  • Nutnfancy gives full review on one of his favorite motorcycles, the powerful and eminently off road capable KTM 1190 Adventure. In this in-desert review over two years of riding experience will be shared with the 1190 with inset video. Though quirky and perplexing in some ways (as all bikes are), the KTM 1190 still does what few other adventure motorcycles can do: it can shred on the road, tackle technical and rough terrain, beat fast motos and cars in a street race, get good MPG, be comfortable, and carry lots of gear.
Riding the KTM 1190 either in its dirt home or hammering it on a road course brings pure motorcycle enjoyment. In TNP though it is a workhorse, used to haul the many gear items for testing. In this role, the 1190 has to be durable, easy to maintain, able to haul heavy loads [over 1000 lbs total rider, moto, gear weight in this video!], and economical to operate. Breaking down, being fussy just won't do. We'll sell the bikes and get something else. We are happy to report, so far, the 1190s in TNP have performed well.
Covered here in this free feature length review: rec’d models [Adventure], POU, value, motor, quirks, filtration mods, power/range, suspension, ergos, wind protection, instrumentation, lighting, tires/rims, cargo, recommended mods and much more. Unlike a “press review” here you see and feel the personality of the “A-10 Warthog” of the Adventure Bike world and may end up wanting one. KTM replaced the 1190 with the 1090 and 1290 Adventure series of motorcycles, also very excellent. But we don’t see how the KTM 1190 Adventure could be beat in terms of capability and enjoyment.

Nutn I know you say TNP'rs "dont give a crap about motorcycles", but I can tell you I LOVE the bike content. I am a big biker currently have a Ducati scrambler and I am trying to finance a KTM 350 or 500 exc. Keep the bike content coming I will watch it! I would love to see a bike EDC video; Basically your loadout for bike riding. Jacket gloves pants boots etc. I took the MSF course a few years ago. Upon purchase of my bike Immediately went out and bought all the proper riding gear and I am always looking at the latest and greatest to improve my system. So I would love to see a detailed video of what you wear for street riding and one for off road

Thanks I would love that. Right now I'm running a Dainese jacket and gloves. Also running Alpinestar jeans/boots and a shoei RF-1200 helmet with a Sena 20s. I have chest, back shoulder forearm knee and hip armor all CE rated. I have been looking into one of those air bag vests, I know in one of your older bike videos you said you ran a HitAir brand. Lastly I wear a 5.11 backpack that I keep a few small tools, first aid, knife and a CCW. But anyways I would love to see how your system compares to mine. I'm also really interested in what you use for off road riding. Like I said I'm looking into a KTM which will be my first enduro since I was a kid so I want to get some gear more oriented towards off road riding. But yeah keep the bike content coming you'll get at least one view from me haha

You can clear the tpms error by putting air in the tires. The 21" wheel is best for not bending rims on rocks, holes, etc. Has better traction for braking and acceleration. Braking power is greater. The manual suspension is a bit more tunable and the additional clearance allows softer suspension without bottoming out.

I actually bought the KTM 1290 Super Adventure because of your earlier videos on your 1190 adventure. The two bikes seem very similar but KTM included a few more features on the SA. i.e. Heated seats/grips, cruise control, slightly larger motor, and panniers are standard. Both bikes are EXCELLENT and you can grab great deal on new 2015/2016 models that are still sitting at some dealerships. Thanks for the great info nutn

I just saw this video! I got my 2016 1190R new in 2016 and have ridden it all over East TN and the last 3 years in AK (JBER). I’ve ridden the basic 1190 and I can tell you from 7 years of experience on this motorcycle and 38 years overall that the R is definitely better once the off road gets going fast. So, you’re comments on selling the R is laughable. Many reasons why but I felt like I needed to post this lol. Thank you for your service, Sir! I retire from the Army soon!

Great review Nutn, thanks for taking the time and effort I really enjoyed it. I just bought a new adventure bike after trying out the KTM 1190, BMW R1200GS, and the Yamaha Super Tenere. No doubt the KTM was the most "performance oriented" bike of the group, but I couldn't get past the airbox issue and no cruise control for the big milage rides that I do. I also was attracted to the shaft drive of the BMW and Yamaha over the chain drive on the KTM. BMW is the fuel range king by a significant margin, with the Yamaha second with about 300 mile range. In the end, I went with reliability and low cost of ownership in the Yamaha over the performance edge with the KTM and the high cost of ownership of the BMW. The Super-10 is heavy at 575 wet, but I find that its extremely well balanced. I've taken it all over Colorado's toughest trails and passes and while it may not have quite the offroad chops of the KTM or BMW, it can hold its own when piloted by a decent rider. Thanks again for the review, love the ADV motorcycle vids!

