From Wikipedia:
The Francis Scott Key Bridge is a steel arch continuous through truss bridge spanning the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor / Port carrying Maryland Route 695 between Hawkins Point, Baltimore and Dundalk, Maryland, United States. The crossing between Baltimore City and Baltimore County also passed through a small portion of Anne Arundel County. It was originally known as the Outer Harbor Crossing until it was renamed in 1976, while still under construction, and was also known as simply the Key Bridge or Beltway Bridge. The main span of 1,200 feet (366 m) was the third longest span of any continuous truss in the world. It was the second-longest bridge in the Baltimore metropolitan area, after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The bridge was opened on March 23, 1977, named for amateur poet Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), the author of the American national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". The bridge was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor, two tunnels and one bridge. Once completed, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final links in Interstate 695, the "Baltimore Beltway", completing a two-decade-long project. Despite the I-695 signage, the bridge was officially considered part of the state highway system and designated Maryland Route 695.
The bridge was 8,636 feet (2,632 m) long and carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually. It was a designated hazardous materials truck route. HAZMATs were prohibited in the Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels.
The Key Bridge was a toll facility operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). As of July 1, 2013, the toll rate for cars was $4.00. The bridge was part of the E-ZPass system and included two dedicated E-ZPass lanes in its toll plaza in both the northbound and southbound directions. In April 2019, MDTA announced that the bridge would become a cashless toll facility by October 2019. With this system, customers without E-ZPass would pay using video tolling. Cashless tolling began on the bridge on October 30, 2019.
The main spans of the bridge were destroyed on March 26, 2024, when the container ship MV Dali crashed into one of its support pillars.
You just put the size of this bridge, along with the gravity of the situation into perspective for those who have never driven on it.
It's big. I loved taking this bridge every day because of the view, 28 years. It's hard to believe it's gone.

I grew up in Baltimore. I have never lived near that part of town, but still I drove over and floated under that bridge multiple times. You don't realize that you take something for granted until it's gone
You know what, great respect to you for posting this video after the unfortunate events that occurred in the middle of the night. I remember in my memories of living in Baltimore county where I was able to see this bridge from a distance, but now once I go to revisit those exact locations where I used to see the view of the bridge, nothing will be there. It’s just a heartbreaking event, and I feel for the Baltimore natives who basically lived off driving across the FSK Bridge.
Never realized the impact of the ship was that strong, it immediately crashed the bridge. So heartbreaking. I wish no one was crossing that bridge when that happened.
Looks like it was a neat bridge.
In a few years you will probably see a new bridge
@@airbusontop87 Did this bridge collapse during the day?

In ‘riding’ this bridge, it incomprehensible to me how quickly this all came down. Respect to poster to give us this perspective, and blessings upon those affected by this. Wow.
You're right. The bridge looked strong and unyielding in this video. And yet it collapsed in merely seconds, like a house of cards.

I don’t usually “like” a video. But this “like” is not only for Mike posting it, but in dedication to all those affected by the tragedy that happened at 1:30a on 3/26/2024 at this bridge.
Like all video's. Cost is cheap, benefits are huge.
Same. Prayers for all affected.

Wow you’re so generous
So virtuous even my cat is clapping 🙄
As a resident of Maryland, I appreciate you posting this tribute to the Key Bridge. I remember watching the full video I believe of you circling 695, and I remember thinking as you drove over the bridge, "I haven't driven over the Key Bridge in years." It's great to have a video like this to always remember the Great Bridge as she was. Thank you again and be safe out there on the roads.
You know, there’s so many times I wanted to take the Key Bridge instead of the Harbor Tunnel and I’ve always been like.. yeah, I just want to get there/get home (I live in NY and I have friends that used to live in Annapolis but now live in Odenton). Same thing with WTC, I always wanted to take my kids and I’m like… who the hell wants to go that far downtown just to see another observation deck. Well, I got to take to take them to the new one but it’s not the same. If you want to do something, do it. It’s not always going to be there.
Tribute to a bridge... really?
@@amehka5416Shut up. People DIED when it collapsed.

@@JimAllen-PersonaI thoroughly enjoyed your comment. Your description of why you opted for the Harbor Tunnel over the bridge was EXACTLY why I didn't use the bridge more. I lived in New Jersey for five years, and every time I drove home to MD to visit family in Columbia all I wanted to do was get there the quickest way possible!! 😃😃😃
I watched this video this morning. I specifically searched for it. Thank you for posting.
