7.3 rough idle on startup (Easy Fix)

- My 1997 Ford F-250 Old Body Style “ OBS “ 7.3 power stoke diesel was having rough and surging idle problems when cold on start up. Here is how I found the problem and fixed it. Hope it helps

Excellent sleuthing and what a great find! Thanks for passing that along. I have no problems yet but I'll be looking mine over for any signs that that might be happening. Preventative maintenance is the best kind of maintenance.
When they run they're the best truck ever and when they break it can be the end of the world!..so many potential problems with so much wiring..the I.C.P sensor will make the idle drop to 300rpm if it's bad..if you unplug it with the truck running and the idle goes back to normal then it's the I.C.P.. normally when they go,or if you unplug it,the check engine light will come on..i just overhauled my 95,got it up to 1.5 million km!

Awesome! I’ll check mine ASAP! Also I have a fuel leak and it’s the weep hole on the pump there’s also a small filter that needs cleaning and if clogged there’s a lose of power on any incline!
Good luck. I had to replace my fuel pump a while back it was leaking as well.
Thanks for the help. I have a 97 and the same wires are exposed. A while ago I also discovered to check your wire harness under your intake side of the turbo since it tends to push on it screwing with its ground and thats totally messes everything up

The engine oil temp sensor was going out on my 96er...caused the same issue.

Hey man i have an old 92 7.3 IDI non turbo, i want to do a dana 60 swap but i have coil springs in the front, what do i do to convert to leafs?
I have a 04 f250 turbo diesel it's doing the exact same thing been like that for like 3 months now can't figure out what it was, got changed the fuel pump filter, flushed the lines, cleaned the Injectors but still doing the same thing

Hey with the Dana swaps do I have two change both axels or just the front if I want to engage 4x4 for long periods of time like in the snow or something??
Just the front. It’s set up just as if it were a F350.
Holy spaceeee!!! What did you delete ? The air compressor and ac system?
Nothing is deleted. Still has A/C had aftermarket intake and the stock black plastic cover over the fuel bowl has been removed. Might make it seem more roomy

bran new oil and fuel filter
AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON...
just when get warm up.

Have you ran a diagnostic on it to see what code it is throwing. That would be the best place to start

the scanner don’t reed nothing
I know this is old and I hope you've fixed it by now but just fyi to you and anyone else reading this:
Most scanners at auto parts and for home use can't scan the 7.3l you need something like AE (auto enginuity) or a snap on or equivalent scanner.
When parts stores try to scan mine it makes the truck stall and they tell me they can't connect

Yeah exactly how mine felt
I had bad injectors when this happened to me. I'd have good power then nothing. Then it would be fine again. Hard idle at stops and stuff
Have you replaced the CPS? I had the same problem. I highly recommend the international cps from dfuser. It’s about $45.

Don't know if that's what's wrong with mine, but I'm betting I know more now than I did. Now if I can find some videos on this crappy shifting auto behind the 7.3
Yeah the Auto trans in the 7.3 has always had problems. I hear you can get them rebuilt really strong. That’s why I went with a 5spd though.
@@chasegj its plenty strong, just don't like to shift till about 2500 rpm. I'm sure it's a module or sensor, but no joy so far.
I don't have that problem, yet. But, thanks for the video! I could see this being a real issue later on when my truck gets a few miles on it.
Tip....On your next video, try to stop doing the "tisking" with your tongue. Seriously, it's annoying. You probably don't realize how often you do it.

No check engine light. Just random rough idle
@@chasegj a friend told me it may be the crankshaft sensor too.
Yes rough idle can be caused by many different things. This just happened to be my problem and was an easy fix.
97 7.3 here as well. Impressed with how quickly your fires up. What other work have you done to it? Thanks for the video
Matt Eberhardt Thanks. It has aftermarket exhaust from the turbo back. K&N intake. Dana 60 swap. Other than that it’s pretty much stock. I have changed all the fluids to full synthetic.
@@chasegj get that K&N out of there. Pretty well know to dust turbos and motors.

Recently Acquired a Dana 60 front and rear assembly out if a 95 f350
Intend to switch soon,
Would like to know any suggestions. Extra parts needed for swap,
Reverse shackles front/rear, suspension blocks for rear, different Pitman arm. What springs for front (suggested Super duty springs for front or f350 rated , and what springs in rear?
Interested in a hight of 4".
My truck is an automatic. . Any help , greatly appreciated.
