Costs for everything these days is disgusting! I spent April in AZ and haven't left IA since. Hope things change for the better soon but I feel that won't happen. Safe journey. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
[ Smiling ] Oh noooo, pie is important; it is like the gas you have to have it!
Yep, you and I understand what's important!
I camped in Mammoth Lakes California a few weeks ago... the cheapest gas was $6.15 and propane was $5/gal, yikes! Dropping fast food will likely extend your life ;o)
Like you guys we are retired also. We no longer travel around the country stopping for a night or two. This summer we went one state over and stayed for a month in one place to get out of the Oklahoma heat.
There’s coming a time when we won’t be allowed to travel at all.
Thanks so much for your videos.
Thank you for watching. I hear you...
Ugh, I hope we get the chance to travel. My husband retires at age 62, in a year and a half and I'm so nervous that a lot is going to change between now and then.
Why won't you be allowed to travel?
Being this video is about getting out and about on the cheap, ya might want to do a video about how you find your camping spots either free or on the cheap....Thanks for bringing us along on the ride...Travel safe, be well....
Will do
I bump my tire pressure up too. But realize that this can make your vehicle more prone to skidding around corners and sudden braking. Especially in the rain. So drive accordingly.
One good thing about high road travel expenses is maybe you won't need to replace your engine and/or transmission after all.
Safe, cheap, effective to battle massed flies is spray them with a solution of dish liquid - about 1/30 ratio. Kills almost on contact. They may flop around on the ground a while. But they're doomed. Then just wipe up the soap solution - cleans up as you go. And no toxic fumes lingering inside your rig.
You can bet I'll be trying your fly spray.
I know! Getting ready for a trip is always time consuming. Plus once I’m out on the trip I always remember something I forgot to pack. Guess I need a check list and give my brain a rest. 😎
We should have a checklist and need to put that on our checklist!
Rick and Linda, you two absolutely deserve to enjoy your golden time with a resonable budget. Do as you can afford, why not?
Thanks for taking us along for your road trip adventure. I sure hope those gas prices start coming back down soon. It’s definitely impacting us a lot as well
When we retired we always stayed at least a week or month to take advantage of the discount at parks, or boondock. After a couple of years we started volunteering at state parks to save money and stay in areas that are beautiful. Just a suggestion
Thanks for your videos , they have inspired me to build my own small ( to me) camper out of a semi sleeper .
That is awesome!
How’s the project going?
@@mfcarney almost done , my grandkids and wife have camped in it , and I sent a night in it this winter to figure out what it takes to heat it , so now it's down to the little things .
Thanks for clearing up the pie issue. I was starting to wonder! 😊
Hi Linda and Rick.. you stay at some beautiful spots. Safe Travels! 🙂
I'm sure you do also! Thanks for watching.
"I break for Pie" bumper sticker needed. Crazy prices for everything. And they're still rising. Just wait, when the majority of vehicles on the roads are EV's, the price of electricity will triple. I can see it now. Why, because we would all need more electricity. Too bad cars don't run on pies. Think of the pleasant smell cars would emit. You 2 be safe out there and thanks for taking us along again.
I like your bumper sticker idea!
Yall have fun and be safe, we finally left Idaho yesterday, going to spend 2 or 3 days in Wyoming, probably hit Mount Rushmore before turning south for Arkansas. We have decided to spend next summer in Hermon Maine work camping at a campground there.
That's a good way to do it! I hope you enjoy your stay in Maine. There are some beautiful places to camp around the Mt. Rushmore area and don't forget Bobkat's Purple Pie Place in Custer, SD.
Great video you two. We're feeling the high gas price crunch but like you were cutting elsewhere to fill the tank. 🤠
I think it can work, the last 5 days we've spent nothing out here in the wilderness.
Your videos are so good we look forward to them 😊 y'all have a great setup kinda similar to my wife and mine 2002 Chevy truck and a 16' cargo conversation we're heading out for a short camping trip this weekend can't wait 😊
Good for you guys! My friend, Wil, has a 16' cargo conversion and it's really comfy.
Glad you cleared up the pie issue early... I thought we were headed for armageddon! Safe travels!
