Layne I wish some how we could have helped you . RIP
This song right here is what brought millions over to grunge metal !! I love this song, bought the tape the day it came out. I was in the Army at the time and man we jammed this every chance we got all of us. Only color in the Army is green. RIP Layne Staley ......
Not sure if you know but sadly the lead singer Layne Staley passed away from a heroin overdose back in 2002 (on the 5th marks 19 years that we lost him), he was only 34, his story and how he died are so tragic, truly one of a kind RIP
Don't forget the bass player Mike Starr also passed away.
Rest in peace my brother. . Layne.. Seattle hasn't forgotten you..
And mike
Nor has ALABAMA
Yo Alice in Chains got mad hits. "Down in a hole", "Would", "Rooster". Check them all out.
HELL YEAH IM DEFINITELY REACTING TO THEM MORE
Agreed
@@DeanBros Them Bones and Your Decision are two more.
@@DeanBros Man you two need to watch It's Going Down and Papercut by Linkin Park as soon as possible and watch the videos for both also One Step Closer,In The End,Burn It Down also watch the video for Remember The Name by Fort Minor.
these are their mainstream songs, every alice in chains song is a bop
RIP Mike & Layne 😔
Their song “Rooster” is a must- official video- please- Rooster is a nickname and that’s all I’ll say for now- 💞✌️
BEST SONG EVER! My fav anyway...lol
That guitar solo was fire
Jerry Cantrell is one my favorite guitarist
According to Layne Staley, the singer, this is about the media and censorship. He wrote it while high. I've also heard it's about animal cruelty. Need to do this one and Love Hate Love from Live at The Moore. His vocals are off the chain. ✌❤🤘
You are Correct...
Jerry's been in our family so long ,the family connection is so deep. We've never asked anything from each other than our time we've spent together. What a fun time we've had at our family reunions in the past ! We played a game of horseshoes where the losers had to walk like a duck to their stake and back to ours. Damn it man .....,we lost LMFAO ..What a great memory!!!
And I just wanted to say how cool it is to see this new generation be exposed to and appreciating music from the past. Doesn't even seem that long ago but hard to believe it's been 30 years since this dropped. Where does the time go
I'm entertained by kids discovering 80's Glam and Metal plus the 90's grunge. They think it's so awesome. Not to me. That was my generation's music. Even the 80's Top 40 puts today's music to shame.
This is the Edited version, it makes the song different, he says i'm the man in the box, Buried in my shit! like he is a neglected kid that has nowhere to go to the bathroom, then later in the song he says i'm the dog that gets beat, shove my nose in shit! like his parents violently shove his face in his own shit for not holding it in.. it's a song about neglect and forgotten people treated in horrible ways that nobody really sees and what it is like to be in that situation
No... fake news... .. he said it was about censorship by his record label...
Their new lead singer is really awesome. Didn't think he would be... I was wrong learned something new.
This song got me hooked on this band!! Listened to it daily. ❣️
I FEEL IN LOVE WITH THE VOCALS LOL
That man, may he RIP, had 10 voices inside him. Huge range and depth.
This is a treasure for us all, you are in the presence of greatness here💯
Listen to “Don’t Follow” it’s hands down my favorite Alice in Chains song. Incredible!!
Oh yeah I've always said that's the song I want played at my funeral it's got that hauntingly beautiful Vibe to it some of the best vocals you've ever heard and a gorgeous harmonica overtone. Goodshit your real fan obviously
@@ThaDude-ci1zk yeah man! The way the tempo changes and Layne comes in with the power vocals, it gives me chills every time!!
Agreed. For me it’s the most beautiful song they made both lyrically and instrumentally. Peace.
That and Nutshell.
For sure it's a must. Don't follow!
Layne's most impressive performance; Love Hate Love live at the Moore, his most poignant performance; Down in a Hole from Unplugged.
Agreed
Listen to Rooster
Yessss!
He (Layne) was at a restaurant and overheard someone talking about how baby calves are treated to get veal from them and sees a similarity to how the media was treating AIC at the time, not really a good explanation but you get it
“I don’t know what all he’s saying but I like his voice”
Welcome to grunge lol
I was about your age when this song exploded onto MTV in the early 90's. Been a fan since day one!! Had to stop and watch it every time it came on. Alice in Chains is pure 🔥🔥🔥
I am the Man in the box...!!! 😁
Crank it up!!!
👍👍👍
Seeing this live at Lollapalooza 93, one of the craziest mosh pits I've witnessed. The whole place (75,000 in attendance) went nuts. Never seen a first aid centre so full with bodies after AIC's set. RIP Layne and Mike.
Alice in Chains is Amazing! Check out some of there other songs like - It aint like that, Would, I stay away, Love hate love, We die Young, Them Bones. Are just a few of there greatest hits
I wanna thank ECW for introducing this song to me, along with a lot of Grunge and Heavy Metal I otherwise would have missed
Tommy Dreamer was the Goat of ECW
ECW!ECW,ECW,ECW!!!!!
when i was young and they were current, i felt that AIC were too slow and ponderous, yet as i have aged, i appreciate them very much.