Kudos from a former "Baltimorean" who traversed that bridge alot between 1989-1999. May those who perished Rest in Peace, and their families find the closure that they need 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
This is why I randomly film stuff in my near by neighborhoods. You never realize if or when it will be all gone.
Yep I often regret not documenting my area over the years, seems insignificant at first but sometimes you really get curious about how things used to be.
@@Bromon655 Exactly. And I'm sure there is a lot of people who recorded/documented a certain thing, but a lot of people don't release it to the public to witness.
Truly, I miss this bridge. I used it to visit family out of town, and on the way back, it was a beacon saying, "welcome home." When I saw its high, sweeping arch in the distance, I knew that I didn't have that much longer to drive. Unlike the cramped, crowded tunnels, the Key Bridge was lofty and free, giving you a long look over the Bay and sense of what Maryland is to those who live here. It will be missed. Thank you for making and posting this video.
I never realized how fond I was of this bridge. Drove over it a thousand times, it was part of the daily scenery.....it's just gone.
This is obviously a dedication to the events of March 26, 2024. Glad the traffic was halted. Prayers to families affected.
Lol 😂 traffic was never halted...watch the the traffic on the bridge in the videos of the incident...they lied 😮 ..thumbs down for you!
tHoUgHtS and pRaYeRs 🙄
With respect , @coreysmith8560 is actually correct. The 'Mayday ' signal gave the Maryland Transportation Authority Police enough time to shut it down (a radio call was released). Utilizing speculation as empirical evidence essentially removes the smallest amount of credibility that is likely possessed by those with the intellectual depth of a thimble full 9f water.
Always double-check facts, it makes your argument stronger, although I would surmise that the Grand Canyon would take some work to fill....
You must be fun at parties
@user-uu2uv8bw2s yes it was, what you saw on bridge were construction workers, duh
Terrible disaster. This reminds me of the 1980 collapse of the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, FL. That occurred when severe weather caused a ship to go off course and crash into a support beam of that bridge.
35 souls were lost that day, and the bridge was rebuilt in 1987 with concrete dolphins to protect the bridge from future collisions.
Were the Republicans screaming conspiracy theories then??
At least here, a mayday was declared and all traffic across was halted, limiting the deaths to the pothole repair crew.
Same here. I remember that day and how devastating it was for many. The new bridge is so much safer.
I remember the grating on roadway at the top of the Sunshine bridge too, really scary on a motorcycle. Also no break down lanes just like the Keys bridge. That too was a very sad day.
I’m a native of Tampa and the Sunshine Skyway disaster in 1980 was an I remember where I was when it happened event.
R.I.P. bridge... you will be missed.
Hi and good morning! My sympathies go out to the people of Maryland and the 6 people who lost their lives. I'm from Minnesota and remember the 35W Bridge collapse. I don't live in the Twin Cities but use to drive that bridge in the past with no worries. As I got older and had to relocate for work stopped driving up there because it was to far. My thoughts and prayers for the people of Maryland. 🙏😔
So sad what happened with the bridge, hopefully they find the missing folks.
Ever since the accident I've been looking for videos to see the bridge before it collapsed. Thank you MMT for sharing the video.
RIP Francis Scott Key bridge and the victims of this tragic accident
Yeah man, They did this on purpose to make innocent people lose their lives.
Great tribute, it's so sad to see that the bridge is completely gone 💔😞😭
Not realy, just the big part
the collapse that happened today was devastating. i hope that the 6 people still missing are found alive.❤
They have been cleared dead, sorry
@@gtavstepfordcounty1733 😭
Are you serious? there was no chance they could be found alive, they fell more than 200 feet into freezing water, landing on the concrete road that gave way below them, with 1000's of tonnes of metal crashing down on top, as well as their maintenance trucks. Did you think they would survive that AND just be floating around on the surface somewhere? good grief....
You know it is called hope. But in this case as you so wonderfully explained, even a miracle was impossible. RIP to all of them. @@greatunz67
I’m still hoping they’d is s chance they will be alive
I am from Baltimore, Maryland. I live in Glen Burnie, Maryland. I can't believe that the bridge would be destroyed in my lifetime. I am so sad this happened.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the people and families who were affected by this tragic incident.
