I've lived in edinburgh all my life, what you said was pretty accurate. It's pronouced "edin-bruh" tho
Thanks! So true about the pronunciation although we sometimes feel like posers trying to pronounce things colloquially so we defaulted to the American pronunciation.
Ask an American to pronounce Melbourne, Australia. :-) Guaranteed they won't get that one right.
We really appreciate the feedback and letting us at ExpatsEverywhere know we did the city justice. Josh and Kalie will give you a shout out on their next Review/Preview video, which is looking like it'll be Jerusalem (Great Expat City starting with the letter "J") so be on the look out for that.
We appreciate you!
@@ExpatsEverywhere awww cool thank you! Your pronounciation wasn't far off tbh better than any american I've heard. And yeah you guys really research these cities, I'm a student and everyone just shares a flat paying 450-550 a month so youre right
Woooo! We're going to try to pronounce it properly in our shout out to you so be on the lookout! :-) Thanks for the feedback regarding the flat sharing price range. We really try to do our homework to make it easy for people to watch a 6-10 minute video and become more well informed than having to slog through the Internet to find information. We also rely on our network of expats living in these various cities. ;-)
We can't wait to see what you think of our attempt at Edin-bruh.
@@emmakelly3354 You're clearly not studying English!
@@MrKeithblair Language is not set in stone. I studied linguistics and found out that language is whatever you want it to be, its your personal tool to communicate in unique ways. Accent has always changed the way prescriptive language is spoken so it's not a problem
This was a pretty fantastic video covering many different topics!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ExpatsEverywhere you didnae inform yer subscribers that Edinburger is riddled with Tadgers and Wee Bams
Thanks for putting that info out on how easy it is to move to the UK and we’re full up now best to keep quiet about some Things
8:35 thanx for the shout out dude really nice and informative videos.
Lamp Camper Again, thank you. We love connecting with our audience and hearing from you guys. Let us know if there’s any content that you’re looking for specifically and we’ll try to source it.
Well researched! Thanks both of you ✌🏽
Thank you very much.
Really appreciate this video. I’m looking to move to Scotland to attend the University of Edinburgh next year for my masters. I’ve only ever lived in Ohio besides a short stint in Florida. Trying to plan everything out now so I’m not freaking out in the summer. I should be graduating in June and hope to move soon after. If you are still responding to comments, how soon should I start the paper work process? I plan on being there for two years, but may stay longer if I can find work in my field, collections management (archivists).
Thanks for the comment, Jared. We're glad you found the video useful. Starting the paperwork 6 months out is fine. Obviously things with Covid are very up in the air, however, it seems that countries in Europe are really trying to work with students/student visas so you should be okay. Well the best on your move. We're excited for you! Please keep us posted. Maybe we'll be able to interview you after you're there for 6 months (and if you're interested). We did one interview with a girl that's lived in Scotland on several occasions. Have you by chance seen what she has to say?

Scotland is ruled by a class of left wing lesbian feminists...
Not sure how you feel about that?
Very comprehensive. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment.
This will be very helpful. We are planning on relocating in 2022.
Thanks! Keep us posted on your move! All the best.
We have dreamed about moving to Scotland. My wife is a teacher with +20 years experience and I am a chef/artist/musician for over 40 years experience. How can I find out what kind of work shortages are needed in Scotland?
thnx. for such an informative video. i moving to Edinburgh. it is going to help me a lot. love from india🇮🇳
My wife, I & kids are thinking of moving to Scotland, but not to Edinburgh or Glascow. maybe somewhere in between. I'm a welder/fabricator making decent money. Would we be able to do it?
Would like more info on retirees in Scotland and what exactly is expected.
What do you mean what is expected? You are retired, we expect you to enjoy your retirement. 😀
Worker VISAs are one thing, but what if somebody from the US simply wanted to retire in the UK?
very informative . as i am coming to UK and have some many questions which is now clear 🇵🇰✌
what if you want to retire there?
5:05 - "The further you get outside of the downtown core, the more nature you're gonne have". Then you show a picture of Glencoe which is in the highlands and over 120 miles away. XD
Excellent video from guys in another country 👌
Thank you. This was a fun series for us to put together information on a wide variety of places.
Interesting video with handy info, thanks. I'm intending on moving there at some point. Such a complicated process though. I have dual citizenship between Australia and the UK (was raised in the UK but have lived in Australia last 20+yrs), so I'm assuming that I'll be alright as far as visas go. I don't think I'll need one to live & work in Edinburgh due to the citizenship but that's something I'd need to confirm. Thanks again for the info.
Thank you. No, you shouldn't have any issues with living and working there. Have a great time. Keep us posted on the move. We love hearing from viewers.
@@ExpatsEverywhere Thank you you're very kind. I'm thinking the move won't be for a good while due to saving funds, but also our old friend Covid.. I'll update you in due course :)
What about annual taxes? What types are there (e.g. Income, property, sales, etc.)?
Sorry, Greg. We don't have much tax info for you.
Being in drinking fights, choose your drinking partners wisely like any other country.
:-) Always good advice!
