That is some fine work holding traffic. It's regrettable they were not able to get the work crew evacuated.

Roadwork like that is usually only permitted at night, luckily they had an idea but not enough time RIP

I’m very touched by the man who asked twice about the crew on the bridge. RIP to those on the crew that lost their lives
Nothing short of a miracle that they were able to stop traffic in both directions in time...
The two MdTA officers were on duty on either side of the bridge that night as a precautionary measure to slow traffic down in the active work zone taking place on the bridge that evening. Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction with construction barrels. If work had not been occurring that night, it is unlikely the officers would have been in a position to act so quickly and many motorists would have likely died by either being on the bridge when it fell or subsequently driving into the gap.

Any bridge like this in a busy port going forward should have to have emergency barriers that can drop and stop traffic.
You’re absolutely right, especially with today’s technology.
Smart
How about sub surface earthworks pilings and concrete so a ship will ground before hitting the columns?
Also how about tugs required to escort vessels past the bridge? If it's critical infrastructure to both the port and the local roadways and the piers aren't protected from the main channel, surely that would have been a prudent requirement.

I was wondering how there was no traffic on such a key bridge (no pun intended) at the time of collapse. Truly impressive they have these protocols in place and the foresight to prevent what could have been an exponentially worse disaster.
The ship reported their loss of steering and the possibility of hitting the bridge. A quick response from local authorities allowed police to go block traffic. I don't think it was necessarily protocol
Also it was 1 am, not a rush hour. Very few vehicles on the bridge at tht hour.
A bridge collapsed packed with Vehicles on December 15, 1967. Silver Bridge in W. Virginia 46 People killed

I remember that. It was horrible, it was close to Christmas.
That W. Virginia collapse was a horrible tragedy. I have to give credit to the Mothman mystery because that’s how I learned about that bridge.
They're so calm about this. 😂
yeah! i can't how calm they stayed 😵
I dkn't think it would ever cross their minds that the bridge would collapse. They wanted to go warn the construction crew but needed to stop traffic.
It's called training and experience, and it shows.
Freaking out wouldn't have helped the situation at all. They did save some lives but sadly not all. Hopefully for the families they'll get answers eventually. At the end of the day it's a tragedy not for anyone of us but the families of those who were lost & those who survived.
They likely get a few stop traffic orders a year. They're not anticipating disaster, just a ship might damage something.
But yeah after it collapsed their pitch goes up but still very concise radio calls. Professional.
Is there not a ship whistle/horn blast sequence that means ALL STOP

Am I hearing correctly that it sounded like only north side traffic was stopped in time before bridge collapse but not the south side? Or was I wrong and both sides were stopped before bridge collapse?
I think Both sides were stopped cuz someone said he was holding it. The guy who said that probably didn’t know if anyone was there
Both sides were closed in time. The officer with white captions at 20 seconds says he has stopped all traffic on the "outer loop". This would be the northbound lanes on the south end of the bridge. The officer with white captions at 55 seconds says he has stopped the "inner loop", which would be the southbound lanes on the north end of the bridge.
Following the collapse, officers on the north side then say someone on the south side still needs to stop the northbound traffic, but they were understandably busy and stressed and probably missed the earlier broadcast saying it had been done. Probably not the best radio conduct since they describe a speculative problem they cant see from their position, rather than confirming the situation on their end of the bridge. The officer with blue captions confirms at the end that he has stopped the northbound traffic.

I'm just wondering if the ship was equipped with an anchor? An anchor for a ship that size is usually a few tons specifically designed to prevent the ship from drifting. If they did have it they should find out if it was used. I haven't heard anybody bring up that topic.
wouldnt have made a difference, the momentum was too high because momentum is basically dependent on the mass of the ship, which was according to sources 95,000 TONS, So if they attempted to come to a stop, it woulda taken like 5000 ft to go from 10mph to 0
He did drop the anchor, and then continued to drag it along the bottom.