I grew up 2 miles from the north side of the bridge. Graduated from Sparrows Point HS. Thank you for posting this memory.
RIP Francis Scott Key Bridge 1977-2024. Gone forever but forever remembered. It'll take years to rebuild the bridge, but it'll happen as it's vital to the Port of Baltimore. It won't ever be the same, but it'll be much more durable and better when the new bridge is built.
The bridge 🌁 was only 47 years old which is quite young for a bridge 🌉 to collapse
Somebody suggested a tunnel. That's a great solution to preventing this from happening in the future.
@@farmcat3198 it honestly wouldn't be a bad idea... Just be costly and take longer to build than a bridge.
Maybe a bridge-tunnel would be slightly quicker/cheaper than a full on tunnel. Could still have the issues of ships running into it (taking out road traffic) but it wouldn't block the shipping lanes like this incident caused. We have 3 of these bridge-tunnels in Hampton Roads (other end of Chesapeake bay).
@@farmcat3198A tunnel would have the same issue as the tunnels on 95 and 895. No flammable or hazmat cargo allowed. Trucks carrying such loads would have to drive around the entire city to reach the harbor.
@@kenelkins1787 That would be the main issue. As bad as a hazmat accident would be, it would be worse in a tunnel. Really I suspect they'll get it's replacement up faster than people think partially because the new one will not be that much different than the old. We've come far since the 70's in bridge building (tunnels too).
I've been over this bridge dozens of times, but this video really gave me the opportunity to see so many things that I missed because I was paying attention to traffic. Thanks for reposting this.
So odd that just last night, the Francis Scott Key Bridge came up in one of my feeds and I read about the bridge before I went to bed. I wake up this morning to hear the bridge had collapsed. 😢 My thoughts and prayers to those affected!
Opposite thing happened to me lol. I was just about to sleep at 1am cuz I had to wake up at 9am, but a special report came on the news. I couldn't believe it. I was glued for the tv until 5am. But I still woke up at 9am :D
It looks so sturdy when you see it from that angle, yet it came down in less than 5 seconds.
Thanks for posting this to show us the normal viewpoint as it was for many days.
Sorrow for the workers who were keeping it going and lost their lives doing that.
I’ve sailed under the bridge, but never drove over it - I’ve always taken the tunnels instead. Seeing how long it took to completely cross the bridge makes me understand why the people working on the bridge couldn’t get to safety in time. 😢
Beautiful Memorial Mike. We truly never know when our time is up.
Speed limit 55……but if you see a huge freight ship coming increase to 155.
What a sad day we face today. Thanks for this tribute of the bridge, it's very sad as what happened.
You’re awesome for posting this footage of the bridge after what happened today . My hearts go out to the city of Baltimore and prayers to the family and friends of the missing people. I have a buddy out there, he’s fine but just like everyone else, they are just in shock at what happened .
Hello from Kansas 🇺🇲 God be with those who are affected or no longer living
As a trucker I drove over this bridge before I couldn’t imagine being on this bridge when it feel down this video still makes the bridge look small that bridge is huge y’all no cap.
It is huge. I usually take 97/895 and a couple of times I looked over at the bridge and thought - damn, it’s long. I didn’t realize the impact of losing the bridge… a trucker commented on how he has to take the bridge because some trucks don’t fit through the tunnels (not being a trucker I never thought of that). You’ll have to take 695 the long way around.
@@JimAllen-Persona You are also not allowed too carry hazmat cargo through the tunnels so the trucks will have to take the long way around.
There are some huge ships that pass below it, upwards of 200 feet tall in the case of cruise ships.
Stay safe driver, @truckerjay8568. From a fellow "A" holder...
not to mention videos dont make it look like its tall... it was 180ft to the roadway from the water... loooong fall
So sad to see that bridge is gone and I hope they will rebuild to make it higher and wider like the current one.
A fitting tribute after the tragic and terrible events of yesterday. Thank you.
It is such a good thing you made this video! No one will ever drive over this bridge again - at least not this version of it. It fell into the water yesterday. It sounds just like the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse that happened in 1980.
I drove over that bridge many times going to & from work back in the 80's. Fabulous view.
I had to comment on this after what happened this morning. I didn't even know that happened until i saw all the comments. Mike, it is very respectful of you to re upload this video since the FSK bridge collapsed. Thank you so much for playing this again.
