I remember Kilimanjaro as a kid and while it was tense, it WAS an accurate reflection of what goes on in a REAL game reserve. Having been to South Africa in 2018 on a REAL safari over the course of many days, it is NOT uncommon even in enclosed spaces to see your guide carrying a pistol (or keeping one in the glovebox of the Land Cruiser) and motorcycle riders in full balaclavas wearing GPS trackers to protect the precise locations of the elephants and rhinos inside the reserve. Oh yeah. They also have a rifle strapped to their back and a shoot first, ask questions later attitude for ANYONE who would try to break into the area and harm the animals. We live in a very insulated and coddled area of the world and should consider ourselves lucky because the original plot for Kilimanjaro safaris is happening DAILY elsewhere on this planet.
Favorite "Frozen" story -- shortly after the ride opened in Epcot, they had an adjacent character greeting with Elsa and Anna. I stopped by to see how long the wait was. It was WAY too long, well over an hour. But I said to the cast member at the entrance: "If you had Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell here, then I might get in line!". She replied "It STILL wouldn't be worth it!!"
I love DFB Guide I legit watch every day! Just an FYI about Test Track as a GM employee I thought I'd let you know GM and Test Track never parted ways. Chevrolet is a GM car brand. Disney and GM just decided to go a different route with sponsorship to make it more Chevy the car brand and less about GM the automaker. Fun fact as a GM employee we get access to a secret lounge above the waiting area and an instant Lightning Lane admission :)
ExtraTERRORestrial was amazing and miss it to this day. Told my husband all about the safari and was very sad to see it had changed. He never got to see the original version like I did and would love to see it come back with so many others.
Getting rid of great movie ride is the biggest mistake they’ve made in the parks. It was an emblem of the park and a love letter to movies, not to mention a really cool ride with a great role for cast members. Runaway railway’s sketchy technology fails in comparison.
I loved the Maelstrom ride, but my favorite part was at the end where they had a film presentation on Norway’s economy. Everyone just walked through and out, and I got to sit all by myself in that nice theater and enjoy the movie.
While I have no objections about Frozen Ever After, I still have that nostalgic longing for the original Maelstrom. Odin's glowing eye, the menacing forest trolls, the plunge into the stormy Atlantic Ocean near an oil rig: those were fond memories. Maelstrom and the original Journey To Imagination were my two favorite Epcot rides during the 1990s. I miss them both!
Re: Frozen everywhere. I rode the Jingle Cruise pre-Covid to enjoy the holiday jokes. As we came around the bend to Schweitzer Falls our guide cried out, “Look! The only thing at Disney that isn’t Frozen!” It must not have been an OG joke, because I never heard this quip again.
I remember riding the original safari ride when I was like 6 and I was terrified and so sad. I was young enough that I thought it was all real and I was scared the poachers were going to hurt us and that the baby elephant was actually hurt. I’m glad they have changed it because it was a lot, especially for little kids. Also rode the OG mission space orange addition on that trip before the intensity of it was taken down after someone passed away on it and that was also a lot. That whole trip was mildly traumatic come to think of it. Haha.
Been going to Disney since I was a kid thanks to my mom, it has become a yearly trip for me and the family, and now me and my wife go yearly, I rode the original safari many times and as it had a great message I originally thought it was so bad, do miss the original
This video is great. I was at Disney ten years ago. Good to know there is some good in that. Now I have all this memories of rides that don't exist anymore.
I’m so glad I got to see the original safaris, won a trip to visit during the cast member /press previews (local Orlando radio). It was super well done and a great message, but yes a little out of place. I still expect that bridge to “break” every ride, though lol.
Is there a book or something that has the different Park maps showing the changes over the years? I always thought it would be a cool thing and then have each of them on see thru Mylar that overlay each other. Big seller I bet!
Alien Encounter was awesome, Disney needs more "scary" attractions. The safari needs to bring back the falling bridge effect as well. Frozen Ever After is an awful, cheap overlay in World Showcase. Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is great, but it shouldn't have been the replacement for TGMR, nor should it be in the Chinese Theater.
Oh man, my heart actually started pounding just hearing about Alien Encounter. I was an adult riding it and have still got that sense of terror thinking of the darkness and being locked in the seats.😱😱😱
I remember the Extraterrorestrial ride - my little rother was 5 at the time, and was absolutely freaked out. IIRC, the next day we went to go see Independence Day, and between the two, it was a rough couple of days for him.
