning and end on the album is Ann Wilson of Heart, but Layne does the harmonies on the official video and live versions perfectly.
Layne Staley sang the hell out of Rooster (and Would?) in the official video and album. When they toured on the Dirt album, the way Layne sang Rooster in Tillburg, The Netherlands in 1993... about 2 minutes and 5 seconds into the song Jerry missed a chord and Layne looked over at him like "Dude! WTFH was that?", but then Layne let loose and his "yeahs" and screams were so clear and loud, I'm surprised the rafters didn't come crashing down around him.
Knowing how he sang Rooster in Tilburg, The Netherlands, in 1993 when his “yeahs” and screams were so loud and high I’m surprised the rafters didn’t come crashing down around him and then watch him sing the same song so low-key on Unplugged knowing he could do to the song what he did in Tilburg is heartbreaking. Knowing he initially sang the hell out of Would? on the official video and album and seeing the end of Would? on Unplugged . . . and knowing how deep into his addiction he had gotten by that point is heartbreaking.
That line "they spit on me in my homeland." TV News anchor Walter Kronkite basically told the American public that we lost the war and between that and the college kids (who went to college to escape being drafted into the military) would protest the soldiers coming home. They would do protest rallies at the airports and protest the returning soldiers by spitting at them, throwing urine and other stuff on them. An uncle of mine drove a supply truck in Vietnam (to this day he won't talk about his experience). A family friend of ours said that he and his buddies came home, saw the protesters at the airport, and re-enlisted because it was safer in Vietnam than in the US with the protesters. At least in Vietnam, they knew who the enemy was. I'm NOT saying Vietnam was anything the US should have ever been in. I'm just relating stories of people I know who served there.
My Top 20 AIC songs... Love Hate Love (Live at the Moore, December 1990...Layne Staley in his prime and is UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION performed live by a rock band. All other rock bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect), Man in the Box (Live at Weedsport, NY 1991 - the Layne’s Pissed Version...though the original version may be better to react to, because Weedsport was during Clash of the Titans tour where Slayer fans were giving the band crap and Layne got pissed and changed the lyrics), Bleed the Freak (Live at the Moore, December 1990), It Ain’t Like That (if you need a video use Singles Pro Shot video), Queen of the Rodeo (Live in Dallas, TX 1990), Real Thing (Live ANYWHERE), Them Bones, God Smack (Live at Hollywood Rock, 1993), Grind, Again, No Excuses, Brush Away, Frogs, Sludge Factory (During MTV Unplugged 1996, Layne screwed up the 2nd verse like 8 times, though the show only included one of those times), What the Hell Have I, God Am, Got Me Wrong, Swing On This, Social Parasite, We Die Young
RIP Layne Staley...one of a kind
Everyone else has given you the background of the song, so I’ll skip that and go straight to a suggestion. Check out the song “Love, hate, love” live at the Moore theater. You really get a sense of how powerful Layne vocals are in that live version of the song. My absolute favorite band, and Jerry Cantrell is my all time favorite guitarist.
Waiting for you to go down the rabbit hole