Thank you Rick and Linda, another great video!
Thank you, John, that's very nice of you.
To be clear, Rick... Pie is not a meal, it is a delight!🤗
You two are a great example of how to make your life happy regardless of economic hard times. My ace in the hole is to travel to the Philippines my wife's home country and wait it out...enjoy your pie😊
Linda was raised and went to school with the Filipinos on Molokai, HI. Love those people and their cuisine is my favorite.
@@gonagainmy son just went to the Philippines to meet his friend.🎉😊
You're right. A RUclips channel is full time! Right now sewing curtains for the Aliner and I finished the hatch door where the a/c was. Enjoy Nevada you two!!
Get to work! Any more cmping/roadtrips planned?
@@gonagain Not this year. We might just do one or two fall weekenders with the leaves changing. Getting ready for ski season. Might do a couple in ski resorts.
Rick and Linda. I am lucky here in east Tennessee . I bought regular gas yesterday for 2.98 a gallon. There does seem to be wild fluctuations tho. Many places are 3.50 . I fear that the worst is yet to come. Stay safe and enjoy the fall weather. Great Video.
Yes and for the first time we are using our AAA ap to find the lowest prices in each town because it varies so much. Gas Buddy would work too I guess. Thanks, Dennis.
Got my America the beautiful pass on my 65th Birthday! Best present 🎁 ever!
Thanks for making this video very encouraging during these screwed up times!
You are so right about the beauty of removing yourselves from the daily grind at home. When we were raiding our three children we had a small very old travel trailer and parked it in the Adirondack mountains in New York, a little more than two hours from our home. We travel there every weekend and v summer vacation. When we were there all our worries disappeared for that short time. Our adult children tell there children stories of those day with so much enthusiasm. Love your videos and down to earth logical thinking.
Thank you for watching!
We love road trips even if it’s just for the day. Have an awesome adventure!
Us too!
Thank you, U two.
Thank You for the videos, my wife is disabled and we can't travel your videos help to stay at home.
Hello Jeff, we're glad that our videos somehow brightens your days at home. We certainly appreciate that we are able to do what we do at our age. We're happy to "bring you all along" with us.
Glad you guys got out, stay safe and healthy.
Thanks, nice to "see" you!
So glad you cleared up about the pie. I was beginning to be worried. I was thinking of maybe purchasing a portable shower tent. I don't know. Still thinking about it.
We always preferred the less expensive and easy to use "pop-up" style shower tents. It takes awhile to learn how to coil it back up though!
Yeah. That's kind of what I was talking about. They work well for you?
I have a pop up shower tent which I have used. It wasn’t expensive and worked well. Be sure to anchor it if it is windy! The only thing I still can’t do quickly is put it away. There’s a knack to folding it up !
Speaking of hamburgers reminds me of 1963 in Wyoming. Went on a baseball trip and after the game stopped at McDonalds. I had 4 hamburgers, fries and a coke and gave them a $1.00 bill. I got change, too. Hamburgers were 15 cents each.
I remember those days! How about a Snickers bar for 5 cents? That was 1956
Yep, I remember those days, too.@@gonagain
Our gas prices aren't low here, but they are nowhere near the highest they have been in my lifetime.
Those flies were crazy. I saw the pilot coming out in with those vehicle checks. Kind of like the preflight checklist. 👍. When we travel, I don’t check my vehicle every morning. I give it the “once over” at every fuel stop and I also do a trailer walk around.
Awesome trip and views. Y’all stay safe and enjoy it !
Thank you! Will do!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who finds stuff that expired 3 years ago! Love your videos.
Thank you!! 😊 We have videos that go waaaay back to 2008!