Born and raised in China, really was thinking about moving to Edinburgh. Love the old town and the style of the buildings there. Also the raining and froggy weather there. What's the price to buy a house in a town there, do you have any suggestions?
Hi Carmen, we'd love for some locals that watch this to weigh-in.
It is expensive Carmen so it really depends on your budget and what area in Edinburgh you would like to live in and also what type of house you prefer ie new build or something with a bit of history.
Great content! Do you have any moving and shipping companies that you can recommend between the US and Scotland? Thank you!
Thank you, Janná. Could you write Kalie and see if she's got any contacts. You can reach her at info@expatseverywhere.com 😁
Im considering
I have friends in Scotland so should make it easier. Sadly I never had the money to get a degree so it will be more difficult getting a job.
Thanks for sharing. 🙏 Sorry to hear about the degree thing maybe you can study one in Edinburgh.
Can you please make some videos about universities in Scotland... Especially in Edinburgh... Any way your videos was really informative.. Thank you
Thanks, Albin John. We appreciate the suggestion and the compliment. These videos take a decent chunk of time so we actually created a tier on our Patreon for such personalized requests www.patreon.com/expatseverywhere/membership (Citizen)
We will look into the SEO interest and see if it's something that would resonate with a broad audience. One thing we'd be hesitant about is how accurate our information would be. You know? We don't have any direct contacts at Scottish universities. We'll look into it though. 🙏
Albin, I am an American expat living in Edinburgh. Message me and I can tell you of the various universities and what they are like.
@@theruggedtravelers Thanks!
Born and raised in the US, really was thinking about moving- here was one of the options. I’m self employed, have been for years- bummer to hear there’s no self employment visa for people out of that region. What would be your best advice then? Would it be finding a trade that needs to be filled?
Also tourist visas are 6 months right? Is there any possible way to extend that. I’d definitely consider just spending a year there for the experience. Any thoughts would be great!
Hey Carl, this is where a lot of people do the digital nomad thing! It's much tricker right now because of covid but let's say there were no covid restrictions, you should split your time among several places and just rotate home. 6 months here and 6 months there (you choose the there). That's our initial advice if you're up for that kind of lifestyle.
What about entrepreneurship? Any way that would fit?
@@The_Red_Pill__ Like most location, entrepreneurship has its place and there are generally separate visas for entrepreneurs, which can make it "easier". Good thinking.
@@ExpatsEverywhere I was born in London and have a English birth certificate but was raised In the US. Can I move to Scotland as if I was citizen? I supposedly have duo citizenship. English born, English mother, American father. I have 100k in the bank and have worked hospitality for 20 years so I have that skill. Do I qualify?
@@michaelbyrd7883 If you have British citizenship, easy.
Hi! Nice video actually and I really find it useful. So I'm thinking if I choose to move/relocate with a work visa, will it be possible to bring my partner (unmarried) with me to Edinburgh?
Thanks, John. Generally speaking, yes, it's possible. Is your company moving you? The HR should be able to help with the spousal visa.
@@ExpatsEverywhere ohh! Thank you! I was actually worried if it’s not possible but for requirements we have mostly everything. Thank you!!! Yeah they’ll be moving me over to the UK

@@ExpatsEverywhere thank u .. yeah sure 😊 it ll be great
Housing costs are still well below what it costs in Ireland
Great vid, I’m going to semi retire in 2023 in Edinburgh.
Thank you! Nice. Enjoy it.
We had a plan to move in Edinburgh this year, but coz of Covid we changed our mind. And as I see, I think it was good desition. With recesion and all, would be hard to start from 0. What do you think? And now with brexit will be a lot harder.
It really depends on what you're going over there for. Studying in a uni or working for a multi-national company shouldn't change much assuming that you're moving at a time in the future when covid has either calmed down or gone away. Thanks for the comment.
@@ExpatsEverywhere i would love to work in a warehouse. Nothing better than some logistic problems to solve😅🙂
@@m-666 Those jobs are in demand right now but we’re not sure if they’re going to people already there. You know?
there's plenty of jobs here you should be fine
I hope I qualify for work as a middle school math teacher with a masters degree. Will move in the future if possible.
Hey Susana, do you have a state teaching license? You'll certainly be able to apply for international schools. That masters degree should put you in an upper pay category! Keep us posted on your move. Thanks for the comment.
My cousin and his wife, both professors with degrees from MIT and Harvard respectively, couldn't even get teaching jobs in Ireland.
We moving there soon from South Africa
Tami Radue all the best with the move! Let us know how it goes. We’d love to hear from you one you settle in.
What about schools and undergraduate education?
In terms of rankings?
What will Happen to Scotland after Brexit? Will it still be part of EU?
It all depends on a Scottish Referendum. If all remains the same, Scotland like England will be separate from the EU. After all, they're currently a part of BREXIT due to being British.
Nope Scotland will be out of the EU,thank God
@@ExpatsEverywhere Having voted on yes at the Scottish Referendum and No to stay in the E.U. Scotland will be out of the E.U. along with the rest of the Country AND hopefully we will be free from the lot when we get full Independence. And, i`ll be battling with everyone else if the wee numskull Nicola Sturgeon wants to take up back into that den of thieves in the E.U.