Good thing I saw this. I just became aware of the 1190 and there's a few 2016s for sale in my area. But they are all R models. now I know why they are letting them go for around $9000 when bluebook has the value at over $12k. I need one that's more street savy. I'll look for the non R model. awesome comprehensive review.

Your review was perfect. I had a hard time deciding what bike would work for what i did and with your review you addressed every single major subject i was looking into. I have been a TNPer for a few years now and as soon as i was looking at KTMs I remembered this video. No other review showed a real person [not Graham Jarvis or Chris Burch] use the bike in as many different POUs. I just want to thank you for your time and effort into putting together such an in depth thought out review. You definitely saved me a lot of money, time, and hassle all while assuring me that the bike has the capability to do everything i need and want it to do. Hope to see you out on the trail! Thanks!

0:32 1000 lbs of gear. You mean everything together, right. The 1190 has a GVWR of 970 lbs, so 1000lbs of gear + passenger weight + plus bike weight would total at ~1700 lbs! :P

nice review. I have the 1190 R and can understand the standover issue. She is a tall bike. That being said, I wouldn't give up the ground clearance or travel. My review wasnt fakenews!
You saying dont get the R, I have to disagree. Its better off road and easily as good on the road, maybe not quite as good on a race track. Ive overtaken sportbikes on the road with a 21" front wheel.... fast on the road is only about the rider when it comes to modern bikes.

Just love/respect your videos! You are all business, no bullshit & to the point. Your unbiased opinion is what sets your vids apart from the others! Your review(s) on the 690R is one of the main reasons why I bought it, but definitely upgrading to a KTM twin cylinder soon....because of your straight-shooting reviews! Safe travels to ya both!

Been waiting for this one, very detailed review. Kinda has too many quirks for me. I'll stick to pavement on my FJR! I do love how you LOAD this KTM down. Great stuff Nutn.

Nutnfancy, I love you and generally agree with everything you say but I disagree about your choice of 1190 v 1190 R. BTW in 2015 I rode 7350 miles across the USA on the TAT on my KTM690 which I flew with from Heathrow to Montreal in the cargo hold thanks to the amazing Air Canada and back from Vancouver to Heathrow. As a Brit I have done (and will do more) quite a bit of long range of off road riding in the USA and if I was to take an something as big and heavy as a 1190, I would definitely pick the 1190R. Anyone with doubts check out Chris Birch 'Directors cut' on RUclips demonstrating what you can do an 1190R.

Great video as usual, makes me think seriously about getting a bike. Also liked the gratuitous shot of the sign between Pitkin and Tincup - that's a fantastic drive even in a car.

Great video! My twin called me one day said Nate "we have to get an 1190" I was like alright! Love the bike so far we have 3000 miles on them now since last June. Hoping to hit the trans America trail this year. Thank you for your service and the review

I love the bike info you give & the fact you actually ride them where they were designed to be ridden! Nothing worse than a poser. It's very hard to pose where you ride. Thanks for your service, I come from a military family.

Been following your channel since 08 I think?? Anyway, just wanted to say how cool it's been this witness the evolution from hiking gear to Adventure bikes. everything I dig in one place- guns, knives and Moto's!

Loved it, so sad the motorcycle content doesn't get more viewership in the project. I really want more of it. My favorite mod to your bike is the Outlaw Josey Wales sticker on the back of the top case. 👍🏻

I went out and bought a motorcycle last week because of this video, lol! Wasn't ready to step up to the KTM 1190 yet, but for a first bike, I think my Honda CB500X will do just fine. I've watched the moto safety vids like 3 each already lol, and I'm taking a MSF course this weekend! Thanks Nutn' for your hard work and detailed reviews you put out! PS the guys at Edge Motorsports say hi! ;)

Thanks for the video sir! Nice meeting you and your kids up at the meet around Hill Airforce base last year. Saw the KTM there and it looked good. I've got a 2014 Vstrom 1000 which I drive about 95% on the road as I'm more of the 500+ lb dirt bike is way too heavy to ride safely single track. No bike is perfect but I'm pretty happy with the V2. Keep up with the bike videos! Be safe and Take care, Bill

Great video and review! KTM 950 Adventure 2004 (first year) former owner.... 2005 - 2009. OR to FL and back, and all over the northwest. KTM Adventure is a beast of a bike! Saved my life on two occasions. A great full adventure touring on and off road.

Dude I love your videos and have been watching them for the last 5 years. I give you mad props for everything you have done for the RUclips community. And I just have to ask when are you going to do another cooking video? I'm sure I'm gonna get hosed for liking them, but I really enjoyed it and to this day I still make the shepherds pie. Lol thanks for being such a standup guy and making these videos for us.
