46mpg (about 5.1l/100km) for a car this size, in real road conditions i assume, it's surprisingly good. But too bad they ditched the GS and it's RWD from Europe. Let's hope for a awd version, at least, but i doubt.

What Toyota has done is great, and I do love they're the most reliable when it comes to car buying. @@shawnmichael9331 well I've owned 2. My first a 335i the injectors went bad, twice, fuel pump and vanos issues. Also by 70,000kms the engine started sounding horrible. Idled louder and rougher than my Jetta TDI with 300,000 kms on it. Luckily I was able to get rid of it at 100,000 kms for a decent amount. I took great care of it changing the oil every 10k twice as often as BMW recommends. I thought I was unlucky and got a dude so we bought an X3 with the N2 engine. Wasn't too bad for the majority of its life. It died twice on the freeway because of ignition issues, lucky under warranty, but the kicker was at 100,000kms the timing chain went and the engine blew. BMW blamed me because I changed the oil myself (even though I again did it every 10k and used to quality oil (ams oil)). So we now have an expensive paperweight sitting in our driveway that I don't know what to do with. Side note, when we had our x3 at the dealer getting diagnosed, I started a conversation with a technician who was on smoke break, he said our car was one of 5 in their shop at the time with a broken timing chain. Also a friend of mine bought a 430i and new and sold it after 6 months after it had been in the shop a total of 5 weeks with various issues. So ya pretty much any brand is more reliable then BMW

Why don't you comment on reliability and the cost of owning? A Lexus, being produced by Toyota, is waaaay cheaper to own and maintain over the lifetime of the car and has a much higher quality of components (everything not merely aesthetic) than it's German rivals. The Lexus can go for thousands of miles after the similar German cars have become endless money pits. I love your videos, and it would be very enlightening if you could comment on reliability, expected cost of maintenance, etc. for those of us who like to keep our cars for a long time and would like to see programmed obsolescence disappear from the car industry. Just compare the quality of the old mercs with the modern ones... I think it's worth mentioning that some brands make their cars to last much longer than others. It is very valuable and interesting information for buyers. Thanks for your great job!

The German Brand's nickel and dime you to death for things that should be standard by now. It never ceases to amaze me how some folks seem to glaze over the fact that German cars typically have a lot of electrical issues. That's just a fact. These cars are very difficult to maintain. I have friends and family members who've had really bad and very expensive experiences with BMWs and Mercedes. I just think the German brands are made for people who can afford not to care how expensive the cars are to maintain. I believe their primary target is upscale customers. Although Lexus caters to upscale customers as well, I believe they target a much wider range of clients on both the high and lower ends of the financial scale, so reliability is a must.

I think some folks just get caught up on the brand name and the prestige that comes along with having a BMW or Mercedes. For us regular folks, we like to get the best bang for our buck, and reliability is a must. Lexus knocks it out of the park when it comes to reliability compared to those other brands.

I also average about 37mpg at the moment, which doesn't sound great but nobody will find me a German car that'll do that, has luxuries like moisturising aircon and also goes from 0-150 only 1 second slower than an Aston Vantage (admittedly not the new one, but the same age as the GS). Even when you pull in into their parking lot they'll know its you. This would have been good if they knew me because of my very impressionable personality. But the actual reason was because I was a regular when it comes to repairs, break downs, and servicing.
The guy in the parts department had come to know me so well that he always tried to give me the maximum allowable discounts on parts I needed.

Now I own a Lexus ES for 4 years now, bought it when it was 2 years old, done some little maintenance on it except recently haven't got time to take it to shop. Only small minus (from rear seat perspective) is suspension comfort. I may be spoiled by my personal Mercedes with airmatic, but as I remember my time spent in the rear seat of Mercedes E-class taxis, I think also the Mercedes E-class ride with standard suspension better than the Lexus.

I think Lexus provide what most people really want and need, comfort (I think they have the best seats in the business), reliability, impeccable quality and an excellent ownership experience. But many motoring journalists are obsessed with "sportiness" and struggle to see past badges and tired cliches. How many people take big saloon cars on track days? Unless you live in Germany being able to cruise at 100mph+ all day on the auto bahn is irrelevant. And Lexus do offer great running costs. Cars like this may not light fires for car magazines but for normal drivers it is a superb car. And Lexus have some of the best designed interiors and exteriors out there these days. The only big criticism I have is the non-folding rear seats which is a bonkers decision IMO.