We are right there with ya! $25 for 2 combo's at BK??! That was a couple of weeks ago! But yes, who can afford $65 a night?! Most of the time, with just electric and water hookup, there is no sewer hookup on site. We use our golden buckeye card to get 50% off in Ohio state parks, but that is only Sunday - Thursday. Then it's just 10% off. We got the America the Beautiful access pass we're planning to use that in Texas at COE campgrounds, and that should be about 50% off. If we get into NM, then we will BLM it. But you're right, it gets expensive real quick😢
BK does 3 dollar whopper Wednesdays, and usually will do a BOGO once in a while, ....all via the app of course, but you'll slowly gain points so you can get a fry or a drink for free here and there. And if you're staying local typically you can fill out a survey on the back of the receipt and you'll get a free whopper with any purchase but it's only good at the location you are being asked to survey. A don't forget for those with culver's in their travels , if you order a kids meal (even as a big kid) the bag has a coupon printed on it for a free ice cream...So Do a kids meal at one culvers, rip the ice cream coupon off the bag and the next culver's you stumble upon redeem that ice cream coupon.
@markbajek2541 Not around here, friend.
Great video Rick & Linda,
Lots of great advice. My wife & I used to stop in Truck Stops and use the shower there when we were traveling & dry camping. It was about $12.50 for a truck stop shower, as opposed to $55 & up for a campground. Instead of spending $12.50 each for a shower, we just bought 1 shower and then showered together to save $$.
Have a great week. Safe travels.
JT
That's a great tip, JT, thank you.
I surely enjoy your wilderness adventures, Keep up the good works. And Enjoy yourself’s !
Thanks, Mike, will do!
Beautiful camping area you stopped at in Idaho, like that cigar!!
“I wasn’t talking about Pie” 😂😂😂😂😂
Great video guys ❤
Fabulous video, be blessed!
Rick, you mentioned in the video always check the weather and you emphasized how important that was. One problem people have is understanding the weather and what’s coming next. You like me are pilots were weather is life and death. It’s a big difference watching weather and knowing weather as pilots do. Maybe when you are in unpleasant weather conditions you with your teaching skills could pass on your pilot weather skills!!
Always enjoy your stories and adventures. Hope my interests help you keep the adventures 🙏 going.
Thanks for watching, we really appreciate it.
I've been watching you guys since you met shoestring at the hobo convention, also im about to travel around, I've been watching your channel for great advice, thanks.
Thank you, Robert. I continue to keep in daily contact with Showstring because he's a good guy.
Hang in there.😊
Thanks!
Thank you, Robin!!!
We are cutting back with fast food too. Gas is SO expensive we are making our own food to save money. BYW great video- love some of your special effects and video shots -ie dust in the wind. Yeeha
just finished ur video..thanks rick n linda..great info on the expenses, I think it helps alot of travelers..ur the best !
Thank you!
Nice video
Enjoyed another fine video.
Thanks, Todd. Hope you're doing well and enjoying the fall season.
Such a good video.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
A must see the train exhibition, in Ely Navada. Spend a day or two see hands on Railroad work. Lots of history too. thank you stay safe all
I could not get the super chat to work, I'll give some gas money soon Thanks you guys
Thanks, Jeff.
Still can't get the super chat to work
Great video guys 😁👍
Thanks, Paul. Are you goung to AZ this winter?
@@gonagainThat's the plan..a little later this year tho. I dallied making Dr appts and the last one is in mid Dec 🧐🤔
A couple of frozen burgers chopped and cooked or a can of cooked chicken, some ready-made soup from a can or box, a handful of frozen or quick-chopped fresh veggies, and a bag of pre-cooked rice or pasta, or a couple of torn up slices of a hearty loaf bread... Presto! A hearty, hot meal that can be ready in no more time than it takes to wait in line at the fast food joint. A quick rinse of the pot, to be more thoroughly washed later at camp. Alternatively, a bag of ready-made salad, a tin of tuna or sardines, some crumbled feta, a drizzle of dressing, and some crackers... even faster. And you get to choose the level of healthy based on the brands you buy... no mystery restaurant "nutrition".
😂😂😂YES, pie!
We go the same way you are now. We have "Kits" for making coffee, quick lunchs, etc ready at hand in the trailer. Always looking for those city parks for our meals when on the road. They usually have some water as a bonus too. We really try to hit the National parks and Core of Engineer parks if we have to do a camp ground. Passes make them very affordable. You definitely missed a great place to stop though by passing up Craters, what an awesome place. Put it on your list for the way back.
Love that campground really good Boondocking 1/4mile farther, always stop there after leaving home(Clark Fork Id)❤
Black flies seem to be bad everywhere this year!!!!! enjoy your trip . 😊
That is called pie priority!
