With the right winch the Unimog just needs a good climber and a strong enough fix point, it can go uphill almost vertically with the cable winch.

You can buy them as civilian, just it is quite pricey as it is a work vehicle in the first place. As well as there is a rather large fan community keeping the old ones alive.

I hope that Google translates the following correctly. In Germany we have a very special name for the Unimog: "Eierlegende Wollmilchsau" (jack of all trades). This is a play on words that is very difficult to translate. It is simply a synonym for "jack of all trades".
And the Unimog can really do that. There are really only very few, almost rare, moments when a Unimog does not manage to solve the task. But these moments are almost as rare as winning the lottery.

"Egglaying-Wool-Milk-Pig" would be a literal translation, a farm animal that can do it all (again, jack of all trades) pretty fitting for a vehicle which was supposed to be a mechanical oxen to replace the real ones.
Its name is an abbreviation of UNivesal MOtor Gerät (Universal Motor Device), these days you barely see them being used as tractors, but they are a great platform to build upon if you need a vehicle to do something very specific or fill several roles occasionally.

You should not watch an *American* talking about a Unimog but simply look after the original german "brand videos" that show off the capabilities without drugs-inflicted chattering ...
Given that guy would have taken a ride in one with i.e. a factory or army Unimog instructor he'd shit his pants. I did that once - Well - drive with a military instructor. Since I live in Germany. And since we have a large army battallion on a prooving ground near by. And there was this "soldiers day" some time in autumn of 1978. I think. I recall I already had my driving license - and was keen to get a seat for a test ride. It took about 10 minutes. And after *that* I gained a hell of respect for these Unimogs. And how fear-inflicting a 45° downward angle can be from atop a 25 meters (or 60 feet) hill. We drove it up ... which was nice, since you had the seatrest in your neck ... and we drove it down ... where you thanked the gods of strong textile for the darned stiff seatbelts. Without them you had kissed the windscreen. See the factory videos. Or at least one from a guy with more practical experience than this chatbox-guy.
    😁
