  • Today we are reviewing Taste of the Wild: Ancient Grains, Ancient Streams dog food. This review was requested by a viewer. We look into what exactly is an ancient grain and does it provide any significant benefits. We also do our standard review of the food which includes reading the label and picking out any marketing traps. We review the AAFCO statement, ingredients, and guaranteed analysis.

    My second video and I’m so happy! At least some people are talking good sense! 34 years in veterinary nutrition and you are a breath of fresh air. Taste of the Wild is one of the brands I used to use( before I retired) in my seminars to vets showing the excesses of minerals. Spending extra money, being shamed into buying expensive food that is no more nutritional than Dig Chow! Keep up the good work!

      It’s hard to actually make a home cooked diet that is truly balanced. If you enjoy cooking for him I suggest consulting with a board certified vet nutritionist. A lot of them will consult remotely and you can find a list at acvn.org. Otherwise in the next few weeks I have a video tutorial prepared on how to do a home cooked diet at home a little better, but it still won’t be perfect.

I'm getting a working puppy, a Malinois, soon and have been recommended foods like Victor Professional (purple bag) or Nutrisource Choice Chicken Meal & Barley (green bag). Would you possibly be able to look into these kibbles and compare them as well?

    Recommend your favorite/top kibble? I use Orijen and my dog loves it, she’s picky and so I have to buy her expensive stuff like Orijen (carna4 too expensive). But I see you are against Grain Free so I’m looking for with it.
    Sadly Orijen only has grain free...any other brands that make thier kibble with such fresh ingredients and have grains? Or is it fine if I just feed her Treats with grains daily to make sure she gets her grains and can stay eating Orijen.

    Hello! I just came across your channel and love how in depth you go. I’m having a bit of a hard time finding a proper food for my 6 month old Australian Shepard. I’ve had him on IAM’s (for a month as a puppy) and Hills Science Diet Large breed puppy for at least 4 months now. The issue I’m having is he now is refusing to eat it. Also he has had 2 UTI’s in the last 6 months and I’m wondering if it could be from the calcium. Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Thank you :) can you recommend any food or supplements I can give him?

      I would say since he is having some specific medical issues, you should consult your veterinarian about appropriate diets. He may have special dietary considerations that need to be addressed and they may even recommend a prescription diet for him.

One had max calcium at 1.0 the other was like 2.5 and phosphorus was .8 and the other 1.6 which is quite a difference. Hi Doctor Rea, I saw some articles/videos talking about "meal" can have deceased animals from disease and it has become my biggest fear towards "meal". Is that true?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  8 месяцев назад

      From the AAFCO website re:your question. Under the precise definition above, the byproducts must be from “slaughtered mammals.”
      The USDA, which oversees the slaughtering of animals for human consumption, would not allow diseased or disabled animals into the plant for processing in the first place.
      However, under the broader definition for byproducts, which includes ingredients like meat and bone meal, yes, certain carcasses or parts may be rejected from use for humans and processed into animal feed.
      Meat and meat byproducts not directly suitable for animal food that are designated as 4-D (dead, dying, diseased or disabled). These are considered adulterated-unless processed in a manner that rids them of disease-causing microorganisms prior to becoming animal feed. This is most often done by rendering, which subjects the materials to heat and pressure to eliminate harmful bacteria. (Most commercial pet food is heat-treated during ingredient processing or manufacturing to kill any potential disease-causing organisms.)
      Raw materials that may have come from diseased or disabled animals are prohibited from use as raw animal feed or raw pet food. Cooking, high-temperature treatment or rendering can kill potential microbial agents and make such products safe for animal consumption. Read more about raw pet foods here.
      To avoid mad cow disease, certain “specified risk material” is prohibited from use in any animal feed, rendered or not. Read more detailed information about byproducts and what’s in them.

    QUESTION: I own a primarily American Staffordshire terrier mutt who is burning more calories than he's eating with our daily runs. He is currently on Wellness brand at the max kibble amount for his weight but it's not enough. I just started adding some beef and egg on top to help but would the high protein of Taste of Wild be good or any other ideas?
    He's around 55Ib with good muscle so I know he needs protein and some fat. Any tips would be great!

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  Год назад +3

      Good questions. You don’t want your calories to come from excess protein so I wouldn’t add on any beef or egg. This potentially will overload kidneys Wich we definitely don’t want with our athletes. I’m not sure what you mean that he’s at the max kibble amount. Will he physically not eat anymore? Sometimes feeding a puppy food can be a good way to get the right amount of fat and protein without just doing protein. I’d talk with your vet about maybe doing a puppy food and doing a good body condition score. Also good idea to do labs to make sure we aren’t missing something if we just can’t keep the weight on.

