    I bought that new in 2002 after shooting film for 30 years. If I recall correctly it was $7200-7300 USD! My experience wasn't quite as enjoyable as yours. Moiré was usually present in repeating patterns, and it was really noisy with any low light exposures longer than 10 seconds. I convinced a resort’s out of state ad agency to shoot digital since I had just bought the beast, even though they selected me based on my film portfolio. I shot tethered to my Apple laptop using the Canon software, because that's all there was. The computer Kernal Panic crashed while the art director was looking at it, all while twilight was fading. I sold it as soon as the 1Ds was available and jumped ship. I felt that was already an improvement. Then went through all the 5D series as they were announced. Loving my R5’s nowadays. A positive for the 1D is that the latest Lightroom Classic renders my DNG files from that camera WAY better than the OG Canon software did. That’s been my main reason to always shoot raw. I can revisit older files and usually get much better results from reprocessing. It would probably be better with current glass too. Thanks for your modern perspective. It’s good to see it through another person’s fresh eyes.

    This was my first 1D camera. Loved it. Was sad when my teachers found out I was using this camera for my senior portfolio that they told me to get a new camera right away. Should have kept it and never told them what I was using. I've been moving a step up each time since and currently with the 1DX. Loved each and every one of them. The III was the best jump of them all. Wish I had the 1DX II for the better video. Enjoy it while you can with the batteries it has.

      To add to that, sort of shocked to see so many job listings say they want someone with one particular brand or type of camera. Just a strange idea to head hunt based off of gear, when otherwise it would normally be the qualifications or portfolio that they're interested in.

    I’m so glad that someone is getting excited about old DSLRs today. Makes me want to pick up my 1Ds mkII again to shoot. I noticed you wanting a split prism focusing screen, and it’s actually one of the few modern cameras (film or digital) that has optional factory split prism screen. You want the EC-B screen, quite a rare option as it sacrifices spot metering capability on a camera with incredible AF, but they are more readily than the chargers. Also worth mentioning there are some real hit and miss issues on those third party battery charging ports. I had to modify my battery very carefully as bending a pin would be catastrophically expensive. Irony is they are essentially just a sealed set of 8x1.25 AA size batteries inside each of those NP-E3 batteries, if you feel brave I believe the EOS-1nRS uses the same battery with a different end plate, and also came with a AA battery caddy which might make a good alternative way of powering first and second gen 1D series cameras.

    I own the 1Ds, and aside from the difference in sensor size, it is nearly identical to the camera in the video. I wholeheartedly agree with you that it is a fantastic camera, and the layout and tactile experience are some of the reasons why I adore playing with these older cameras.

    I am fairly new to Canon Digital. My first DSLR was, and I, still own the Nikon D200 which is also CCD. Short version, I bought a Sony a6000 then a Sony A7II mirrorless. Loved the tech and the small size. Then my employer at the time supplied me a Canon 5DMKIV, I quickly got used to it, fell in love with L glass and the ergonomics! Bought my own 5dIV and I came across a 1DsMKIII. The 1Ds MKIII blows me away, it is my favorite digital camera. The colors are just great to me! Yes, the camera body is a joy to hold and operate. I am going to stockpile parts just to get more life out of it when the time comes. So happy to have found this channel!!! I have yet to find other photographers that understands how great the old Canon DSLR’s are still.

    I remember way back when, I was living in Charlotte, NC and Canon had a real nice gathering one evening with refreshments where they showed off their new products and the 1D was the showcase item. I remember the very large prints they had on display from the 1D and I was in awe. I really, really wanted one but I couldn't afford the price point back then. I had just started a new job and also went through a break-up that left me in a financial hole for a while. I had to wait a while before I eventually picked up an Olympus E-1. It wasn't until the Canon 1D MKIIn came out that I could finally afford a Canon flagship body. I've been rocking Canon cameras ever since for my professional work. I still prefer my Oly gear for my personal stuff but there's no question Canon had huge advantages with its bodies and lenses, though. I wish I could have gotten the CCD model of the 1D series. That would have been awesome. Back then, we didn't know CCD was going to be a thing in the years ahead. But I did notice that I never liked the colors from CMOS sensors near as much as those from CCDs.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  Год назад +4

      I love this story. Thank you for sharing. It really is wild how CCD has become a thing, isn't it? I suppose it is inevitable that with the success of a universal like CMOS, everything would start to look the same and that is where CCD has now become so valuable as a differentiator. But rest assured CMOS will become exotic at some point in the future and we'll all be pining for an old Sony :P

    Amazing review! I buyed mi 1D MK1 almost 13 years ago and I loved it since day one... at that time I had a 1D MkII that was stolen in Stockholm so I kept the charger but I lost all my batteries too... it was kept in a shelf for many years until I could find an used battery and the camera is running strong again... its a beauty beast indeed! I was able to change settings using an old Macintosh software in an old Mac laptop... thank you!!! greetings from Mexico. Hello from the UK. First thing I have to say is I love your channel and reviews. I revel in your true enthusiasm. I definitely share your love for the Canon 1D. It's a superbly engineered beast, that's a true joy to use. I also have the full Nikon D1 Series ( D1, D1H and two D1X's ). Here in the UK you can often pick then up for under £100.00. The Canon 1D, I picked up for £49.00 !!!!. The pictures from it definitely proves that multiple megapixels aren't the be-all and end-all. If used within it's parameters, no one will be disappointed. Keep up the excellent reviews.. Patrick