I was lucky enough to ride Expedition Everest right after it opened. A-mode yeti was very cool, but I rode it again back in November and it was just as fun with the B-mode "disco yeti."
Cowardmess or the stupidity of us parents(yes myself included) that ignored the warnings and took my kid on anyway, even after my older child has had a meltdown. Sorry that teens and adults have to miss out on the genius of Disney Immagineers.
I got a question for ya. at 24:30 when talking about C3P0, I noticed (during my disney trip) in front of him on that rail is a mirror. What is this for? Odd place for a mirror. I asked a cast member but they were not sure.
Alien encounter was one of my favorite attractions when I was a young teen it most definitely wasn't for everyone but me and my father and mother loved it sister not so much lol
When I went to Disney with my family in 2015, I remember going into the figment ride and then seeing a sneak peek of Inside Out in the area next to it.
I went on the original Safari as a young kid and had no idea it changed since then. I knew it was fake since well, it's a theme park! It was an introduction to the concept of poaching and a very powerful one that I still remember to this day. It wasn't traumatizing, just very eye opening about how dangerous the world can be and how badly animals can be treated. I see nothing wrong with how it was, sometimes shocking lessons are the best.
3:55 I went to the original version of Kilimanjaro Safaris as a kid, and I loved it. I thought it was really thrilling, but I stayed rooted in reality on rides and when watching movies and shows from a relatively young age.
We happened to be in the Magic Kingdom on the very first day of a trial run for Extraterrestrials Alien Encounter. It was so exciting. We filed in in this order...first my husband ,me,my sister, my 10 year old niece and my 9 year old daughter. The seat harnesses came down trapping is in our seats. The show began and I loved it until I heard my daughter screaming and I realized I couldn't get to my baby. She was left without parental support and I was devastated for her. The ride was well done for an older age but we had no warning that it wasn't good for young children. Evan a few years later after changes had been made she wouldn't ride it. When Stitch took over it was fun. She still has all the staff autographs from that day. She is now 37.
Uk baby here. I remember doing the orange ride as a kid on mission space and I LOVED IT!! Not been back since I was 10 (im 19 now and trying to save for another trip) ur lucky because you can just hop in the car and drive a few hours but I got to have a 7 hour plane journey plus the getting to the airport which would take a few hours and then the price which would be several thousand pounds at least. One day I will be back and I’m keeping up to date with your videos to make me feel like I’m there in spirit
Pirates actually had at least one woman chasing the male pirate on the original ride. Also, General Motors and Chevrolet are the same thing. It was my understanding that they changed the name from GM to Chevrolet because of brand recognition.
I remember Countdown to Extinction as a kid. I don’t remember it being much different from the way it is now, except the sponsorship by McDonalds. The queue was more interactive too
I can’t find the incident online, but didn’t Mission: Space get dialed down once like right when it opened because it was too intense and a lady had a heart attack and several people complained of headaches? I think my friends and I were there mid-October that year and I remember seeing it on the news.
The thing that was great about Alien Encounter: it was a fun thrill “ride” without high G-forces. No one needed Dramamine or sick bags. That so many people were apparently terrified by it is evidence that the story-telling and mechanics were done very well. People must have really thought there was a monster on the loose in MK.
The Splash Mountain re-theme is total nonsense. There was nothing on that ride that wasn't 'inclusive', it's based on African-American folk tales. It was a classic and was loved by everyone.
Oh man, I absolutely LOVED ALIEN ENCOUNTER!!! I remember first riding it and was worried it was a spinning ride, well my mom was. But my sister worked at the park at that time and she's like me HATES spinning rides, so I know it wasn't that. So much fun. Also THANK YOU, I've always felt Dinosaur was tone down to compare to Indy and now I know why. that's why Indy is better. Also, I'm surprised you didn't talk about the MGM (Hollywood) Studios back lot tour. That went through some changes then eventually closed to make way for Galaxy Edge.
OMG I still have the stuffed animal, Skippy, from the extraterrestrial ride. He was at the pre-show and was transported from one tube to another only a couple feet away. He came out kind of burnt and complaining to the tech, who claimed he was just a little toasted. It just reminded me of my mom burning the grilled cheese and trying to downplay it.