Once cruising the car, the E class, I have to admit is superior to none and I can also say that for the 5 series. The transmission on my ES is so smooth that a mechanic friend of mine thought it was running on CVT as he could not hear or feel any gear change. That's how amazing the ES is. In order words the Camry first uses this platform and is the basis of the big front wheel drive architecture. The only Lexus that is really different to the Camry is the rear wheel drive GS. I've been to a showroom and can only find interior differences and audio systems for both Lexus ES and Toyota Camry V6 leather seat edition. Legroom is still the same. Seating comfort, still the same and even a 4 cylinder Camry is still comfortable. Basically you only pay twice the money on the Lexus ES only for better interior and Mark Levingston audio. Lexus GS on the other hand as I've said, it's rear wheel drive. That car is the only true competitor to Merc E class and BMW 5 series. Comfort and driving pleasure are key requirements in that class and front wheel drives simply don't deliver the true luxury driving pleasure.

I bought a 3yo Toyota Aurion (Aus) and then owned it for 5 years. I did no little to no maintenance for the Toyota, 3 years with 0 (ZERO!!!) oil changing. Guess what, despite the facts that I mistreated it, it ran and ran and ran and served me well. Never broke down except minor common issues like tyre, battery replacing. The no-oil-changing only caught up with me after it was in an accident and sat in shop for repairs for a month then I had to get the oil changed. Then it kept on running well again for me till I sold it.
Now I've changed to a Lexus ES350, bought it when it was 3 years old and have been using it for 4 years now. Yes, now I know I should get oil changing and maintenance done every now and then. I've had ZERO problems with my Lexus ES so far except tyre change, battery change (once). Other than that, ZERO problems whatsoever.
HANDS DOWN TO LEXUS TOYOTA RELIABILITY.
I'm eyeing my next car: another Lexus.
Thumbs this comment up for everyone to see how reliable Lexus is.

Thank you for the EXTREMELY ACCURATE and most importantly, *HONEST* review! I totally agree with you , especially on the issue of the *noisy engine that drones* when you accelerate, and also the fact that Lexus cars are not comfortable anymore! The German vehicles have become vastly superior, leaving Lexus in the dust, and this is due to Toyota's own doing!! It appears they've gone mad!
That said, I must say I am a loyal Lexus/Toyota buyer, and I buy them primarily for their *RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY* which is *LIGHT YEARS* ahead of the German vehicles. When the German vehicles have turned to dust, the Lexus or Toyota product will have just been "broken in". And, of course, as you correctly pointed out, the quality of the interiors and the fit an finish is amazing!
If it were not for the reliability or durability, I wouldn't touch a newer Toyota or Lexus product with a 10 foot barge pole. They have become extremely unrefined, noisy and do not do anything well, all in the so called name of being "sporty". And I personally, don't like the direction they've taken in terms of the styling as well, although this is an area that is subjective!
Most so called "automotive journalists" just sugar coat everything and simply heap praises upon praises for a particular car, while nitpicking a very small thing here and there, just to show the (mostly idiotic) audience that they are "being fair" and pointing out the negatives as well. But this is an obvious farce, done to suck up to the manufacturer. Kudos to you for being a breath of fresh air!!

Not sure why you are comparing it to the A6 and E Class? That is for the Lexus GS, the ES starts at 40k where the A6 and E class start at around 55k. The Germans should be better if they're 30% more expensive.

We just got one a few days ago. It costs much less than the BMW and the E-class here in the States, so the comparison isn't as meaningful. It's well worth the cost while the German makes have you wondering if the cost is justified. Also in Los Angeles there is no place to enjoy the high performance of the German engineering. Our driving speeds are very reduced from those in Europe. Many of our streets have added speed bumps to improve safety. So the Lexus just makes sense.

However I must admit I'm not super keen on this Lexus as not a fan of CVT transmissions and you expect a decent infotainment system on a luxury car. I don't get this review though, surely the much better reliability of the Lexus should always be mentioned otherwise it feels like the review has its own agenda but I guess these reviews are more a surface level review of the Lexus and should be judged on that only. Many other variables come into play for those actually considering a purchase.