On my camper I got a water to water heat exchanger that runs off with the engine for hot water It's nice to have a hot shower and do dishes. Great video
Nice hot water set-up.
We are planning much the same travels. As I am for the rest of my life..travel in a camper during winter south & live on my boat (all utilities included) in the Great Lakes and further. Idk, maybe there should be another term for "anchoring out" b/c boondocking seems perfect on land. Absolutely pie is necessary. Be well.
Thank you, Ann. I miss living out at anchor, now we are anchored to our house. Hope to see you down the road sometime.
Met you guys through old Shoestring and I really enjoy your videos. Just subscribed and I hope y'all have a wonderful day.✌️🤠 Brian
Shoestring is a great guy! Thanks for subscribing!
Oh wow super cool for you to take time out of your day to reply. Hope you and Hobo can meet up again soon ya'll have great conversations.@@gonagain
I'd like to travel but yeah it's getting to expensive
for traveling especially long trips and not only is
gas expensive eating out at restaurants and the
fast food places as well, have a great weekend
and stay safe in your travels,Thank You.🤠👋
🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Great show Yall usual
Thank you!
I have seen videos of the Australian outback. Anywhere there is water theirs flies. They fly into your mouth nose and eyes so thickly you have to wear a net.
Spent a week with the family at a campground south of Ely near the Ward charcoal ovens. One of our side trips was up over success summit what a beautiful valley between the Schell creek range and the mountains above Ely there is a side trail near the top that goes uo to the top of the mountain above Ely you might make on your bike I did it on my atv.
Thanks for that tip!
When I was a kid every summer my Dad would take us to a Cabin in the Morongo Valley in California that he and a friend built in the 1960s the night before going my Mom would pack up all the things we needed for the trip and then my Dad would wake me up at 4am to hit the road, but it was always fun. We would hunt quail and rabbits on the property for extra food. For the quail my Dad used his 12g shotgun and for the rabbits his Rimington 22g rifle. His friend who owned the cabin only used it one time, but after seeing a snake near the cabin he never went back, so my Dad was able to use the cabin anytime he wanted and it all was free.
Not sure what year your truck is or how many miles you have on it, but I remember there being a GM TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for high oil consumption on Vortec V8s and V6, this bulletin was for a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve cover replacement with a new design valve cover. This problem over time could also cause a misfire code to set if the PCV plugged up and the oil consumption problem would foul up a spark plug. You may be able to Google your VIN number located (on the dash upper driver's side below the windshield) to find out if your truck is one that needs the updated parts. Good luck and have fun on your trip, Mike in Oregon. GM/Delco ASE Master Technician.
Hello Mike and thank you for the nice memories of the cabin. It's been a long time since I've tasted rabbit, but we used to have it once in awhile while I was growing up. I remember checking my VIN# for that issue and my car wasn't affected, but I change the PVC valve periodically just in case. I'm leaking the oil through the rear main seal and will just live with it for now. Thank you for your great suggestions and stories!
They make an oil stop leak, but am not sure how well they work. I've never used them. Good luck. @@gonagain
Even a ride on the ole harley is getting shorter and shorter, i can't afford to pay attention, at least i can watch yall travel as long as I can afford to pay the phone bill lol. Have a blessed day
Sad we have to stay home right now ,hope gas prices go down down ?😂 thank you for the video?❤❤❤❤
My husband and I enjoy your channel so much. We have traveled the west extensively and love it. We live in lower part of Louisiana. We want to go back out west again but the gas prices have held us back. We have a C class MH and it is expensive to run. Do you ever get up around Libby Montana? I
f so I would love to see you make a video. When we were much younger we bought a lot on a beautiful little island on Bull Lake called Angel Island out of Libby MT. We had high hopes of moving there but life had other plans for us. We would love to take a nostalgic trip back again. Y'all keep making those interesting videos because that is our intertainment.
Thanks for watching our videos, Jeanette. We haven't up around Libby in a few years, we did a video where we went on the swinging bridge near Kootenai Falls. A bit of trivia info: Rick's dad worked on building the Libby Dam.
good presentation - OldTony
My son lives in Ely, love it there. Headed that way in a couple weeks. Play safe.