@@FrankOtheMountain Okay. I didn't hear nothing about it and was just wondering. Thank you

If they could’ve only had maybe 10 additional minutes… The crew could’ve been spared… 😔…. Police work at its best… It’s beautiful to know they cared about the crew’s safety too. ❤👮♂️👷♂️🚔🚨⚠️
And I still bet everyone’s work complained about being late.
Ok this is weird. How were they already in position? These were cops and they just happened to be right there? Does anyone know if traffic text signs were changed to alert traffic too? This is one aspect that is going horribly unreported. How did they shut down traffic crossing the bridge.
Maybe they were just passing by and were at the right spot at the right time. Or they were on bridge duty to keep an eye on traffic since construction was going on at the time.
Some these bridges have their own patrol units. The one going into new Orleans has its own patrol unit. They might been in the area already. And it's 1:30 in the morning. They got lucky it wasn't 5 o clock rush hour and the bridge was packed bumper to bumper.
Wow
Okay not in a offensive way but...
First we get the south tower in NYC hit by a plane, now we got the south pillar got hit by a ship
It is criminal not to have a alert system (loud voice/bright flashing lights) to warn those around in case things like this happens
on the ship.
It could have run on its own backup power. Should be mandatory.
I am sure it had been brought up by someone in a boardroom meeting, but they thought it was too expensive.
Warning lights on both sides of the bridge like a train crossing as to know not to enter the bridge
or along with electronic billboard signs that says not to enter when this gets rebuilt?
Any alert system that you speak of would not work. People do not see it often enough to know what it means. They'll probably think it means pull over to the side to let emergency vehicles pass, which is the complete opposite of what it is trying to do.
Agreed
It's not criminal, it's just not.
They successfully stopped traffic without your alert system. The only people who died were construction workers working on the bridge.
yes to the last comment - - - - -
I’m very happy that the officers were able to stop the traffic, but I feel like these men on the bridge could have been saved simply by involving a 3rd person to either stop the traffic or go and at least try to get those men.

The way they are talking it’s as if it’s a drill…

Main cause lack of common sence for the Master Duty officer and to the Pilots ....
they were en route down stream and when ship suddenly goes to NUC ( Not Under Commarnd )
and if you dont have much distance to move the ship away from the passage or to try and drop anchor to reduce the drift THEY SHOULD HAVE GONE ON THE PASSAGE with the help of rudder movement and managing the bow with BOW THRUSTER....
the only thing can happen is until the momentum stops she will drift down stream then not a big issue to get some help from tugs and move out of the passage and clear it for the rest of the ships....
NUC happens mostly when main engine fails or stearing fail... main engine fail nothing can do until it get rectified and start but if stearing fail there are other methods to manage stearing including manually...
if power fail on a ship like this there at least three main generators if one goes off there is always the next
in stand-by mode to get started or start even manually...
if those gens goes off still there is the emergency generator which give power to the ships vitals....
When they mean the ship vitals they probably mean lighting and stuff, bow thrusters arent really considerd vitals because there only used when going into port and anyways it takes a min or two for all the computers to boot back up
@@pythons206 thats why i said they were LACK OF COMMON SENSES .... not just lighting and stuff but the emergency air compressor to some essential pumps and bridge navigation equipments ect ect and a big ship like this consist with more than two main generators ( usually three or four ).... so even in a black-out either by manually can be started.... sure untill the computers started if skilled when receives power till you get the computers you can handle equpments...
See the ship wasnt up-stream but it was in the passage going down the river so its down-stream so eventually ship moves down with the river current thus by the momentum given by the main engine so if they were keen enough to keep the ship in the channel they could have skipped the damage.... and yes bow thrusters are used to get aid when berthing and departing from pier.... thats the concept but if had COMMON SENSE could have been used to keep the bow steady during drift till the momentum stops...what i see is they should have kept the ship on the passage rather than tried to get it out of passage....
the question should be who kade bridge collapse who is behind all this??????
Very surprising considering the massive ship took out a major structural support 🙄
Few emergency tugs should be in such critical locations of passage. Please accept condolences from Russia.

yes bow anchor was dropped. They tried to use the bow thruster on the ship as well when the power was restored but it blew the back up power system unfortunately as soon as it engaged.
The ship was 100 tons a moving over 5 mph. No anchor would stop that.