1:30 I actually have, and it was a very nice experience. Especially since EPCOT is a long and hot walk, so some air conditioning was always welcome haha.
Did Everest ever take you backwards at the end to see the Yeti again when it worked properly? I thought I remembered this but not positive it really happened . Great episode!
I rode Frozen once, no desire to ride it again. Definitely no made for me. I prefer maelstrom, but I understand that it wasn't that popular. Sad that disney is sacrificing creativity to incorporate IP into everything.
Wow, I've seen the originals of all of these rides except for the original narration of Spaceship Earth. More so than the rides, I miss some of the shows. The original Illuminations with each country being introduced was phenomenal, especially when Gershwin would start and the lights would shine on the American pavilion. I also miss Off Kilter tremendously. They always had a great show at the Canada pavilion....
I remember seeing honey I shrunk the audience as a kid and also remember the honey I shrunk the kids playland in MGM now Hollywood studios and still miss it!
Our family was at Disney in Sept 2022 and I was very disappointed in the Haunted Mansion. The light was turned down so low you couldn't see barely anything. I know they want to make it spooky but if you can't see whats the difference.
We were there a year or two ago and went in HM in the morning and it was super dark. We went again later in the day and the lights were “normal.” Sometimes I think they bump the fader switch a little too much and turn it up when they notice the oops.
I was one of those kids who had the privilege of being at Alien Encounter in the summer of 1995. Most def., the experience left scars, but for another reason: it has become one of the most hilarious memories of my entire life. My childhood friend literally wore the restrains as if it were a T-shirt and had to be helped by a cast member! OMG, 27 years later and I still laugh so much when I remember 😂😂😂😂
No words could describe how 🤩 fun that attraction was went on it close to 10 times once I was there the year I came back that it was gone nearly cried heck at least I have my Skippy Alien that got fried inside
I agree that Alien Encounter was scary, but I didn't realize that guests disliked it so much that they complained until it was gone. I went to the parks when I was around 10 years old or so when Alien Encounter was still a thing and while I was scared during the ride, after it was I fine and it's honestly one of my most lasting memories of that trip. It's disappointing that they took it out because it was too scary because back then the park was rather dull for older kids and teenagers. Rides like Kongfrontation and Earthquake over at Universal made their park a lot more fun for older kids.
POTC used to be a must-do for me; would ride it more than once. But with each change they have made, I find I have to ride it less and less. None of the changes had to be made. The attraction was perfect when it first opened.
I am still to this day scarred by Alien Encounters, to make matters worse when they switched it to Stitches Escape my Dad swore up and down that it wasn’t the same thing. Y’all, it was the same thing. Just as terrifying. As far as childhood experiences there wasn’t anything I hated more than that ride.
AJ does realize that GM Engineering and Chevrolet BOTH fall under the umbrella of General Motors Company (GM) right? I mean if Toyota replaced Ford, that'd be a sponsorship change but one division of GM handing off to another isn't really a change in sponsor.
Basically they didn't have to change the Imagination ride. They just had a horrible idea and went with it against all advice telling them that it was a horrible idea.
also I rode the original version of Kilimanjaro safari, and I still don't see the big deal with it. Like that is reality. It made the ride more thrilling to me because we had to get those poachers! Some folks are sooooo sensitive!
I remember the safari ride with the poachers and I’m happy that part of the plot is gone. It was a downer, and scary for the little kids who thought it was real, and unnecessarily cheesy for the teens and adults who knew it wasn’t real, and I’m glad it’s just a safari ride now. I remember the Honey I Shrunk the Audience! It had some similar effects to the Bug’s Life attraction with mice or snakes crawling up your legs. Kinda glad that’s gone but baffled that Bug’s Life is still there. Both shows were a little *too* interactive to me. Guess because Pixar films are still popular and Honey We Shrunk films are dated. There used to be a Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground as well.
She replied "It STILL wouldn't be worth it!!"
That’s too funny
Despite the context and your specifically saying "Frozen," I *still* misread that as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth!
My Grandpa was a former GM employee and used to take us up to the lounge all the time. It was awesome!
ExtraTERRORestrial was amazing and miss it to this day.
