I too found it necessary to shelve this story until I could read it for myself. The narrator’s vocal affectations completely doused the warm glow lingering after “Letters for Phoebe”.
Your delightful, well crafted storytelling deserves so much better. I’m pleased you agree. ❤

Recently found your audio books on YT and have binged almost all of them now. I love listening to romance books while working as a wedding florist. Totally not cliche... 😅 I sincerely appreciate your author's note on this one. The concern in your voice made me tear up a little. As someone who's experienced a close loss through Alzheimers, you did a fine job of portraying the father and kept his dignity well. My heart only breaks for the characters as it sounds like he's still in early stages.😢 Can't wait to hear more from you and thank you for posting here for us poor working class to enjoy. 🥰

What can I say? I loved it. 😊 I normally don't care for "short stories" because there just isn't time to develop the characters and relationships enough to suit me. However, you have managed to do so! I was heartbroken during the carriage ride after (yes, flighty) Beatrice returned home, but I was elated at the same time due to Oliver realizing which sister that he truly cared for. I didn't listen to this one in my normal piecemeal fashion because it captured me early on due to its inherent nature, so I find myself looking forward to an immediate re-listen to glean tiny bits I may have missed this time through. I was thankful for the times of clarity that you gave to Mattie's father. As personal issue, it spoke to me. I always thank you for sharing your gifts, and this little gem is no exception. (BTW I really enjoy your author's notes and hearing your perspective, and I like the detail your designers do on the pictures. This one has a tiny pigeon near the right. 😊)

I just responded to your comment on Ed's story! This message has absolutely made my day! I'm thrilled to bits that you enjoyed the story, especially since short stories can be such a tough nut to crack when it comes to character development. It's like a little bit of magic when a shorter tale can pack the same emotional punch as a longer one, isn't it?
That carriage ride scene was a heart-tugger to write, so I'm right there with you on the emotional rollercoaster. And Oliver's realization is one of those moments that I hoped would resonate deeply. It's wonderful to hear it did just that for you.
Knowing that you're planning a re-listen already is the highest compliment. And I'm especially moved to know that Mattie's father's moments of clarity spoke to you on a personal level. That connection with readers is what storytelling is all about for me.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to let me know how much the story meant to you.

I like Maddie and Oliver! ❤ The topic of dementia or Alzeimers is real. A close relative of mine started with saying hello to someone they greeted just a few minutes before. He was really able to function other than that. Or maybe his wife kept everything functioning more than we knew. It is interesting to think of how people at that t I me period would have thought about it and been affected by it. No matter what, the toll is great on the care-taker. 😢 Thus was a lovely story. I love the father and as someone who watched my own grandfather struggle with Alzheimer’s and eventually become one of his caretakers, I believe you did his character justice. The early stages are so scary and uncertain and you captured those moments while also showing how much of the perceptive and caring man still remains. Sorry about the delayed response. Google often will not post my comments for a period of days. 🤨Thank you for the link! Both articles (the link you gave me and the subsequent link in the article for the voucher itself) were very interesting. They brought attention to a couple of things in "An Unsuitable Suitor", namely Oliver's thought that "of course, this is Wednesday" referring to the attendance to Almack and his comment that he had to visit some patronesses to get his voucher and Mattie's comment about the refreshments apparently being lacking. 😉In the article, it seems that not only was good standing essential but also a cost of 10 quineas (or a reference for 7 shillings) and purchase of tickets. I find it interesting that the Marchioness of Buckingham had to have a voucher even after she had been married for 21 years! Exclusive indeed.😊 I also loved the pictures of the evening dresses of the period and the poem by Luttrell. Again, thank you for the interesting additional info

Love your books , however, Gentle criticism, the narrator really needs to attempt a less affected accent, it seems she switched between several accents within the narration for the same characters. I wasnt sure if it was a scottish twang, an overly affected English 'posh' accent, also many words were mispronounced.

Hi Sally, love your books, but this narrator - the accent wanders across England from sentence to sentence, the deliver is forced and sounds more like a 1930's radio play then anything modern. The pronunciation of some words is perplexing and the cadence is constantly changing rhythm. The "voice" many of the characters puts me in mind of Frank Spencer in so many places, and not in a good way.
Such a pity, its a delightful story.

I was trying to find the "high spot" you referred to that linked the anthology stories. The transcript translates it to "all Max". What was the correct name? I'd like to give it a look-see on google.😊 Thanks.

Almack's is the correct spelling. It was QUITE the location. It appears in a lot of historical romance novels. There's a lot of great info out there. One of the writers/researchers I respect greatly wrote a lovely, easy to understand piece on her blog here: www.regencyhistory.net/2011/10/almacks-assemby-rooms.html

Sally, when ever I listen to a Regency romance, I wonder at so many terms used in the stories. Like items of clothing, cloth of super fine, pallice, fine muslins, Almacks, Barouche carriage and other carriages etc. Wouldn't it be fun for you to ask readers, listeners, what terms they would like to learn about and you could do a video just talking about things from this time period and show pictures to explain? You're a wealth of knowledge on terminology, it'd be great to learn from you.

@@AuthorSallyBrittonThank you for giving a new narrator a chance. I’m not big on criticizing people. So I’ll say I’m sure they will get better as they go on. Maybe you can get Jessica Elisa Boyd to redo it. I believe she’s the narrator for some of your other books right? Thank you for all your great books. Have a Wonderful Day.

"Owlivar"? Who pronounces Oliver as Owlivar? This is a really sweet story, but as others have said, the narration is unbearable. (At 1.25 times the speed it was a tiny bit better).
I wish American narrators would simply narrate American stories, or read the books in their own accent, and British English people would narrate books that call for a British accent. I am German, but familiar enoughwith various British English accents to find the fake British ones assumed by narrators from the US really really cringey. And if I as a German can notice, I don't even want to know how it makes native speakers' ears bleed ;)
BUT I loved the easy flow of the story and what I really love in general about your stories is how soothing and uncomplicatedly sweet your romances usually are! They are safe, and I don't have to worry about them being upsetting or overly sad. Although the father's illness was sad in this one!

Al tho’ criticism of Narration infuriates me, as an avid listener it was so well done, flowed not mechanical but w/ such feeling. My suggestion disallow any objections….Sounds like an evil force to me. Computer generated NEVER…But thx…