We love this area!
Good video, and definitely the higher costs are impacting us all, especially with gas a nd food costs. Now Rick a video on the trailer bike rack would be helpful, we have bikes and no room to take them.
Great suggestion!
Like# 2,1?? - Woot - Tire pressure is huge, I purchased a battery operated tire pump (Rigid) that has the power to pump up all 8 of my tires. It takes 2 x 6amp batteries to fill them all. But when you're out in the wild and you've lost tire pressure over time, or someone had ventured out and needs to air up - I now have the capability to stay safe. I carry 30ish amp of batteries fueled by the sun, so always have enough power to air up.
I just picked up a small Milwaukee pump, but it's slow.
Gas near me here in Texas is better than other places but I commute about 90-100 miles a day to work and yesterday best gas price for regular was $3.15 a gallon and my son commutes almost as for and occasionally I have to help him so yes it is higher than ever nin my lifetime to just live, I am 75 yrs old so have seen it for several years
Flies: wild flies want out towards sunlight so they can be chased out with a hat or a towel or… house flies are called that for a reason - they can out turn a Pitts Special to fly back inside an open car window at 50 mph. I-15 is not the worst interstate scenery wise.
If you guys remember we have an unfinished pie appointment…
Great video safe travels
I don't think Rick would forget a pie appointment! Are you going to be passing thru our way or are we seeing you in AZ?
Lotsa obsidian in Nevada. Many times unrecognizable because of being sand blasted . Heading toward Tonopah from the north on 95 across from the Silver Peak turn off, sharp eye will find it.
Good video. Gas where i am in north Texas is 3.49.9.
Had to laugh at your battle with flies as I have also had a run in with those pesky flies. If you’re ever in Custer National Forest in South ? or North Dakota beware of the flies in the pit toilets in Picnic Springs. As I was walking Freckles I thought I would stop off as it was about a quarter mile from our campsite. 50’ away I thought someone was using a chainsaw the sound was so loud. The outside was literally covered in hundreds of flies and being curious I opened the door 😮 and the walls were black! Needless to say didn’t stay long!😂
Yikes, that's bad! We stopped at roadside park in Kansas that was clean and well manicured with a single outhouse. What we thought was the sound of farm euipment turned out to be the flies in that outhouse!
My RV that's parked on my prairie property was invaded by flies last year. Hundreds. Nasty critters. I tried everything and spent countless hours trying to rid the place of them. What turned out the easiest was buying a hand vac with a long nozzle. I spent a while sucking all those varmints up and won't be without one again.
Good idea.
Hey Rick & Linda, buy a Raid fly stick and hang one or two in your car when you’re stopped. Won’t get rid of all but might make a difference. Just a caution, those things are REALLY sticky so you don’t want it touching anything. I live in a rural area and every time I open my door the flies come in. The fly stick is the only thing that keeps my house clear.
We talked about those and are putting it on our list of supplies.
Wow, glad you clarified that about the pie 🥧, you had me scared for a minute, was just getting ready to complain. Lol. What on earth was attacking all the flies or causing them to be in that area? Reminds me of once when I was a kid and we were camping along some canals in an agricultural area west of Yuma. We had gone there to frog 🐸 hunt and fish, the first night we made the mistake of not cooking and eating before dark. As soon as you turned on any kind of light it attracted 100’s of bugs of all sorts. The trick was to dish your plate and get to the dark and then imagine you weren’t eating bugs because they were all at the light…..seemed to work…. I think.
Our childhood adventures were the best, too bad so many young ones today cant have that kind of adventure. Nice to see you!
:) THANKS AGAIN for another GREAT Share and Video! I am GLAD you clarified, will still be able to STOP for Pie!! I think Gas Prices are really cutting into all of us :( WA State was MOST EXPENSIVE @ $5 + a gallon :( Definitely put off some my travel plans for sure. ALL the BEST and safe travels! Cheers from the upper left corner! :)
We have our priorities (pie-orities), lol. Gas is crazy high in WA and CA.