Sewn them shut, resonates with our times of calculated division right now. We cannot comply to division, we love each other.
Definitely one of the greatest guitar riffs of the '90s. Haven't heard anything as good since then actually.
With all due respect to Cornell, Cobain and Vedder, Layne had the best voice of the bunch.
Man in the Box was released in Jan or '91. I imagine that was before y'all were born. Crazy. Singer, Layne Staley is passed on now. Mike Starr on bass has passed on too. Alice in Chains was one of the first grunge bands that came out of Seattle back in that time. Please check out some more of thier stuff. Certainly the MTV unplugged show. All of it. Thanks
Facelift and Dirt are 2 of my favorite albums. Love some Chains!
Alice in chains is the greatest band ever
ECW! Wrestler Tommy Dreamer's entrance theme from the 1990s to 2001! ECW was a hardcore wrestling organization! The initials stood for Extreme Championship Wrestling! Although in the version Tommy Dreamer used for his theme song it says shit instead of pit and spit!
Y'all gotta do Would by Alice In Chains awesome songs
PLEASE go further down the Alice In Chains rabbithole! So many great songs.
It's so nice to see young people enjoy Alice in Chains!! 👍🤘❤️
Music with feeling. Check out there hits. Lots of great harmonies in their songs and great music.
As others have said, the song "Would" is really good and so is their song "Rooster". Great group.
I love watching reactions to this song, this reaction is definitely one of the best
He actually passed away and his mom had his ashes literally put in a box. Saw it on Dr Drews rehab.....He'll always be the man in the box.
You can’t go wrong with any music from Chains. R.I.P
This song came out 31 years ago!! Pure greatest!! Layne is a Rock God!!!
This video hit and held number one on Mtv for a minute 🔥
HELL YEAH!!
I saw them in concert before the singer died. He was an amazing vocalist.
"Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries, will be wasted" .. ..... Layne was a man crying out to Jesus .
"Man in the box" Is basically a cry for help. Along with a majority of their other songs ie: Rooster, Down in a hole, Nutshell and Don't Follow.
My co worker whom was a huge "Chains"
fan had a copy of the police report related to Layne Staleys death ...
Stated when they enter they seen him on the sofa the subject was obviously deceased indicating he had probably been there for some time...
Sad ending to a unique vocal talent
Jesus Christ that boy could sing.
Rest in peace Layne..
And Chris
And Kurt
And Shannon
And lord please protect Eddie...🙏🙏🙏
When layne screamed feed my eyes.... my eyes were fed!!! He need sum milk
Well this one is my fav from this band. The bass line alone....great song ! Enjoy 🤘😎
One of the best voices I’ve ever heard
Alice in Chains (AiC) were part of a huge grunge movement from Seattle, Washington. Personally, I believe they were part of a "Big 4" movement likened to the thrash metal movement in California a few years prior. The grunge "Big 4" was "Nirvana, Soundgarden, AiC, and Pearl Jam" (although Stone Temple Pilots came later, I would put them in as a 5th option (even though I prefer STP to Pearl Jam....but that's irrelevant)) but Alice in Chains (to me, at least) was the epitome of "real life drama" in a world where "grunge" was meant to be "dramatic" lyrically. I might be biased....as I have two tattoos based off of AiC...(soon to be three)...but they were the most "real" out of the bunch.
Sorry for all of the parentheses and quotations.
Loved the reaction, great job guys
That chorus is fire, Layne is missed.
Thanks for reacting! This is one of my favorite hits from them. Livy, He's the man in the box buried in his pit won't you come and save him? Sounds like a depression/suicidal complex.
I love y'all loving Alice in Chains. So glad that you appreciate this!
The band says that it's about censorship with animal cruelty as a metaphor. The Man in the box is like a caged veal calf
Layne one of the best front man voices ever
My favorite band. This was high school. Layne's voice was epic. Jerry, while not the most technically great guitarist... his solos were fantastic.
Now check out "Would" by Alice In Chains
I will add my voice that you must listen to ROOSTER. This song jams!! Loved ur reaction to it 😁
My favorite band ever. So many high school and college memories with their songs
they have a ton of great songs especially their Unplugged songs
But what it's basically about is, is how government and media control the public's perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home, ya know. And it's just about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you.[11]
Thank you for reacting to my favorite band. If you love Layne Staley's vocals you have to check out "Love, Hate, Love" live version from the Moore. One of the greatest live performances ever.
The singer layne was really stoned and wrote this song about censorship. Now let’s go down the Alice In Chains rabbit hole!
More AIC please.. Rain when I die is a must
I'm the man in the box
Buried in my shit
Won't you come and save me
Save me
Feed my eyes (Can you sew them shut)
Jesus Christ (Deny your maker)
He who tries (Will be wasted)
Feed my eyes (Now you've sewn them shut)
I'm the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in shit
Won't you come and save me
Save me
Feed my eyes (Can you sew them shut)
Jesus Christ (Deny your maker)
He who tries (Will be wasted)
Feed my eyes (Now you've sewn them shut)
Feed my eyes (Can you sew them shut)
Jesus Christ (Deny your maker)
He who tries (Will be wasted)
Feed my eyes (Now you've sewn them shut)
RIP Layne. Alice in Chains was the best grunge band of the 90s.