Told my husband all about the safari and was very sad to see it had changed. He never got to see the original version like I did and would love to see it come back with so many others.
8:41 changing from the great movie ride to Runaway railway is the most underwhelming thing Disney had done!
Getting rid of great movie ride is the biggest mistake they’ve made in the parks. It was an emblem of the park and a love letter to movies, not to mention a really cool ride with a great role for cast members. Runaway railway’s sketchy technology fails in comparison.
“Big Red and Little Red…”
*Childhood trauma I didn’t even know I had hits me like a train*
I remember meeting the figment puppet with the Dreamfinder on my first visit in 1985. I still have the pictures. I loved that ride then.
You are right... I will forever hold a grudge about the closing of Great Movie Ride!! One of my favorites
Re: Frozen everywhere. I rode the Jingle Cruise pre-Covid to enjoy the holiday jokes. As we came around the bend to Schweitzer Falls our guide cried out, “Look! The only thing at Disney that isn’t Frozen!”

Man I rode that alien ride when I was around 6 or 7 and I remember it being insane. Definitely freaked me out as a kid
I went on Stitch's Great Escape. I loved it.
Yup rode it when I was 7 and cried but liked it 😂
We absolutely LOVED Alien Encounter at MK when I was a kid!
I loved it so much when I was young I bought the Skippy (the cute alien before you get to the room) backpack when we left the attraction
Been going to Disney since I was a kid thanks to my mom, it has become a yearly trip for me and the family, and now me and my wife go yearly, I rode the original safari many times and as it had a great message I originally thought it was so bad, do miss the original
Any insight as to when the Frozen ever After dessert party going to be reintroduced? It’s on my bucket list!
I thought it was better the original way!
Is there a book or something that has the different Park maps showing the changes over the years? I always thought it would be a cool thing and then have each of them on see thru Mylar that overlay each other. Big seller I bet!
I make magic in Epcot and I can attest to spaceship earth being the prettiest girl in school. I love her.
Alien Encounter was awesome, Disney needs more "scary" attractions. The safari needs to bring back the falling bridge effect as well. Frozen Ever After is an awful, cheap overlay in World Showcase. Alien Encounter in Tomorrowland is still the best attraction I ever saw at WDW. Cowardice is the reason Disney replaced it
Cowardmess or the stupidity of us parents(yes myself included) that ignored the warnings and took my kid on anyway, even after my older child has had a meltdown.
Sorry that teens and adults have to miss out on the genius of Disney Immagineers.

RIP old rides
Alien encounter was one of my favorite attractions when I was a young teen it most definitely wasn't for everyone but me and my father and mother loved it sister not so much lol
i still miss maelstrom, it was one of my favorites when i was little
When I went to Disney with my family in 2015, I remember going into the figment ride and then seeing a sneak peek of Inside Out in the area next to it.
General Motors is the parent company for Chevrolet, so Disney didn't part ways with GM....
I still miss Mr. Toad. I remember doing "Captain Eo" and "Hunny I shrunk the audience "
I went on the original Safari as a young kid and had no idea it changed since then. I knew it was fake since well, it's a theme park! I LOVED that!

Wow... I'm feeling really old right now... my first trip was in 1990. This video brought a lot of flashbacks!! Thanks AJ!!
The Splash Mountain re-theme is total nonsense. There was nothing on that ride that wasn't 'inclusive', it's based on African-American folk tales. It was a classic and was loved by everyone.
The dancing hens weren't inclusive enough
I remember the Alien Encounter one! It was....an experience lol! And Countdown to Extinction also!
Why is there not a Tarzan ride in Animal Kingdom??
I love the Disney/Pixar shorts film festival next to Journey Into Imagination although I do miss Captain EO.
I did have a grudge about the Great Movie Ride until we actually rode Runaway Railway. The Railway is amazing. It is one of our favorites now!
I miss the experience similar the Stitch in the dark with Drew Carry at Hollywood Studios! I squirmed when the bees got loose.
Yes! I believe it was called Sounds Dangerous.
We loved the shorts in October! We also did the Mickey meet & greet there
Oh man, I absolutely LOVED ALIEN ENCOUNTER!!! I remember first riding it and was worried it was a spinning ride, well my mom was. I really miss The Great Movie Ride, Maelstrom, and Backlot Tour!!
