  • Let's talk about testosterone. The Galveston Diet and Mary Claire Wellness are all curated FOR the menopausal woman. This is our specialty. Hormone replacement therapy is important during this stage of a woman's life if done CORRECTLY. We are not little men. We are not supposed to have the same amount of testosterone as men. It is simply a small replacement. Many physicians overdose testosterone and it is unacceptable. If this feels like it could be happening to you, here are links to help you learn to talk to your physician.

    - About Dr. Mary Claire Haver and The Galveston Diet -
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a passionate women’s health advocate who believes women in midlife deserve to live their best life. She cuts through fat-shaming and fads, so women are empowered with the science behind anti-inflammation nutrition.
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a wife, mom, physician, and entrepreneur who has devoted her adult life to women’s health. As a Board-Certified OBGYN in the Houston area, Dr. Haver has delivered thousands of babies, completed thousands of well-woman exams, counseled patients, taught residents, and did everything an academic professor and OBGYN could do.
As her patient population aged, Dr. Haver was overwhelmed with the number of complaints and concerns her patients had with weight gain while going through menopause. For years, she told her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn't until she experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice doesn't work and ultimately led to her creating and developing a new program, The Galveston Diet.
The Galveston Diet is the first and only nutrition program created by a Female OBGYN, designed for women in menopause. The Galveston Diet helps women reach their health and wellness goals through an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition. Dr. Haver believes in food's power to combat inflammation and highly recommends the unlimited benefits of intermittent fasting. As part of her ongoing research, she became certified in Culinary Medicine in 2019, specializing in medical nutrition.

The reason you see so many angry women in these comments is b/c nobody has helped us. I’ve never had a hormonal panel/blood work up done in my entire life even though im a classic menopausal disaster.
Most of us have kids, grandkids, elder parents we’re taking care of, jobs, pets, total care of the house, etc. Many of us are the PRIMARY source of everything for our families and we feel like crap and are treated like crap!
I go through my very busy days every day exhausted on a level that I should be hospitalized. Cold, tired, dizzy, severely depressed, can’t sleep, flu like body aches constantly, headaches, poor appetite, anxiety through the roof. Yeah, it’s a fun day being me. My doctor sells the pellets and I kept telling them that I was getting too much testosterone and they blew me off. Finally I told them no more but too late for the irreversible side effects. They wanted me to keep going while they treated the side effects. How can they call themselves professionals when they know they are causing women harm by overdosing with the pellets. The money is more important than integrity. Dr. Mary is a true hero for women!!! She’s in it for the truth. Changes not in a good way to the appearance of my private area which also doesn’t go away. During the therapy testosterone made me moody and aggressive. The behavior changes do go away after you stop taking testosterone. It’s really sad. I probably would have benefited from a small dose but now I am too afraid of getting an overdose to take it again. This is why the FDA and research studies should figure out the right treatment for women so that pellet manufacturers and doctors aren’t experimenting on us.

Also-you can get overdosed with testosterone if your husband is using topical testosterone cream and you touch or rub that site. It happened to me, I was sick for 6 months and had horrible mood swings and rage. It turned out I was getting large amount of testosterone every day by simply having skin to skin contact. His doctor never warned him about that. I was lucky to have discovered it through a hormone test. I was starting to have chest pain too, it’s no joke, my testosterone levels were astronomically high. If you are a woman you have to be careful when taking testosterone because once it makes changes to your body it tends to be irreversible. You may experience a deeper voice, more body hair, and it can also cause things like a sharper jaw line like men have. These things can happen even with small doses of testosterone. As I have said, once your body makes these changes it is extremely hard or even impossible to go back to how you used to be. It is super important that your doctor gives you multiple blood tests over time so they can check to see what your body needs and so they don't over dose you with testosterone.

Why would you titrate off HRT if they give you protection from Alzheimer’s, heart disease and osteoporosis? We wouldn’t titrate down on thyroid if we had hypothyroidism or insulin if you’re a diabetic. These hormones give us protection if used at the appropriate effective dose. It’s not just for managing symptoms at the lowest dose. This is backwards.

The part about testing your hormones was probably ok if you’re still having periods, the levels of your FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone) and the number can change drastically depending on where you’re at in your cycle. They probably went off of your symptoms like hot flashes. If you still have your uterus you should be on both Estrogen and Progesterone. I’m not a doctor so you need to actually talk to a doctor about this but I am an RN who recently went through Menopause and I’m telling you what my doctor told me. When I freaked out about it, she said my SHBG number was so high, it was binding up most of my free testosterone and I was still considered to be low in testosterone. No one ever seems to talk about this SHBG number in relation to calculating true testosterone level. I go to the top hormone specialist docs in AZ, BTW. That’s all they do, hormones. I'm turning 38 in February and because of you I realized that all my other symptoms could be LOW ESTROGEN. I'm still nursing my 1 year old just 2-3 times a day. Just before naps and bedtime. I think it could be my age and the nursing that causing it. SO GRATEFUL to find your channel and now I can at least have a great heads up!! I do not have a good relationship with my mother at all so I wouldn't have known a single thing about Menopause and I had never even known it's just a one time event and there's a build up before it and the effects after. I was so uninformed!!! I don't have hot flashes, but I cannot sleep, I have EXTREMELY dry skin, thin hair at my temples that keeps growing back and then thinning again, I've changed my shampoos and conditioners thinking it was that. I've been so moody just today I was getting overly emotional and crying as if I was a pregnant woman! My neck has been itching like crazy. I feel so much stress in my neck and shoulders all day long it causes me to feel fatigue and NOT wanting to leave the house. I'm just a stay-at-home Mother with a 4 year old and 1 year old. It feels like that's all I can manage and anything else is too much. I'm always just trying to take 5 min to do deep breaths, been drinking "Positive Energy" Tea which helps so much with the ashwaghanda!! But now I'm going to look into other herbal supplements. I've been bingewatching your channel now all week!!!