Thanks again for sharing! Gas is just nuts here, and was over $5 before Laour Day :( Enjoy some Pie for Meeeeee! ALL the BEST!!@@gonagain
Lots of obsidian to be found in southern Idaho.
Thanks for sharing. Yep pie is worth it. You could be spending your money on worse things then camping. Relax and enjoy.
Thanks, Dee!
Another excellent video. I am going to buy a small cargo trailer for camping after watching your videos and others. BTW, I just sent you a little money to keep you exploring and living free.
Awesome! Thank you very much!
Finally finished watching your video .i really enjoy. Sick and PO! Of these gas prices no reason for it. Feds have no business messy with oil production should be controlled by the states. I drove all the way to las vegas in my tundra with the V8and other places in between. Spent aroound 1000 for gas. Drove from 0hio to vegas and back. On course many states in between utah Colorado , nebraska ,iowa Illinois, Indiana and finally back to ohio. Whew was a expensive trip.
We know how you feel. Our trip to Florida was not easy on the wallet. That was a 7000 mile trip, yikes.
On the subject on gas mileage. Newer vehicles, ive learned, do much better on gas. I recently bought a new XL F350 4dr 4wd that i put a large truck camper on AND tow a 16ft enclosed trailer loaded with toys. I drive on average 60 mph and get between 10 and 11 mpg. My truck has the new 7.3 gas engine and the 10spd tranny. I'm 50 and it's my first new vehicle. When its paid for i will buy another new one. I have decided that a truck payment will be the only big payment i have for the rest of my (hopefully long) life. Keep in mind, my truck is a base model, i ordered it with a few options. Definitely not fancy. Great videos! Thanks for putting in the time and effort and i hope the extra money is good!
Thank you for sharing your mileage results with us all. Appreciate your input, Matthew.
I wasn't talking about Pie, just so we are clear on that.😂
No worries, I’ll bet Linda can make a mean fruit pie in the Insta pot, 🥧
WHOOHOO🎉❤️‼️On the road again...with pie🥧😂 and cowboy coffee❤ we got those 🪰crazy flies🪰 up here too at homebase. So annoying🪰 we are totally crazy busy with renos with a fellow Freedom Fighter hired to help, its been a total blast!!! 🛻🇨🇦❤️‼️ we Canadians are gearing up for something big...🚙🇨🇦🛻🇨🇦🚗🇨🇦🚚🇨🇦😘🙋♀️❤️‼️
Hope your renovations go smoothly, Jane. And keep us in the loop, good luck to you all.
If you got to Ely then cut over to Milford Utah. Head north towards delta. But only 25 to 30 miles there is a road that will cross over to I-15 but in-between there you will find an actual white speckle obsidian mine.
Thanks, that sounds like a good place to explore!
I know everyone is touchy about lubricants, but, here's my opinion. I uber/lyft about 1000mi a week around my county. I use Penzoil Ultra Platinum...as soon as you start your engine you'll notice a difference! Really amazing stuff.. and I can't stress enough, Motokote, that alone added one mile per gallon extra and with the Penzoil 1.5-2 mi per gallon. Like having an extra gallon per tank. I have a crown vic 4.6l with a quarter million miles. I recently pulled the plugs w 100k+... absolutely pristine. About 500 miles before change 8oz of mystery oil goes in. Today's engines demand clean timing chains! At 8k the oil is still brown and opaque.
Good tips and info, thank you!
Road trips are fun but it’s getting expensive. We live in Idaho and there are so many beautiful and clean camping places here. Flies are bad this time of year especially if you are around livestock. We are staying close to home this year with our camper. We are fortunate we are surrounded with blm and national forest lands less than an hours drive in several directions. It’s interesting so see your costs.
Idaho is full of beautiful camping spots and great fishing too. We've sure enjoyed our camping in Idaho!
Sold my 5x10 conversion and just drove to Houston from Laredo. Mileage in my GMC Acadia was 23.2 mpg. Coming back with my new 6x12??? 9.2 mpg. That was driving 60 mph. That stinks. Oh, I got my Gonagain sticker, It's going on the back of the new trailer. Drive safe, see you Quartszite in January I hope.
We're excited for your new build. That size will make a nice trailer which we'll hopefully get to see in Q.