Hi, I'm from Jamaica and I want to study in Edinburgh and I'm pretty sure I'll need a visa will the process of getting one and going and staying in Scotland be difficult? and where should I start?
Hi, Talia. For a student visa, it wouldn't be very difficult at all. We would start with the university that you want to attend and have them guide you through the process. That should be the clearest and cheapest path really because they staff people that know the process.
So you’re saying people can’t live there if they work for themselves? Even though they have more than enough money???
i want to asked the question of you.
education institute have opened in scotland??
Asad Ali Great question, let us get back to you on that. We’re not sure.
Source in Scotland 🏴 confirms “Yes, school and university back open, with the usual precautions in place”
@@ExpatsEverywhere Thanks sir for reply because my father had applied for job here on base of teaching.
Asad Ali You’re welcome. All the best.
Nice Info please are in edimbrugh a Bad neibghoods like poorest areas and heigh crime level ?????
Would 25k be a good enough salary to live, save money, doing events and holidays away?
maxime peyrot Good question. It all depends on how big you live and what kind of vacations you’re talking about. That salary would not be like living the expat life In Dubai.
@@ExpatsEverywhere I currently live in Sydney on $AUD 70K/ANNUM . how would you compare to a £25k/month in Edinburgh?
It's possible, I lived in Edinburgh for two years on about 23K - I had to watch my money, budget for food and meals/drinks out etc - but because it's a University City there are loads of cheap options to find and mid-week deals. I managed to go on holiday twice each year, but again I had to be smart about where I chose to visit to keep costs down. In summary, a 25K salary is perfectly possible to live on and have an enjoyable life. The only thing I would say is that if you're travelling etc. too then you might struggle to save much on that amount.
@@beccaross3820 Whether you`re talking £ or $ its very easy to live on that amount as long as you live outwith City Centres. Go to Estate Agents on you`re 1st port of call as they have a vast portfolio of places to rent and they are best places at areas to live in and to avoid.
@@max21078 £25k per month ? You live like Royalty on that or, do you mean £25k per year ? Which is more like it.
Good vid but you never pronounced the name correctly. It’s ‘eh-din-bur-uh’ not ‘Edin-boro ’.
Thanks. We actually addressed that on another Review/Preview video. No excuses but a reason is explained in this video ruclips.net/video/DBzYXWyXQOs/видео.html and we give it a go there.
@Roy_Thousand Nope. The boro pronunciation is the American version of The English ‘borough’ whereas ‘burgh’ is a Scots word. They thought it was the same and they were wrong. If you disagree please remember that I’m Scottish and a native Scots speaker
Hi! Are expats the same as immigrants, or is it different? Sending hugs!
The general idea is that expats are more short-term while immigrants are long term or permanent moves in mind. If you call an expat an immigrant, it's not a bad thing and it shouldn't be considered a negative. It's just a way to describe someone's intended stay. - Josh
@@ExpatsEverywhere thank you!!
A few things from a native.
1. We're very welcoming. For example, graffiti found in the city reads 'IMMIGRANTS WELCOME'
2. Many nationalities can be found in the city. There's a lot of people who want to be here. Chinese, Turkish, Algerian, French and Polish to name but a few.
3. We Don't Hate the English. Much. Just the media and government. The general English people are just grand. They're kin and we love them.
4. We like to swear. Just a thing we do. Get used to it.
5. There is a class divide. There's the posh side and the 'not so posh' side. We do mix but its complicated.
6. Tourism is inescapable between june and september. The city grows during those months and it can get very busy in the centre of town.
7. DO NOT call a kilt a 'skirt' . Just don't. It never ends well. Also never call us 'scotch'. That's a beverage of the highest quality.
If you do come here, embrace the culture and have fun. We're basically up for a party 24/7. We want to know you, learn your culture and maybe have a little fun joking about with the minor differences in our cultures, all in fun.
oh yes, number 8....
Get used to weather changes. 4 seasons in 1 day sums it up perfectly.
Epic top 7....8.

Those are your basic utility costs on average for an apartment of 1,000 square feet. We touched on housing costs earlier in the video as well as there being a link in the description section to see averages in different areas of the UK.

You have got to say Edinburgh as "Edin-bra" not Edinbro -Bro! He he!
Don't worry, they let anyone in as you'll see when you get here.
So wait… you haven’t been there?
Kalie has but Josh hasn't. This video is a part of a 2020 series we did where we asked our subscribers to vote on what city they wanted us to highlight. Every two week we sourced information and put out a new video going by the alphabet A-Z. Edinburgh won the vote for E.
E-dim-bra
Ha-ha-ha - STILL pronouncing Edinburgh as 'Edin-boro' - for the benefit of the u/loaders and others moving here it's pronounced Edin-burra or Edin-bra !
Attention all 'Expats' or 'Immigrants' as us Scots call them happy to have you visit short term but please stay in England life is much much better there or so we are consistently told by the English Media.
So the only people to visit Scotland are English? BTW as a Scottish person we don't all call ex pats immigrants you might want to look up the difference.
