    The American sports market has been a victim of its own success. The product has been optimized for television and not in person viewing. Cameras angles, graphic overlays, etc. I can go all day on how fans are on the outside of the changes. The money is pumped in through cooperate sponsors and TV deals. Fans aren’t as important anymore.

      @@CarlosRenfroe But nothing HAS changed. The NBA has never been a sellout crowd sport. Ever. Sure, great teams sell out games, but even they don't sell them all out, and most teams barely sell half the seats. That's been true since literally the 70s, before any "changes". The NBA didn't devolve to this state; its never been better than this state.

    • @CarlosRenfroe
      @CarlosRenfroe 8 месяцев назад +5

      @@Tijuanabill You're missing my point. You're arguing something that I never said. If you look at my original comment, it's a parallel to American sports in general. I never said that the NBA was a crowd-sell-out sport. It's not college basketball. However, you can certainly see a shift in the approach to fans in recent years. You can even see it in the decline in ratings. Just this year, the commissioner had to institute a 65-game minimum statute to qualify for the MVP award largely because of load management. The league is easily and visibly different in its approach to fans and it's largely due to the increase in cooperate brand money, foreign interests, and multi-billion dollar TV deals. It's even happening some in college football. The commentary about this is everywhere Bro.

    Serbian here. Crvena zvezda club (Belgrade, Serbia) is the one in red and white that was shown where everybody was jumping at the same time. Basketball in our country is like a religion, we dont come to games to post stories and drink beer. We come to jump and sing for 2 hours and make a show of our own. And no, it's not only pregame. Greek crowd is the only other one you can compare to Serbian.

    Another difference is that European teams are usually "Athletic Clubs" that also have football teams and the fans bring the passions of the stadiums to the Arena. It's the same in North Africa to.a certain degree, here in Morocco for example some football fans show up to basketball or handball games to support the team even if they don't care much about the sport, just for the sake of the colours. I could say that in Europe, North Africa, Latin America, the club is like second motherland. It's very different from the franchise system in the USA. Perhaps college ball is the closest thing since universities are strongly anchored into the identity of the city or the state same as sports clubs in other parts of the world.

    I think the passion towards football/basketball clubs in Europe comes from tradition. My father was a supporter of Dinamo Zagreb, my grandfather also, everybody in my family too. You are born into it most of the time. Its more like a religion. In United States the club is just a company that can move to another city if you have the money, in Europe the club is deeply rooted in the community for more than 100 years and in a way represents your town or entire state and all sort of views of that community. Also, supporting some clubs you are showing your political stance, sometimes showing rebelion towards some views etc. Football club is like your first love, you cannot change support to some other team, everything in life can change, but that cannot. I think the passion comes from that. There are also stuff like Ultras and hooligans, "normal" fans etc, but thats another topic :D

    The NBA Playoffs are a different animal. They dont dance and sing but they are intense. Watch the Celtics/Lakers - Bird vs Magic playoffs. Insane. And Madison Square Garden NY Knicks playoffs games - like the game tonight. Off the charts

    So for the first European video:
    It's the derby between Aris and PAOK Thessaloniki. The power went out, that's why it was so dark and people had their phones out.
    Not going to translate the first chant, it's a bunch of bad words toward the opponents and their family :D.

    I've often wondered if the sports franchise system in America weakened bonds of identity with their host communities. It seems rather mercenary how players and even teams change locations. I would guess that some significant number of fans are more loyal to players than teams.

    The frequency of games matters. NBA, MLB and College Basketball play too many games... fans don't get as excited by 4 games a week. Monday Night or Thursday night Football is an event. I wonder if that is part of the difference?

    I am 78 (English).... and followed football, and to a lesser degree, cricket, all my life. I have no idea if basketball is played in the UK. I guess it must be, somewhere . I guess knowing the name Michael Jordan is something! But I have never met anyone with the slightest interest in the sport.

    For sheer chaos, nothing I've seen here surpasses the ending of the 2022 Alabama-Tennessee college football game, won by Tennessee on a last second field goal. The goalposts were taken down by the Tennessee fans and thrown into the Tennessee river, for Pete's sake. That said, the Europeans here were more intense than the American ones in my view. Flares? Crazy! And it seemed more of the crowd was involved than with the US examples. There may be some cultural factors at work too. Of course, these examples are cherry-picked; there are US videos that are quite intense.