      @@AnimalDocRea Thanks for the reply! My male is almost 3 years old. He definitely would eat more. I heard from a vet tech that a complete kibble has the ideal amount of vitamins and minerals in it at the proper recommend amount per dogs weight. So my Wellness directions say feed 2 1/2-3 1/3 cups for 45-60# dog. So feeding twice a day I'm at 3 1/3 total cups or a bit more but his ribs are becoming a bit too pronounced. Not starving but they are starting to show.
      I was told feeding more than told to by weight of that kibble could provide too much nutrients. The friend recommended a high protein wet food added to help since it will support his muscles and have extra fat/calories. I was thinking why buy more when I can cook some ground beef and eggs for both of us and just give him it before I add the seasoning I like.
      I only added probably ~3/4 egg and maybe 1/3c ground beef (fat mostly drained)
      I'm thinking like me.....when I workout my protein levels get low unless I eat extra protein. If I don't my blood work reflects it AND my gym performance definitely reflects it. Since he is growing some beefy legs I want to make sure he is getting enough protein (and fat) to stay healthy. The kibble only is 21% protein. Besides the 2 jogs he gets I usually also give 15 min of tug of war/ fetch so he gets lots of cardio. (Keeps him well behaved and happy since he is HIGH energy lol)

    • @AnimalDocRea

      Ok so last bit of information is never follow package feeding instructions. Use the actual calculation for resting energy requirement and then use the multiplier for his activity level. If you need a reference I have several videos that go over how to calculate but I have a chart on the farmers dog video I think towards the end. It has the formula and the multipliers for the different lifestyles and life stages. It’s a blue and white chart.

      Hey TJ, I was a Hills veterinary rep for 34 years. Everything the good doc is saying is spot on. I know there’s debate among gym rats about protein so no wonder there’s debate with our active dogs. An athletic dig needs more fat, not much more protein. That’s what the research shows. Hills does not make a diet for active dogs. Well, we do much sell it only to the military and police. Don’t even ask me why???? Purina Pro Plan Sport is a very popular diet by people I know, who know their stuff. I would trust it. As Dr Rea said, disregard the feeding guidelines. You feed to maintain a healthy weight. The nutrients are designed to match the energy density. Doesn’t sound like your pup is going to have an obesity issue, at least not for a few years!

  • @andrewn6821
    @andrewn6821 3 года назад +1

    You talked about over nutrition in this video which can cause couch potato dogs (just an example) to be obese, how would we then calculate their calories/nutrition for their lifestyle? Just add a tiny bit more for a more active day? Is the guaranteed nutrition the most important part of dog food regardless of it's form?
    Outside of nutrition, a video on some insight of how your thought process is what you evaluate a dog that comes in would we interesting. With covid restrictions still in effect and not having a face to face/visual of what is happening, its hard to understand what vets are thinking outside of "how has his stool been" or "any limping you noticed".
    Edit: Do you have any recommendations on nutrition or canine conditioning books to understand their body/needs?
    Cheers.

      Great questions. I have sone helpful links in the description you may enjoy that have good veterinary backed information. As far as avoiding obesity, calculating correct calories and watching the AAFCO statement and avoiding all life stages as well as paying attention to the guaranteed analysis is key. Lastly, as far as how I conduct exams, I always do the exam the same way. I start at the head and move back checking each system. Doing if the same way ensures I don’t miss anything. Is far as not talking to your vet, I can’t speak to. My practice was able to use masking, plastic barriers and large exam rooms that allowed six foot spacing, for this reason we only had 1 month of curbside. Even then, doctor talked to all parents in the phone. If your vet is not including you, that’s a problem.

      @@melanierose9015 Yeah, even with my friends' experiences, the protocol (at least in in my city southern ontario) is the vet-tech comes out, ask us questions writes a bunch of things down then goes inside with my puppy, shots and examinations, they write it down on paper with comments + diagrams and vet tech comes back out an explains any concerns but I never truly understand what the doctor themselves are thinking. I'll ask "how was the puppy" and they always respond "healthy" (thank goodness) but since I wasn't there, don't know how he's actually like in there, does he listen to the vet's sit, paw, etc? is he too nippy? Does he do his Shiba scream? That sort of minor things that make you feel the team's passion or affection, although I'm sure they're great as he isn't scared to go back in.

      So its going to be hard to know for sure how different they are because there is no standard for either of those diets. No implications in food causing fatty tumors or increasing the number of fatty tumors. Fatty tumors (lipomas) are abnormal derangement in the adipose cells themselves. The body normally has adipose cells, it’s a problem with those. It has nothing to do with dietary fat consumption.