Nursing may be causing some of those symptoms. I nursed all 6 of mine and loved it but it does make it like “pseudo menopause”. I used a little estrogen cream after one or two of mine in that nursing time and it sort of primed the pump and things got better. Just an idea! I think that happened a little more as I got older (36 and 38 for my last).
If there is dryness vaginally, that’s a sure sign.

If a person desires to transition, wouldn't the amount of T they are receiving be unhealthy for their female endocrine sys? Your comment about a possible tumor over 90 gave me pause cuz I wondered how it could be horrible for a woman to be at 250+T level but then at the same second it be OK if they wanted to transition. I love your content and usually (always!) find your ideas so logical. This one has me stumped 😮

You are correct. It’s an ok for thee but not thou scenario. If you’re transitioning then doctors are fine with your hormones being completely out of wack but if you’re a woman who just wants to increase bone density, increase libido, improve overall mood, help add some skeletal muscle then you’ll be shamed about how dangerous it is. Before anyone comes at me, I think both scenarios are fine as long as they understand the risks involved. Having 90 or above naturally would set off alarms bc something is causing it but to have 90 or above is not what is causing cancer. Instead of saying this is what a normal female reference range is, doctors should be explaining possible side effects at certain ranges. The dose makes the poison so at what levels do women begin seeing the negative side effects? That should be the purpose here

I just found out today from my hormone specialist that I have a testosterone level of 258. This is the first post I have seen online and I’ve been searching for about two hours now about overdosing of testosterone. I’m so thankful to have found this! I’ve been taking 5 mg cream daily for over a year for energy and libido and have been experiencing extreme anxiety and depression. My doc suggested going cold turkey and starting on progesterone as I am nine days before my period. Can you speak to how to titrate off of testosterone safely? everything I’ve seen online about going cold turkey talks about getting anxiety and depression, which is exactly what I’m just trying to get out of. I’m calling my doctor back again tomorrow, but shooting for the moon for a reply tonight! Whenever you can, I am grateful to get a second opinion! Thank you so much for your time and expertise!

I began estradiol topical gel day after my complete hysterectomy 4.4.24. On 5.3.24 I had BHRT pellets inserted. My initial labs before pellet placement showed my testosterone at 26; vitamin d at 25; estradiol at 147.1.
Interestingly since pellet insertion my testosterone raised significantly May 31 was 286, July 12 was 185. However estradiol was only May 31 was 42.8 July 12 was 38.6. FORTUNATELY I haven’t noticed any adverse testosterone effects as of now. While waiting for the testosterone to come down my doctor started me on 0.05mg estradiol patch on 7.17.24.
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE how complicated this whole process is from being ignored at 30 years old when diagnosed with perimenopause through numerous cone biopsies, leeps, colposcopies, conizations from 30 to 54 years old. NOW while it does continue to be confusing at times; I believe that having my labs done monthly & working closely with my current doctor is allowing me climb out of the menopause induced hell I’ve been living in. 🤞

I'm pre-diabetic but getting my numbers down didn't happen until I understood more about type 2 diabetes and how foods affect me differently compared to another prediabetic. Even with the diabetes nurse with 20 minute visits bi-weekly. Thanks to Internet education and a lot of hours listening I'm almost out of prediabetic range (5.7 on A1c) over 3 months time. Information isn't delivered or isn't given the attention necessary to or just not given the time period. We get health class when we're ten but have nothing available as we age. Until the Internet exploded with providers who have the time and take the time to produce a video. Like the lovely Dr. Haver.

An IUD may be providing supplemental progesterone to your uterus but it is not systemic they way progesterone therapy is. Your doctor doesn't need a blood test to determine if you are in perimenopause, they should do that based on your symptoms. Here is an article to help you find a menopause educated doctor. There are also telemedicine options in case you live in an area that doesn't have a lot of choice in doctors.

Thank you so much. I'll check out the resource. Duluth, MN - not exactly rural, but not far off. The struggle is real.

Thank you for the information! I have been considering the hormone pellet injected underneath skin. I have been trying so many different natural things for my horrible menopause symptoms. Too many to list. Nothing is working so far and getting discouraged. I appreciate all of your wonderful knowledge❤