Did Everest ever take you backwards at the end to see the Yeti again when it worked properly? I thought I remembered this but not positive it really happened . Great episode!
So why did Figment's ride HAVE to change in the 1st place!?
I DID go see the Pixar short films on my last trip. Great place to sit and get some air for a while
I rode Frozen once, no desire to ride it again. Definitely no made for me. I prefer maelstrom, but I understand that it wasn't that popular. Sad that disney is sacrificing creativity to incorporate IP into everything.
The Alien ride scared me so much as a child when they revamped it to Stitch I still refused to go on it.
I am SOOOOO MAD about the Great Movie Ride!
Still really bummed that they pulled the cultural stuff out of Norway for an IP cashgrab and severely dumbed down Spaceship Earth :/
They shouldn't be changing Splash Mountain.
yes they should, the re theme is going to make one of disney’s best rides even better
The dancing hens are too racist for 2023
We saw the Pixar short films. One of them made me cry. I don’t remember the name, but it was about birds. I’ll have to look it up.
LOVED OFF KILTER. Best country live show by far.
🇨🇦🍁🧡
I remember seeing honey I shrunk the audience as a kid and also remember the honey I shrunk the kids playland in MGM now Hollywood studios and still miss it!
Alien Encounter was really good! But not for kids. So I understand that they needed to make it more familyfriendly but it was a loss.
Love your vids!!
Hello! Can you provide updated information about Cinderella's Royal Table prices now that the princesses are going to be there? Thank you!
Our family was at Disney in Sept 2022 and I was very disappointed in the Haunted Mansion. The light was turned down so low you couldn't see barely anything. I know they want to make it spooky but if you can't see whats the difference.

Miss Maelstrom
Plus Soarin Over California is the superior version and as a local Disneylander you can’t change my mind lol 😂
I was one of those kids who had the privilege of being at Alien Encounter in the summer of 1995. More inclusive? The ride has talking rabbits and dancing hens wtf
I loved Alien Encounter LOL
Fun fact: Alien encounter started life themed to Ridley Scott's Alien. That version never made it off the drawing board
I guess I was a weird child, Alien Encounter didn't scar me. I actually liked it.
Alien encounter, still my favorite ride ever!!!
I miss the Original Test Track. Might as well call it Tron Tracknow!
It’s incredible how anything can be so offensive. This society turns weaker every day! Lord have mercy for my grandkids!!!
Always always watch the Disney and Pixar Shorts! Also, bring back Alien Encounter!! But, put it in HWS.
I remember Honey I Shrunk the Audience!! Amazed me as a kid!!
I agree that Alien Encounter was scary, but I didn't realize that guests disliked it so much that they complained until it was gone. Rides like Kongfrontation and Earthquake over at Universal made their park a lot more fun for older kids.
It will always be "We wants the redhead!"
POTC used to be a must-do for me; would ride it more than once. But with each change they have made, I find I have to ride it less and less. None of the changes had to be made. The attraction was perfect when it first opened.
T minus 9 daysssss till I’m in California adventure park 😊
I miss the great movie ride:(

Y’all, it was the same thing. Just as terrifying. As far as childhood experiences there wasn’t anything I hated more than that ride.
tbh id rather fear for my life from an alien than have Stitch burp in my face. I can’t stand stinky stuff
Dear AJ can you please do rides that changed at Disneyland CA I'm a local there and go with my grandma every week:D
My only memory of going in like 09 or 2010 cant remember, is stitch. I cried and I was like ten or something.
I went to see the Pixar short films! I was one of the 10 people per day who went! lol
Seriously no one goes there
Happy Tuesday, y’all! 🥂🎩🖤
Isn’t Figment about to be the new Mickey?
I miss The Great Movie Ride
Fun fact: the Yeti animatronic was so big, imagineers had to build the mountain AROUND the Yeti.
Love the Pixar shorts, and the cool A/C in EPCOT.
Old enough to vividly remember the original versions of pretty much all of these from my first ever trips to WDW, still can’t afford a house 🤣🤣
I swear I thought I made the elephant storyline up! I totally remember seeing that as a child, and being confused.
also I rode the original version of Kilimanjaro safari, and I still don't see the big deal with it.
I’m surprised the Ellen ride wasn’t mentioned.