    Thank you for the video. As per my observations; the yearning for older model DSLRs are getting louder and louder these days.
    I bought the last iteration of this APS-H DSLR Canon 1D Mark IV fourteen months ago which has a CMOS sensor. It has been my dream camera since long. Naturally got it used however, it had exactly the same shutter count that the vendor (B&H) claimed. It was 42k.
    If things go well, this camera should give service to a hobbyist wildlife shooter like me for many years. I love it and won’t ever sell it. Needless to mention; I’m never going mirrorless due to its EVF-lag, ergonomics and poor battery life.
    As per my rating; Canon 1DIV is superior to even 1dxIII and R3 in some ways. Because, its focal length reaches out 30% more than those two cameras. Its burst rate of 10 fps is good enough for me. The IQ is great due to its large pixels which would translate to approximately 27 mp on a full-frame sensor. Large enough pixels to produce clear images which the camera actually does. That’s why, I’ve recently resolved for myself to use only APS-H and FF DSLRs for my wildlife and landscape photography purposes.
    Thanks again.

    @OneMonthTwoCameras --- it took several weeks + obsessive detective work (and maybe a tiny bit of luck) -- I finally own this amazing DSLR!! I have the Canon A1100is (JPEGs) and the Canon G9 (Raw/JPEG) and both have CCD sensors. The color is amazing and the look is what I lovingly refer to as "digital film" --- but I felt limited by the wide angles and zooming inwards never really gave me the results I wanted. After searching "Canon CCD" just to see what RUclips would pull, I came across your channel and this video. (I've watched it quite a few times.) Thank You for introducing me to this amazing Camera. I still have my 5D MkIV which is the last DSLR from Canon before it has gone mirrorless. I am intending to hold on to it until it (or I) dies. Its used price has come down quite a bit. The biggest gripe I have against it, though, is the fact there is no magnification function in image review mode. The viewfinder is big enough to allow manual focus even with the stock focusing screen, but not being able to tell if my focus was off when shooting manual glass is my biggest bummer with this beast of a camera.

    I love your channel, as an avid enthusiast as well. I, however, do not feel the same about this camera as you, beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. I agree with focusing speed and build quality, but I feel the Nikon D200 and even the 5d mki delivered better results, granted the 5d is not CCD. my hierarchy of CCDs are 1 - S5 pro, 2 - D200 ,3 - Olympus E400 , 4- Pentax K100d and the the 1d Mk1. I feel there's a lot of emotional connection to this camera which might be why there's a bit more bias toward it. Nobody is right or wrong :-)

    Unicorn is right. Everyone I find is usually really in bad shape, or not working. I would love to try one. CCD have their own personality. Not sure why I find these so abused, if I find it at all. I have an old Olympus E10 from 2000 that still works. When the polymer battery gives up I know it is done. Slow as sin, great colors, noise can be an issue if you push it, but in its element, I still like it. I shoot a Canon 6D I got used. I want to try a 1D but it is hard to find that special one that isn't in bad shape. I am a casual hobbyist from the Canon AE-1 days. I shot all kinds of cameras and settled with Canon, and Sony. I do more video than stills but to capture the outdoors is my thing mostly. Only thing on the 1D is weight. It is a chunk of camera for sure. I would only use EF glass anyway. I am not a lens hound anyway, just the glass I need keeping cost inline. I found a vendor that I use that sells used, and reasonable, and with 6 month warranty too. I don't trust Ebay that much. I have been lucky, but that one time Ebay burns me, wow that would be sad. I had found an oldie 1D family starting about $500.00 with reasonable actuation count for its age. I just don't want one that looks like it was dropped out of an airplane at 30,000 feet. I am patient, and deliberate in action. Fun to see your experience here. Cheers.

    Happy New Year Ali, what a cool first review of the year! It seems like Canon was able to do some incredible things with that sensor, maybe because it was lower res (by modern standards)? I’m thinking like the 1/500th flash sync, the 1/16000 shutter speed(!), that generous buffer size, good noise performance… just sounds incredible honestly. Nothing else has that, and I wonder if that’s because with an APSH sensor and 4MP, it was possible to readout the whole sensor faster. My Canon experience is mostly with the 5D II, which I started out with but lacks in every area compared with the 1D except resolution and video… still love mine though! I also have the EOS 3 film body, and definitely see the 1V / 1N / 3 heritage in those button combos to adjust features-the EOS 3 has a bunch of those. On that note, the images look sooo filmic! I love your example pictures for this one. EF glass plus CCD colors is heavenly, at least when you have somebody who knows what they’re doing behind the lens ;)