It is truly devastating what happened to this bridge, as the 6 lives that god decided to take at the end of the day in this disaster. I am praying for the families rn, as I cannot imagine the pain that they must be feeling in this tragedy. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for posting this! What a beautiful, gigantic bridge. Crazy to think it's gone. Biggest collapse of a structure I've seen since 9/11!
Yeah. I was 17 years old when the twin towers came falling down that tragic day
I still cannot believe this ENTIRE thing went down in a single blow from that cargo ship. Thanks for posting this video, so we can remember what it looks like.
My mother drives through this bridge during the day just like this. Thank God she wasn't there when it happened during the night. But prayers to everyone affected...
Not the entire thing. Just the thru truss section
this and freewayjim's video of the bridge will be me back so much nostalgia even though i don't live in maryland.
❤ I think this is needed for people who never got to drive over this bridge. It links all of our hearts together crossing over it now. ❤ R.I.P
Thank you for providing this video. ❤ Such a terrible accident!
The Minneapolis I-35W bridge, which was 1,907 feet long, collapsed into the Mississippi River on August 1, 2007. The new bridge, much smaller than the Baltimore Bridge, opened on September 18, 2008. The only bright side is Baltimore will get a new state of the bridge with all the bells and whistles. It will probably be no less than eight lanes and lit by LED lights at night that can produce any color of the rainbow.
I can’t imagine how those unfortunate individuals on the bridge must’ve felt when their world collapsed! That bridge was huge and beautiful!
I went to dc yesterday, went through Baltimore and crossed the same river via interstate 895 and via Chesapeake bay on the way back. It was a planned trip for us so the irony that the day we went the bridge collapsed hours before we left
Btw I enjoyed the video, thanks for the tribute
I just watched it again. Just gives me chills when you enter the bridge.
I was 10 years old when that bridge opened up. Still hard to believe that its gone.
I was already subscribed just because it's an interesting site. Now, it becomes a public service; possibly, the best historic record of its type. Thank you for posting.
My hometown!
It amazes me how large these container ships have gotten. It is like a huge moving skyscraper.
If there’s any silver lining (and I use the term loosely) is thank god it wasn’t at 5pm or 8am peak hour bumper to bumper traffic that had no where to go.
Some years ago, around the turn of the Millennium, I hooked up with the Ellicott City, Maryland-based host of the 'Art Deco Architecture' site over our campaign to save Derby, UK's former Bus and Coach Station from demolition, so it's strange that we're linked on that subject given the 'demolition' of this structure. In an exchange of Facebook messages she's been telling me of her trips over the Francis Scott Key Bridge during the 2000s to visit a flea market, that is itself no more, so thank you for this evocation of those journeys of hers.
I feel like the theme from Taxi should be playing in the background.
It's tragic and terrible that this happened but I am thankful for the preservation of this bridge's history in video form. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all lost as well as those whose lives will be disrupted as a result of the loss of not one but two major corridors as a bridge like this is truly an intersection of the road above and the water under it. Thank you for preserving and uploading this Mike!
I imagine Google Street View has preserved it as well.
I'm still in shock that it's gone. Drove over it hundreds of times. People who have never driven over it are surprised at how big it was. Those shots from the air don't do it justice. You gotta see it firsthand.
Thanks for posting this. You never realize what an important role American Bridges play until one is totally Destroyed like the Francis Scott Key Bridge was.
I remember driving with my family on this bridge 🌁 back in 1996 at age 12. Thank you so much for posting this
Just like when the NYC towers fell. No one would have ever thought that this massive bridge would get hit and collapse!!!
That huge structure took years to be build up and open for business but only 3 seconds to get knockout to the ocean bottom, is really sad, blessings to the affected families.
Wait, is that the one that ship just tore out? Good lord, that thing is (was) huge!
Yes
Respect for you posting this video tribute to the bridge after the tragedy that happened. 😔 I remember riding over it with my dad when it was quite new... about 1979 or so.
I worked a travel nursing job through the fall and winter in Southern Maryland and would come home to Essex MD every weekend via this bridge. Eastbound just like this. You would see it in the distance, it would disappear and then reappear huge and majestic. I always got a little thrill seeing it. Can't believe it's gone.
Wow! I've never been on the bridge or even to Baltimore but this video shows just how bad this disaster was and is.
Respect to you for posting this very kind of you. So sad what happened. 😢
You know what.
