The 5 liter Cummins V8 was originally intended for Ram's smaller 1500, but FCA decided in favor of the more efficient (FCA) 3.0 Ecodiesel instead. Cummins had already invested so much time and money into R and D for their 5 liter diesel that it only made sense to put it in something else and that’s where Nissan came in. Just so happens Nissan was working on a Titan XD which slots somewhere between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton truck and this 5 liter diesel was perfect.

Cummins made the engine. Word on the street is that it was going to go into the ram 1500 ecodiesel but did not get good enough fuel ratings. This engine would have been produced with or without a Ram/Nissan deal. The Cummins ISV 5.0L V8 is also used in some BlueBird busses and Tiffin Allegro Motorhomes. The busses and motor homes both ran a different turbo setup than the Nissans got but basically the same motor otherwise. My best guess is they did not sell like anyone had hoped for. At the time this engine was being developed the US was also stricting emissions standards on all diesel engines. I am more than happy with my stock 2016 XD diesel 150k miles.

I was towing a trailer from Alaska to Kansas in one instance and my DEF system decided to fail near Edmonton, leaving my wife and I stranded in a foreign country for a week. Before that trip, the truck had been serviced five times for DEF injector failures and EGT valve problems.

The salesman I talked to said the same thing would happen, people would come look, see the sticker and go buy a Ford. There was supposedly a diesel Titan Work truck that would have a 40k price point, but that dealer couldn't get an allocation that included the work truck, it had to be ordered. Why does a heavier duty frame mean it needs to be upgraded, especially given all the other parts are half ton rated?

Actually, the frame is the same as 1 ton trucks. Rakes are larger than a 1 ton, rear end is the same as the Ram 1 ton as well as the Aisin transmission . It’s a 2b class 7400 lb truck. But yeah, it’s an odd puppy lol. It was meant to fit above a 1/2 ton.

bought a 2023 5.6 L gas XD after doing a lot of research. appearantly not enough though as I see they have an issue w/ # 7 cylinder scoring in cold climates (search Titan Talk) affter about 40K miles. They supposedly fixed that in 2021 but cannot find out what they did and troubles are sporadically coming up in 2022. They say those are engines made in 21.. so who knows. I only have 4K miles and will live with my decision. I have had no issues and speak to other gen 2 Titan owners and have had only good things to say

Last year, when I was in the market, I looked a used Titan with the Cummins diesel, but the sticker shock was stupid. I ended up buying a BRAND NEW F150 with a 5.0L V8 for about $25000 less than the Titan. That's why Nissan is failing at dominating the truck market.
