  • 2017 KTM 1090 Adventure Review - In this video I take my first ride on the "baby" KTM adventure bike, the heavily revised for 2017, 1090 Adventure. Just because this is KTM's entry level adventure machine, does it make it any lesser of a bike than the others in the range? Stay tuned to find out!
    Many thanks to Jason and the team at the KTM Centre in Hemel Hempstead for letting me use the bike for review.

    Hi Missensen, great review as always. I too love the look of this and the colour is very striking. I have the tiger 800 currently, but could be pulled towards this one for its looks. keep up the good work.

    I have just had a look at one of these this afternoon, i went to look at the f800/850 gs. This is more comfortable, and easier to get my feet down and it feels better built and finished. I was surprised and my thoughts are turning orange!

    Picking my 1090 adventure 2017 up from hemel on Saturday! Took out a demo model yesterday and had it for a few hours. All I'd say is that it's a stop gap for the 1290 S in a year or 2's time. Fantastic bike. Cracking video, helped me make my mind up.

    The 1090 Adv is far from a "Baby bike". Designed as the successor to the 990 Adv, this 1090 (although not a R) is cut from the cloth of the large enduros.

    Great review. I’m currently riding my Explorer 1200 XC on a European tour & finding the top heaviness a real problem when pushing the bike around & low speed manoeuvring. Dropped it on 2nd day. It looks like the KTM 1090 could be ideal replacement 👍👍

    I like this one. Went to the dealer and hopped on. I'm 5'7" and couldn't get enough of my foot on the ground to get it off the stand. It was the R version. Don't know if that makes a difference, but I'd want at least 2" of lowering.

    Its funny how peoples expectations of motorcycles have evolved over the years. When i was a teenager, everyone rode 600 and 900's, and you had these monster machines with 1100 cc's. These days, a 1050cc machine is "entry level".

    • @carlosandleon

    Another great review! I'm a little surprised that with the mileage range this bike has KTM didn't add cruise control. Ducati also missed an opportunity to add it to the new 950 which by the way you should test ride for us! I get that these companies are trying to target a certain price point for these bikes but in my opinion leaving out cruise control as standard feature on a touring bike is a major omission.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +1

      7years later, thankfully a cruise control unit can be bought for it.

  • @GaryJohnWalker1
    @GaryJohnWalker1 7 лет назад

    Obviously not as spectacular as the various 1290 Adventures, R, S and I think T. But given the price and it seems still very capable, might be a smart option for lengthy commuting and touring. Though as others mentioned, cruise control would be a major bonus. As I've thought before, Hemel's not that far away...
    And another great review!

    Now that was a thorough, enjoyable review!
    It amuses how once bikes break 200 kg, manufacturers start quoting dry weight to us. I come from a lightweight sportbike background and 200 kg seems already on the heavy side to me. LOL!
    I've never owned a "big" touring bike. I don't have a long commute and this bike would be wasted for that trip, but it seems like it would lend itself to long weekend getaways? With some slightly more aggressive tires I assume you could handle dry dirt roads, packed gravel and the like?

    A great review just what I was waiting for. In your opinion would it be worth upgrading from the XRX to this bike they are about the same weight, have approximately the same range, all the same modes etc (albeit implemented clumsily but then the XRX has cruise control)?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад

      +Gordon Waltham Personally I'm not sure you'd gain much in doing so (except a bit more acceleration)....I think it comes down to which you like the look of most and whether your XRX is getting long in the tooth or if you just fancy a change...

    • @gordonLP
      @gordonLP 7 лет назад +2

      Thank you TMF, very interesting, I don''t really need any more acceleration than the Tiger, I only use it for the ride (locally) and like you (I presume), my wife is not interested, says it's to cold, to windy and to dangerous, cant argue with that, so will probably wait for the next Tiger 800 upgrade (or down grade), perhaps you could ask Triumph if that's likely.
      I really like you reviews as they give you a feeling of what it would be like to own the bike, you don't get that with magazine reviewers. I'm pretty sure most are unbiased, but by necessity, have to just give you the basic facts, there's nothing wrong with that and is part of information gathering, but not quite as good as the experience that you give.
      PS: after my comment about engaging the cruise control on the XRx (sorry out of context with this review), I had another look at the manual and didn't find anything other than "engage cruise control by pressing the "Engage" button", so was looking at the bike (like you do) and fiddling with the buttons when I noticed that the "Cruise Control" button is actually a LATCHING button (not mentioned in the manual), lo and behold you can leave it "latched" (Engaged) all the time it is then a simple action of pressing the "Set" button (top button) or if previously set (since turning on the ignition), the "Resume" button (bottom button). As the "Engage" button is latching and can be left set. I do not see the point of it, as cruise control can be disengaged by rolling off the throttle, touching either brake or the clutch, I suppose it's probably some "Euro" requirement!
      Sorry for the over long reply 😴