Great band. Love your reactions.❤️ love unique voices. This song is about wanting to be saved from the crap he has surrounded himself with. lol
Still singing "shit" instead of "spit" even with the edited version. It makes more sense using that term anyway. My top grunge band
One of my favorite band. Listen to The Stone roses to.
Will do brother
Rotten apple , is the best song of understanding layne staley , along with his other band mad season ...it delves more into his struggles with life and addiction
He said..."that got creepy "
..lol
Check out their entire "Dirt" album
FINALLY!!!!!!
A few other 'Alice in Chains' you should react to are "Rain When I Die".. "Would"... "Them Bones"... "Sea Of Sorrow"... "Down In A Hole"... "Dam That River"... RIP Layne Staley
“Rooster!”
Alice In Chains has several good hits!! The lead singer may have been one of the greatest leads of all-time, but it didn't last long enough to really put him on the map!! But the next AIC song you play will give you the same chills and feeling of greatness as this one did!!
Y’all are so cute. You’ll be rocking out in your 60’s like me and my man! ✌️
Oh you definitely have to check out their song Again
Yes young lady Layne was amazingly talented , gorgeous and had the most beautiful blonde hair. If I remember correctly this song is about censorship of there music.
You should try Kansas-Leftoverture, En Vouge-Free your Mind, Ted Nugent-Stranglehold, Sammy Hagar-I can't drive 55
MTV Unplugged Alice and Chains Nutshell! The most hauntingly beautiful song and it's my #2 all time favorite right behind Pearl Jam's MTV Unplugged performance of Black!
Love hate love by Alice in chains live. Fucking amazing vocal performance
I always liked rooster Nazareth Hair of the dog
LOVE everything Layne! RIP
SongFacts: This song is about censorship, with animal cruelty used as a metaphor. The "man in the box" is like a veal calf trapped in confinement.
ROOSTER is a banger!!
Im a Dean brother too for real lmao. Thats my last name. Man Alice in Chains has a ton of great songs to react to. Their fans are fanatical to say the least. I know because I have been one since this album dropped. This song is not even the top 5 on that album lol. When it came out, this was their "commercial" type song.
Jerry Cantrell is a VERY underrated guitarist.
Welcome to the genius of Alice in Chains. Check out ' Them Bones, Would and What the Hell Have I for bangers from this band
Try angry chair by them...it Rocks ❤️
Not even close to their best stuff, but still great. The whole album Dirt is a frickin' masterpiece. I refer you to the comments.
Just noticed there wasn't an explanation of the song. Both Jerry and Layne have attributed it to media/artistic censorship which makes the video ironic given that he censors two words, actually one word twice spit instead of shit and sings spit quite forcefully compared to the rest of the line to make sure it is noticed.
The box seems to have divergent meanings to Layne and Jerry. Layne talks about having dinner with friends and discussing the fate of calves raised for veal, so the song is from the point of view of the calf raised in a small box. However, Layne talked a lot of crap in interviews, he clearly had a mischievous streak. It seemed like a game to see what he could get people to believe or say on air, so I am not sure I would give anything he said in interviews that much weight.
Jerry seemed to have a more serious take on the 'Man in the Box,' discussing how government or other questionable sources are 'putting people into boxes' by spewing propaganda and misinformation via media. May seem pretentious, but then again CNN was launched in 1980, but did not really find their feet until 1990 (the 1st Gulf War), thereby paving the way for others. Many people had concerns* about what a 24 hour a day, everyday news cycle would mean for society about this time and this song was released in 1991, so the sentiment has a lot of bearing on what the general consensus at the time was. How long can they credibly claim they have no interest in swaying or at least manipulating public opinion when they need to keep their attention and interest. Boring news stories 24 hours a day was not going to cut it, it is over saturation in the extreme driving the need to sensationalize the mundane and drum up stories to fill time/attract viewers does not make a comfortable bedfellow for unbiased or responsible news stories.
* concerns such as; How would the platform be utilized and by what type of interests. How would they draw their revenue (meaning, if they are chasing the same funding [advertising] as other [entertainment] programming, how long would it be before they started to act more like an entertainment channel instead of of a news & information channel.
Love hate love
One of my favorite bands when I was in high school. So many great hits. If u guys want to hear the lead singers true range and amazing voice then listen to I STAY AWAY. Great song. But they have many. Sadly the music world lost another icon way too soon when the lead singer passed away. Rest in peace Layne Staley. U are so missed 😢
Check out Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog.
I Stay Away is a beautiful piece by The Brady's Maid in Bondage(Alice in Chains).
RIP Layne Staley original singer for Alice in chains
Iconic vocals and a badass lyricist. I wish he had been able to overcome his addiction struggle, but it is what it is.
Same band, "Nutshell" unplugged, MTV
