    I always wondered why eastern monks were not friendly when I have greeted them in UK. I have been practicing western buddhism for over 20 years.

    • @Sunnanandi
      @Sunnanandi 2 года назад +2

      The apparent indifference shown by monks when lay people greet them in the proper, respectful way with the Triple Bow is because such a show of respect makes good Khamma for the lay person and if the monk were to acknowledge their Triple Bow, that act would take the place of the good karma from the layperson.
      Therefore any apparent indifference from a monk is actually helpful to the layperson when they offer respect. This is how Buddhism is practised in the East and is well understood by the lay community.

      Monks are supposed to be celibate, they don't have children generally, as that creates attatchment, they practice semen retention.

    • @Sunnanandi
      @Sunnanandi 2 года назад +1

      Buddhist monks are encouraged to respect their parents and are allowed to visit them in case of sickness, death or other major events affecting their families.
      Bear in mind that monks are renunciants who have forsaken the bright lights of city life for the silence of the forest, so it is rather disruptive for such communities to allow unrestricted coming and going, especially of non residents, but days are regularly set aside for visitors, with relatives of monks and those bringing gifts of food being especially welcome.

      It’s more like the norm.All man in Thailand are expected to become a monk for some time in their life(usually 3 month).The reason is we believe it is the way to repay our parents for our life in this world(and also for raising us).most people do it just for the norm some want to seek enlightenment.

    Hi everyone who really interested.
    There are some incorrect or not clear enough answers in this video.
    1. Monks shave head and eyebrows in order to renunciation of secular life, every month, in more strict temple - even twice a month.
    2. The correct name of Buddhism in South-East Asia and Sri-Lanka - Theravada, not Hinayana. Last one considered as incorrect.
    3. According to monks' regulations in Theravada monks can't have any deal with money! Even no touch. It must be special lay person, who manages this question and, if it's necessary, supply community by buying smth.
    4. As well as any deal with women - no touch, no give or take smth hand-to-hand, no stay along even for five minutes talking.
    Sadhu.

    "when you drink alcohol you cannot control your mind" hmmm it seems like buddhism monks have an attachement to want to allways control the mind, but they preach to let go of attachements.without letting it be free for a few hours . i think buddha was against intoxicants because people get addicted and they cannot ever control the mind but i think he would agree that a monk taking alcohol once a year or so would be helpfull to see what the mind is like when unleashed . i feel like monks in modern days are too focused on rituals and rules and buddha said to allways question those rules and traditions . buddha left his first teacher the brahmans because they were too focused on rituals and rules but now buddhist monks are onlyu focused on rituals and rules and not self inquiery and nuance . i think buddha would be ashamed of what his teachings have turned into . he was against rituals and rules he said that his teachings were not to be held n to that they are a raft that takes you to the other side of the river and is not meant to be clinged to . you can see this by the fact that he became enlightened when he stopped starving himself for his essetic lifestile and decided to eat. he realised that the rituals take us so far but if we cling to them we become slaves to them as much as we are slaves to samsara and suffering . i feel like lay people that follow the buddhas words but dont cling to them are closer to buddhas dharma than some monks . i think being a monk should be a transitional thing where you learn the teachings but then you should live life according to the teachings not just stay a monk for life because that is called clinging and attachement .

      I think your view of attachment is a little bit different of the way I understand Buddhism. When you drunk, you lose control but most importantly your senses and awareness. That's what he's talking about. He doesn't mean 'control' in that attachment sense, but more of the awareness of your mind. Buddhist practicing foundation is to be aware of your emotions and don't let them control you. Because if you let your emotion control you instead of controling them. They tend to lead you into attachments and suffering. You let your sadness control you. You will try to find things that will ease you of your sadness and if it is succeed you will attach to them. You let your happiness and joy control you without awareness. You will addict to them because of their nature. That is what the great teacher (Buddha) discovered, The cause of suffering is attachment. One of the cause of attachment is the lack of emotion awareness within one-self. If the interview was done in his own langguage, I believe that the message would be more accurate to what he is trying to say.

      @@energyvampire7831 I agree, everything in life is subjective, wherever there is light there is darkness, whenever we look for happiness that means that suffering exists, if we don't look for happiness then suffering wont exist. if I said that this food is tasty then that means there's food that's not tasty, but the reason people would drink alcohol is to get some sort of satisfaction, but that means they’re not satisfied or happy before drinking. people who drink, and anything that we do for satisfaction, we get attached and sometimes acustemed to it. if you are already happy then there is no reason to drink or look for happiness, as once that happiness finish all that's left is suffering and then it continues to loop. Budhist monks strive for nirvana/enlightenment but if they drink they will lose their Consciousness and lose to the mind, since our minds are our biggest enemy, if we keep looking for these short spurts of happiness we will never find eternal peace. I'm still only 17 and just trying to understand this Science but I agree with you 100%.

      Avoidance of "drink and drugs which are the cause of carelessness" is one of the Five Precepts which serious Buddhist lay followers recite every day.
      Ordained members of the Buddha Dhamma Sangha also ascribe to the same Precept.
      The reason should be obvious: Buddhists meditate to gain the insight and clarity that is required for enlightenment and intoxicants cannot help that objective in any way. There is also the point that intoxicants can also break down self control and thus increase the possibility of other Precepts also being transgressed.