    Not sure why are you calling it a "baby" bike mate. 1.1 litre 125hp bike is a baby bike you should be riding a boss hoss :) If you want a swiss army bike this is the ultimate bike. 1290 are borderline wide for London, not to mention insurance, unless you have a garage you will not be insured in central (from theft). 1290 are a bigger financial loss in case your bike will actually get nicked. Tighter wheelbase greater range. If I overlooked any do it all bikes which are roughly the same power, size(same or smaller), please correct me.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +3

      I only tongue-in-cheek refer to it as the "baby" of the adventure range to make the point it's the smaller of the machines "mate"...

    • @strelokzero1179
      @strelokzero1179 7 лет назад +1

      TheMissendenFlyer don't take offence mate, just the way you said it and then "entry level" made me consider saving up a bit and going for 1290, but that would be an incorrect choice in my case. Otherwise doing a good job, as far as I know you're the first english vloger to review this bike, keep it up.

    Hey, I've got an off-topic question regarding your audio setup. Do you just hook up your lavalier mic to your Go Pro via the 3,5mm to USB adapter? Also, where do you place the mic itself - inside the helmet? If so, how does it record ambient sounds - motorcycle engine, passing traffic, etc.? Does the lavalier mic just pick up these sounds by itself, while in helmet?

      Yes the KTM definitely feels as if it accelerates significantly faster, in terms of build quality both the KTM and the Tiger Sport are finished beautifully, nothing to choose between them on that front. You say this is very light for this type of bike; my 2005 BMW R1200GS weighed in (and still does) at 199kg dry and 225kg wet. Obviously power is down on a new bike, but the power to weight ratio and handling of my lighter bike means that an "upgrade" to a newer machine would be a backward step, especially as I am getting older and weaker instead of younger and stronger. Luckily, thanks to efforts of BMW to lighten the 1200GS when they first made it, I am still the one waiting for the others to catch up. (although a lot if that is due to my big screen stopping fatigue over long distances)

      TheMissendenFlyer Well, I nearly thought I could manage the extra few kilos, and asked for a date and time and place for the swap, then I remembered my vario boxes and shaft drive, so sorry, no deal this time. All that aside, I really appreciate you great reviews, which I watch as soon as you release them, and I'm sure you appreciate my point, so many modern bigger bikes are now well over 225kg, and a bit of a handful for us pensioners, even some 650s and 800s are heavier than my old model 1200.

    Pity KTM don't make a Super Duke R with this engine, that would be an awesome bike, (who really needs 177 hp) and it would be the perfect bike to fill that huge gap between the 790 Duke & the 1290 SDR. Maybe one day :)

    • @muhammadhafidz3238
      @muhammadhafidz3238 5 лет назад

      Yes I agree. The lightweight nature will be awesome just like the 990 SDR. I am letting go my 990 SDR for this for a more multi purpose capability.

      @JeffWoodVJ 5 лет назад

      @@muhammadhafidz3238 For me, I'd really like a 1290 SDR, I currently own a 690 Duke R. I love the shape and size of the 1290 SDR, it's great for a tall rider, and it's a great looking bike !, But, I really don't need 177hp, and I definitely dont need the price tag :), so really a 1090 SDR would be the answer, I bet it would sell by the bucket load, especially if they could sell it for around £10K. And it would be easy for KTM as I'm pretty sure the 1290 and 1090 engines are same physical size. Also, would be a bit like the way Ducati have the 1200 and 821, both same frame.

Not everyone is going to be proportioned the same and it seems odd to me that people provide their height as a reference to how well they can hold the bike (to me at least). Scott Peterson Yep. First thing I did to my 1290SA was take the can off - it's enormous, ugly, and heavy (not a good combination).
      The Flyer makes a good point about seats too...my 1290SA seat was okay, bearable, but I wanted the sculpted single sear rather than the dual seats that are stock (and the single seat really improved comfort and rideability).
      Add a decent can and seat, and you've increased the bike's price by ~10%.