In this world, I’d have expected people to have a fit about you posting a video like this on the same day as the collapse, saying that it was disrespecting the dead or something like that.
Instead, I am pleasantly surprised that people are commending you for it. Makes me hopeful for humanity a bit.
RIP those lost.
Such a beautiful truss bridge. Sadly will never be rebuilt the same and probably a boring bridge like the Subshine Skyway Bridge incident in Tampa Florida.
Been on the bridge a few times. One thing to be glad about is that it didn’t happen 5-6 hours latter during rush hour when then bridge woud be packed.
That would have been like a scene from Final Destination
I still can’t believe it I feel awful for those who were injured/killed. It’s definitely going to be a long and expensive project to rebuild the bridge. Just shocking, no words
Wow, thanks for sharing. Im not from the U.S, nor do I live there. This video helped me understand and put into perspective just how big this bridge really was. Visually this bridge reminds me of a couple bridges that im more familiar with. To an extent the Key bridge looked a little bit like the Auckland Harbor bridge in New Zealand and the Sydney Harbor bridge in Australia, combined together. Very sad and unfortunate to those that were affected by this tragic disaster. They all may rest in peace.
Driven over this bridge many times in 40 years or more. I never gave it a moment though. Until now. It's gone forever!
Not forever. 3-4 years from now, there will be a new, modernized Key Bridge ready to serve the public. I expect it will be an entirely different design. A cable-stayed replacement would be awesome.

Still can't believe that bridge fell down like an Erector set. Thanks for posting your travels over it and I pray that the workers are found.
It is so had to imagine that the size of this bridge and the amount of power to take it down!
Lived in Edgemere for 23 years and drove this bridge all the time. Still in shock its gone. There was a lady stopped in the right Eastbound lane at the top of the span once. I pulled up behind her, she had a flat tire and was just sitting there. I told her she needed to move to bottom of bridge and I would change her tire. Just like that there was an MTA officer pulled up and was like, we need to get off the bridge before we get hit. He escorted her down and I changed her tire. RIP to those 6 road workers just doing their job! 😥
Giving us all that one last ride
After watching this video and multiple videos on how the bridge came down it makes me wonder just how vulnerable the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is to something like this happening.
It looks so massive and strong that it's hard to believe how fast it came down
As a former resident of Maryland i remember driving across Key Bridge a couple of times.
Just went under this bridge on a cruise from Baltimore less than 48 hours before the collapse.
I admit, that is a scary bridge that I would have a panic attack crossing. No shoulders, a steep uphill climb, really high above water, a steep downhill descent, and only two lanes. My prayers for the people working or crossing the bridge during the accident, and for their families and loved ones.
The section of the trusses is impressive. They look so massive yet they fell like a house of cards.
This will now be up there with all those home video posts of tourists entering and exiting the Twin Towers of The World Trade Center. Here one day, demolished the next. Watching that disastrous footage of the Key Bridge made me have flashbacks to The Bay Area Bridge incident during the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake. Bless you for preserving history.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I always shiver when I drive across some of the area bridges. I feel safe on the Golden Gate Bridge. However, I always feel a bit of concern driving over the Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward and Dumbarton bridges. For some of them (or for some stretches), the support pillars remind me of the Key Bridge.
After seeing this video, I find it even more impressive how quickly they stopped traffic to the bridge in such a short period of time. I wonder if there were other construction workers that were positioned near the entrance on each side of the bridge that were able to stop traffic so quickly.
Exactly . Makes you wonder ..
It was the police that stopped traffic
I was on that bridge 4 days ago
Prayers to the people affected by that tragedy that just occurred🙏
wow look how high it is, imagine how scary it must’ve been for those construction workers to fall from that height/feet. Never knew the bridge led into Baltimore County, into Dundalk
I saw all these different video posts on RUclips about this bridge and its destruction, so I checked Wikipedia and found this had just happened! A bridge that important and expensive being destroyed by a shipping vessel just like that is like a well known celebrity dying prematurely without any warning.

Thnak you for the nice trip on that now destroyed bridge how it was a great bridge and how useful it was to so many humble families earning their salaries. God bless.

The same thing happened to the bridge in Tampa Bay in 1980. The new Skyway Bridge is awesome, and points to what will replace the FSK bridge.
Looks way bigger up close than I imagined from the collapse video.
